My father had polio when he was 19 years old.  He was paralyzed, and he was expected to die of it.  About 23 years later, I was born.

I wonder whether there's a correlation between certain medical conditions and a "family history" of polio.

There are some anecdotal comments on the Internet from folks who have autoimmune disorders and who had a parent that survived polio.  And then I wonder, if a parent who had polio really does confer onto offspring a greater tendency to develop an autoimmune disorder, maybe that's one reason why we're seeing an increase in these disorders.

It's also interesting that all the medical history forms I filled out never asked if I had a parent who survived polio.  This tells me that the AMA doesn't think it's important.

This is very interesting indeed, but I have never seen anything about it at all. My husband's brother died with it.

My father survived Polio as well as a young child.  I would be curious to know of any such correlation.

My mother (type O) and I both had polio (different years).  I just figured it was an O predisposition to getting viruses.

You'd think the people who survived would be STRONG and their offspring strong as well.

It has left its effects on both my mother and me, so physically strong, not so much.
