Howdy all,
I've been researching and trying to adhere to the diet recommendations for O. As of yet I still don't know the secretor part. Yes I'm a dietary vegan and have been for over 5 years, but I hope this can be overlooked by all. I'm new to these ideas about lectins and such, find them very interesting and wish to explore it more. I'm 57 years of age in good health +/- if anyone can completely know at any given time. I have been keeping well within the diet restrictions for over a week and if I've noticed anything it's the cuticles of my fingers. Women would die for them, well OK maybe that's a little over stating it, but they look great now and have for a few days now. I stomach seems to be less unsettled also. I have cut out almost all soy except for tempeh, occasionally. Soy as always given me much gas so I'm of the opinion it not me. Anyway I'm happy to be here and hope to learn much more, as I believe there is much validity in all of this.

Well yesterday was not a stellar day. I started off by making pancakes with tapioca, millet, and teff flours, cover with soy butter and the last of my agave syrup. Went to a burrito place where I had a vegetarian burrito no cheese and didn't eat the tortilla. Came home ate some more refried pintos with Daiya pepper jack cheese(vegan gluten free). Later on I mixed some black eyed peas with some sauteed peppers, onions and mushrooms, all mixed with some millet flour and deep fried balls of the mixture. Had some mixed salad greens,the ones you buy in the big plastic tub with a dressing of Vegannaise, (vegan mayonnaise)tomato sauce, sweet basil, thyme, turmeric, and salt  Snacked on some rice ice cream, blueberries. Drank carrot juice, grapefruit juice, mango juice.
I'll add if I can remember anything else.

I realize I ate a lot of legumes but I hadn't hardly had any in the last week as except for some tempeh. My cupboard wasn't filled with the beneficial type but mostly the avoid kind. Also I eat mostly fruit at work during the week so I'm not really turned on by it on my days off, such as today.

well if the items are compliant then by all means eat hardy.. as for your being vegan.. do it on your own risk.. whatever works .. actually you seem to be able to handle the flack you might be getting.. but so far you staved off any becasue you dealt with it without guilt up front.. so good luck..

Supposedly there is a section for vegan O's here - maybe Lola will point you in the right direction..

then again maybe you could introduce beef broth to begin with and get some of the benfits from it and accustom some taste.. HOW is your B 12?

I'm not here to engage in arguments about my veganism. It just ends up becoming a waste of everyone's time and leaves a bad taste in your mouth. :) I came here just to learn to eat right for my blood type as best I can.

I did have B12 and Calcium checked the other month. My B12 was >1000 and it should be >200. I was take subligual B12 the cyano type every couple of days, plus what ever foods are fortified an a multivitamin every couple of days also So I stop with the subligual B12  for a while as I have been made aware that high B12 could have some correlation to cancer.

Welcome Joe!

I'd reccomend that you get your secretor status tested ASAP, especially since your diet is already more limited than most. Many of the vegetable proteins are secretor-status specific. You don't want to consume beans that are an avoid for you (once you finish up what's already in your house anyway)  but you also don't want to limit your diet more than you have to.

All of us need plenty of vegetables, plus Os need to make sure we don't overdo the grains. Make sure you get plenty of protien from beans, nuts,  seeds, and leafy greens, as well as plenty of fat from nuts, seeds, and added fats such as olive oil.

Be wary of highly processed foods, such as the rice-based ice cream. Many ready-made "meat substitutes" and "dairy substitutes" are full of strange additive that aren't healthy, such as xanthan gum and carrageenan. If you want "milk" make your own almond milk from raw almonds. You can proably make your own ice cream from homemade almond milk, although I haven't personally tried it.

If I were to buy a package of ice cream for a special treat, I'd buy the coconut milk one over the Rice Dream. Yes, coconut is an avoid, but so are the additives in the Rice Dream, and I'd rather eat whole, unadulterated foods than processed garbage. I may buy one pint for my birthday (depending on my overall health by then.)

I'm following up on your suggestion and eating all those inedibles I've got in the cupboard, I do buy almond and rice milk all the time, and have made ice cream before from soymilk. I was going to buy the almond ice cream but the rice cream was 2 for 1 sale. Funny you mentioned it but I am of the opinion that I have a sensitivity to carrageenan. I do eat a lot of different veggies and greens. Right now I have sweet potatoes, beets and greens, turnips, peppers onions garlic, kale, celery, carrots, bananas, apples, peaches lemons, limes, ginger, pineapple, etc, in my pantry at the moment. So I will stock up on dries adzuki and black eyed peas as I like pressure cooking my legumes better than out of a can. I usually have a bag of frozen mixed vegetables but will have to rethink the corn part.

