I was finally able to get SWAMI-Xpress last week and when I ran it I found that garlic is an avoid for me. :'( I use garlic in almost all of my cooking and I just can't figure out why I should avoid it.  ??) I mean it's beneficial or neutral for all blood types and yet I have it as an avoid as a 45% Gatherer. This just doesn't make any sense. :-/

We're all unique individuals. The things that make garlic "bad" for a person aren't common enough to cover an entire blood type or genotype. SWAMI is more than just a blend of BTD and GTD; it also factors in other things about your health, and is much more specific than any book can be.

It's up to you how compliant you're ready to be. It's reasonable to use up the fresh garlic in the house before omitting it from your diet. You may choose to not be so cautious about spices while adhering to the food lists in other categories.

It's certainly possible to prepare tasty foods without garlic. The simplest thing is to increase the other spices used in a dish. Onions and ginger are flavorful and add "oomph" to many recipes; onions and hot peppers work in many places that ginger doesn't.

I stopped using garlic about a year ago because it was making me feel weird.  I used to eat it like it was going out of style.  Raw, cooked, by itself, in things.  I think I overdid it.

Anyways, one thing I read is that garlic an onions can be hard on people with low adrenals.  It's in Nourishing Traditions.  And I seem to fit the profile.  Onions make my heart arrhythmia kick up.  So I don't eat those either.  I love both.

Thanks everybody for their comments. I don't think I'm quite ready to completely give up garlic, but I shall be working on it.  :'(

I'm not quite sure I understand what your link to Schwartzman Phenomenon (Schwartzman Reaction) has to do with avoiding garlic, so maybe you could clarify this a little? ??)

Garlic tends to activate the bile ducts which can make sensitive people feel worse. This will abate in time, but if you add a cup or two of licorice tea to your day it will abate faster.

it's an avoid for me, too, and i'm trying to wrap my brain around cooking without. how am i going to make a tomato sauce without garlic?!  it's what gives the most flavor...my sauce is tomato, onion, garlic, basil, salt and pepper.  and pepper is also an avoid.

have you gotten rid of it from your diet?  if so, how are you doing?

My friend's 9yo son is allergic to garlic- he can't have even a trace amount, or they need to use the epipen and rush him to the hospital. He gets red, watery eyes when there's too much garlic in the air (from lots of spicy food being served or heated up.) She's been cooking garlic-free ever since the allergy was diagnosed when he was a nursing infant (she gave up all his allergens too, until he weaned.)

She just omits the garlic and increases all the other spices used in recipes. She uses onion liberally.

i can understand in life and death situations, yes, of course one would refrain.

i'm coming from a straight on taste standpoint.  i love the flavor garlic lends to dishes and can't imagine how increasing spices and onions would compensate for the lack of it.  i have used garlic liberally in all my years of cooking.  in fact, i tend to overuse, nearly doubling or tripling the called for amount within a recipe.

i look at my SWAMI list and i may as well stop eating.  the list of veggies i'm allowed to have is minimal and i'm supposed to find a way to squeeze in 7 servings a day?!  i also can't eat carrots, celery, two other ingredients essential to soups and stews of any kind.

i know, i know, don't look at this as what i can't eat.  but i love food, and love cooking, but this SWAMI is making me want to stop cooking/eating, period.  sorry, this is just daunting and frustrating.

This is quite common in foods that you are sensitive, allergic, or basically shouldn't be eating...

I understand this mind-set...  It was very difficult for me when I started ER4YT, as I had to accept that about 80-90% of the foods/recipes I had been eating were going to be eliminated or changed to "fit" the diet.  Allow yourself to accept the challenge and start remaking the dishes to be good while being different.  There isn't anything that says a dish MUST have garlic, only that it always has in your house.  There are many other members of the onion family that you can use.  Although none have the same flavor as garlic, you'll be able to eat beneficial foods for you that are tasty.

If the SWAMI list seems daunting, maybe ease into it. The "black dot" foods are meant to be avoided for a time, then carefully re-introduced to see how well you tolerate them. They're never intended to be a major part of your diet.

However, these foods ARE far less toxic for you than the outright "avoids" are. Maybe you'd do best to treat any "black dot" spices and vegetables as "neutral" for now, then wean off of them once you've gotten more used to the food list. It's not the "ideal" way to use SWAMI,  but it is a valid one, and is far  better than ignoring the lists completely because it seems too hard.

Do you still get onions and ginger? How about zucchini, beets, winter squashes, and sweet potatoes? You can still make excellent soups without carrots or celery. Chop up a whole mess of veggies you can eat (but not leafy ones), roast or saute in olive oil (or any other compliant oil or fat) with sea salt. Then add water and broth, cooked beans if you want, and add the leafy greens along with the liquid.

