Dr. D recommends not mixing meat and grains at a meal because it then becomes harder to digest in our low acid stomach.  

Anybody on here NOT adhere to this?  I've been pretty much adhering to this for a long time.  And I think it probably does help digestion.  But I've been struggling not to lose weight lately, and I wonder if that would help.  Probably not, as I'd probably just have a harder time digesting foods, but I'm wondering if any of you don't follow this and are any worse for the wear.  

Although if my GI system was working perfectly, it probably wouldn't phase me if I did mix the two.  But it's not, so.......  I heard Joe say he eats tuna on rice cakes at times and that kind of floored me.  There was a few times if I was real hungry I would eat some rice with my meal, but it's not very often.  

One thing is I'm not eating dairy, and I think it is not helping me in the keeping weight on area.  But when I eat it, it stops me up.  So......

Anyways...  Just wanted some thoughts from the peanut gallery on this issue.

I mix protein and carb all the time. Baguette or crackers with cheese. Brown rice with black or pinto beans. Bread with tuna salad. For me, I need the carb for volume, so I don't eat too much heavy protein at one time, when I've gone too long and am really hungry. So, okay, I can make a lettuce wrap with the tuna salad, but who even wants cheese without a baguette? I was rather dismayed at the concept of eating proteins and carbs seprately, but I'm making an effort to be more aware. I will be interested to know what others do as well.

Yes, Dr. D. (pg. 183 of The Genotype Diet book) says to try not combine starches and proteins, but not stress over it...  

I eat what I need to eat, when I need to eat it and not stress about it.  I am healing, which is far better than the many years of getting worse.  As long as I am moving forward, I am not really stressing about whether I could be healing faster.  I don't know that I could stand the pain of healing faster anyway...  

I have far more problem from activity provoking toxin removal causing slow digestion / elimination than food combination.  You may be different - and have to act accordingly.

Believe me Joe, I'm not saying it's bad to actually eat starches with proteins.  Well, meat protein.  I eat my starches with vegetable proteins all the time.  I have just not made the leap to meat based proteins.  I think there is probably some wisdom in what he's saying, but it's not everyone, every meal.  And I seem to be getting hungrier and hungrier.  So at some point I'll probably try it again.  Before this diet, I did it all the time of course.  Hamburgers, etc.  Now I don't think I would feel good at all eating a big ole hamburger on a big ole wheat bun.  Forget that.  

And Chrissy, I haven't had a "bagette" in forever.  Nor cheese.  So........  I don't eat bread at all.  Just rice and oats at this point.  I need to make some spelt muffins or something though.  That might help my cravings too.

I mix proteins and carbs all the time....An egg with amaranth flour to make pancakes in the AM...
brown rice with fish and veggies....I think when your gut is working right, it's just working right! :)

Some of my meals are vegan....but I could never eat a meal of just carbs....Even carbs and veggies
would leave me wanting protein.

The Zone Diet was based on a balance of 40-30-30.  I never had a problem doing that combined
with the BTD. (or now my SWAMI)  Keeps me feeling less hungry than if I just had protein and
veggies.  Or grains and veggies.

I think chewing slowly, not being stressed when you eat and not drinking lots of water to dilute
digestive juices when eating is helpful for good digestion.

Why would you want to dilute your digestive juices when eating?  That seems counterintuitive.  Now, I can tell that sipping tea HELPS my digestion.  I always drink tea after dinner, and it seems to really help.  AND I drink 2 liters of water a day and I know that it seems to AID in digestion, but drinking a bunch of water at meal time is not recommended, IMHO.  Dr.D has said it in one of his books, and I believe other people have said this.  The theory is it dilutes your enzymes in your stomach, making them less effective to break down your food.  And as I said before, I DO eat proteins with carbs.  Just not meat protein.  I eat nuts with my grains.   I'll eat meat with veggies and even fruit, but not with my grains yet.  I will eventually try it though.  It may just very well help me with gaining weight.  I don't know.  I just know my digestion has not been super great for a long time.  But it's getting better.

I'm guilty of eating turkey, chicken, and fish with rice. I have read about not mixing the two when your digestion needs help, and I should try to do that. I go through phases of doing it but not very consistent :)
I also like green tea with a meal and feel it helps digestion, as does papaya and pineapple.

Jjr= try eating fruit half hour before other foods, or two hours after.  See if digestion improves, for you, with this little change.

Oops.  I didn't see the "not"  heheheheheh!!!  She had it right.  

GeminiSue, the digestion isn't really the problem right now.  It's the opposite.  I'm ravenous, feel like I can't eat enough with my current habits.  And wondering if I should mix grains with meat.  But there's nothing wrong with your suggestion.

I'm also debating if I need dairy now.  I have avoided it for a while now, it had been stopping me up right quick.  I don't know if I want to find out or not.  We'll see.

I find as I get older, I have to food combine now. Might be my HH (hiatal hernia) problem.  But I digest meat much better with low carb vegetables like salad, greens. I eat turkey, fish and eggs..
