A few nights ago I was standing in the bathroom brushing my teeth and I passed out. I've never done that before. It was pretty scary. I had had a few stressful days and I hadn't been eating as much as I should have. Saw the doctor today and he seems to think it was stress/depression that had built up. I'm getting blood tests done tomorrow to make sure everything is ok. I requested a thyroid test as well since I've been wondering about that lately. I'm going to find out my blood type for sure now. I kind of wondered if I might be eating for the wrong type and that might have added to the passing out.

I was out just a few seconds. I hit my thigh on the side of the toilet and I have a big bruise  but otherwise I'm fine.

My boyfriend stayed up all night and checked on me every hour to make sure I was breathing and whatnot :)

The passing out in A woman.. is not unheard of .. seems stress might be able to do that.  I am however glad you followed through with a Dr visit, but beyond that please stay vigilant for the next 6 month.  Depending on the type of stress you went through, some stress is worse than other stress.  Some can affect your Brain health and create delayed issues.

Finding out who you are is important, but KNOWING what you ate and how compliant you where during your days of stress might give you more clues to what might have happened..

Past that .. relaxing is the best you can do, dealing with the stress, by figuring out what you could be doing to lessen it.  I was stressed for 2 days, affecting me in a bad way, and even as i went through the hours of it, I at least had some means to lessen the effects JUST BY KNOWING what stress does to my body ssperat from my brain.  It took me at least 2 sessions of sleep (my way to cope) and now I am calm and relaxed, almost wondering how I was able to be so stressed and hours later so calm, even though nothing changed from what caused the stress.  The change is in my brain, my adrenolin, my stress hormones and the my insides.

Find that space for you - reviewing all that led up to the moment.  and then breath deeply, get up a little less fast, and just all around relax even as you read all my words.  NO need to stress.  just looking at life from a little distance and heal the emotional as well as the physical.  I expect that you will be OK ... and wish you much good health.

Either you are a fatigues A, or you have an environmental toxin of some sort in your bathroom like a mould or artificial fragrance and you are an O.

positive thoughts being sent you way.

Hope you are feeling better.  That must have been extremely scary.  Maybe you aren't eating enough?  It could be low blood pressure or low blood sugar.  Hope you get some answers soon.

Hi Rachel,
You have my sympathy.  I started fainting at age 16. It has happened off and on and is not a regular feature of my life.
Invariably it happens when I'm standing and very tired, anxiety, stress, that time of the month etc. Low blood pressue/volume can factor in to it.
I have bruised my face and bumped back of my head.

I had a complete medical work up including wearing a heart monitor and nothing came up.  Doctor said it is a vaso-vagal response that some people have.  Hopefully you are just experiencing something similar.
Did you have any warning before it happened, any feelings of light headedness?
Were you feeling anxious maybe?

Rachel, I've experienced near blacking out from having extremely low blood sugar, not eating much
prior....  You mentioned you hadn't been eating much the past few days in addition to your stress level being high......Your adrenals need sodium...just wonder if your adrenals were burning out....How long had it been when you passed out since you'd eaten something?  Were you also dehydrated?  It's possible to be so dehydrated that your electrolyte balance was really off...causing you to faint.

Hope you are taking good care of yourself, eating regular meals, drinking plenty of fluids...maybe
adding some sea salt to your water along with a few squirts of lemon juice.

My A daughter used to pass out/faint when under stress such as a pain, and look as if she was about to just before a dancing competition when she was very young.

I've been under a lot of stress for a year or two and been near also, but fortunately not actually done so.... one reason I'm back here for getting on the wagon support.

I'm glad you are seeing the doc for a check up, didn't hurt yourself too much and wish you well.

Interesting info Chloe - I've been craving and eating sea salt plus drinking more water lately.  My house move is almost complete after 3 years of messing about with selling and then buying and also clearing my late mother's house.

Glad you are ok. Blacking out can be really scary. Low blood sugar or blood pressure likely causes and sometimes rarely hormones. You are right to get checked out by the doc.

Goldie- It happened tuesday night. Sunday I had gone to my brothers to eat with him for his birthday. We had lasagna, garlic bread, salad, and strawberry cheesecake which was all abundant with wheat and dairy, which seem to bother me quite a lot. Of course I wasn't going to turn it down. The day after I was really irratable. Got frustrated and a bit anxious. Then tuesday morning I had a small disagreement with someone and ended up bawling and laying in bed almost the whole day. My emotions were so out of whack. I'm pretty convinced the wheat and dairy played a part in that.

Policychecker- We do have those plug ins in the bathroom. I absolutely hate them but my family acts like they need them. Maybe if I tell them its detrimental to our health they'll throw them out.

Jane and Chloe- I knew I was eating less than I had been but I had just had a fairly good sized bowl of cereal prior to passing out. I also drink lots of water most of the time but I hadn't had as much that day.

Lin- You have it exact. My doctor did say it was a vaso-vagal response. No warning, I was feeling fine except of course I had been crying all day. I did feel really tired and like my sinuses were blocked up but I assumed that was normal.

Everyone else- Thank you for all the well wishes. This is the most compassionate forum I've ever found online.

