Ok, so I decided to get a secretor/lewis test as a precursor to ordering Swami. The test kit arrived today so I plucked up my very limited courage and stabbed myself with the lancet... half an hour later I have a bruised finger, about 4 drops of blood and have almost fainted twice :B ::) :-/

I tried to get more blood, but it just wasn't happening so am sending the sample off anyway in the hopes there will be enough for them to work with. Anyone know what the minimum amount of blood needed for a result is?

I do not know how much is needed. But when I had Leis tested in the states they took a small vial. I do not remeber the precise size, but I think it would have been in the range of 3 to 5 ml.

Likely they do not need very much.

I know when I have tested for ABO blood types, I have missed and needed to use a second lancet to get enough blood from a person.

My daughter and I had blood drawn for the MNS phenotyping and the Lewis blood typing. They drew two vials. No big deal!

I had to send our blood to the American Red Cross, however, so make sure you research who can do the Lewis phenotyping before you go and have the blood drawn.

I like to put the hand/finger in some warm water then dry it off prior to lancing, . This has a chance of getting more blood to the area.

Sorry, I can't tell you how much is needed for the Lewis test.

Just the Lewis test, Lola, at this point in time - it seemed the mostlikely to affect the outcomes on Swami from what I've been reading on here.
The kit had all the instructions :) but said 10-15 drops of blood into the vial, and mine dried up after about 4 - it was tough just to get that out :-/. If the lab can't get a result I'll order another kit and see if the nurse at my GP surgery will draw the blood for me - I don't think it's normally the sort of thing they will do on the NHS but no harm in asking :)

This is very interesting. I wish I had known about these tests when I was in England in 2009. I am now trying to get this done in Canada. I wish it were as easy as ordering a test. ::)

I got my blood drawn for the Lewis test, by having an extra vial with me when a nurse was drawing a blood for some other tests. Before she started to draw the two vials for the blood tests that she was supposed to do, I handed her my extra vial and explained I needed a little blood for another test. I do not think I even told her what the other test was. Since she already had the needle in my arm it only took her another minute or something to draw the extra vial of blood.

I got my PCP to order mine. I explained to her about secretor status and she ordered the Lewis phenotyping along with the MN phenotyping. I had already done the saliva test kit but wanted a confirmation of those results.

Results are in (so my 4 drops was obviously enough ;)) and the answer is...drumroll... Secretor ;D

Not unexpected but nice to have it confirmed. I was going to wait until my one year anniversary of starting BTD to get Swami... but why wait? Swami here I come!
