hi, i'm completely new at this.  a practitioner that i'm working with suggested that i do the btd, so i'm starting to look into it.  i'm type A and i've been doing a high fat, moderate protein, low to moderate carb paleo-ish diet.  is it possible for a type A to continue eating this way with the btd?  i haven't been eating grains or legumes and i'm not sure i really want to - i get most of my carbs from tons of veggies, nuts, yogurt, some dried fruit. i will study the foods i should eat and ones i should avoid.  do i have to eat grains and legumes?  i don't eat much meat - occasionally poultry, but i eat a lot of fish. i would like to continue a high fat diet to balance my hormones.  
thanks for any hints, suggestions, corrections, comments.

Hi pucca, and welcome!  :)

I imagine you will get a number of responses to your post because the paleo diet is something that is discussed around here.  Several people who are type A's are drawn to it and incorporate it with their BTD.

One thing of note is that there isn't just one type A diet.  Depending on if you are a Secretor or Non-Secretor, the food lists are different.

And Dr. D'Adamo has another program, called the Genotype diet that is more fine-tuned than the BTD and there are three different Genotypes that you could be, each with a different food list.

So stick around and talk this out with us and we will try to help you find your best fit.

I'm type O and combine my paleo foods with Blood Type. I am more Paleo than BTD as far as the foods I do eat. In other words, I don't eat BTD allowed grains, legumes, sweeteners, sugars, juices or starchy carbs. I do higher fat, moderate protein and low carb. All my carbs come from non starchy veggies and occasional nuts/seeds.
I use the recommended proteins, fats and veggies from BT and avoid the avoids, which I pretty much found to be true before I even found BT. I am BT O though and a hunter. I also find I need higher fat and much lower carb than BTD recommended portions.But that's me
In short, I combine Paleo with BTD foods and it works beautifully

Welcome and you can do whatever you want to do with this lifestyle. If you want to combine the two, then go for it.. just integrate ben foods with the paleo lifestyle.

thank you all for your responses!!  they are helpful.  since i'm so new at this, i haven't had a chance to explore the nuances of the diet, like being a secretor or non secretor (i don't even know what that means, but i will find out!   :)) don't you have to take a test for that?  also, i checked out the genotype book from the library so i will read that too.  it seems sort of overwhelming and complicated right now, so hopefully it'll get easier.  one thing i'm so sad about, is that, on first glance, one of my avoid foods is coconut!   :(   i LOVE everything coconut, and that is a major source of good fat on the paleo diet.  bummer.
anyway, i'll try to find the type A paleo people.  should i just type in "paleo" in the search box?  thanks so much everyone!

You might want to try the Blood Type Diet first, before introducing the confusion of another diet plan with different food lists (GenoType).

As an O, I did fairly well on Paleo. But I did even better on BTD, even with re-introducing beans and grains! I find the food lists much more satisfying and less restrictive than Paleo eating.

I also miss coconut. That's really the only food I miss from my pre-BTD days. I don't miss the foods that made me noticeably sick (such as dairy) but coconut milk is really creamy and yummy. Oh, well, being healthy is more important.

I'm not sure how well Paleo will work for you in the long term, since you're an A. You'll almost certainly be healthier eating Paleo with the BTD food lists than without (cutting out beef, eating more fish and poultry, choosing BTD compliant veggies, nuts, and fruits.)

Good fat for Type A's is Omega 3's.

They don't need much fat, nor should have. Studies show that they have less IAP (intestinal alkaline phophatase) or it simply binds to their bodily fluids (Type A sugars in them). The complication is that IAP is used to digest fats, and also provides a sort of service to the intestines that keeps them healthy. If you tax the IAP with an over burden of fats - what little was variable to begin with - you neglect the intestines fair share of it.

Knowing your secreter status would tell us more about how tolerant of fat you would be, but in general there just isn't a big need for Type A's at any level. In fact it can make you fat...

Hi, Pucca. I am A positive secretor. I am allergic to grains, especially those containing gluten and gliadin, and a number of foods on my BTD, and I can't digest most beans and legumes. So I am on a modified paleo diet, avoiding the BTD avoids, and eating a lot of nuts, vegies, and some fruits and some protein.

hello pucca,

i do a paleo / genotype thing too. I'm an A(2) and no types of grains, legumes or dairy work for me. i choose all the compliant and beneficial vegetables, fish, nuts and seeds and work around that.

i was doing a veggie-type paleo before i found GTD and doing ok but this information gave me an extra level of refinement that i found helpful.

do what makes you feel good.

