BTD Forums  /  Eat Right 4 Your Type  /  can this help clear my weight/sinus issues?
Posted by: BirkieGirl, Tuesday, October 16, 2012, 3:29pm
i am O/ non secretor...i have tried the BTD a couple of times but have never had the chance to truly focus on it and do it wholly. i'm really interested in trying now.

my questions are only two: truly, will this help me to lose weight? i would like to lose about 25 lbs. i would still be a bit overweight, but comfortable. also, can i expect my sinus issue to clear up? i have had chronic sinus problems for 20 years, no medications work for me. my sinus cavities are full of 'junk' and do not drain. i have had a CT scan that shows they are full to the brim. i would like to avoid surgery on them as i'm a nurse and i KNOW what that surgery entails!  i have this horrific bad breath that worsens whenever i'm sick or eat foods that can somehow make it 'ferment' (for lack of better wording). i'm very new to this. i assume dairy worsens the mucus, and likely other things.

what can i expect for results???

Yes, you can definitely expect your sinus issues to improve, especially if you get a SWAMI to fine-tune your food choices to the highest degree possible. I personally recommend avoiding all dairy (except ghee) while the sinus problems are healing, even if SWAMI gives you a wide variety of cheeses to choose from.

You're likely to see a reduction in mucus production within a few days of making changes, but it may take weeks or months for the chronic sinus problems to really go away. Bear in mind that nobody can guarantee you'll have good enough results to avoid the surgery, and you may need to use other treatment modalities (such as chiropractic, herbal supplements, etc) to treat this- diet alone isn't always enough.

Weight loss is much more variable. Some people lose weight effortlessly when they make a few simple changes. Others have to work hard on exercise and portion control to lose weight, even when they're eating the right foods. Since you have other health problems, it's very likely that you will heal from all sorts of things before your weight starts to budge- this is a very common pattern. It seems as though our bodies can only do so much at once- when we're hard at work healing, there isn't any energy left for weight loss.

Our bodies tend to approach a healthy weight as we become healthier in general- losing weight if we're overweight or gaining if you're underweight. But these weight changes don't always happen as quickly as we'd like them to.

While waiting for a book or SWAMI to arrive, you can start by cutting out (or at least down on) wheat, dairy, corn, and potatoes. Fill up mostly on veggies and meats, and include some fruit and grains (such as brown rice or quinoa) once or twice a day. It's OK if you accidentally eat some "avoid" fruits and vegetables while you're easing into this way of eating; you'll still see some benefits from cutting out the "biggies" listed above. Nasal congestion is often the first thing that improves.

thanks ruth! that was super helpful. i'm picking up the Genotype book this week too, and going to make an appt with a professional nearby who is a nutritionist/natropath that was trained in Dr's method. hopefully that will help a lot. this is a BIG change for my family.

YES!!!! When you come from REGULAR food to BTD you will drop 25 pounds in no time.. but first you will need to be willing to change your way of life 'ideas' about foods..

the sinus.. yes, but slower..

I too have found that cutting out all dairy really helped clear up my sinuses.  Every fall-winter it would start with a sinus infection which drained to the lungs, creating an upper respiratory thing that had me coughing for months.  It would clear up by Spring in time for the allergies to kick in!  After cutting out dairy- no problems- and no allergies!  This was the first summer spent Claritin-free!  And I have lost 55 lbs in the past year and a half-  it really does work!

Talk to Peppermint Twist. She is an O nonnie that lost 96 pounds over about a year and a half. She had sinus problems but I can't say if they improved or not. The best thing is to send her a private message as her time on line her is limited lately. I do know that her keys were absolutely no wheat or corn, following the Genotype Gather diet strictly, and walking 1/2 hour to an hour everyday.

It's not BTD but using an Afrin type nasal spray just to open up your nasal cavities to get the "stuff" out is a choice I would make every time.  :)

Do you know what prolonged use of Afrin does to your nasal cavities?  Yikes! :o
Just giving up wheat has allowed me to go from using Afrin every night to never using it again.  I'm sold! 8)

Someonelse already said this but I'm saying it again  --- You have to be willing to give up the foods that are making you sick.   For me Wheat and most Dairy are the worse.  It's hard work changing but the results are wonderful.

Definately use the netipot or some other sinus rinse; I like the "NeilMed" sinus rinse bottle because you don't have to tilt your head back.

Also Oil Pulling.  You just put a spoonful of good oil into your mouth and swish it through your teeth for as long as you can then spit it into the trash. It  pulls some really nasty stuff  out of your sinuses.  Work up to 15 to 20 min eventually.

It will definitely help.  Dairy, wheat and sugar are big offender for O-nons.

Before BTD I took antibiotics 14 times in one year for mostly sinus infections and a couple UTIs.  I didn't have to take antibiotics for nine years in a row after starting BTD.  I've had to take them a few times since due to a mercury exposure and lower compliance, but I don't think I'll ever have to take them as often as before.  With longstanding sinus issues, it may take a few months of strict compliance esp dairy/sugar/wheat avoidance, to clear it all up.  Some supplements may be helpful as well... Deflect and collinsonia come to mind.

High compliance definitely equals weight loss.  It won't feel like dieting though, to eat all those beneficials recommended takes some doing.

I changed my diets due to candida, and eventually learned I was sensitive to gluten, dairy and yeast.
The hayfever, mucus issues went away.  Big relief I must say, it was getting worse as the years went by.

Recent news talked of people using rinsing their noses with tap water which had ameobas and bad results.  So anyone using a netti pot would be safer using distilled water, not the tap water.

