Anyone try them?

I was wondering if I could mix the protein powder + commercial almond milk (they have some additives but my body is reacting less to small amounts of binders now) + chia seeds.

I found out my Tuesdays will be non-stop lectures from 9-5.
9:00-12:20
12:30-1:50
2:00-4:50

I will have to "drink" or munch during my lectures without having time to do anything in between. I figured if I mix chia seeds into the protein shake and have about 2 bars on me, it should sustain me until dinner.

Any suggestions on how to mix the protein powder? I know the site says the powder can be mixed with water or fruit juice. I figure that almond milk will be more filling.

I love the Unibars, but I can only handle about a fourth of one at a time because it is rather sweet to me. I have a handful of nuts along with my "serving!" Very satisfying. (drool)

I've used the protein powder with rice milk before.  I would try it at home ahead of time in case you find the need to add some flavour with it.  Chia seeds are great, but how long between when you mix it and when you drink it?  It may thicken if left too long.  I'd take it in a chilled thermos.  Experiment before hand.  I've also used the bars for lunches when we're out paddling on a lake.  I always have portions of compliant nuts or seeds with me too.

I am going to get those BPA free mixer/shake cups. They are about 20 ounces and I can shake the cup/container before drinking. I am hoping the chia seeds thicken the protein shake so it has some consistency and will fill my stomach. I am trying to keep my bag as light as possible since I have three classes back to back in three different buildings without time to visit my office.

I usually make my chia fresca the night before so it has time to thicken in water mixed with lemon juice and agave syrup.

Thank you for all the advice so far! I know I forget eat when things get hectic and then I start to crash and get sick. I also found that I lose my focus and ability concentrate when my stomach is empty so I try to keep food/snacks around me. However, being in back to back lectures all day long will make it difficult to munch/eat.

We've had a couple of the Unibars.  The consensus opinion in our house was that they are too sweet.  They would probably be great if you mixed some nuts in as you ate them.  It is a personal taste thing, though, so try them and see what you think.

I don't know if there is any way for you to make some wraps or trail mix to eat during the breaks.  I know professors would run down to the cafeteria during 20 minute breaks to grab a sandwich when I was in college...  If you already had it ready, you could eat on the go.

As far as weight, would it help to have a little luggage cart to wheel your book bag, etc.?

I am going to try and leave my lectures 5 minutes before the end time so I do not have to run to my next lecture (I will also notify the professors for the other two classes of my tight schedule so they are not offended by tardies if they should ever occur).

I used to have a rolly laptop bag but I am trying to go light and carry a small tote bag with a few books and tablet (getting a 10.1 inch tablet so I do not have to carry various spiral notebooks and printed copies of PDFed articles). Since I have an office in the same building for two of the lectures, I can drop my stuff off before my day starts and pick things up at the end of the day. I plan on taking the shuttle to school so I am trying to minimize the size of my bag (found the rolling laptop bag to be too cumbersome when traveling around). I am keeping my small laptop (size of netbook) at my office for heavier analytical work and the tablet for taking notes (on MS Word or One Note) and uploading the docs to Dropbox.

Great suggestion! I love stuff on wheels!! I actually think my handbag needs at least two on it!

Ha, ha! I suppose I would have it in there, but there is too much other stuff in there already!  One fellow told me I could use it as a lethal weapon after he picked it up. Leave it to a Chicagoan to come up with that!  ;D

How about using almond butter and water instead of commercial almond milk? Would that mix up OK in the shaker bottle? If so, you could add water from a sink or water fountain rather than carrying around the weight of the water (or commercial almond milk which has water in it) all day.

Yes, prior to making almond milk from whole raw soaked almonds, I used to make it in my shaker jar with almond butter. I didn't strain it, though.

Ooh - the almond butter idea sounds nice. I know we have some unpeeled raw almonds sitting around at home.

I will do this once I finish the 6 pack of almond milk we bought from Costco. My schedule has been so hectic I am not home enough for anything. :( I can't wait until my teaching contract ends and I do not have the 4 hour round trip commute time.

My parents have a soymilk maker. It also makes tofu and soy bean curds used in Korean cooking. I am thinking of soaking almonds and using the machine. Figured I can make batches on a weekly basis and store them in mason jars.

Just did some research on the machine and it uses dry beans and starts making milk in 30 minutes. Might give a try as soon as I finish the Blue Diamond Brand. Parents wanted to get rid of the machine but I told them I would use it. I might take it to the my apartment or keep it at their house and come over on weekends when I do laundry to make the milk.

I'd read on aonther forum that homemade almond milk can turn rancid after two days even when refrigerated.  Myself, I'd rely on bars, compliant fruit, nuts and water.

One note on machine:

It is important to heat the soybean milk for an extended period of time to destroy an enzyme.

That is not necessary or desirable with soy milk.

IMO, the Unibars are junk food and ought to be removed from DPN's website.  Seriously, 15-16g of sugar per bar?  Come on...  ::)

I think the new formulation of the UniBars are just right.  The chocolate bars before were bland.

It does heat the ground nuts to soften them and produce milk or porridge but it also has cold milk option without the heat.

If the shelf life is less than two days, I guess I am better off taking the machine to my new place.

By the way, soy porridge is similar to oatmeal. I might try "almond porridge" which is basically warmed up almond milk mixed with the meal. I am thinking the porridge might be a nice hot cereal alternative. Could be a nice warm breakfast...

My homemade almond milk starts to smell and taste slightly sour by the 3rd day so I make it in small batches and try to use it up in 2 days.  Sometimes it's going bad and you can't tell if you add a sweetener like dried dates.  WHen I made it without dates I could really find out about its short refrigerator life.  

Anyone ever add pbx to try and culture the almond milk?

That sounds like a GREAT idea!!! I might get a pack just to do that. I don't have a sweet tooth but this just sounds cool.
