There are so many choices when it comes to oats ..I bought a packet of rolled oats, soaked a cup overnight (in water) ..heated it up today and added some date syrup (this is a very yummy Middle Eastern thick jelly-like paste) and all natural too ...
my question is : whats the best type of oats? and how do you cook them ? interested in seeing others recipes :)

I've never had a problem with oats, so I usually buy Quaker rolled oats or equivalent...  Sometimes, I don't want much grain or want rice or quinoa instead of oats, so don't eat them all of the time.

I use oat flour (usually with flax meal, rice flour, etc.) for pancakes.

If I eat oatmeal, it is usually oats, cinnamon (sometimes ginger), ground flax seeds, walnuts, ghee and applesauce.

There are many other baked good recipes that I use oats for...

I like steel cut oats.  I don't pre soak them...just add them to boiling water and cook for 20 minutes.  I add cranberries, walnuts, maple syrup and milk.  Or I add cooked fruit.  This is one of my favorite breakfasts...I have it several times per week!

if intolerant to gluten, find GF variety

most oats are cross contaminated in the production plants with other gluten containing grains

Definitely don't eat prepackaged varieties.  You never know what they put in them. :-/

Me too.  I add water & soak for about 15 minutes and then microwave.  I blend in NAP type-O protein powder, carob powder, cinnamon, salt before the water and ghee afterwards, too.  Then I sweeten with agave nectar.

I personally don't do well on oats, even though they're listed as neutral on my SWAMI. I'm not sure if my past bad reactions to oats were from the oats themselves or from wheat contamination. One of these days, I'll try the GF oats and test myself again.

I buy Quaker or store-brand oats for my kids: we use them to bake cookies, to make into oatmeal (heat up water with honey, add oats, cook for 5 minutes, let cool, add milk, feed to DS.) I also buy organic instant oatmeal (less likely than non-organic varieties to have junk in them) for busy mornings. DD1 also likes to keep a box of instant oatmeal at school (she has a long day and a scheduled breakfast break daily.)

I know I don't reply well to them.. I experience the whole drop in blood sugar thing very badly after eating any wheat, or oats.. Could be because they have gluten in them idk?

But I will be starving after 2 hours or so of eating them, I'll notice I have to pee a lot too (probably stresses my body)

Bel- I honestly don't remember, it's been several years since I last ate oats. I just remember consuming them and then, a few days later, coming to the conclusion that they're a bad food for me. They probably caused an increase in fibromyalgia symptoms and/or made me short tempered.

add good fats and some form of protein....helps metabolize slower

I eat Gluten Free Steel Cut Oats.  Like Issy, I don't pre-soak them but rather gently boil then for 20 minutes.  I add a cup of fresh beneficial berries and a little cinnamon sprinkled on top.  Delicious.

I have been in the habit of soaking all my grains for at least 6 hours or more and then cooking. But, I did throw some in a slow cooker today with salt and lemon though.  

I like Bob's Red Mill Steel Cut Oats.  I don't know about the cross contamination thing, if it's an issue or not for me.  I may be finding out soon though.

You should try Bob's Red Mill Gluten Free variety.  They're really delicious.

Ive been cooking wholegrain rolled oats with a teaspoon of oat bran and milk, a bit of sugar and sprinkle of cinnamon (yes I know its an avoid for B's but I love it) on a low heat for 20 minutes. Must try the steel-cut ones I hear they cook quicker as they are smaller in size. I find oats curb my apetite and Im not hungry for a long time afterwards.

I don't think steel cut cooks any quicker.  Just my experience.  You need more water with them also than regular oats.

Correct.  They actually take a little longer to cook than regular oats which have been processed to a greater degree.

Oats doen't agree with me either.  As a presumed Gatherer I should be able to eat them, but they give me indigestion, and no other reactions that I can recall, except that as with most grains I'm always hungry again shortly afterward.  I love oats but I do better on protein/veggies/fruit and minimal grains.

Wholegrain oats are the ONLY wholegrain that I can eat without getting IBS symptoms and Im really happy about that so I eat a bowl of it a day, add some oat bran too and it keeps me full for a long time because its low GI. I saw some quick cooking oats that are more finely chopped which I might get once I run out.

I love the same ones Rob eats. I use 1/2 almond milk and 1/2 water to prepare then eat them with ghee, cinnamon and honey......yummo...my favorite breakfast!

I use water to prepare them then add ghee, cinnamon and either organic cherries or blueberries.
