I'd like to send my 21 year old, college student son back to school with Elderberry extract to help ward off flu etc. I think he is in the age group that can be affected by cytokines attacking....

Should he not use the Elderberry? or....when shouldn't he?

Thanks for any input!  :)

I know it's fine for all for prevention, but whether he should stop taking it or take more if he starts getting sick is the real question.

Also, what's his blood type?

Oops, he's an O. He eats pretty well for a college student, lots of eggs (they're cheap). I know though that he doesn't get enough sleep, so I worry.... He's 5.5 hours way, so if he gets the flu, all I can do is sympathize with him....

The when to take, or whether to stop taking Elderberry if sick is what confused me too.

I'm wondering for myself as well. I've had this lingering cough for the past month, and have been taking elderberry. I'm wondering if maybe it's doing more harm than good with this drippy, choking kind of cough.

I found this quote by Dr. D:

"Elderberry should be used only by people under 15 or over 35 during active infection..  It can be used by everyone as a preventive.  It has to do with it having the potential to ramp up cytokines, which increase the inflammatory reaction. This is more of a problem with people in the age group of 15 to 35  (older and younger  people have a more moderated immune response)"

Give him a bottle or two of Proberry Caps. They are a lot easier for him to take then a liquid, and he can just pop a couple a day like a vitamin for prevention.

Thank you Victoria! Yer good! I knew I had read something about young adults and Elderberry, and you found it!

You're right Mayflowers, the capsules would be easier, I should get those for my hubby, he doesn't like the taste of the syrup.  ::)

Thanks for clearing the Elderberry question up. It's safe as prevention, but stop if he gets sick!
