Cocoa contains flavonoids, a group of antioxidant compounds that studies have shown can help with hypertension, insulin sensitivity, platelet function, and immune response, Griel says.

Carob trees (Ceratonia siliqua) have been farmed in the Middle East for at least 4,000 years. Their edible pods are traditionally eaten on Tu B’shevat, a Jewish holiday celebrating trees. The seeds inside the pods were also traditionally used to weigh diamonds, which is where we get the word carat from.

Coffee must be just washing off the burned part of the beans, taking with it the caffeine/therefore has no calories.  Interesting,

I bought Chatfields carob powder and was shocked at the calories.. First off it takes some getting used to the flavor.. It is a super benef for me... so how to use it..

IF I where to screen it through coffee filter would it still have calories?  

What is carob? This is the 3rd time I bought it and am determined to get used to it.. I will say it feels good in my stomach.. can it serve as a replacement for the (beans)  legume section in swami?  

I am using it like 'cocoa' powder (decaf would taste better.) .. I use only hot water for it..

for my current diet I am using it for a few calories at breakfast time, as I am not supposed to have more.  If I really feel starved I have added Protein powder to it and chug both like medicine : down the hatch.  :-/

But really can one figure this out to make it taste better?  Does trehalose have calories? what would it taste like ? I am chicken to try?

I stir carob into peanut butter with some beet syrup and roll into balls. (It is very stiff) Keep them in the fridge for a quick snack on the run. Delish!! Anyone who can have yogurt could enjoy it stirred in with a little sweetener. I liked it that way until I couldn't eat yogurt anymore. I used to make nutritious brownies with it when my sons were young. I'm working on using it with buckwheat right now. Buckwheat is my new rave - I've always liked it but plan to make more use of it in different ways.
Oh, and, Goldie, I have found that carob will immediately soothe my stomach too. I'm a big fan of carob.

Goldie, I just adore carob - I use it in my smoothie every morning and it's such a feel good food it just sets me up for the day.   It has way less calories etc than chocolate does.  It's soooooo good!

Spring, I love buckwheat too.  It's my new fave bread sub.  I make it into flat bread/crepe flat breads and use it to 'wrap' things like lettuce with hummus, fish, peppers etc - they're so good and so versatile for lunches etc.  I love this way of eating!!!!

Oh and forgot to say earlier - this 'way of life' really isn't about counting calories.  It's about what works for one’s body and what doesn't.  Personally, cocoa is much more fattening than carob and it's better for me than chocolate so......  I eat a few squares (maybe 3 tops) of chocolate per day, but I eat far more carob - it just makes me feel so good.  Just my two pence worth... Andy :)

I went through a stage where I seemed to really need carob...Maybe I overdid it (as I am prone to do with most things) as now I can't even cope with the smell of it really... Odd :-/
Goldie how are you with soy &/or other legumes? It is part of that family... so could that be part of the problem for you?

I do NOT worry about the calories! It's a beneficial food, and the portion size is something like a tablespoon, which only has 3 grams of sugars and 25 calories. 1 tablespoon in 8oz of hot water is incredibly satisfying, and I'm not going to gorge on it. Just yesterday, I was craving a rice cake with butter and jelly, but had a cup of hot carob instead. Had I gone with the rice cakes, I probably could have eaten 2-3 of them- but one cup of hot carob stopped those carb cravings in its tracks.

I don't care what diet you're on- even if you're counting points or counting every calorie you ingest. 25 extra calories in the whole day is NOT going to have any significant impact. (But when I was low-carbing, those 5 carbs made a difference. So I'd go with cocoa and stevia; an overall less healthful choice.)
