I had to post a message on giving up gluten again.  It's been really hard for me to give it up..denial.
I had a stomach ache for months (years?) and nothing was working.  I gave up gluten and now my stomach feels normal again!  :) Anyone else have this problem?  I can drink coffee again! I bet I can have a glass of wine..I have to buy it though.  Everything I was eating, even fruit was burning my stomach and causing, burping, acid reflux, pain, indigestion, acid indigestion..all the time it was gluten. duh.

Oh yeah . . .!!

Even though I test negative for Celiac, gluten ruins my health.  Like you, it makes it hard for me to digest other foods too.  Much, Much, Much better without it!! (dizzy)

Glad that you've find the solution Mayflower.

I can eat a breadcrumb and it messes me up for about 5 days-mood, energy, digestive discomfort and pain, (feels like something is sticking to my insides), BMs and weight gain. I sort of wonder if that's just extreme gluten intolerance or even normal for an O? Or if I could have celiacs? How do you know if you have it? Other than eating wheat for a while and then getting tested-which there is no way I would put myself through. In the past I ruled out celiacs because wheat made me gain weight-rather than lose it. Is that a reliable marker though?

I was tested negative for gluten intolerance in blood work. Enterolab tested me positive. I'm still not sure about that lab. I had a cheek swab to test for the celiac gene and I have the celiac gene plus a gluten intolerance gene.  I was however tested positive for grass allergy.  Wheat and other grains are grasses. My reaction might be an allergic one and not the celiac gene turning on. More likely following the A diet is working.. but I didn't go on it until 2008 and I'm 55 years old now.

the same for me.... but coz of nearly no time to be 100% compliant.. I'm forced to cheat sometimes and then get the beautiful stomach aches....  :P but no wine nor café for me....coz both make me hyper and can even lead to panic attacks....which is really very bäää :P(hand)(shrug)(mad)

I am positive that I have read you can also suffer from weight gain from being allergic to gluten ::) It can also be what causes skin break outs...

Hello.......
this is what brought me to ER4YT!
I had huge, serious sinus/mucous/asthma issues and could not breathe through my nose...at all!! :(
After seeing an ND and being tested for food allergies, found out I have a gluten, wheat, and cow dairy sensitivity. I went 3 months without these foods and weight just fell off! (I was a 2 pieces of organic wheat toast every morning person)
My sinus issues got better but I still needed surgery to remove polyps so I could actually use my nose! Sadly, though, my senses of taste and smell are sporadic. :P
Its ok...I can breathe!!! :D
Now, my ENT is testing me for environmental allergies....and we know grasses, mold, dust are going to be among them!
So, Mayflowers, I do enjoy coffee and red wine sometimes...no problem! ;)

Most likely because I'm an Ao.  I have the O recessive gene.  :)

My 20-year-old daughter is gluten/lactose intolerant.  She's had to go through a lot of diet changes over the years.  It was really difficult for her at first, and it makes going out to eat as a family frustrating, because we can only eat in restaurants that have a GF menu.

I remember reading somewhere that it was thought that over 40% of the population has a sensitivity to gluten, but most people don't even know it.  They suffer from intestinal distress and are clueless that it could be the gluten that is the problem.

I seriously just wish that whole wheat and gluten would just be eliminated from all products.  Seriously, has either benefited anyone?

I never knew I had problems with gluten and other things until I gave them up on blood type diet, and all my seemingly unrelated issues cleared up.  I just never knew that my symptoms were diet related - no doctor ever suggested it to me, and I'd been to see doctors for seasonal allergies, respiratory infections, migraine headache, and some kind of "bug" that would recur.  I could never be diagnosed with anything but seasonal allergies and maybe they all thought I was a hypochondriac because they could never find anything really wrong with me.  I never had a fever, but they always threw antibiotics at me for "infections".  I'm so glad to have found blood type diet because I think it would have become progressively worse.  I found BTD in the nick of time (I hope).

