I'm not sold on fish oil.  When I went to the doctor last and had my cholesterol checked, my LDL was sky high and my HDL dropped! Plus, my blood pressure was going up.. 128/80. I'm usually text book 110/70..  :o Freaked me out. I knew something was wrong. I stopped taking the fish oil. I read on line that fish oil raises LDL. That explains that, but the blood pressure going up too? I was at the doctors' the other day and it's back down to 110/70.  I think I'll use flax for omega 3's.  I took expensive fish oil too. I took Iceland Health brand.  No more fish oil for me!  >:(  :)

Wow! I had the same thing happen. Both the doctor and I were scratching our heads on this one. Interesting that this time I did not order my fish oil supplement as I found some krill that I had in the freezer. That never affected my blood cholesterol so I'm back to that. My body feels so good when I take 1 Tbs. of flax oil daily and I should truly be vigilant with that. Thanks for sharing this information.  :)

I've never tried krill oil yet. It was alway too expensive when I wanted to get it.  I don't know if I should even bother. I can't tolerate flax oil. It's so strong I get sick, literally from it. I can tolerate ground flax seed. That's about it.  :) I am an Ao BTW.

No Isa, I was taking fish oil 2-3 years and every time I went to the doctor my BP was elevated since starting it.  I was always 90/60 or 110/70 before taking fish oil.  I stopped the oil and my BP is back down again. I don't think they were faking my readings.  :) Yeah, sometimes I'm a real A. ;)

Krill is a type of shrimp, though, which is an avoid in the BTD book for As.  You might try cod-liver oil if you don't want to rely on flax.  It's what I plan to give to DH.

Isa, is flax oil beneficial for all type A's, even men?  Even though it might cause prostate cancer?

Hi. It says they use a mixture of herring, mackerel, sardines and anchovies. Really? krill is shrimp? Wow, thanks for the heads up because I'm allergic to shrimp. I always had a bad feeling about trying krill oil. That's why I didn't.  I had tried some other fish oil too. I was taking salmon oil for awhile. My B/P was still elevated. I thought it was age or weight related until it went back down after stopping it.  I really need my D levels checked.  I do take fish oil vitamin D from Blue Bonnet. I can't tolerate the lanolin D that is in almost all the D3 out there. I break out in a rash.

It's always worth trying other supplies if one fish oil doesn't suit. I'm okay as I love fish, and eat sardines. Plus try to find wild caught salmon.  I heard, and others can correct me, that cholesterol levels can be unhealthy if liver or bowel function is not good; so worth us paying attention to this. And others have written about the role sugars/grains have as these cause inflammation in some people and the fats in the body are sent to areas to help calm/sooth the inflammation. Some say that the long chain fatty acids can't be made easily from the shorter acids in flax. Plus for me, I can't have flax as the high omega 6 fatty acids are high; I have a little hemp oil which helps. I don't take as many flax seeds for same reason and on the SCd diet, the flax is not allowed as encourages unhealthy gut flora that feed on the muculoid flax. I personally like the oils in whole form most of the time ie fish, some walnuts, chia seeds, acai berry (a super food for hunter as acai has omega 3 and high antioxidant food. If you buy fish oil, check that it has been checked for toxins, mercury, pcb's and is from sustainable seaffood source.

sweet A-lein M-flowerli ;D... nope missunderstanding here... 120/80 is a total normal BP... the rest was too low...here I agree ;) :D..... but what they try to make us believe (for better options in sales for PB-medication) that 120/80 was a +- merely negative value which isn't at all....and yup wouldn't go for fishoil when omega 3 is needed.... better to go for linseed oil ;) (smarty) btw... perhaps was there also a little *white-coat-syndrome* playing in that situation and yuk is all........(goofy)(smile)(shrug)

I've been taking both krill oil and glucosamine w/MSM for a long time, and just recently quit in order to clear the last vestiges of avoids out of my diet. I eat plenty of sardines and wild salmon. Fingers crossed that my cholesterol numbers will improve having removed these supps. Ironic.

Just wanted to share that my type A husband is taking flax oil as per Dr. D himself...so that
might help answer your question as to whether it's good for men who are BT A.  Each food
and supplement once you do a SWAMI is specific for the conditions and issues you present,
so there cannot be one definitive answer for all blood type As whether male or female..  BTW, my DH is a Warrior nonnie...and he is 69 years old.

We're all unique biochemically. Many of us benefit from adding "good oils" to our diets. However, Mayflowers seems to thrive best on a low-oil diet, and probably gets all the fat she needs from whole foods.

You may just be right. I do better when I limit my oils.

I'm thinking Ruthie is correct....it's likely the total amount of oils.

Is the Vitamin D which is from fish oil affecting your B/P?  

One thing we all know for sure...one size does not fit all. :)

Thank you for this!!!!! DH won't do a SWAMI, but he's an A- and I'm pretty sure he's a secretor.  I can't remember his GT and I loaned the book with all my notes to my BFF.  It was a vegetarian genotype which is what turned him against the diet immediately and it was the secretor status that made the difference.  He won't do the test, though, so I'm guessing.

