Dr. D'Adamo states on page 167 of LR4YT that blood type Os should focus not just on weight loss but also muscle gain; he says it is important to have a bioelectric impedence analysis done in order to monitor body fat %.  

Does anyone use a Tanita scale and if so, do you think it is accurate?

Really no one has a body fat scale?  Seems like it would be at the top of a blood type O shopping list.

I did have a body fat scale for awhile (until my dad dropped it and broke it :P) - really expensive ones might work better, but this one was really inaccurate and would give a different reading every single time I stepped on it even if it was several times within the same 60 seconds.  I've heard other people with body fat scales complain about the same thing.  The scales are picky; you're supposed to be properly hydrated and have a certain amount of moisture on your feet, etc.  I had a couple BIAs done at a DO's office, and the readings were different from the scale.  I'd say, if it's really important to you, do a lot of research and get a good accurate one or don't buy one at all.

I do not have one, however, I am interested in purchasing a scale ( does not have to be bodyfat) just to keep myself in check.

Does anyone have suggestions? Digital or not? Brand?

I had that bio-whatever thingie done for me at Andrea's house when she measured me for my SWAMI. I know my numbers have improved since last time, and it's not something I worry about on a day to day basis. I know that I need to lose about 25 lbs of fat, and maintain my current muscle mass. I don't need bigger muscles, just to strengthen the ones I already have.

I'm not even sure what my body fat % is or what my target body fat % is. I know that, as a Gatherer (and large-breasted) my "target body fat" is probably on the higher end of the healthy scale, but I don't know what the numbers are. I can tell from looking in the mirror, as well as how my clothes fit, whether or not I need to lose weight, and whether or not my weight loss efforts so far have been working. I do have a scale in my bathroom, but it's not very accurate, and I find the "look in the mirror naked" method to be more reliable.

Not an O, and don't track my body fat, but I do own a Tanita. I'm not sure how accurate it is, but if you use it you can at least track your progress...

I like digital scales over analog, personally. ;)

Does anyone know if BIA is more accurate than calipers?  I got caliper pinched a few years ago at the gym.

I have heard that measuring BMI % is most accurate done the hydro way (under water) and calipers are good for retesting / monitoring progress ie not 100% accurate but still good

My sister had to study this in school (sport and exercise science major); she was taught that hydro is more accurate than BIA and BIA is more accurate than calipers.  However, a really poor BIA machine can be less accurate than someone who is really good with calipers.

At work the owner has recently bought Tanita "scales" for all the stores...
I'm not sure how accurate they are, but even before we have actually started offering customers this service, the batteries have already run out in the scales at both stores where I work... ::)
Seems this is without any of us doing too much practice/training with them as some staff are even personally reluctant to get on them :-/ I believe they use power up very rapidly & only take a very tiny cell shaped battery...
Also not sure I like how it runs an electrical impulse through the body?! Is that safe? Would love to know other's opinions too...

The current in BIA is so small that it can't even be felt so when I compare that to people using electric stim for therapy it doesn't seem bad ??)  If I had the current running through me for long periods of time I would worry about it, but it only takes a couple seconds and it's not something I would do every day.  That's just my personal, uneducated view toward it.  I have heard that it should not be used for people with defibrillators - makes sense.

You can get a BIA done at the GNC at the mall.  I don't want to have to drive to the mall every time I want to check my body fat %.  The reason I started this thread is that I have read conflicting info as per which is more accurate, the BIA or caliper pinch.

My Tanita goes through a battery (9 volt) about once a year. It's fairly old (the scale),, so if the manufacturer changed batteries... :-/

The scale itself is pretty accurate. I weighed myself naked, then went to the doctor's office and they weighed me with clothes. The amount of clothing I had on was light weight (summer clothing), and the poundage was very close.

I regret not getting a Body impedance monitor.  Over the summer I have failed to loose weight, but have definitely gained muscle definition.  Since I still cannot do much exercise, I do not know what is going on.

Buying one now is not going to help me understand the past.

If you either expect (or hope) to increase (or improve) your muscle mass get a machine that will help you understand what is going on.

Bioelectrical Impedance - BIA accuracy within 3-6%. Calculation methods can vary as much as 10%
Conclusion:  BIA works well in healthy subjects with stable water and electrolytes balance and the appropriate equation with regard to age, sex and race. BIA can be used to follow body composition in persons with BMI 16-34, but must be interpreted with caution. Home bathroom scales that measure body fat (Tanita, Taylor) are not accurate for body fat, but can be used to monitor changes.
My impression is total submersion method is the best

I have been in the ideal BMI range almost all my life. At the most, sedentary lifestyle combined with high consumption of carbohydrates for a number of years have resulted in about 5-15 lb gains. A brief period of reduced carbohydrate quantity or reversing the protein to carbohydrate ratio melts it away. A few days of low carbs melts off a few pounds.

Dairy has been my primary protein almost all my life. When I was in my teens-20's I consumed whole milk and cheese and had massive sinus congestion issues. Later I started using 2% then skim milk and it improved with each step, but it also did continue to be a intermittent/seasonal minor issue. For many years I ate sharp cheddar and a lot of corn chips.. Whole wheat bread and Oat meal in any form I could find. Drank a lot of coffee sweetened with honey and softened with 1/2 & 1/2.

Then after reading E4YT years ago I switched to Mozzarella and Ezekial bread. Later, I alternated both mozzarella and cheddar with my corn chips. Throughout the decades, I ate a couple quarts of yogurt a week. In one week with no exercise no wheat, not yogurt, no cheese, no corn... and a satisfying amount of beef, I lost 2 lbs.
I am still in a ideal height to weight range though when I have been too long sedentary there has been a substitution of a little less muscle for a little more fat.
Not long before incorporating Hunter recommendations, I noticed it seemed like I was never hungry. I never got that growling in my stomach that I remember as a kid before lunch time. Well after even a few days eating hunter foods... my belly grumbles good... it says... Give me MEAT and vegies! haha

I bought a Tanita several years ago and use it weekly to post the data on my blog.  My % body fat is about 18.  I don't know if it's accurate.