Rachael,
You describe what used to happen to me before the Gluten/Dairy free diet.  I've read dairy can really mess with your hormones and create the irritable/anxious moods, and getting really out of whack over small disagreements.
Can't remember if you do meditation but I found that and breathing slow and deep very helpful.  It helps calm the nervous system which us type As need.  
Glad you have an answer and you are exploring healthy alternatives at your young age.  
Good for you to be so tuned in and recognizing your triggers.
Most of the time when I fainted I would get a little light headed first, if that happens you have time to lay down which can stop the fainting.  Also taking deep breaths as most of us don't breathe very deep anyway.

Ok, it's been a little over a year since this happened. I've learned a lot and have gotten better at sticking to my diet. I'm still struggling in some areas but I would say that I'm feeling 70% better than I used to. Yesterday however I had a similar experience to what happened before I blacked out last time. I had a disagreement with someone and cried and moped in bed all day not eating anything until about 8pm. I had some rice chex and a banana and felt a little better then had a small amount of fish, peas, and pears for dinner. Somewhere between an hour to three hours later I was feeling weak, shaky, and sweating. I have been wondering if I am hypoglycemic. I've been reading up on it and it seems to match well. I can't go to town for a few hours without getting hungry, tired, and irritable and having to grab a snack. I eat often throughout the day or this happens at home as well. It also seems like it might tie into the weird random symptoms that I have that my doctors have all dismissed because I am "perfectly healthy". I'd like to know if anyone else is hypoglycemic and has symptoms like me that I've never been able to pin on something. For example, my blue nails, having to sleep 10 hours on average and still feeling tired, the dark circles under my eyes (which may be unrelated, I was guessing that could be my explorer liver having problems), getting out of breath from walking up stairs, feeling dizzy if I try to exercise, seeing spots sometimes if I get up too fast from lying down, feeling like I can't breathe....etc. I keep feeling like a hypochondriac (I've heard this is common of nonnies lol) because I keep jumping from different possibilities but they won't quite match up, like me thinking I had anemia but I get plenty of iron.

At the time this happened a lot of people who commented mentioned low blood pressure or low blood sugar and I mistook them for the same thing. I have used the blood pressure machine several times before and only once did I register as low so I didn't look into it further. I wasn't familiar with low blood SUGAR and was still trying to figure out my blood type at the time so i wasn't focused.

This also makes sense why my swami portions seem too small for me. I need protein A LOT and often or I don't feel good. And why when I go over my grain portions, or sugar, or even fruit I feel lousy. I want to try a hypoglycemic diet and closely monitor how I feel but I'm a little confused about it. I've been thinking maybe I would do better with NO grains as my serving allowance on my swami is very small anyway and it just opens up the craving for more and I usually end up going overboard. I've also been thinking of watching my fruit intake as I seem to crave sweet bananas at breakfast or for a snack or to end a meal. If I am hypoglycemic do I need to have something starchy/sugary to help regulate it? Should I be wary of my juice intake? (It is very occasional and lately has been black cherry, blueberry, cranberry, and sometimes apple.) Or would focusing on protein and veggies be the best thing?

I happen to have an ounce of prevention and the diet in that does sound helpful (maybe a little too heavy on grains though). I'm also going to order Dr D's diabetes book from the library. Suggestions or advice?

I think I'm finally on the right path I just need a little guidance.

I would start by upping the protein, veggies, and fat. Then slowly  cut back on fruit and grains- but if you cut out the carbs too fast, you'll end up with even lower blood sugar temporarily.

How much juice have you been having at once? An ounce of juice with or right after a meal is probably fine, but 8oz is way too much, especially on an empty stomach!

I'd definitely suggest cutting down on fruit, especially if you've been eating way more than SWAMI recommends for you. My SWAMI only gives me half a cup of fruit a day, and that seems about right. I don't even eat fruit every day.

Swami gives me 3 servings of fruit: Portion size 1/2 cup fruit or one small to medium sized fruit. I have had varying amounts of juice depending on how much I'm wanting at the time. Some days it has been maybe 3 oz, others 8oz (yes that was between meals, whoops), and most days its just water. As for the carbs (by that I mean grains) maybe I should still eat one very small portion a day, is that what you're suggesting?

Try having the recommended grains per day- the full amount, but no more, and have it late in the day, as part of a full meal. Either eat both servings with dinner or have one with lunch and one with dinner.

You remind me of myself when I was in mhy  20's.  
There can be more than one thing that causes this.  I too wondered about  hypoglycemia.
I have read some people have more trouble keeping sugar levels balanced, not necessarily hypoglycemia.   It may be a case of understanding your Metabolic Type ...a Doctor put me on this when I complained I was hungry all the time.  It turned out I was not eating enough protein for my body type. The same doctor recommended I not eat fruit alone, add some protein.
You have a sensitive body and probably need to fine tune your diet.  
You are on the right track.

Ruthie, I will try it. Unless it leads me to overeating. Lin, I am reading that the liver and adrenals may be connected to hypoglycemia. It makes sense to me. I don't know anything at all about Metabolic Type. But I do know I have a good metabolism, probably high.