Hello Pucca - your body and intuition will guide you very well as to diet / food choices. you will have physical or emotional reactions when eating the wrong foods for your individual constitution and current state of health.  healthy and easy elimination also tells us whether we're eating right. Preparing two or three fresh raw vegetable juices daily will provide you heaps of vitamins, enzymes, minerals, amino acids, fats and are alkalising to your body's cells, rather than providing acidity which high amounts of animal and fish protein leave.  The veg and fruits, nuts/seeds, also won't leave uric acid which ends up in muscles and joints as the kidneys of many people only excrete part of the acids from animal flesh proteins.
Human/mother's milk is about 2% protein, so humans don't need large amounts of protein, which can weaken/stress the kidneys.  Your body can build the protein from scratch provided you include a good variety of fresh raw vetetable juices made at home, fruits, nuts/seeds, and some raw soaked whole grain like oat, wheat or rye.  The grain may not be necessary at all, and would be better to leave for a while if you have been eating lots of cooked/baked concentrated starches and grains/sweeteners as many people in modern diet have done, which clogs up the cells of the body.
Remember that cooking fish also changes the structure of fatty acids and proteins, and the cholesterol in tinned/canned fish is oxidised which can contribute to heart disease, so if you eat fish, eat it fresh, clean and raw and not too much as it is still acidic in the body!  just step up your vegetables incl the higher protein ones like pumpkin, broccoli, green leafy, cauliflower, green beans. Amino acids are also in all fruits, and herbs like parsley, basil.  There is protein in nuts, seeds as you would know.  I am a type O, and I do better with some raw goat milk at present, veg juices every day, salad with a little sea vegetable/avocado, olives, fresh fruit, some dairy cream.  some days, I soak a small amount of whole grain overnight in a thermus flask in warm water, and chew it slowly, but I sure no longer eat baked/cooked starches, or flours of any kind due to chronic health problems and a colon which has not worked well for many years.

Hormones will be balanced through fresh vegetables and their juices through a juicing machine - esp carrot, spinach, celery,and other greens, fruits, eating and sleeping at regular times, early to bed and early to rise, some suitable exercise, time in the sunshine.  There is enough fat in whole foods incl nuts/seeds, avocado, olives, a little fresh coconut for some people, raw goat milk, or fresh raw dairy cream.  Would not recommend any soy milk at all.  too much fat, esp if it is cooked/heated will strain the liver, gall bladder and pancreas.  your body will gell  you if you're on track!

I happened to catch part of Dr. Oz today and he had the paleo diet guy on.  The plated food showed over half of the plate with vegetables, protein about the size of your palm, a small portion of fruit, and some fat from a vegetable source.  It looked a lot like what many 0's on the forum list as their regular diet since many avoid grains.  They mentioned that paleo avoids imflamatory foods such as grains, beans/legumes, and dairy.  It sounded like it would work for O's but not so sure about A's, B's, and AB's.

some people may be able to eat fruit with the other food groups, I think it best to use wise food combining principles and keep fruit as a seperate meal, fruit can just sit in stomach and ferment, and not be digested well is one eats it with a pure animal-type protein source like poultry, fish, etc.
I think it a shame to avoid grains altogether, once a person gets healthier internally, they can eat soaked or sprouted grains, either raw or in a loaf of bread baked at low temperature to retain the enzymes of the grain.  Organicly grown whole grains are so high in good nutrition and good for intestinal health. Sprouted / essene bread also is more sugar (easy to digest) rather than the more common cooked starch products (bread, cake, crackers, breakfast cereal, meusli bar) which the body can't use for good health or to regenerate the cells as are not living fresh foods.  I may add an apple to my fresh vegetable juices made at home, but my main fruit meal is now around 5pm as last meal of the day, either with some goats milk, fresh cream or some grain like sprouted bread or oats.  I no longer eat rice, due to negative after effects as it is a cooked starch food and I feel very tired and unwell after eating rice.  Live foods make us feel and look alive!!..... Go the vegetables, fruit, nut, and seeds!!..

Would add the membrosia cocktail to my day--

1TBSP of flaxseed oil
1 TBS of lecithin
6-8 oz of juice
mix into juice of your choice I use grapefruit

shake well in a glass jar till it emulsifies.
Great way to get healthy omegas into your diet.
