Hi,

I've been following my Swami fairly strictly for a little over a month, less strictly before that.  I also have taken Polyflora O, Deflect O, ARA 6, and Intrinsa, found out I should avoid bladderwrack and chicory, so I switched to Gastro-D, instrinsa and ARA 6.  I was doing this with an eye toward "fighting the bad stuff first", then moving into something else, most likely the Hunter supps.

Well, about halfway into my 1st bottle of Gastro D, I am noticing improvements in the intestinal tract, but I have also developed an amazing amount of heartburn/reflux.  This is something that has never been a problem for me, except when I was pregnant.  I did find out that Gastro-D contains Mastic Gum, a black dot for me, so I have stopped it, but I still have the heartburn/reflux.

I am now taking some DGL alone which seems to help a bit and ginger tea.  I don't know if I could have stirred something up that is detoxing or a problem that was masked, but I do know that in all my years of coffee drinking and consuming other irritants I have never had this problem.  I am eating a lot of onions (diamond) which I read could be an issue, thought I might lay off them for a bit.

For more background, I have had IBS for years, and have hypothyroidsm, but my meds are on the process of being lowered.  I have had hyper-symptoms for at least 6 months, although they are getting better.  I started a gluten-free diet shortly before that.

I really had high hopes beginning this and I do enjoy the diet, really don't feel deprived, and am seeing some improvement as well.  I did not expect something new to crop up that has never been an issue in the past.  Please help!

just to check you changed from polyflora O, now you get heart burn, well the obvious thing is to go back to the original plan, gastro D can affect me in that way - but the detox affect may be the problem.

I would be fairly sure that black dots shouldn't apply to the basic supps like polyfora, vite and phytocal.

polyflora is a very important supp i think the most important one of all.

When you changed your diet, did you start eating something you wouldn't have eaten before? Have you ruled out food allergy to a particular food/ foods?

Once you start to eat for your type you'll get more sensitive to foods that are really avoids for you, even though you used to eat them just fine.

Can you take slippery elm? It 'greases' all skin right along your digestive path, starting in your mouth. Best taken last thing at night, I believe and you need to drink more when taking it.

Good luck, hope you get to the bottom of this soon!

Like you, Mastic Gum is a black dot for me but I think the small amount of it in Gastro-D wouldn't negate the benefits or be the primary culprit for your heartburn. In fact, when I started this diet, I had serious heartburn and the Gastro-D did it for me, along with Polyflora, Intrinsia, Polyvite, etc.

Are you eating enough grass-fed or organic beef as well as some ghee? I found that these really helped settle my stomach. A lot of green beneficial veggies should also be part of the "game plan."

You've been on BTD for only about a month. Your heartburn could also be a part of the detox process. Try to stick with your original plan a little longer and don't shy away from the beneficial goodies  ;D

Thanks so much for your replies!

So looks like the consensus would be to stick it out, maybe add back in the Polyflora and Deflect, despite the avoids.  I was considering going back on Gastro-D when this resolves, perhaps at a lower dose.  I am a rather petite woman and I was taking 4/day.

I am also going to an energy healer on Friday, we'll see what she says.

There are a few new things in my diet that I have not consumed much before, like green tea, yerba mate, but most things I have had in the past, just not as often as I am now.  I really have been working to get the 6 cups of veggies in, and I do try to get the cleanest sources of meat.  have a quarter beef on order that I know is grass fed and finished, not so sure about the stuff I am getting now, although they claim it is.  I actually get a lot more fish than beef on my Swami, so have been working to up that.  Things I have eliminated that were staples include dairy (I do eat parmesan), coffee, stevia, white wine (cave on this occasionally still), gluten-free breads and stuff like that.  Greatly reduced sugar.  Try to include more diamond/superfood fruits and nuts.  I use ghee, coconut oil, olive oil and butter.

I have taken slippery elm before, but am out now.  Maybe I will try to pick some of that up.  Are we talking capsule or tea?

I don't understand though why I would have things like mastic gum, bladderwrack and chicory as avoids/black dots when they seem to be so important to O's.  I mean it's not like I would ever consume these things if they were not in a pill.  Ok, maybe chicory.  So there must be reason they are listed on my Swami as such.

Any additional feedback welcome!

Spazcat - I see you posted on a thread title : "geno book diet vs swami" that I started. At one point in June I got concerned about the deflect O because by then I had done SWAMI and was now Explorer and not Gatherer. My printout had bladderwrack as an toxin also. I then contacted NAP and was told it was a bug and they were aware of it and that it was indeed a SUPERFOOD for me. Then is September, Bob from NAP said that it was not a bug, etc...

I wish Dr. D'Adamo would chime in on this one, because before the Sept. post I bought more Deflect O and the fucus from NAP. If this is the case, then there is no DEFLECT for us! It does not make sense that O's can't use the Deflect O because of the bladderwrack.

S.O.S. please. ??)

Yeah, Dianne I saw that post.  It was mentioned that iodine could put bladderwrack in the toxin column and I assumed since checked off thyroid issues, it had something to do with that.  I do get some seaweed like dulse and wakame, but do they have the same effect as bladderwrack?  Aren't they high in iodine too??

Is coconut oil on your swami? if it's neutral i would avoid it.

No, it's a superfood.  I was very happy about that!

Spazcat, I'm also petite and I took only 1 Gastro-D a day when I started, and it took care of the heartburn issue along with the other stuff I mentioned. So you might want to reduce the amount and see if it still helps.