O in V.  I had a very similar experience.  I started BTD because of ulcerative colitis but I had spent my whole life with stomachaches and I used to joke that if someone was driving down the interstate with a bug, I'd catch it.  I was always sick...I grew up with an A mom who made me drink 3 BIG glasses of milk everyday.  I was a mess!  
Cutting out cow's milk dairy and wheat was a huge help.  The past year or so I've stopped eating gluten and I've noticed the difference.  I've never been tested for celiac but at this point I'm not willing to eat it for weeks just to have the test.

Me neither!  I've already experienced what happens when I 'cheat' in this regard.  Wheat is not worth it.  I've learned that lesson but well.   :-/

I can't understand why the blood test for gluten intolerance came back negative, yet, wheat gives me a stomach ache and other symptoms?   :-/

I was told by a doctor the blood tests for gluten doesn't always work.  There has to be enough of a reaction which is happening in the intestines that it reaches the blood. Enterolab tests stools for gluten so it's more sensitive than the blood tests.

False negatives happen all the time.  I'm glad you figured out what the problem is!  Even you fail the test, you know you have an issue with gluten.  What a relief to have answers!  Enjoy the coffee.   :)

That's right Ribbit, at least I can have my coffee :)   I read that article Andrea posted and I'm not a non secretor but one of my symptoms is iron deficiency anemia, so I'm going to keep an eye out on my levels to see if they come up not eating gluten.  My oldest son has iron absorption trouble. I'm thinking he has the gluten intolerance gene from me.

I was told the same info Lin when I had Enterolab do my tests. I'm also intolerant to soy, eggs and dairy according to them.  Doesn't leave much left to eat for an A  :(

Mayflowers- you may have an allergy to wheat in particular, not to gluten in general. For example, as an O nonnie I can't have wheat, spelt, oats, or barley, but I can have rye (though it's a black dot on my SWAMI.) If I had celiac disease, I wouldn't be able to eat rye at all.

If you can't have soy, eggs, or dairy, that still leaves you with poultry, nuts, beans (other than soy), veggies, fruits, and grains!

Like O in Virginia, I learned very quickly without the science of a lab that wheat nor gluten (intolerant to millet and barley also) has any place in my body! ;) :P

When my ND had me take the blood test we already knew and it was confirmed.

I am Ao also, Mayflowers.

I get a stomach ache shortly after eating wheat/gluten. Then my sinus cavities get stuffy, I get mucousy and start coughing. Yeah, not worth it! :-/

I tested positive for an allergy to 'grass' .  All grains are grasses. I get a little indigestion even if I eat rice, and other non gluten grains. My mother told me the doctor told her I was born like 95% allergic to everything.  ;D  I'm also having dairy problems. Not that I have a lot of dairy but, I get congestion and my ears clog up.. Maybe it's the weather?  :-/  

I've been a lot better off gluten. My memory is coming back.  :)

I had some white lines too. Not as many as some O's here posted but I had a few white lines.

Wheat gluten is an ugly animal.
That ear thing is weird, huh? I actually hear my inner ears squeak when I blow my nose
then sometimes get a strong dizzy feeling that pushes my body from one side to the other...really bizarre....It takes about 2 minutes of slow breathing , eyes closed, until it stops. Could it be a symptom of vertigo?  ??)

I have stopped eating wheat products and most dairy for 2 1/2 weeks with 4 lb. wt. loss almost immediately and stomach upsets seemed to disappear. I also lost a lot of the bloat that I'd been carrying around.

A few days ago, I added Ezekial spelt bread, 1 slice toasted with breakfast. Now, I've got a new skin issue - itchy bumps and rash-like symptoms, mostly on my upper body. I'm wondering if this is simply the toxins working out through my skin.

Is this something anyone else has experienced with the BTD diet?

Probably your sinus. If it clogs your ears, then you can get dizziness. I would get dizziness when I had a sinus infection. I also have a ear wax problem.. It could be that.

Try the Exekial Sprouted Wheat English Muffins. They don't have the added wheat gluten. They are so good.

Also I see more and more products that are gluten free.... I wish there were more products milk free too.

The vast majority of commercially available "gluten free" products contain avoids, such as xanthan gum, corn starch, potato flour, carageenan, etc. I've found a few simple crackers that were safe, but the breads all seem to have added junk for texture.

