Hi

Just wondering if anyone has info on how to stop receeding gums? I am doing better with oral care, however, I am concerned about it for my future.

Eating right and reasonable cleaning - without fluoride seems to be making my gums build in again, which means that the "recession" that had occurred is reversing.  It may be a long process depending on how much healing your body needs, how compliant you are, and whether you eat enough to power the body properly.

Ok, so no flouride, but why does my dentist keep telling me I need flouride to prevent cavitiies?

What toothpaste do you use and mouthwash?

Sorry, 1000 questions.

and... vit c is important for collagen, but I am low carb in general so any thoughts on where to get more vit c or should I just take a supplement:(

Do a search for fluoride toxicity to see why to not use it.  The ADA has bought that fluoride is good to poison bacteria to limit the plaque buildup, but aren't addressing the toxic effects of it anymore than they are the mercury in amalgam fillings...

I use either salt / baking soda mixture or a plain brush, the floss.  I typically rinse with a dilute salt water or plain water.

Check online for Vit. C content in foods and choose beneficial foods with a high content.  You'll not only get your C, but lots of other great food value.  I find I need very little supplementation now except for some Polyflora and some specific detox help.

Flouride makes for strong teeth, but it's hard on gums. I have two children who were getting a lot of cavities, even with regular tooth brushing, so I buy fluoride toothpaste for them. That's the only fluoride they get- none in drinking water or vitamins; as it can be toxic when ingested and only helps teeth when used topically.

Meanwhile, I  buy fluoride-free toothpaste for my middle child because she has healthy teeth AND reacts strongly to environmental chemicals. I suspect she reacts to fluoride as well, so she doesn't use the fluoride toothpaste. I don't use it either- I use a homemade mixture of baking soda and salt.

Take a folic acid tab and dissolve it in water and swish it around in your mouth.

My gums used to bleed a lot with brushing and flossing every time.  If i had drank alcohol, they would bleed even more.  

Now they rarely bleed and i think it is because i take magnesium and other vitamins every day, whereas before i didn't.  My brushing has not changed at all from the time my gums bled till now.  

So i think vitamin deficiency plays a big role in gum health.  I was deficient in vitamins.

I have to say I've been having similar thoughts as you, as my gums bleed off and on when brushing.
And I don't think it is to do with how I take care of them as much as I'm becoming convinced it is to do with my need for more vitamin C, and possibly other supplements.

The probiotic l reuteri which is in the NAP Polyflora A can help with mouth bacteria. In this case, it might
be specific for blood type A more than other blood types

The protocols for O's  are: Antibacterial Protocol, Yeast/Fungus Resistance Protocol.
I had a problem with my gums at certain teeth a long time ago, one of them fairly bad, and I followed the protocols for my type, and now my gums are perfectly normal. My dentist is happy and so am I! It was amazing how quickly they recovered! Dr. D. knows.......

The issue of flouride is covered well in Paul Bragg's books and other books by other authors that I am currently reading, I think Bragg also wrote one on water.  We need organic flourine (not inorganic flouride (a surplus product of industry).   Flourine is in unsalated almonds, carrot, beet tops, dandelion, spinach, celery, raw goats milk, swiss cheese, egg yolk, cauliflower, cabbage, watercress, parsley, cucumber).  Eating raw means the organic atoms are used and recognised by the body, and will build strong health cells/ ie bones, teeth.  Cooked or processed foods don't work as well or at all.  When I am at the dentist, I say no to flouride and I buy toothpaste with no flouride - one I use is herbal ayurvedic toothpaste for teeth and gums. Salt may work well to clean teeth.  good to massage gums with fingers every day.  My teeth always had problems even though I ate lots of proteins, cheese, eggs, veg, fruit, nuts, etc    I did not include enough raw foods in the past, and this only weakens the colon which allows foods/body wastes to ferment or putrefy, thereby meaning the blood is not strong or healthy, teeth/gums need nutrients too.
Our dental health is related to internal health which includes a clean, strong healthy colon and other digestive organs, and good nutrition from a wide variety of raw fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds (sprouted if possible), nutrients need to be assimilated into cells, so eat solids between 11am and 5pm if possible when digestion is optimum.  some raw juices outside those hours for extra amino and nutrients, ie minerals.  eat some sea vegetables too which strengthens all body cells/organs.
Dentists don't seem to be aware of dangers of flouride, or just don't want to admit it or tell patients, I don't understand it.

I brush my teeth with Kirk's fragrance free bar soap.  It's supposed to be super non toxic and it works well for me, although it did take me a while to get over the thought of brushing with bar soap.  I think the brush you use can have a lot to do with gum health, some of the soft ones are still pretty abrasive.

CO Q10 is also good for your gums (as well as your heart).
Brushing, good flossing and a rubber tip will help your gums and improve the pockets.  I have completely turned around the health of my gums.  No bleeding at all anymore.

Mouthwash:  The Natural Dentist Healthy Gums antigingivitis rinse.

Using this and quitting flouride have helped my gums immensely.  I had about six 4 mm (or is it nm?) pockets and they are now all at 2 or 3.  That is a huge difference, and I did nothing else to improve my flossing frequency, so I know it was just switching to natural products.

