What are y'alls thoughts on the juicing and smoothie trends?

Is it healthy? a good way to lose weight? Hype?

It is an easy way to get nutrients for those starting with weak digestion. Very fibrous too.

Juicing is not a trend, people have been doing it i think since the 70's.  I think it's a great way to supplement your diet, especially if you have a hard time getting in your daily produce.  

I think smoothies are best done with fruits and juicing is best done with veggies, though i sometimes add in a little fruit to sweeten it up a little.  ;)

I use a VitaMix to make green smoothies.

I find it an easy way to up raw vegetable consumption.

I do it because I hope it makes nutrients more available.

I do not track how it affects weight, but I presume that when I incorporate fruit in the smoothie, I am not eating a low calorie food.

OK everyone.. for me it's JUICE the vegetables and eat fruit whole..

Smoothies: Are you saying they are food mushed to a thick substance leaving all the pulp?? keep all the calories? like a banana smoothy, with nuts and yogurt added?? that is a smoothy?

I never thought of it that way... but that would make sense..

Juice of carrots or celery leaves the pulp out and gets absorbed quicker.. the pulp is thrown out.. I would not know about calories.

I believe in both.. interchangable..

about dropping weight I don't know... but when I feel satisfied I am less likely to eat foods I should not.. Getting nutrients in juice form is quick, pleasant and sure to absorb.. but can get expensive as one should never juice unless it is with organic vegetables.

Fruit smoothies are filling .,... but most often one can eat way more than when one has to eat the fruit whole.. so a banana, a apple and or a pear is like 3-400 calories, where one banana is about 80..

Spinning or 'smoothing' might harm some fruit.. so I am in favor of eating the fruit whole..

Vegetables are more difficult to eat enough of, so making juice makes it easy to absorb.. lots of it.  I like Dandelion for loads of good reasons.. detox and other things but they are bitter, so you better have a liking for bitter things..  Carrots might be to sweet if one drank a big glass and was prone to diabetes..

I was doing a fast and I juiced for two weeks solid after the water fast... Nothin but juice , I made two pints a day of juice and it cost me about 30 to 35 dollars a week, using organic produce.  I still juice every morning and drink it along with my breakfast.  My juice has Kale, collards, chard, carrots apple, cucumber, spinach, and when I remember winter squash.  It gives me a lot of energy. Juicing does not really have the fiber in it that Blending does.  You could get by with half the ingredients blending that you do juicing. They say that there is 90% of the nutrients in the juice and only 10% in the fiber (via Dr. Mercola and Cheri Calbom youtube) Unless you need the help of the fiber, the juicing gets to doing its business pretty fast. All last summer I blended green smoothies.  I never added any fruit to it.  I thought that you were not suppose to mix fruit with other foods with the exception of apples and lemons. The fiber in the blended smoothie and from my bowl of oats was more than I could bare at times!

Yes blended smoothies, more fiber. I like the fiber in fruit smoothies.

As pointed out above, a smoothie is made with a blender-the pulp is left in the beverage.

Juice is made using a juicer-often some of the pulp is removed.

Because the pulp is left in a smoothie you get more fiber.



Green Smoothie Recipes:

For those allowed tomatoes

1 bunch dandelion greens
4 Tomatoes
3 cups water

Blend until smooth
or blend water and dandelion leaves until smooth-then blend in the tomatoes and blend just a little bit.


Cleansing smoothie

1 bunch cilantro
1 bunch parsley
3 stalks celery
Juice of 2 small lemons or limes.
2 cups water

Blend until smooth

My great grandfather owned a juice bar in the 1950's in Los Angeles. The guy who did the voice for Donald Duck was a regular customer.

It seems that even back then people knew that juicing was healthy.

I remember my parents being big into juicing (90's). Now that I'm in my 30's (along with my friends), it seems to be the thing (juicing or smoothies) to do. I have friends who swear by juicing for nutrients and others who swear by smoothies for meal replacements (fiber included). I received a Blendtec from Christmas so I'm all about smoothies - and I'm surprisingly full for a good length of time. However, I'm not sure how "good", it is for me in the long run. I have to say with drinking a fruit/veggie smoothie twice a day, my bowels are moving much more than normal! So it's been helping me increase fresh live foods, but is that totally healthy to eat the majority of my live foods pureed?

I see no issue in the last question for a while to give your intestines a cleansing by moving things, keeping fluids in high state to clean out walls.. However I would for sure encourage your to add green stuff to it.. be sure it is organic.. and keep fruits to 2-4 not more.. you might look at what fruit (foods) should be combined or not..

Interesting I never thought of blended foods as a meal replacement, I might just try that..

Well I've been drinking 1 fresh juice everyday. Today is day 39!! Sooo proud of myself.

Because I find it difficult to keep up things. So the way I've been able to continue this, is that I posted a list of the days (daily tracking) I drink my juice and what I put in it; on the wall in my kitchen. It helps keep me motivated and it's a reminder. I often can't remember if and when I ate last. lol

The pores on my face are getting smaller and I feel just overall way better.

Yesterday in my juicer:
red bell pepper
bok choy
yellow squash
carrot
celery
belgian endive
apple

Smoothies are just another way to consume live foods and/or fruits. Any way you're eating enough of the  good stuff is fine. If you'd rather eat salads and soups and never touch a blender, that's fine. If you have several smoothies a day and never eat veggies or fruits in any other form, that's also OK (if boring.) If you mix it up, that's fine too.

With two toddlers in the house, it makes perfect sense that you have little time to eat properly, and find it easier to drink smoothies. You may find that your eating patterns change when they get bigger.

I find that smoothies sit rather heavy in my tummy.  It's probably because I don't really chew them like I should.  But it's been a long time since I've had one anyways.  

Juicing is cool, but it is also kind of a pain.  I personally would rather just eat the food itself.  But if a few times I've been stopped up in the past, some juiced carrots or some kind of compliant veggie with maybe a little bit of apple usually does the trick.
