Does anyone know of some good supplements for reducing alcohol dependence and the related sugar cravings? This is for a Type A friend who is not totally on board the BTD yet although he has been a vegetarian for 30 years.

Would l-Glutamine powder be helpful? How about Dr D's Methyl B12?

He has been able to abstain, but has crazy sugar cravings... eating a lot of candies.

abstain, meaning he drinks on and off?

let him follow the liver support protocols, and all related like the liver cleanse and the castor oil pack etc

Well, he said  he has stopped drinking totally. No way he would follow the protocols... too much trouble for this busy guy  :-/.

what about a yeast protocol assuming he has a candida problem from lots of sweets. perhaps not specifically cadida but SIBO perhaps.

extra good fat OILS and minimal carbs and starches

personally I would also go low fodmap too.

does he have other issues like constipation or the reverse, moodswings etc?

mg's,aminoacids,B-vits,l'acetyl-carnitin, alpha-lipoic acid and a good will to stop immediately ;)

Thanks for all your suggestions. Of course I understand there is no quick-fix solutions for this. One has to do the work. But I cannot influence the person into having iron-clad will and discipline to do all the work. The best thing I can do is to suggest something simple so he stops with the sugar-craving first. Isa, you mentioned amino acids. I am wondering if l-Glutamine would help. Yes, vitamin B should help calm his nerves and reduce the cravings, right?

yup so it is and especially l'glutamin is a fine helper as l'acetyl-carnitin & alpha lipoic acid help to detox the body quicker and make people better to get back on their mental healths as well ;) ;D.....

age matters .. why he stopped matters, suport matters and the reasons he started to mmedicate in the first place..

for me choc does wonders.. but I don't drink- I eat.. and I am O

for me BTD was needed to make small steps in fining courrage to make it through one day at a time looking for help, support and allwoing me to have a 'scream' sometimes..

food as a replacement is a good idea.. could the person be diabetic or be one by inheritance?

There also is a pill that can be taken by those who wish to stop but have a hard time.. it makes the effect of alcohol different..  don't know much about it, but people in AA might know about it..

The liver gets cleansed by BTD food.. the brain needs choc for me.. he might need something else especially for a while..

candy might be a bridge.. its ok for a few month.. I used to put HARD candy in front of kids and teens and after a short while they got old in the open bowl and the fruit dissapeared..

fruit might be another food to keep the mouth busy.. but it is the hand to mouth action that the candy provides.. it takes time to overcome not only the ingestion habits but most of all the time one was looking forward to putting 'something' in the mouth.. making smoothies might be a way to retrain..

retraining and substituting with other pleasures is important, anger expressions are another, cooking might be fun if not done to begin with.. drinking smoothies with yogurt cultures might fix the intestines, and the B abd calcium relaxes..

watching tv that has no violence like old movies might help, a cry here and there is a good thing, not being told what to do is another.. it feels good to help ..others.. and one self..

BTD spices in foods might really add to life..  colors matter in room surroundings.. changing the furniture around makes for less habit forming behavior.. new glass ware might help, to break visual habits..

Standing in front of the mirror every morning saying to one self: i am ok.. or "I" am ok, or I 'am' OK. or I am 'OK'.. or all three ..

another few words I listened to recently:  I am the beloved of G d.    makes up for many hurts.

I've heard magnesium deficiency plays a role.
