that the foods for Type A are doing me some good?

it's almost a month on this diet now and I've yet to feel any better, in fact I am more bloated than ever and I have gained weight  :-/

I still hate fish and tofu and have to psych myself up before I can eat them, plus I'm bored stupid with salads.

At the end of my rope almost.... :o

Why did you start this way of eating?

What are you eating?

Maybe you are a non secretor?

Might be good to look at a more individualized approach with the Genotype diet.


A's get bacterial over growth and need supplements when starting this way of eating.

Your symptoms sound like bacterial overgrowth.

If it is not working for you you can either try something else or move toward greater individuality.

Maybe you just need a more individualized approach.  Maybe even just food journaling would help to determine if something specific is causing the bloating.  Best of luck!

The type A diet did not do me much good until I did the nonsecretor variant.




I eat salads, but most of my greens are from smoothies.




It might help to know what you are eating.

I do not just eat fish, I eat turkey, ostrich.

dairy causes me problem so I do not do much of it.

I eat Tofu but lentils and pintos are better for me.

If you find tofu bland, use miso instead (or with).

If you have not tried silken tofu in a fruit smoothie, you should try that.

Most lettuces do not rate that well on the A diet, so you may want to try salads made out of things other than lettuce.

I also try not to neglect many of the cooked vegetables that rate higher than lettuce.

mainly compliant veggies,fruit, chicken and tofu with some brown rice. I have to trim the compliant list of veggies and fruits though as I have fructose malabsorbtion.

I did look into supplements but people here advised me not to start on those until I'd been on the diet for a while. I have been taking a probiotic, not that it's helped much though. I'm hoping my secretor test will shed some more light and help me to refine my diet a bit more


One other thing that occurred to me was that I have always bolted my food down for as long as I remember, I am trying to eat slowly but old habits die hard. Working on it though :)

Thanks for the link Brinkysail, the test came back with ER4YT, I'm hanging to find out what my secretor status is now, got a sneaky feeling I'm a nonnie!

One thing I have to watch out in my diet are seeds and nuts, last time I ate pumpkin seeds I had terrible IBS symptoms and almost passed out on the way to work  :o quite a blow as I adore them but I do better with peanuts and walnuts these days.

Dairy is very mucus forming for me so I avoid it most of the time, I do love cheese though but stick with feta when I crave it.

I can't eat lentils as they bloat me terribly. I'm down with green smoothies but have been stuck in a rut with ingredients lately, I will try the silken tofu though, that sounds like something that would go well in a smoothie.

I have bought some red miso paste but haven't used it yet as I was wary of the fact that it is fermented and I have had bloating issues with fermented stuff in
the past but I will try it and see if it's a problem for me.

Well I'm just going to have to get out of my food and recipe rut and find other things to eat. I found some interesting recipes today which are largely compliant and don't consist entirely of lettuce, one salad is quinoa based which I quite like.

It is possible that I am still detoxing etc. but it could be that my secretor status, once I know it, will be the answer to success with this diet.

One thing that really helps with bloating (air) when eating legumes (lentils, pinto beans, etc.) is to have some ginger cooked with them.  You may try including some ginger (root, spice or tea) with every meal for a week or so to see if that helps...

Hi,  :)
I can help with the bugs... how's your vitamin D level?  They should be above 50.  If you have low vitamin D, you're immunity will be very bad. Also, I recommend, elderberry to prevent cold, flu and pneumonia infection. Either as a tea or you can buy Sambucal Syrup at the Health Food Store anywhere, Here they sell Proberry Caps.. (I love those) and the Syrup form which is wonderful made into a hot drink. It's a start anyway, while  you're detoxing.  BTW, I hate fish  :X (unless it's battered in wheat and deep fried.  I gave up gluten recently and feel incredibly better! )

Are you 100% sure that you're an A? If you're an AB or an O, it's unlikely that the A foods are doing you any good.

If that's not the problem, you could give GTD (genotype diet) or the A non-secretor diet a try. You don't have to pay for a secretor test and wait for results- you could just try the non-secretor diet and see if you do well on it.

Ruth is right--you have nothing to lose by just trying it for a while anyway.

I was going to suggest dairy.  Or gluten-containing grains.

You may need probiotics and a digestive enzyme.

When I added ghee into my diet, after being dairy-free for ten years, I was able to digest foods better.

I've recently found that sprouting beans before I cook them helps with the gas/bloating.  I'm going to experiment with it some more before I start a thread about it, though.  I read it on a blog and was excited to try it.  I sprout lentils and eat them by the handfuls.  They taste like dirt, but hey--they give me a lot of energy so it's worth it!

When I was a vegetarian I guess I ate like an A......I loved rice with a nice sauce of tahini with tamari and water to thin it down and some tofu cubes sauteed in evoo with tamari. Garlic and ginger go well with these dishes, a squeeze of lemon, pinch of cayenne (if you can eat it) and a side of steamed veggies dressed in the same dressing (tahini) or could make a peanut sauce! Mmmm. :)

There's the rub. I have made an appointment to donate blood so I can get typed there. I will have a good laugh if I'm not an A, but 2 eldon card tests suggest that I am an A. My appointment is on the 28th of October, so watch this space!

At the moment I'm enjoying fresh blueberries and strawberries. I also eat apples and occasionally a banana. I tend to eat fruit mid morning onwards but I don't eat fruit every day.

I can be prone to thrush but I'm not having any of the usual symptoms and at one stage my doctor thought I might have IBS until a specialist diagnosed fructose malabsorption. I can't drink any fruit or veggie juices because of it even though I love fresh juice :( I've also had my gallbladder removed and had hepatitis in my 20's. At the time I was diagnosed as having Non A/Non B hepatitis as my symptoms weren't typical of any of those types of hep. My specialist thought it might have been hep B as I was really sick with it and my doctor thought it may have been hep C but I have no evidence of infection and I'm not a carrier so who knows? All the major illnesses in my life have been digestive. I also had a ruptured appendix in my teens and ended up with peritonitis.

I don't know what my vit D level is but I do take vit D supps every now and then as I have very fair skin and can't be exposed to the sun for long without burning. I've been thinking about Elderberry recently too, if I can get some tea I'll try it :)

I'm going back to smoothies for breakfast and ditching the coffee for now and I bought some turkey steaks tonight, turkey always agrees with me so if it doesn't this time I'll be surprised.

Well if I don't improve within the next couple of weeks I'll give the Genotype diet a go, I have nothing to lose by trying it :)
