I've been away from this forum for a long time.  Something has happened that I feel is worthy enough to share, but you probably already know about it anyway, but what the heck.

On the Fourth of July, 2004, the day after I suffered a silent heart attack, which was diagnosed three months later, I heard about BTD.  Knowing I was sick, but not knowing from what I thought I'd give it a try.  I was probably tipping the scales at about 320.  I dropped 70 pounds and hit a plateau.  I remained on that plateau for a long time.

I arrived in Memphis on the Fourth of July, 2008, to care for my mother, who suffered a stroke.  She would pass away about three weeks later.  My father, long divorced from my mother, and living alone after the death of my step mother, invited me to live with him.  While I lived at my mother's home, Dad came by daily for meals.  He had purchased the GTD book and determined himself to be a teacher.  It was looking like I was also a teacher, makes sense, right?  Dad's one.  After a few weeks following a teacher diet, I realized something was very wrong.  I went online and and signed up for GTD through the diets online program, I forget the exact name, but remember it cost about $50.  I redid the testing and was totally shocked to find out I was a warrior.  Those teacher cheeses were doing me in.

Dad and I both bought SWAMI and low and behold, Dad turned out to be a warrior too.  He really hated giving up the cheese, but he did.  Everything was going fine.  Dad was slowly losing weight and was quite happy about it.  I was maintaining my plateau.   :-/

Dad received many newsletters from doctors that he paid for.  Something about paying for advice and not following it...  A couple of them insisted that in order to be healthy it was absolutely essential to eat lean, grass fed beef.  Dad would tell me about it and I would tell him "Dad, they're O's, of course they think it's good for everyone."

He finally wore me down over a period of several months if not a year.  I decided I would go to Whole Foods and if they had grass fed beef I would buy some, cook it and it would probably make me sick so then I could say "See, I told you so!"  It didn't happen.  It was delicious.  Dad was thrilled beef would be incorporated back into his diet.

About six months later, Dad came to me and said "I'm no happy.  I've gained 20 pounds."

I told him "Dad, it's the beef.  I've gained 25."  He agreed to remove beef from the diet.  Neither of us lost a single pound, however, and he passed away two months after the beef was removed.

It's been seven months since Dad passed away.  I'm totally over beef, I won't make that mistake again, but getting the weight off had been a frustrating, futile attempt.  I decided to drop turkey and go mostly vegetarian and managed a couple of weeks of that with zero results.  I was pretty tired of seeing 265 on the scales.  

My biggest problem with vegetarian diet is most of the restaurants and cookbooks rely heavily on nightshades and gluten laden foods.  It's hard to come up with enough recipes for a nice variety.

Now I'm trying mostly raw and have finally achieved some results.  This morning I weighed in at 258.  Progress finally!  I'm going to keep some cooked items in my diet, but will make sure that the bulk of it is raw.  I've got my eye on a nice juicer, but it will be a while before I can afford it.

My dad's home is being foreclosed on so I am forced to move.  I will be moving in with my cousin and her husband as they have a spare room.  We're all A's.  She's diabetic and he's gluten intolerant.  We could so get along!  I introduced my cousin to BTD and GTD in 2008, but she's not done anything about it.  She's suffering severe hair loss, and says her sugar levels are out of whack.  I took her fingerprints and showed her that she could stand to stay away from gluten.  I doubt if she will make that leap without tons of encouragement.  I haven't moved in yet, but I understand the routine is they both fend for themselves for meals.  How sad.  I got the impression it had much to do with his gluten intolerance.

This could be a very good thing for the three of us.

Sorry to hear of your Dad's passing...

Beef is really hard for the Warrior to digest and eliminate...  It may take more raw enzymes to enable the body to clean out...

Keep up with your lifestyle no matter whether anyone else in the house is willing to get on-board...  Who knows though, with you preparing tasty meals, they may all ride free...  Much success with your health.

Thank ABJoe.  I intend to do anything I can to help, and will strive hard not to backslide going forward.

Lola, I have SWAMI.  Just need to dust it off.  I have both mine and Dad's in a notebook.  I wished I would have dusted it off before I made my second trip to Whole Foods in two days.  There's a big difference between SWAMI and the GTD book.

I'm sorry your parents have passed away.  You were a good caretaker for each of them.  I hope the SWAMI does wonders for you.

I'm sorry to hear about your losses. I lost my father 8 days ago. We finally found out his blood type about 3 weeks before he died. Mom (who's interested in BTD but "not ready" to implement it fully) did switch over from buying chicken to buying turkey for him. It was too little ,too late. Who knows what could have happened if he'd been on BTD for the past 10 years, before he got so sick?

I haven't been able to eat well for the past week, but I'm slowly trying to get my diet (and my kids' diets) back on track. My 14yo daughter and I are both suffering from viruses, apparently picked up because our immune systems were weakened from too much ice cream and milk chocolate. Today my kids actually ate vegetables!  ;D

Good luck with the weight loss. Sometimes our bodies just get stuck at "set points" and it takes a whole lot of work to get past them. Sometimes you can tweak your diet or exercise routine, sometimes you need to add supplements (take a look at the threads on magnesium on this forum, in the "supp right for your type" board) and sometimes you just need to keep on doing what you've been doing for months before you finally see the most subtle of results.

Review the information you put into SWAMI. You may need to adjust some of the inputs to make the diet even better for you right now (as some things might have changed since you last ran it.) Make sure you're following the portion size and frequency recomendations. (my personal downfall.) Find healthy ways to manage stress, as cortisol can interfere with weight loss.

So sorry for your loss.  It must be difficult to focus on diet when you have so much turmoil in your life right now.  

When you are feeling up to it, dust off that SWAMI.  You have a great attitude and I hope things work out well for you.

Oh, and Tigress- I forgot to mention this in my earlier post. Go ahead and use the foods you've just purchased. If they're OK on the GTD "by the book" then they're not "super toxic" for you. They may not be the best, they may not help with weight loss, but those foods won't hurt you. Go ahead and use them up, then replace them with healthier fare when they're gone.

You don't need the added stress of "trying to do everything perfectly at once." Baby steps are fine.

Thank you ruthiegirl.  I'm very sorry for your loss.

I didn't buy anything bad, just could have bought more.  I have some green tea cooling down and my Vita Mix filled with greens for my morning drink.  I've added cold pressed hemp oil and flax seeds to spinach, alfalfa sprouts, cucumber and lemon juice.  All are in the "green" and mostly diamonds.  The hemp oil is a first for me.  I watched many You Tube videos yesterday on hemp oil and figure it's worth a try.

Thanks Patty.  Swami has found its way to my desk.  I just can't decide what I want to do with Dad's, which is in the same binder.
