Does anyone have any suggestions to help my Mum? She is 78 years old, 5'2" and around 120 pounds. She is badly intolerant to both dairy and wheat. She also avoids sugar because her teeth are not good. She is allergic to bananas and cream. She can eat goats' and sheep's yoghurt and butter, spelt, and buckwheat in moderation. She has been following the A diet for a good year now and is about 80% compliant.

She has had a bad year (health and stress) and has lost about 10 pounds. She always loses weight more easily than gaining it. She wants to put a few pounds back on, but the more food she eats, the looser and less reliable her gut gets. This causes her so much discomfort that she loses her appetite, creating a vicious circle.

I think that her trouble is that she is eating too well! The foods that she can eat are all high in fibre. I've suggested that she eats more eggs and changes her brown rice/flour to white/Basmati. Also avocados.

What else can I suggest?

Oh and I ordered a secretor test for her, and she should be sending it off this week.

The only way I could ever gain weight was to eat more calories not necessarily more food. For example,  she could fix a PB sandwich and spread some ghee on it.

Nuts are very caloric and eating lots of them helped me toput on weight. If she cannot gain weight despite this perhaps she should look at healing her gut.

begin by healling her gut......it needs a lot of fixing

bone broth is very nutritious, with added veggies and grains or legumes

She's an A, as per title - sorry, it's not very clear is it? Let me change that.

We've been working on healing her gut by staying as compliant as she can be. Beneficials for As tend to be high-fibre, which shoots everything through and irritates her insides more. Bone broth is a good idea, I'll suggest that.

She really doesn't like ghee, unfortunately. We haven't found a grain which she can make into bread which is not high fibre. She gets on well with spelt and rye, out of which she makes her own bread. She has only been able to get brown rice flour lately, and she can only take buckwheat in small amounts. She does eat nut butters and nuts, although she gets a bit fed up with them.

She has also been taking probiotics, and eating live yoghurt - for years.

Can you find white spelt flour and/or white rice flour? Can she eat white rice?

Has she been doing any weight-bearing exercises? That can help with bone density and muscle mass, both of which weigh something. She may not just need to gain fat. Of course, use common sense with any exercise program.
