I am completely new to this and have lots of questions.  My first is I love butter so what do I do that is manageable as a type A?
My second is - soy is recommended but I ate a fair amount and it gave me a bad headache.  Any suggestions?

Heggin, are you currantly following the Eat Right 4 Your Type diet plan for A's?

Clarified butter is a good alternative for A's.  If you need the recipe, let me know.  Ghee is another name for it.  :)

I don't eat things that give my headaches, hives, ...

Give your gut some time to heal and you be able to eat soy products.

Also soy come in many forms.  The more processed products often contain other ingredients that give people headaches (carrageenan for example).

I do better with cultured soy products like tempeh and miso.

Many headaches are from a high toxin level.  Since soy is very beneficial for Type A, i am assuming that your headaches are from suddenly eating a significantly larger amount of it, which caused the body to engage in a large quantity of healing.  I would eat a smaller quantity initially to allow the body to heal in smaller increments or just focus on other beneficial foods for now...

Most of us around here make our own ghee.  It is very easy and less expensive than buying ghee.  Simmer butter on very low until the sediment on the bottom of the pot turns golden color.  This process removes the milk solids.  Then cool for a few minutes and strain through a very fine stainless steel strainer into a clean jar.  It can be used as butter or for stir-frying.  It gets hard in the refrigerator, so you can keep a small amount out at room temperature.

You might try eating fresh soybeans and otherwise, as C_sharp said, sticking to fermented soy - miso, tempeh and tofu in small amounts.

Soy is a good food if you are type A*. Forget the phytate and rat thyroid stuff. By this I do not always mean that soy will make you FEEL good if you are type A. Some of the good things soy is doing may, in fact, not make you feel so great after you eat it, but it is good for you none the less. Here I am thinking of the effect of soy lectin on the blood and immune system.

Anyway, think of soy as a good detoxification medicine for type A. Detox is not always pleasant. If eating it daily is too much for your system right now, cut back -but eat some!

The Type A diet also has a large amount of other veggie-based proteins and a surprising amount of seafood (even some poultry) for a 'vegetarian diet'.

Unlike the O diet, which seems to have its milieu determined by great abundance, the 'A diathesis' may have been shaped more by scarcity. I might even conjecture that those early hunted-out type As must have been fighting off starvation by chewing on a lot of grass and acorns. This diet and resultant lowered resistance to disease was what probably killed off many of the local type O's.

Though not a diet of super nutrient density, the A Diet does tend to produce the best long term health scenario for type A in the simple sense of survival.
