Help!  I have been doing Bikram yoga for years on my own, but now there is a new Bikram studio in  my town... I have LOVED going to the classes and have been attending about  4 days a week.   In Bikram yoga, the studio is quite hot...  108 to be exact....
JUST since I have been going, I have started to have   a steady outbreak of a cold sore in my nose.  The cold sore first started back in college, but I rarely get it.  I my opinion, it is the heat that is causing the outbreak!  I really LOVE doing the yoga, but I am hating having this  lingering cold sore.  I have a prescription for Valtrex or Famvor which I could take to clear it up.  I did this , but it is back and lingering.  It's not full fledge, but it's red and  there.   I really do NOT want to take the medicine full time because I feel like that is unhealthy.
I did some research... I found that almonds are bad for cold sores... and I was eating a lot of them... so I have cut that out....I am taking lysine, which is a preventative... and putting this cream on my nostril , Abreva.....
I really want this to go away!!!   I have tea tree oil and lavender essential oils, but that isn't helping.... Abreva seems to help the most.... but I really want to clear this up...!!!

I would take several lysine capsules (500 mg ea) spread throughout the day, for a few days, then taper back down gradually to 3, then 2 then one a day as maintenance.  It worked for me and I'm now able to eat almonds every day again.

I like their Super Lysine Ointment put into a glass jar with a couple of licorice capsules emptied into the cream, mixed well.  Dr. D. recommends licorice topically.

Also the Super Immune Lysine Capsules has 500 mg lysine per cap, plus Olive Leaf and Astragalus.

I think you would benefit from taking Genoma Derma long-term even when there is no outbreak.

After saying all that, extreme heat might still give you a challenging time, but see what you can do with these ideas to get your body in balance again.  Good luck!  :)

My sister had what you;re describing, sherriberry...although it wasn't a cold sore, it was a staph infection and stemmed from an infection in a hair follicle in her nose..

Has anyone diagnosed you as having a cold sore?

If it's not going away, consider that it's possibly not a virus, but an infection.  And treatment
would be different.

How about trying something anti-microbial....grapefruit seed extract liquid mixed with warm
water on a Q tip...or Tea tree oil mixed with water, applied same way topically.  I'm even thinking something homeopathic like Traumeel cream too...

When a person does a lot of exercise, they need to take in a lot of antioxdants because the body is putting out a lot of free radicals from oxidative stress. In some way, this deep bug has been with you for a long while....so I kind of agree with Andrea that your system is trying to get rid of some inner
dysfunction and the high temperature plus lots of exercise has instructed your body to purge
toxins.

I wonder if Genoma Security would be helpful for you to take orally..  I love it....removes all those bacterial biofilms....

Another thought....if it's by any chance you've got a staph infection, Dr. D uses tomato goo topically.  If you
try it and it works, then you'll know it was staph.  If not, back to the drawing board...:)

extreme heat will be a problem, personally, I would try to avoid it if I had this virus. (which I do.)

Yes, I'm sure it is a cold sore... aka  herpes.... in my nose.   I have had this since I was 25.  It very rarely acts up, but when it does I do take the Valtrex or Famvoir....  can't remember which one.... but  this  is not like a regular  outbreak.... it's lingering.. I have been reading some Bikram yoga boards and some people have had the same experience... it's the heat..... I DO love it so  much, though!!
right now the area is just "holding it's own"... not terrible but not healed.  I am taking lysinne at 1000   one time at night....  is this good?   and no almonds...

This is hot news.. the issue with this conversation would never have been complete without your post Andrea!!!  THANKS!!!! from the bottom of my heart.

And here is why: I started having outbreaks down my sciatic nerve path after a vaccine. Supposedly not related,, -can't prove it by me-  supposedly had that virus maybe forever..

have had fewer blisters all my life, but they never hurt me...  for those I found that pantothenic acid works best, Following DrD's protocol of taking DrD's own better sups would be my preference, taking 500mg for a bottle, then go to 300mg for a month and then 100 for a while or for-ever.. /I would also eat foods containing the same..

UT the missing piece for my leg was the need for the topical application.. after the outbreak down the back of my leg a year ago I decided to go on low dose valtrex for a year, I am soon finished.. During those month I had 2 more outbreaks starting and so I used zovirax also IMMEDIATLY as I now no longer 'think' it to be a sciatic nerve pinch needing a chiro adjustment.. a get 7-10 days notice before the blister break out... zovrax seems to help..

The issue I have with my valtrex, it's expensive and after I was on it 6 month another doctor told me that herpes will never go away, just become dormant, and that  the valtrex should be taken to prevent it in the event of it going to the brain..

Yet now DrD's posting will make all the difference to me, as I now will change the topical and use it more frequently, or faster, and then stay on top of this as I am still not trusting that I will be ok ..I will follow Drd's advice..


... and will keep on eye on almonds, as I ate some the other day and felt what I thought was on irritation in my mouth soon after.. I attributed this to the acid reflux I recently developed, but now I am going to review the almonds from this new perspective...

Don't try and completely avoid arginine because it is an important part of a healthy immune system.

Supplement with Lysine to maintain balance (more during an outbreak would be appropriate).

Use Licorice gel topically when an outbreak is suspected.  (I empty licorice capsules into lysine cream) It eventually inactivates the RNA of the Herpes virus.

Thought you were suggesting you needed to avoid nuts? Oh I see you are just gonna use the shells ;) :D

Also, isn't it important to avoid combining the lysine with the arginine foods, as they cancel each other out?

Goldie most foods containing arginine also contain lysine so I reckon just eat foods higher in lysine?! Also eat your nuts separate or with food high naturally in lysine.. If I eat chocolate now I have it in the form of a deconstructed mousse ie with a tsp of pure whipped cream... ??) ;) There is a good list on the internet that shows which foods are higher in which amino acid, so you can choose...Also supplementing with lysine is useful for all sorts of things ;)

Dear Possum.. and Lola....  traditional foods for me was just a little tart with either fruit or cream or a slice of meat and some glaze over it. Yet to top it all of, there also is a swirl of whip cream on top.. so..... now with your writing of 'chocolate' and 'whip cream' > I am almost back to what I call 'soul' food.. good for my soul. hahaha...  (the good of cocoa powder is endless! I wonder what s really good about COCOA??!

I am getting it > I can make a difference in my herpes down the leg, with using a topical to relax the nerves. .... you know the toothpaste Sensodyne does that also.. I wonder what is in it? might it help for people with fewer blisters? or cancer sores ?

between the panthenine I think DrD calls his improved version of pantothenic acid and then eating foods to support the whole system there could be dramatic improvement, and a great deal of security built in.  

The nerve endings that get so irritated in sun or wind might just learn to tolerate that stress > and so no break out.  

ONE of the most important thing might be to always have Lola's suggested supplement in the house, for the day when one THINKS one felt on itch or a pang or a pain - like I do on my sciatica.. and then take that sup RIGHT AWAY for a few days.. thus nurishing the body as well as the nerves- not doing harm with chemical help which a full outbreak will need to content with.

I am grateful for all this thread and the answers.. it is just ammazing how the repeated questions of the same old thing > can produce so much great UPDATED information, form year to year, or from newbie to oldie. THANKS ALL.

For now I am staying away from nuts, I still have healing to do some place in my throat and stomach and intestines.. so at most I might learn to cook with fresh ground walnuts on top of meat or as a meat sauce?? I wonder......... mabye that is just enough > rather then a hand full of nuts?!