LindaH- it sounds to me like your body is detoxing through the skin. That can be a "good thing" when it means you're healing from old traumas (especially if health issues with internal organs have shifted "out" to skin problems). But it can also indicate that a new toxin is being ingested, causing the need to detox. Since the rash co-incided with a new food, that's the most likely culprit.

Mayflowers...you were right. my ENT said I blew my nose too hard and it affected my inner ear!

On the gluten note,
I had one piece of  delicious (Italian family made) regular cheese pizza ( it was a mini celebration at an old hangout with family and friends and I caved to temptation) and I think I have been paying for it ....about 4 days now....is that possible?
First i knew the cheese was going to attack within hours and it did.... :P
But next the gluten...actually along with the cheese.. :P :P
I cough with cheese and its over, but that gluten seems to attack , making everything I cough or blow or spit (sorry for the graphics) into a white glue, egg white substance that just keeps coming ..... :P >:( :-/
Anyone else experience this?
Also, recently, when I go outside, I cannot stop coughing... I will be starting environmental allergy testing in 3 weeks.  :-/

Before I went Gluten/Dairy free I was very mucus prone, colds would turn it very thick and disgusting.  I was like that for years and it kept getting worse and worse  It was like a miracle after going gluten/dairy free, don't get this now.
Not sure if this is similar to what you experience.

I used Enterolab also, and was told Gluten/Dairy/Yeast/Egg sensitive.  But their recommendations mostly emphasized removing the gluten and that it might help to remove other foods which I did for a while.  I did the swab gene test with them and found I have two Gluten Sensitive genes. My daughter had one Celiac gene and one Gluten sensitive.  She seemed to be fine, but slowly over the years she tested gluten free diet out and discovered when she was away from home and eating gluten she would put 5 lbs on in a week. She notices when she eats gluten her fingers get stiff and she gets a headache.  So I think Enterolab are good. She was spared years of unknown torture through my experience.

I had yet another cheat - pumpkin spice latte - the other night and no reaction - at all. This is my first cheat without having gluten. I am not going back to gluten ever, even for cheats. I thought the milk would have done me in but so far, so good and this was two days ago. It will be an occasional treat but not a regular I promised myself. And yeah, my fingers have more lines than my face does, another indicator to keep away from gluten.

:) I get small coughing fits.. It feels like pollen in my throat. I think it's seasonal allergies. I also get itchy all over from seasonal allergies. Right now it's ragweed season.  Dairy doesn't help.

Usually with me, one cheat  one day and I'm ok once in awhile..pop some Deflect and hope for the best. But if I start having an avoid more than one day ...like two or three days in a row, I have a reaction.

Our tests look pretty close according to Enterolab, I'm soy intolerant as well. So what do I do?  A's are supposed to eat soy. I'm intolerant? I've been still eating it, but not sure if I should keep eating it.  :-/  This week I had more dairy and I'm kind of more tired. that's really good about your daughter. She's saved herself a lot of grief. Gluten gives such weird symptoms that you think is something else and it turns out to be gluten!  I thought I had an ulcer because wine and coffee were burning so bad I couldn't drink them. Then when I stopped gluten, I can have my coffee and weekly wine again!

I am just going to have to go completely gluten/dairy free!!! I am pretty much gluten free and am cow dairy free. I just eat sheep cheese on my swami.

Yes, this feels like my seasonal allergies...and yes it is disgusting and frustrating!
Pollen in the throat is a good description, Mayflowers!

Lin, I hope I have good results like you did because our situation seems the same.

Thanks for the info Lin.  I was dairy free, then I got a UTI and I just temporarily went back on dairy to help put back the probiotics I killed with the Rx. I'm taking Polyflora as well.  I'm eating less and less dairy. I feel stuffy and I feel more tired on it. I'll be off by Monday. At the store opening Saturday, I bought an extra bottle of Polyflora so I can use more.  My two favorite things from NAP is Delfect and Polyflora. I also like the protein powder. Sunday I made a shake for lunch and I wasn't hungry all afternoon until dinner.  :)

There are some vegan, gluten free cookbooks out there that I'd like to get.

I have the Delfect and Polyflora also.
If you are reacting to soy perhaps best to take a brea while you are healing. Best to focus on the beans that you are okay with.

