One of the many many things I miss from my previous diet is chili powder. Does anyone have suggestions for substitutions?

Here is a list of spices Adam discussed in the Fresh Start April thread...  You might study some of these to see if you can find a replacement.

Also, made an order from Myspicesage today.  Never ordered from there before.  Someone here, I forget who, mentioned this place, so I'm trying them.  New spices I've never had before in that order are:  horseradish powder, Mexican oregano, black cumin, and hot Hungarian paprika.  I've always bought the horseradish with the vinegar in it, and I'm going to try the powder now so I can get 100% compliant, which isn't an easy task.  Never had the Mexican oregano, only Mediterranean, so I can't wait to see what it is like.  Have only had brown cumin seeds, so this is new.  And I have a hot paprika from India, but never had the Hungarian type.  These hot paprikas are a God-send, as I have always loved spicy foods.

Thank you ABJoe for quoting that.  I had to learn this on my own, and only recently noticed this mentioned in the TypeBase when I was perusing Paprika recently:

All supermarkets carry mild paprikas, while ethnic markets must be searched out for the more pungent varieties.

And, lo and behold, my international foods market had paprika from India, and BAM! just like Emeril, I was kicking it up a notch, and keeping it compliant.  :D

This is helpful in that I did not realize that paprika was the main ingredient in chili powder - Paprika is an avoid for Warriors.

I'll have to figure out some other flavoring I like for my southwestern meals!

Jerri Lyn, if it's just the paprika that you want to avoid, I would substitute powdered chile peppers.  I like Ancho or Chipolte, and I'm guessing half the amount would work because they are very bold flavors.  Hopefully the chile peppers themselves are not a problem for you.

I've used plain ole cumin powder in place of chili powder. If you try that, start with 1/3 the amount of cumin in place of the chili powder; and add more if needed.