Will you get the exact same taste with zucchini and beets that you get with carrots and celery? Of course not. But you can make something delicious anyway.

oh, i thought black dot meant "avoid at all cost"!

no zucchini or squash, but yes to onions and ginger, beets & sweet potatoes.  and i'm not a huge fan of beans.  just bought dried chickpeas the other day and they do taste much better than canned, but still not a huge fan of beans in general.  i'll figure it out soon enough.  :)

Yeah, I remember that reality check also!  (scared) haha!  Well, at least it explained why I had the health issues that I had all my life.  I would say that at least 90% of the food I always ate were avoids/toxins.  Whoa!  I had to (had the opportunity to) learn to shop and cook all over again, and I did accomplish this.  There was a learning curve and I was not 100% successful the first year.  I tried to at least eliminate the worst avoids and learn to work with a few Beneficial foods that I wasn't accustomed to.

The surprising thing for me was how drastically my tastes and cravings changed as I gave my body the chance to eat what was really healthy food for myself.  If I were offered the things I used to eat a decade ago, I would not even be tempted.  I can honestly say that I love the foods that I eat now.  But it was a process and it took time.

OK, so don't use beans in your soups. Play around with the spices and veggies that are on your neutral and beneficial lists, and see what you can come up with!

I use a lot of beans in my soups because I'm working with a very small food budget, and beans are a cheap source of protein.  

Another soup idea: after cooking, puree the soup for a creamy texture, rather than  a broth-based soup. You can puree all the veggies, or just do half of them so you have chunks of veggies in a creamy base.

I know this may not be what you want to hear right now - but focus on what you can eat - not what you can't. I know how frustatrting it is when you "loose" a favorite food or spice. Look on your list and try something different that is beneficial. A whole new world of flavor will open up to you.  :)

I always loved garlic, most of my favorite dishes had garlic.  I used it to fight colds and flu too.  Finally my body said "no more garlic!".  It really made me feel weird.  So I dropped garlic and picked up onions.  Onions seem to agree with me and make me feel good.  I keep chopped onions in the freezer so I can add them quickly to meals with no crying and bought gluten free onion powder to make onion rice bread instead of garlic bread.  They don't taste the same but they are just as good and quite yummy.

Double check all your measurements on swami, cruise around the forum for comments on measurement etc. preferably get a practitioner to run or check your measurements. then you will know for sure.

Come clean, what's on your veggie list that has you saying you've got nothing to eat?  LOL.   :D

I have a feeling it's longer than it FEELS right now.  Just new.  New is hard.  I know.  I've changed a lot too.  You don't HAVE to change.  But if you feel like it might HELP you in some way, it might be a good thing to try.  But yeah, it's not easy to cut out stuff.  

But, you might be better off for it.  You could always give it a chance for a little while.  See if it makes a difference or not.  And then decide from there.  But sometimes it takes a good while to notice a difference.  Sometimes it doesn't.  

When I first started this diet, I wasn't sure about my Blood type.  My Mom said she THOUGHT I was an A.  So I started eating like an A.  I ate chicken like it was going out of style.  Well, I ate it pretty frequently.  Well lo and behold I did a test after a year of being on the diet, and it turned out I was an AB.  I quit eating chicken and I kid you not.  I lost 5 lbs in 3 days and my stomach went from a little rounded to like FLAT.  Chicken is a problem for B's and AB's.  Or CAN be a problem.  And it was for me.  My arrhythmia reduced a bunch too because my guts weren't pushing up on my chest.  I wasn't even overweight.  But it made me feel better.  

Avoiding garlic might not be that big for you.  But you'll never know until you try.  I miss chicken.  But I get all kinds of other meats, that's it's not a huge deal.  I miss it most because it's convenient.  My Grocery store has those whole chickens, ready to go.  And I get them for my family.  One less thing to cook.  But I still have to make my own dinner that time.  So........  But it's worth it for me.

Check out this plant- I don't know how it would rate, as it is quite like garlic, tastes like garlic and is still in the allium family.

Maybe one of the 'very-sensitive-to-garlic' people have tried this and can give you feedback.

Also, i was wondering...eating less garlic has to be better for you than eating lots of it, even though, ultimately you shouldn't eat it at all.
So, I was thinking...there are different ways to cook with garlic: adding it at the start vs adding it at the end, grating vs chopping vs crushing.
I am not a garlic expert, but you'll probably know which method gives you the most garlic flavour with the least amount of actual garlic...go with that until you are ready to go without :)

Do you think you could do that?

On the other issue (lack of vegetables)...at the same time as I was starting out on the BTD I also had an ELISA allergy test and between that and the BTD I literally was down to like 4 vegetables! That was hard, but thankfully only for a short time as the antibodies died off.
At some stage I also did an exclusion diet and THAT was the worst thing I had to do ever! One week of pears and lamb and white fish- nothing else bar a pinch of salt! I tell you, after that nothing is hard ;) It's not as nice and it's awkward and annoying and not fair and all of that, but you WILL find your way, I am certain. It took me a whole year (or thereabouts) to 'give up' wheat- I thought I had to starve  :o
So, I echo what the others have told you...find new favourites, substitute, change your habits (if you don't like tomato sauce without garlic, don't eat tomato sauce- have curry instead :)), experiment, discover, invent...PLAY with it!
The diet was never meant to make you feel like you are in a straight jacket :)