I agree on the weird symptoms from gluten.  I've told my son about your stomach pain and thinking it was coffee as he had told me recently the same thing happens to him. He trys to minimize gluten as he is also sensitive to it, both kids are A blood group.  
You must be healing if you've been able to introduce the coffee again.

Cajun, when I eat dairy I become congested but then it's over.  When I eat wheat, I feel the effects for several days.  Immediately, I get a *rush* feeling, a jitteriness, plus itchy sneezy sinus reaction.  Later, I feel it in my stomach, indigestion, just don't feel right, weight gain, makes me bloated, gives me the "runs".  My body cannot wait to get rid of it.  But the effects last for a couple of days.  That is not the case with dairy.  I can get away with a very small amount of dairy and not suffer too much.  I get very little dairy on my swami, but I think I can handle a wee bit, although it makse me gain weight very easily, and it comes off soooo slowly!

If you know what pollen you are reacting to you can google and find what foods cross react with that pollen and see if there is something else that triggers how you are feeling.

My doctor thinks there is a chance that I may be able to have any food other than gluten and dairy again once my gut is healed. Seemingly I have leaky gut and my immune system now reacts to pretty much everything.
I should change my signature, since I did that I was tested for more foods and had antibodies to almost everything. These are not true food sensitivities, but a sign that my immune system is overloaded and confused.
I was diagnosed Celiac in December and was told that gluten and casein both need to be avoided for life.
I always say that I'm non-symptomatic because I do not have any immediate , violent reactions.
Like Lin's daughter I gain weight when I eat gluten and dairy containing food (the old wisdom is that Celiacs start as children who will not thrive and all their lives can't gain weight...) I also get the stiff, painful fingers.
A couple weeks ago I decided to have eggs and yeast again. It makes life much easier. It means I can have gluten free bread again. Yay.
Gluten free is fairly easy, gluten and dairy free is doable and I need to get my act together and finally really stick to it  :-/

I have been catching up on the BTD boards after being away from it for a while and the gluten intolerance threads always are the ones I read first because I have 2 genes for gluten intolerance (Enterolab).

I am finding it so interesting and you may too.  It is written as a weight loss book but it is full of great information on wheat's effects on the belly, weight, diabetes, body pH, wrinkles, blood lipids, heart disease, brain skin.  Dr. D has already given us much of this info, but if you are like me and like to read more on the subject, I recommend this book.

Thank you, all, for your great input and comments. I met with a local naturopath and she agrees about the sprouted bread and skin connection. She is currently detoxing me. I found a great cream that really works to stop the itching - in case anyone else has this problem: DermaE's Tea Tree and E Antiseptic Cream. Instant relief and lasts for hours! Getting better through better health!!!!!

Getting away from gluten is one of my big achievements of the year...... though I think there is some gluten in oats also.   :-/  I feel ok on my one bowl of oatmeal a week.  It's such a relief to be off wheat.

American grown/processed oats are likely cross-contaminated with gluten. If the package doesn't say "gluten-free" it's probably not.
Gluten cross-contamination in numerous foods is a big issue for people who need to eliminate it 100%
If you feel fine with the oats you consume, you may either not be sensitive to trace amounts or your oats are in fact not contaminated.

O in Virginia...I hear you.. some of my symptoms are similar. Yes, I can get away with a little non-compliant dairy once in a while and suffer a little...but the wheat/gluten is another story! :P

I just had to buy GF Oats by Bob's because the Quaker was causing 'burning' in my stomach. These are much better. I'll have to see if I can tolerate oats in the long term or not.

Also another perk from going GF that I just realized was that my nightmares have stopped.
Lately. I was getting them more and more often.  Since going GF, no more nightmares! My dreams are happy again!

Highly sensitive to gluten (probably have celiac disease - do not want to biopsy.)

I was able to eliminate proton-pump inhibitors by simply eliminating gluten. Amazing. I also cut out wine for about a month and just drank beer (I now drink it) and followed the Nomad diet and exercise plan.

I also realized two weeks ago that gluten/corn is what triggers my environmental allergies. After consuming a sizable portion of wheat and corn, my allergies were on high alert and the symptoms lasted for four days (this was after elimination for about a month - serious elimination - no cheating at all.)

