Anyone have information on how going low carb can  mess up your thyroid? I want to make sure I am not doing any long term damage.

I don't have any info in that regard, but I did find info early last year that stated that cooked millet acts as a goitergen, the same as eating raw cruciferous veggies. I found that information timely as I had begun to make lots of gluten-free flatbreads etc...with millet flour and my energy was low and the thyroid kept cramping. Needless to say, I have not touched any millet since!  :)

swami gives me what I need

I prefer putting myself in Dr D s hands then beating around the bush constantly.....

Good question, Marjorie. I am interested in what feedback you get on this.

On the matter of Swami, I altered the input data to indicate thyroid problems, and it changed bladderwrack to an avoid. Since I am somewhat hypothyroid, I am surprised about that value given that bladderwrack is such a valuable source of iodine for making thyroid hormones. Swami does not differentiate between hypothyroid and hyperthyroid - just requiring an indication if there is a history of thyroid problems. Wouldn't each have its own separate impact on certain food values?

Currently, I am ignoring the recommendation from swami to avoid bladderwrack. Dr D's encyclopedia directs bladderwrack as part of both the metabolic enhancement protocol and the detox protocol for hypothyroidism. Any thoughts?

I need to contact the administrator and get my swami report... I cant find my information since I moved. True, it can get old, the constant beating around the bush. :)

Thanks... I am very interested. However, I know one thing, for the last 3 days, I have been eating GF beef and very low carb. My  foot feel amazing ( inflammation gone down), not really hungry and my clothes feel better. However, I am so tight on money, I think I am fasting without trying:)

I will get some bladderwrack! I forgot about it. Good call.

I was eating millet for a while and having slow thyroid ....seemed to improve once I got off it.

While I value my SWAMI, I believe that we must be self-aware and respond to what our bodies are telling us about certain foods. Friends that we have genotyped who are celiac are  surprised at the amount of gluten products that SWAMI gives them; of course they use their common sense and know not to eat them. My nephew is highly allergic to shellfish and SWAMI gives him shellfish!  Dr. D'Adamo uses the professional version for SWAMl and can 'tick off' more parameters. I believe that the 2nd version of SWAMI will have the option to put in if one is celiac. Everyone is a unique individual and responds differently to foods. I've called DPN about a certain product that is recommended for O's and they confirmed what I thought, don't use it if you have a certain condition. SWAMI is very good, but it is not like seeing Dr. D himself, we have so many variables.  :)

As  an O I would not recommend going low carb.. it is neither healthy nor do-able long term.

If money is on object to deal with then spending it on the good foods, meat and vegetables is cheapest.  

If you are dramatically low on cash then please please go to a food pantry and let them know exactly what you can eat, and see if they can not come up with a food package that will fill the kitchen without hurting your food issues.  People donate money and time so that people would stay healthy or at least healthier, Volunteers really cherish it when they can serve someone with needs, and later you can always return the favors when things are better again.  I encourage all who have a hard time, especially people with children or old folks..

With meat bones you can stretch a budget big time.  Soup is obvious, but the bone gel from slow cooking the bones after the soup is done, is a good way to fill in on a sauce and or thicken the next soup pot, when there is no meat in it.  

Using all the fat from lets say hamburgers over some onions is a good way to extend food that otherwise needs fat added.  Adding vegetables to beef stock, and cooking them until tender is one thing, another is adding some and cook them slowly for hours to get all the nutrients out is also a way to extend your mineral intake. Just as important as eating a vegetable that otherwise does not taste so good.  add some carrots at the end and all is good.. discard the vegetables that have given their all.

Carbs are not for my plate, they just are things to put other things on them.. I rather eat the allowed cheeses, or parmesan for flavoring... or the eggs in so many ways.  I see some eating as better even if one sided, like eggs less damaging then is any grain as it always requires some other food to give it flavor-- why not have the 'other' on a spoon instead? If carbs are needed, walnuts serve a good purpose.... also makes me feel less deprived..  

as for the difference with Bladderwrack, the geno type might be a indicator of which issues you might suffer with.  If you can eat the fish - I do not - you might be able to save the cash on subs..Iodine patches might work as well and is low cost... but I don't know.. its all in the testing..I am just a saying..

Swami is the newest, and most forgiving of food categories... the other lists are getting old, as is the encyclopedia by now..

There is always the cyclical ketogenic diet too....something that I am dabbling with right now...seems to have the best of both worlds

LOOPS please give us the link for it..? so we know what you are talking about..

For me O no doubt I do better with tuna fish for lunch, and salad and meat for dinner.. I am trying to reduce the eggs.. tough.. I am so used to 2 every day..

Where I eat my carbs is with green salads and the 1 fruit a day I should have but I love fruit so often I cheat with more then one..for thirst..

I do not on the whole (when I am good) eat any starches at all.