BHealthy, I'm not sure any of the type A genotypes are really supposed to be vegetarian, even though
some SWAMI diets might be more heavily plant based than others.  It's to all As benefit to eat a lot of plant foods because none of us really get a lot of heavy proteins.  If your DH is eating a high protein diet and not getting enough fruits, veggies, plant foods, he might eventually wind up with the "weak link" issues his genotype possesses.  Maybe see if you can get back your GT book from your BFF and maybe try to get your DH to take another look. My husband was resistant UNTIL he wound up
with blood pressure and prostate issues....and went to the clinic in Bridgeport to see Dr. D and
the shift....He's not thrilled being a Warrior as his favorite food in the world is cheese..His family
had a lot of diabetics and his father died at 60 of a heart attack....so his diet is fairly
restrictive of his favorites (but his favorites weren't ideal foods for any As -- (hamburgers, french fries and pizza)  

What my husband now admits is that sooner or later if we don't  wind up turning to alternative healing protocols as doctors start pushing drugs and procedures for all health issues, we're so caught up in the health system that it's difficult to believe our bodies can be healed.  Drugs
don't heal the body.....food does!  :)

I actually ran out of the fish oil D and I have been taking my son's GNC 5,000 ius of D every day for the last few weeks. I think this D is not good because I'm not reacting to it. I wonder if the tablet even breaks down at all.  I need a level done .  I'm not sure if the fish oil D was rasing my B/P or not.  ??)

Wow..I had suspected rancid oil was in those capsules that sit on the shelves. I'm glad I stopped taking it. It's a healtheir diet and flax seeds, a little evoo and nuts for me from now on. Thanks for the link
Now I'm worrying about the fish oil D caps I take. :(

All quite interesting, of recent I went back and consulted my Swami. Salmon oil is a neutral & cod liver is a diamond. Our cat is now finishing my fish oil caps and I take a tablespooon of cod liver oil every morning & coconut oil (also a diamond) at noon and before bed.

Well I fell at work, and fractured my wrist,  Typing with one hand. I had an EKG done for surgical repair and it was completely normal! All the EKGs I had done before that were abnormal the last few years  . I was taking fish oil with all the abnormal ones over the years. I'll never  take fish oil again!  I even had a stress test because of FO thinking I had heart disease and I didn't!

I first noticed FO was causing problems when I noticed my LDL was really high! Never had that before. That's when I decided to stop taking it, Now with a normal EKG, that proves it was the fish oil.  
I think FO contributes to heart disease.

Wow Mayflower, sorry about your accident ... Hope you heal soon.

Scary reports about fish oil here ... it cannot apply to the explorer fish oil I am taking as part of the explorer 3 pack ... My BP has always been excellent ... also cholesterol ... I was not taking FO then ... will be interesting to see what I get next blookwork in a month or so ... :)

Thanks Cristina.  :)  It could just be me reacting to FO but I wanted to put it out there for people to pay attention to their risk factors like cholesterol and EKG'S, If they notice a sudden change for worse its most likley something they are taking causing it.  :-/ But it took me 5 years to figure it out! Who would suspect FO? Dr. D said let food be your medicine. (not supplements) FO also raised my BP. it dropped back down to normal when I stopped it!

Mayflowers, sorry about your wrist.

From my doctors orders, I was downing fish oil, and then krill oil, for a long time. I've been off them for about a year now, so I'm hoping to see an improvement in my cholesteral levels. My BP and heart rate has much improved since. I certainly feel better without them, and wonder whether the source was contaminated non-compliant fish.

Be aware that if you take anything that is aimed at cleaning the blood it would increase blood pressure. that's not necessarily such a bad thing.

if, for example, you take your blood pressure before taking cayenne capsules and then after you will get a shock, it throws it way high but I then settles down.

did you take the fish oil soon before going to get BP checked. try it after next time see what happens.


I only take Dr D Fish Oil and I find it helpful.

While trying to get off BP an CH meds, I'd been taking many FO caps over the course of the day trying to get to the OTC dosage equal to that of prescription strength (Dr.'s recommendation). I feel so much better these days due to high compliance and having jettisoned this sort of well-meaning but bad (conventional) advice from my Dr. that I'm tempted to carefully ramp down my pharmaceutical meds and eliminate them over the next few months. I know he'll fight me on this and frankly, I'm a little nervous about doing it without his blessing.

Thanks  :) I always wondered if I was getting rancid fish oil. I bought Iceland Health which was expensive, and supposed to be wild caught and pharm grade but companies lie  >:(

I've always monitored my BP because it ran low sometimes 90/60 but mostly textbook 110/70.
It only went up when I started FO... I thought it was weight related but it dropped to my norm after stopping FO, Being an A, I think I do better with vegetarian options like just adding flax and chia seeds  to my diet

Lecithin lowers blood pressure and cholesterol. I can't take a lot because my BP gets too low,

I got off the dreaded BP phama junk by taking Hawthorn. I take one in the AM and one at noon. I LOVE Hawthorn. And I hate BP medication! One of the "side effects" of Hawthorn is that it lowers blood pressure! How awful! (funny)

My doctor tried to scare me about getting off medication too, but I know too many people who have gotten help using Hawthorn, so I didn't believe a word he said. The BP problem was the only health problem I had so he was trying to hang onto it for dear life! Needless to say, I don't go to him anymore. My new doctor hoots at the idea that I need BP medication.
