BTD Forums  /  Cook Right 4 Your Type  /  spirulina powder - hiding the taste

I really like the idea of spirulina powder, and it's a beneficial so I ordered some.  the company accidently sent me a little container and a huge container instead of just the little one I ordered (only charged me for the little one though :)) so I have a heck of a lot of it, but I can't stand the taste.  I did a search to try to find ideas for masking the flavor, but I didn't find anything.  I have fructmal so I can't put it in smoothies.  Any other ideas?  Some people sprinkle it over salads, but the taste is so strong that I don't know about that :-/

May need to make some adjustments for your diet.

>Spirulina beverage

Blend one tablespoon spirulina in 2 cups of your favorite vegetable juice. Can add some herbs to this mixture to improve flavor.

>Spirulina chips

2tsp paprika, 2tsp garlic, 2tbsp spirulina, 1tsp cumin, 1 tsp salt, 3tbsp water. Slice six parsnips into thin slices. Pre cook chips in microwave or oven. Put chips and all spices into a bag and shake, or just sprinkle spices over chips. Bake in oven at 350F until browned.

>Spirulina dip

2 avocados(some explorers may need to find a substitute for this), juice of 1 lemon, 2tsp garlic, 3tbsp spirulina, 1 onion, 2 tbsp chilli powder, salt. Blend until smooth.

Also you may want to use the Spirulina powder to fill empty capsules.

I thought about this too - if I can't find something else that works.

The chip idea sounds good, I'd have to use something besides parsnips...maybe yucca or malanga

The avocado dip sounds good too

Thanks :)

I put spirulina in a chocolate protein smoothie (usually includes rice protein, hemp protein, cocoa powder, flaxseed meal, soy milk and ice for blending). Not sure if this hides it perfectly, but it's chocolatey and fruit-less  :)

I've taken a different approach to a few of my superfood powders that I don't like the taste of.  I just mix them in a couple of inches of water in a small jar.  Tighten the lid and shake well, then chug-a-lug!  Then I add another couple inches of water, slosh and drink.  This whole time, I don't breathe through my nose.  It's the after-smell that will gettcha!  ;)  I'd rather just get it down and over with than to mess up a perfectly good bit of food trying to make it taste good. (hehe)

I might have to do that :)  That's what I do with my liquid magnesium - hold my nose, drink it, immediately brush my teeth ;)