I remember telling my PCP when I was 21 that bread and water gave me heartburn. He looked at me like I was nuts and gave me the GERD diet - and on it was toast - made from wheat bread! Ha!

I noticed weight really staying on once I started eating whole wheat products. And my GERD was horrid. This, coupled with the 7800 feet elevation I was living in was a recipe for disaster. The only good thing was, no allergies - because dust mites don't live/exist above 5000 feet.

I am new to this forum, so feeling my way around. I have only been following the btd for approx 4-5 months and have just read genotype diet.  I started the btd because i had serious relfux probs. Could't even lye down, so would be sitting propped up with lots of pillows all night. I felt like i would choke if i layed down. When i read eat right 4 your type i was blown away. I react the most with wheat, where if i have just the smallest amount, i suffer for at least 3 nights, almost no sleep, and then a whole week before i feel no burning and lumps   :'(  I also react to the other avoids like vinigar but that isn't as severe, it will upset my system for just one night. So if I'm really strict, i am these days managing it better, I fear eating out though, and now with xmas  ??) I am so sensitive to a lot of the avoid that it's going to be very hard.  I'm now confused, do i stick with the btd or try Genotype. I worked out I'm gatherer, but a friend told me she knew someone who thought she was and found out later down track that she did measurements etc wrong   :o  Has anyone on here moved across to genotype and found it better ? Welcome - can you get another person to do the measurements to be certain?
Incidentally some of us can be in between two genotypes so it is a process & we are all individuals, so definitely no one size fits all... ;)

Thanks for that possum.  Yes my 12 yr old son helped me with measurements so i will perhaps go over it again. Also bit unsure if i measured correctly from ankle to knee and knee to thigh area  Where can i find the most updated info on the genotype, I thought Dr D said in his book there is no inbetween genotypes  ??) There are people that still just stick with the btd from what i can gather.  very confused though, as if i am a gatherer, there are foods that i can now have that on the btd say don't have due to the lectin damage to your cells?? Perhaps for now I'll just work on keeping my flare ups of reflux to zero  ;D

I would say that working on keeping flare ups of reflux to zero would be a major achievement & I'd certainly stay with the BTD for now if it is achieving  some results for you... ;) Cheese (most dairy) & wheat seem to be a couple of the major contender there...

In my opinion, it would be better for you to attempt something new after the holidays.  Since you are relatively practiced with BTD, stick with that through the holiday period, although you can verify measurements, etc.

You can also take the quiz to determine which diet is best for you to make a determination whether you should switch or not.

As ABJoe said, the blend of two genotypes 'appears' to happen when a person takes advantage of the extremely personalized diet and lifestyle program called SWAMI.  Many people find that their food lists are sort of a blend of both BTD and Genotype diet, with some influences of another genotype appearing.

Havn't been on computer since monday so a belated thankyou Possum, ABJoe and Victoria for your help, and I have decided for now the btd over the festive season is the best way to go.  Especially as at the moment i've had to virtually go back to eating mainly soups (which i know my favourites from Dr J's btd cookbook  :D ) and more baby type food   :-/ as i'm experiencing a dreadful flareup of reflux. Have had an awful week with reflux brought on by letting my guard down at party drinking few glasses champaigne, then someone made me a coctail and since then I've well and truly paid the price. Does anyone else get really bad reflux where it feels like somethings stuck in your esophegus, stomach on fire, waves of discomfort moving right into neck and even nose and face especially when you lye down. Most of this week I've had to sit up all night and try to get some sleep like that  :'( I feel like I've taken myself back to where i first started when i found the btd  :'( Certainly not worth it for one night of fun  ::)

Welcome Maz!

With the holidays coming up, I suggest you continue to stick with BTD until January. It's hard to stay compliant over the holidays, and it's a challenge to adjust to a new diet. I don't reccomend doing both at once! In January, you may want to invest in a SWAMI rather than following the "by the book" Genotype diet. If you're going to change your diet, you may as well change to something that's going to work for you! Some individuals (myself included) do better on BTD than GTD. My SWAMI is mostly BTD food values with a few GTD values thrown in. Some people have the opposite experience.