I think flouride and harsher mouthwash were irritating my gums.

It has aloe in it, so don't swallow it as an O, not that we would.

Some of my pockets that were 8s are now 1s or 2s.  Big improvement but I'm fanatical about the flossing, the soft pics and the rubber tip.  My dentist has been very impressed with the improvement.

I had a similiar problem with my gums. I switched to a cheap battery powered child's size toothbrush. It has two spinning heads - purple Hello Kitty from Wal-mart - under 5 five bucks - saved me hundreds at the dentist. Just don't push too hard. The smaller size makes it easier to reach the back teeth and apparently does a much better job of cleaning the teeth and gums. The vibration also massages the gum which helps the gums repair itself. It worked for me. I hope this helps you too. I had several pockets with a 6 rating that in a month went down to 4's. I go back in April - hoping all are under 3's - which is where my hygenist wants the pocket numbers.  :)

I am trying to take better care of my teeth and gums. I'm sure I have gingivitis and worry about getting peridontis. I have had good teeth most of my life  but I've noticed I have plaque (possibly calculus) built up on some of the inner parts of my bottom teeth and it looks like I might be getting deep pockets that are dark in color and tender. I also have a spot in the v of my canine that always looks bloody under the gum and maybe like it is trying to pull away from the tooth. I know I need to visit the dentist but I can't right now so I'm trying to treat it myself as best I can. I've stopped using toothpaste just recently and use peroxide most times, baking soda other times. I brush thoroughly with a soft brush and floss though I'm not sure I do it well. I have a flosser, tried using regular floss but my teeth are tightly spaced and it shreds. I'm thinking of switching to the interdental cleaners or picks. I also just purchased a gum stimulator to use after reading this article

Hi, Rachel D

How often do you get your teeth cleaned by a dental hygeniest (sp) ?  The fact that your teeth are tightly space, I'd say, is a good thing because food cannot become trapped in the gums.

I've dealt with gum disease for many years and when I was in my twenties a dentist did recommend brushing with baking soda and hydrogen perioxide together.  Sort of make a paste.

That did work and I still use that today.  Along with that I use the dental picks after most meals.
If I'm out, I make sure to make a stop in the ladies room to use the picks or I use them while driving sometimes.  I hate having food stuck between my teeth.  

Regular dental cleaning is the best preventative but I also use essentail oils (www.anandaapothecary.com)  They recommend myrrh oil, clove bud, and wild frankincense on your gums and in your mouth.  The last time I had my teeth cleaned (I tend to go over the three month recommended period) the hyigenist was amazed that my gums didn't bleed at all.  I consistently used the myrrh oil in the morning after brushing and in the evening after brushing.

It's good to know you are cognizant of taking care of your teeth and gums at your age.  It will benefit you in the future.

To be honest I think its been 5 or 6 years since I've been to the dentist. Always had no problems whatsoever so after I moved and insurance changed I put off finding a new dentist. I'll use the baking soda and peroxide tonight and see how it goes. I forgot to say I do use essential oils, I mix with water for a mouthwash. Joy, how do use your oils? Do you dilute them or use them straight? There are always warnings so I try to be cautious with them.

Alot of insurance policies include at least one cleaning a year.  You might have to pay upfront but the insurance company will reimburse you.

I would shop around for a dentist who doesn't charge skyhigh prices.  Most people who clean teeth as professionals know what they are doing.  I've heard of people who go to dental schools and pay alot less to have students do the cleaning.  You need a bit of luck there I'd say.  I've never done that myself but other people say it's ok and they save alot of money.

The essential oils I use "wild myrrh from Ananda" I take a Q tip and dip it into the oil and swab it onto my gums.  Inside and out.  It doesn't taste bad.  There are essential oils that can be ingested but you have to know which ones to use.  Ananda Apothecary is very good about explaining all facets of the essential oil.  They normally do not recommend ingesting any of the oils but that is not the case if you do some research.  

I use the clove bud oil as a mouthwash/rinse.  Use a small paper cup and put some warm water in it and add a few drops of clove bud oil.  Read up on it in the website.

Also, I just remembered I started taking CO Q10 tabs which are very good for the gums.  I take 200mg per day.  Also, search folic acid which helps the gums stay strong.  

All of these take time to research and find out what works best for you.

I'm glad to hear that you know about Ananda Apothecary.  They have answwered all my questions and they always seem to err on the side of being conservative.  I have a strong belief in essential oils even though they are not a quick fix or a replacement for medical care.  

I feel that the body absorbs them and uses them to our benefit.  Of course, you have to know what you are doing and don't start pouring the oils all over or ingesting them "willynilly".

I am still quite the novice in the essential oil area but I feel confident knowing that any oils I purchase from Ananda are going to be quality products.

As long as you're alive, healing is possible. The healing of gums may not be COMMON, and it may not happen while eating the SAD and using toxic oral care substances, so I can see whey dentists may not have ever seen it happen.

Blues, but have they had experience with patients on the Swami or Blood Type Diet?
Perhaps normally something that doesn't happen may happen eating the right food?