I'm just curious, how long have you been a vegan? And to answer question you had, yes, Steve went back to eating meat. And no, I'm not going to criticize you for your choice to be a vegan.

Actually some one steered me to a video that answered the question about Steve. :)
I've been a dietary vegan 5.25 years. If you choice to go hunting and fishing, that's your choice, I'm OK with you make your own choices.

I was a vegan for 5 years - I went off it last March 2010. I can honestly say I thought I was doing well on it until I began noticing ill effects the last year of my vegan diet. It has aged me much faster than I'd like to admit and my digestion was a total mess. I think I was in denial and it was just a phase I was going through so I just kept right along with it. Bad idea. Now I feel like a brand new person with the correct foods!

However...

With that being said, I wouldn't tell someone it is a bad idea to be vegan. Why? Because the human race is given free choice and there is a Higher Order that rules all of us in this Universe. Plus there is an infinite number of factors and variations that make all of us uniquely who we are. So in the end, we must do what we feel is right for us. Period.

But I still won't even consider eating lamb or veal though.   ::)

Thanks for bringing this up, i have a pressure cooker and never thought about doing beans in it!.  Though i'm still alittle leary about using it, i think it stems from my mom telling me she had one years ago and the lid blew off it when she was using it!.  :o

BTW,  We are a very open minded group of people here, not a "you do it my way or hit the highway" group of people!.  ;)

Actually I didn't come here with the intention of downing a bunch of meat. I am interested first in the lectin part and those foods that are know to have an effect on our absorption or dysfunction in our digestive system. I don't claim to know much nor do plan on just jumping in head first. I'm not fast on any thing so will try to absorb as much as I can in my own time. I am a letter carrier for the USPS. At 57 I never have a problem with lack of energy. The heat doesn't really bother me. I have good blood pressure, cholesterol, sugar and the such. I do have a family history of diabetes, and Alzheimer, with some cancer thrown in, Most in my family tree live forever and then occasionally one won't. I have a pretty good understanding of nutrition, at least better than the average Joe. I am pretty good at keeping enough beneficial foods in my diet prior to this web site. I was just unaware of certain foods and their possible reaction to some people. so it's onward and up ward. I have told several people of this website as in my circles I'm like the only vegan.

My pressure cooker instructions say not to cook beans in it, the skins come loose and can clog up the vent. I like cooking my beans in a slow cooker. Also, found some specialty salt one time at TJs. It is black, has charcoal in it I guess, I think it really helps keep the gas down on the beans!

Pressure cookers now a days aren't like grandma's. They have a couple of fail-safes on them. You do have to be present. And from what I'm reading more lectins can be broken up due to the higher heat, along those same lines it warns against slow cooking as the heat doesn't get high enough to destroy as many lectins. This is what I'm reading i can probably find the quotes and probably find quotes to the contrary. But it does make reasonable sense to me.

You should consider the NAP BT O Polyflora probiotic. Blood Type O people have trouble with bacterial adhesion to the intestines (bad bacteria trying to burrow) without meat digesting with a lack of problematic digestibles (most dairy, potatoes, and wheat). The probiotic will help.

If you take B12 try the Methyl B12. Consider it insurance of being Vegan. Unfortunately the cyanide version you take does not metabolize well - less than 1%. I would suspect most vegans that just drop dead out of no where, essentially have depleted B12.

What do great-looking cuticles look like?  One reason I ask is because I know a vegan who appears to have no cuticles whatsoever.

I'd also like to know what healthy looking cuticles look like?

I was told that when the skin close to the nail gets that frayed looked you are low on some nutrients.  And I've noticed the cuticle on my thumb nail seems to retreat a little and shows a bit of a half moon.  And then other times the half moon does not show.

Mind you now I have been doing yard work the last couple of days after work. I always had some hang nails, there is a little split in my pointer finger (not shown) and the little brown mark (line) under my index finger in not Splinter Hemorrhage from disease, but a few years ago I had smashed this finger so hard that I\'m surprise the finger nail ever grew back. This is the only finger this ever happens too. I don\'t work in an office my hands are exposed to the sunlight 5 days a week and I haven\'t put any lotion on my hands in weeks. I do put sunblock on but not on my fingers, as I use fingerless Solar Gloves to protect the back on my hands. This is the best I can remember them ever looking for such a protracted period of time.