What's your blood type? I'm guessing you're etiher an O or a B since you measured out to be a Gatherer.

I usually eat before going to parties, so I can avoid eating altogether if there's nothing there I can eat safely. I usually limit my beverages to seltzer and water, although I would enjoy a glass (no more) of red wine if I'm not driving AND if there's enough "real food" I can eat along with it.

The " blending " happened to me with swami. The first run put me at an explorer, 40%. The second and third put me at teacher, 41%. My swami food lists are a real blend of blood type A, teacher and explorer. When I compare my explorer lists to my teacher lists there are many similarities as well as differences. ;)

Oh my goodness, that was me, before I found the BTD!!  Oh, the suffering -- tears would roll down my face, it would hurt so bad!

The good news is that the BTD is amazingly effective at banishing that torture!  (ok)  It's a thing of the past, for me.

I have tried to put my info on here but havn't played enough with it to find out how yet :-/ I did punch in some info and it would'nt accept it saying URL must be complete  :o Mmm I'm not very good with computers, i have no idea what that means ??)

If i behave myself and follow the btd, i actually am good, i'm still struggling with being good all the time  >:( Our life is pretty social here in oz, lot's of outdoor stuff, good food and wine/beer so it's so hard when we go out, I'm sure all our friends think I've gone all weird  :-/ and eating out having to scutenize (sorry about poor spelling).  I go well for a while then feel so good and feel like my normal self that used to pretty much be able to eat/drink what i like with what i call minor symtoms like bloating and gas  :o I recon I've done pretty well to get to 53 before having to start to behave  :P My husband is finding it a bit inconvenient that I'm having to adjust my lifestyle, wants me to go to the dr's and get tablets to fix me up so i'm not so boring  ::) I'm sure others have/are experiencing this with family and friends????

Food, mealtime, eating out, buffets, parties -- all these are at the heart of socializing.  Some of our friends and families have a hard time with our choices when we begin to look at food as something that brings us health or illness.  Where's the fun in that?  ;)

After all is said and done, you have to live inside your own body and no one knows it like you do.   :K)

You can still drink red wine, although O's shouldn't drink beer. If they're offering wine AND beer at some of these social settings, then you can gladly accept a glass of wine and socialize. You can also drink seltzer and/or water (with or without a twist of lemon or lime added) if they're offering sodas (or if you've had enough alcohol for the time being.)

Tell your husband to grow up. Why on earth would anybody "just take a pill" when they could heal their bodies with the right diet? Why would anybody intentionally ingest food that makes them need to take medicine? Does he  WANT you to spend your life on drugs?

I have experienced mixed feelings from friends and family. Most of them are supportive, however, those who believe in the almighty medicinal cure to support the pharmaceutical industry do not really understand it.

I became sick with allergies after eating a hotdog (no bun, no avoid meats, etc.) and some seasoned potato chips on Tuesday. There was nothing else for me to eat and I was starving (work function in a suite at a hockey game.) My allergies were awful the next day. I wanted to die. I know it was from the food. My mother said, "Well...that never happened to you before...just take an allergy pill." Haha. Well...of course it "happened to [me] before" - I had built up a little bit of tolerance AND was on allergy meds and all that good stuff.

Oh well. The point is - you have to do what is best for you. Those who want to join you on the journey to wellness can stick by you or not. YOU have to take care of yourself. Gluten sensitivity is nothing to mess around with. It can lead to all kinds of disorders.

And...I shudder to say this because I love food and drink so much and used to eat whole baguettes in college (hmmm...correlation with that and my allergy pill, steroid inhaler, asthma pill, albuterol, and steroid cream) everyday. I just love food. And while it is an adjustment, I find myself loving food that makes me feel well. It's a switch you have to turn that makes you decide to embrace it and choose wellness over gluttony (not saying you are a glutton) and do what is best for you.

Not to be a naysayer - be careful about wine...I have read that some of it can contain gluten because of contamination because the "traditional" method to ensure a leak proof seal on the head of the wine barrel is with unbleached flour paste. Some wineries do not do this. If you are very sensitive - this may not be good for you.