My gums hadn't receded.  I just had large pockets and bleeding - neither of which I have now.  I'm really dedicated though.  I really spend a lot of time on them every night.

The bad spots that I have are starting to look better and my gums are not bleeding as much. Still need to get in the oil pulling habit but I'm really pleased with how its going.

What is a "reversal of receding gums" but healing?

What the dentists mean is "in my experience, gums don't grow back." That doesn't mean that gums CAN'T grow back, just that the dentists have never personally seen it happen or read about it happening, and they have no  clue what to do to help you support that. It also means that it's far, far, easier to prevent damage than it is to fix it after it's happened.

healthy teeth is more about diet than much else. cut out wheat, keep an eye on phytic acid, eat/drink bone broth and or make your own stocks. varied diet

when you do clean your teeth, use a very soft brush and don't rub hard.

I use a mixture of one part 3% hydrogen peroxide and 2 parts (wheat and aluminium free) bicarbonate of soda. let it sit for a day. keep in a glass container and don't use a metal top.

for the mouth wast I use a teaspoon of pink sea salt and 250 ml of filtered water each week.

I then spray my mouth with a 3% hyrdogen peroxide solution 5 sprays.

I also try to oil pull before this for ten mins.

so the routine is oil pull - 10 mins spit

rinse mouth with salt water.

brush teeth and gums with the tooth paste mix.

rinse with the salt water.

spray 5 sprays keep in mouth for 3 -5 mins then spit

seems to work well for me and the rest of the family.


I also try and rinse my mouth out several times during the day

Rachel,
If you use a tongue scraper because you have a coated tongue, your liver probably needs detoxing.  And you may have some internal yeast that needs rebalancing, perhaps some probiotics in addition to all the good teeth cleaning advice from policy checker.

Do you floss?  I have found it to be important for my gum health, but others are different...

Just remember that they don't know what they don't know...  The body can heal much deeper than many people realize...  Just because Dr.'s have never known to tell their patients how to heal, and even if they did - many patients aren't interested in doing what the Dr. says when it involves controlling their diets, etc, they have probably never seen gums heal.  

I have a practitioner that says that only about 10-20% of patients are willing to follow through with dietary changes...  She was very surprised when she knew what I was doing and how much healing I was doing.

ABJoe,

What you stated about some doctors that they may only know what they learned and what they read in literature is true.  I feel there are many times when patients return to the doctor after a certain diagnosis and find the patient either vastly or completely healed.  I've heard this a number of times.
I've read in several different books that a patient who is actively involved in his/her getting well is almost assuredly guaranteed to get better.

Be vigilant with the basics of self care and the mind and body will take care of you.

Of course, doctors are necessary; we all know that.  And thank God for those doctors who go beyond what they learned in medical school.

A while back I bought some myrhh, some slippery elm, and some golden seal in powder form, and I completely forgot I had them...I used to brush my teeth with the combined powders (with one drop of tea tree oil) and thanks to this thread, started another batch and used it tonight. My teeth feel so clean! And I know my gums appreciate it! ;D

In addition to the picks I also use paro tiny interdental brushes ("isola F"). They are excellent to remove leftovers from between the teeth that the picks don't do. They are delicate and don't massage the gums so well as the picks.

There's a problem with myrrh essential oil because it is actually resin. It loses its fluidity very quickly and becomes a sticky matter. I realized it this morning when I removed the plastic cap off the myrrh eo bottle. So I picked a little bit of the resin on a cotton swab and did the gum massage. This is very uncomfortable. :P  Maybe somebody knows if it's possible to dilute it?  :-/

Have just tried it successfully. I have 2 bottles, one of which wouldn't open. I warmed the cap under running hot water, it helped, and the cap opened easily.

The things you all are talking about in this thread is completely new to me.  Oil pulling?  What is that?  What is it pulling?  Everyone here seems to be using various unconventional methods and ingredients.  Everyone in my family has lost their teeth by age 60 and wear dentures.  This last year I've had 3 crowns and 5 fillings, and I'm facing age 50 next year.  I'm pretty disheartened about my teeth.  As a male A+ secretor Teacher, what would be the recommended protocol?  Is there a comprehensive website that explains in detail all the things mentioned in this thread?  Or do I need to just research each item mentioned here?

Essential oils can also be diluted in "carrier oils"  such as olive oil or grapeseed oil.

Adam- do a search on this website for "oil pulling" and make sure you don't limit your search to the last month.  This has  been discussed in detail numerous times. In a nutshell, oil pulling involves swishing oil around in your mouth (without swallowing) for 5-15 minutes, as the oil "pulls" toxins out of your mouth. You then spit out the oil. There are various discussions about what oil to use, how much oil, how long to swish, how to clean the mouth afterwards, etc.

Myrrh goes wel and can be mixed with frankincense oil, peppermint oil, tea tree oil.  These are all acceptable to be used in the mouth along with myrrh.  I also noted that the myrrh gets a little thick after a while.  I usually dip my Qtip in water before putting the myrrh on the end.

Carrier oils can also extend the life of an oil.  Please check at http://www.AnandaApothecary.com as they have a chart on what percentage to use when mixing.  You can use pipettes or droppers.