Rachel...this is a bit dicribed by D.D. when he mentiones *complete lack of energy*.... I know this as well..... it arrived to me heavily while having had a very stressful weekend in Germany during a conference and when I wanted to come back sundays night I really had the impression to have been knelt down of the finest...  :-/ can't even tell you how I managed it to drive home from Winterthur to Z├╝rich .... and yep those situations are really scary but while knowing about this... it didn't overwhelmed me too much ;) (pick_nose)(smile)

Possum I had an EKG at one point in time. I was "perfectly healthy" as usual. I'm guessing its my circulation. Doctors frustrate me so much and I get tired of mentioning the same things over and over and getting answers like oh that's fine. I'm sure exercise would help me greatly but its one thing at a time right now.

Rachel, mirror image of me. I am turning it around. I wish I would have found my local doc sooner. I would suggest this... http://www.functionalmedicine.org/practitioner_search.aspx?id=117 - these folks look at the whole body as a system.

Heavy metals may be an issue. Mercury interferes with gluten and dairy enzymes, I just learned. I was told after I get rid of it in my body, these issues will go away. I don't feel like I want to add back wheat, though. Bread is too addictive for me and it "leaks" in most everyone to some extent. Caused a lot of havoc on my brain even as it felt good as I was doing it. Pass.

BTW, unfortunately a great majority of mainstream medicine does not think functionally, YET. They are focused on the acute model taken from emergency medicine. It is a symptom/cause model that is usually oversimplified to find a drug or surgery that alleviates the symptom without much consideration of the overall physiology and how that will play into it. Chronic issues are not going to be effectively addressed by this model. Functional issues- hey the body is saying I have a problem, HELP ME!- may be more subtle in that a test is normal. The test won't show the issue until you are so out of wack that they can focus on disease. Test norms are based on bell shaped curves for a group of people, not on your individual physiology. They should be measured against YOU. There are lots of people with subclinical thyroid issues feeling like c**p with docs saying they are normal, when on a much deeper level- it's not just a thyroid issue, but a systemic problem that needs more than just a pill to pop. The future of TRUE medicine is on a much deeper level than most have been taught in med school. Fortunately, I feel like the public is waking up and beginning to demand better care. I think naturopathic physicians trained in the major 4 year universities have had a leg up on this model for a long time (though some do think in the manor of a "greener" simple cause/effect way). I think you almost have to have some discernment about a physician's approach, no matter what model they are trained in.  Unfortunately, naturopathic physicians aren't licensed in all the states yet.

I get close to blacking out when I haven't eaten and my blood sugar gets too low. So far I have always had a warning, though, in that I start feeling really strange. I also get dizzy and nearly black out if I stand up too fast from a squatting position near the floor, like when I'm looking in my cabinets under the counter, for example. I have to sit down or lean against something for a few seconds till it passes. A friend of mine passed out when she went to visit someone at the hospital that had been in an accident. It was too emotional for her. She broke out some teeth when she fell. My daughter passed out when she saw how terribly painful it was for me to have allergy tests done on my back, with little plugs of skin removed for the testing. So blacking out can come from different causes, including breathing something foreign or toxic to your body or even the perfumes in soaps.

Rachel and other fainters,
It was pointed out to me when I'm anxious (and other people too) I'm either holding my breath without knowing it or breathing shallow.  I've also been told I tend to breathe shallow, this may be something to pay attention to as you would be low on oxygen.

I've fainted in the bathroom also, that is one of the worst places to faint!

I'm enjoying reading the comments, may respond to more individuals later.

Today I started the lemon water. Last time I tried it it kind of made me gag and my stomach felt bad afterwards. This time I'm using meyer lemons and made sure to get the proportions right 1/2 lemon to 8oz water. I was able to drink the whole glass :) I've also started on a concentrated multivitamin that isn't BTD but from what I can tell it looks ok. If I notice any ill effects I will stop taking it. I even tried 1oz mozzarella string cheese and seem to not be getting the mucous/ stuffy nose. In fact I think that I may have much more trouble with sugars right now. If I don't see symptoms tomorrow morning I may be able to add cheese back in small amounts. Yay! I'm still having sugar cravings but the hypoglycemic symptoms seem to be getting better as I'm working on them.

Rachel D give a try for several much smaller meals a day....or justamente some snacks  ??) :D(ok) during the day to get stabilized bls.....btw the more I go for aminoacids or just augment my meat & fish intake the less came bls-imbalaces.... :)

I almost had a hypo attack just reading about the emotional upset, the foods you had eaten and not eaten! Several members of my family have/had hypoglycemia including my husband. If they ate too many carbs, look out! All A-types. They all learned to balance their protein and carbs. I learned from their experiences and have never had any serious problems with it because I make sure I get enough protein every day and don't overdo the carbs. Yes, focusing on proteins and veggies are the way to go! I would think that would be especially true for an O-type! Good luck! (smile)

I think you need this additional information to fine tune your diet.

Are you following a SWAMI, or the GTD book for Explorers.  Explorers are SOOOO individualized, more than any other GenoType.