Aha!  So it was my dear bud, gulfcoastguy, who suggested that this fabulous newbie send me a PM, eh?  That clears up that mystery!  Well, for some reason, every time I come to the board lately, my computer suddenly tells me the battery is about to go dead.  And it's hard to plug it in where I like to sit with it--okay, so I've never actually TRIED to do that, but I'm assuming it would be an ergonomic non-starter, so bottom line:  let me rush this post and also let me say I just perused this thread, I didn't read all the wonderfully substantive posts, on account of the rapidly-dying-battery thing, so if I repeat anything that's been said, pardon me.  Also, I won't repeat anything I already said in my PM response of the other night to BirkieGirl.

I'll just add that, in seeing your specific issues in your original post here, I am so with Ruthie:  YES, emphatically, YES, this diet will help with your sinus issues, as well as weight loss.  The BTD and GTD are very anti-inflammatory diets at their core.  By cutting out wheat alone, you will not believe how much your sinus woes clear up.  Wheat inflames and irritates every system in a Type O's body, not to put too fine a point on it!  It is seriously BAD for us.  Unfortunately, it is one of two foods (corn being the other) that is in practically every packaged food on grocery store shelves, so you do have to become very adept and consistent at reading labels, because you want to be sure to scrupulously avoid wheat.  Fortunately, there ARE alternatives out there so that you don't have to miss ANYTHING that you love.  For example, instead of pasta, I use brown basmati rice as my staple grain.  You can basically do ANYTHING with brown rice that you do with pasta and you won't miss pasta at all.  I use 100% rye (French Meadows brand) for bread.  I did have to totally change my lifestyle from being the Carry Out Queen to instead making everything homemade, but it really isn't hard!  I never learned to cook, formally (or informally), yet I just figured it out--it's simple, when you start with good, quality, whole food ingredients!  Plus things are so convenient nowadays, like you can buy bags or containers of organic salad greens, already cut and washed for ya:  how easy it that?  Then you just throw in some cooked meat with that, like chicken, ground turkey, lamb, beef, whatever, and a quick homemade dressing, and there's dinner!  For hot food, ya stir-fry or throw some meat and veg in the oven and there's dinner!

I keep a big vat of basmati brown rice, all cooked up with onion, carrots and spices, in a Gladware container in the fridge.  That way, I have it ready to go all week.  I also keep the aforementioned bags of salad, and I just keep some cooked meat on hand and you can toss any or all of that together and BOOM:  delish!  I keep grape tomatos and actual grapes around to toss into salads or rice dishes, fresh veggies, oh--and they also have bags of "broccoli slaw", which is GREAT in stir-fries, casseroles, salads.  I'm telling ya, this thing is easy once you get in the swing/hang of it!

Stick around here, we'll get you situated!  And I echo everyone else's WELCOME!

P.S.  BirkieGirl, you are RIGHT, by all means, avoid, avoid, AVOID getting any surgery on your sinuses!  This diet will fix you, I say that with virtual certainty.  I actually even eat dairy which is a big Type O avoid, and it doesn't bother me too much because, imho, it is the WHEAT that is the biggest culprit, but that said, if I were you, I would definitely cut out dairy at first, too, since you are having sinus congestion issues.  Dairy does cause us O's to produce mucous.  But wheat not only does that, it INFLAMES our upper-respiratory passages and, well, just cut it out and see for yourself what happens.  And I would, like I said, cut out dairy, too, in your case, which I hate to say because I personally LOVE including certain dairy items in my diet.  NOT milk, which I DETEST and find repulsive, but I find I love creamy sauces and dressings, so I do use plain, non-fat yogurt often in dressings and dishes, and I occasionally uses cheeses, too, such as cottage cheese and, rarely, cheddar.  Mostly it is just the plain yogurt I partake of.  BUT, I do think you should avoid dairy at first.  Once your sinus congestion clears out (and it WILL), you could try adding certain dairy items back IF and only if you are missing them, because I think wheat is probably your main culprit, but for now, cut out the dairy.  I've been around this community for a loooooooong time and I've observed that, while I personally have a high tolerance for dairy products, I must say that Dr. D is right:  most O's don't, so do cut it out because we want to give your respiratory system the best chance to REALLY clear up and heal itself.

NO wheat, no dairy, and really try to stick to your superfoods/beneficials and neutrals, avoid the avoids, and avoid as much processed, junk food as possible, choosing whole, unprocessed food when you can.  It is so much easier than it probably sounds right now.  If I can do this, anyone on planet earth can.   :K)

yesterday i was doing a volunteer thing for my child's school with a bunch of other parents. while there, i encountered a mom who i don't really know too well, but is a really nice person and i've wanted to get to know better. i noticed she'd lost a LOT of weight. when i inquired, she says "yes, 80 lbs.'. when i asked how..."oh, i've been following that blood type diet".

gcg, that made me smile!
As another one of the oldtimers around here - been here since the mid 90s, I can tell you that there's nothing better you can do for yourself!
I do eat too much dairy and pay for it sometimes but I do try and avoid cow's milk dairy.  I buy goat's milk cheese and almond milk yogurt.
Good luck!

That is the truth!  Sing it, BTD sistah!  Our friend Robin was just saying to me that she was just thinking what a profound gift the BTD/GTD is to us for the rest of our lives, and that was in response to me saying something to that same tune, and now you are saying something to that tune, too.  We are definitely a beautiful, grateful choir, whose joyful chords and harmonies are rising up to the stars.
