Can anyone identify this please?

It looks like kale leaves but inside it does form a head, so I'm wondering if it's more cabbage (avoid) or kale (superbeneficial)

Try to find out the scientific name of that variety of greens, and compare the name to the scientific names of the kale and cabbage that Dr D has evaluated.

That's not Kale, that's Savoy cabbage.

I LOVE savoy cabbage, but it is a big old no-no, I guess. It is so much easier than kale to find nice and fresh. I wonder if plain old cabbage and savoy are the same according to the edicts of our diet?! It certainly is prettier than "common cabbage!" I wonder....... :-/

Well, I've been looking at a lot of different cabbages, and I cannot see a bit of reason why Savoy cabbage would not be all right for me. Dr. D. needs to get into that lab ASAP and find out how this cabbage rates because we need help in finding things to eat that are relatively fresh and easy to find!!! Savoy cabbage is VERY common!!! And it keeps well in the fridge. All these other greens I'm allowed are iffy about being fresh, and I'm lucky for them to last three days in my fridge after I get them home. I bought some supposedly fresh organic greens Saturday with an expiration date of February 19th and this stuff would be ready for the compost by that time! Easily!!

All kales and cabbages should be the same species: Brassica oleracea

This species also includes:  broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, and others.

This time of year, most of my greens come in the form of frozen spinach and dried parsley. I eat more fresh greens when they're in season locally.

Ruthie, just about any kind of hardy green is in season here in winter. In fact, that is the BEST season! And when I was younger I grew them - lots of them!

Yes, Brassica oleracea is the species, but there are sub groups. I can eat a plateful of raw or cooked broccoli or kale or mustard or beet greens or dandelion greens or spinach or turnip greens or collards and enjoy them to the fullest with no problems whatsoever, and most of them are diamonds for me. "Common" cabbage, as it is listed in SWAMI, won't bother me unless I eat it two or three meals over a few days - it is an avoid. I haven't tried that, though, since I started SWAMI, except when it was allowed under one diet it provided. Maybe that was before I let SWAMI choose Explorer for me. Since Dr. D. hasn't said anything about Savoy cabbage, I might get a small head and see what happens.........
