Hello,
I have been reviewing all of the foods I eat to make sure I am avoiding the avoids. It seems that most of the foods I eat are neutral with some beneficial thrown in. Is this ok? I know it is probably better than eating avoid foods, but isn't the idea to eat more beneficial foods?

What is compliance?

If you are recovering from an illness or desire weight loss, then 80%-100% of your food choices should be highly beneficial.

If you are a healthy individual over the age of 55, 80% of foods should be beneficial.

If you are under 55 and healthy, 70% or more of your food choices should beneficial.

The remainder of your food choices should be neutral. Avoids should not be eaten.

Beneficials/Superfoods are like a tonic for your system.  They speed healing and help to normalize weight, digestive functions and immune health.

Avoids/Toxins are like poison for your body.  Unless one of them is specifically recommended for a particular medicinal function in one of the Health Library series, they have little redeeming value.  (my opinion = they might be useful if you are in danger of starving and have no other choice.)  

Neutrals provide the nutrients inherent in their own nature.  They are not poisons to the system, nor are they going to do amazing things for the body either.  

It depends on what your health needs and health goals are.  Many of us who are non-secretors, or who are fighting disease, or who are dealing with chronic conditions don't eat very many neutrals, because we want to get well, or stay well or because we want to tip the scales in our favor. I don't eat many neutrals because of a couple of those reasons, plus, I don't have a very big capacity for large volumes of food, so I don't like to waste valuable stomach space.  ;)

Very good!  This is how I see it, too.  (hehe)

I will say that in my early months of getting used to the BTD, I ate mostly neutrals also.  It was a way that I could get used to the changes, as well as eat up the food in my house.  Now when I eat neutrals, I feel extremely unsatisfied.

I disagree. There are lots of reasons to eat neutrals:

1) When cooking for multiple family/household members with different food lists, including neutral foods allows for many more "foods in common" that everybody can eat.

2) It adds in variety; it can be boring to eat the same foods all the time, especially if many of your own personal "beneficials" are difficult or expensive to obtain locally. Why eat only 2 kinds of vegetables when you can have a dozen choices if you include neutral foods?

For some people, adding in variety could be the difference between sticking with or giving up on it completely, as they get so  bored with eating the same foods over and over again that BTD becomes a burden.

For others, it means having enough foods to rotate so they minimize the chance of allergic reactions.

It's important to include beneficial foods in your diet daily, but for most people there's no reason to completely exclude neutrals.

I agree with ruthiegirl. Everything is about balance. While it may be necessary to adhere to a high beneficial diet under certain curcumstances, enjoying a variety of foods will help us maintain the greatest benefit of all--    :)

Does anyone remember the place where Dr. D. wrote about a patient that only ate beneficials and lost so much weight that they looked anorexic?

I can't imagine that happening unless the person really restricted their meal plan or eliminated lots of their beneficial food choices for other reasons than blood type.  

If Dr. D said it, then it happened.  But I look at my food list and I have so many options, I could never eat all that food.  There is such a variety of color and textures and nutritional richness and delicious tastes and fats . . (drool)

I like the idea of variety and having lots of choices. I also think that neutrals are ok if dr.d says they will not hurt you. Plus, try it out yourself and see.

I personally am fine with neutral vegetables, but definitely do not feel well with neutral grains.

All about choice.

Check out page 40 of Eat Right 4 Your Type, but that isn't the one I was thinking about. I agree that it seems impossible for this to happen using SWAMI.
