I have a Generalised Anxiety Disorder on top of my IBS problems (they are interlinked no doubt) ..anything natural I can take thats compliant with B? I don't like taking drugs of any kind but I do occasionally take a 5mg Valium when Im really anxious and unable to sleep. I find it has no side-effects and doesn't really affect me the next day and I haven't become addicted to it ..I just take it once in a while.

I am a B and have GAD.  Untreated it gets really bad, panic disorder, agoraphobia etc.  I tried the natural route and didn't have any success.  I only have to take a baby does of medication and I attribute that to taking supplements and eating GT compliant foods.  I haven't had to take a benzodiazapine like Valium or Xanax in months.

Hopefully your GAD isn't really bad and you can get it under control without the use of drugs.  Every once in a while when I feel like I may be faced with a situation that could cause me axiety I take sublingual GABA (gama aminobutyric acid).  I get it at the health food store.  I take the GABA in place of a benzodiazapine like Valium or Xanax.

I'm currently taking Paxil for my GAD (in addition to meds for bipolar disorder).  I wish I didn't need them, but it's just a fact of life for me.  I tried quitting the meds this summer, and it was not pretty.  Not pretty at all.

Still, I wish I could get away from the Paxil.  I hate the side effects, and I've been hoping that the other two meds (Lamictal and Topamax) might mellow me out enough that I don't need it anymore.

I agree that the digestive issues and mood are related.  GABA makes me feel drugged and I've never been able to make use of it.  My approach has been to really stay on top of my gut issues by eating a gluten-free diet, as well as using my blood-type specific probiotic (Polyflora B) both as a supplement and the starter for my homemade goat yogurt. ARA6 has also helped a lot with my digestive health, and the daily use of ghee.

I strongly benefit from supplementing with Theanine (an amino acid from green tea), morning and evening.  Also the Bach flower remedies mimulus (for known fears), aspen (for non-specific anxiety and vague fears), white chestnut (for overactive mental obsessing, like a 'stuck record'), among others.  Any of those can be used alone, depending on the type of anxiety that is experienced

I have never felt drugged from GABA.  Have you ever been medically diagnosed with GAD, panic disorder or agoraphobia?

Nope.  It's just the way my body reacts to GABA.  I'm not saying it isn't a good supplement for other people.  :)

I also can't take Valerian root because it makes my heart rate speed up so much that I can't sleep.

That is probably why you don't feel drugged from it.  I am a hyper person by nature and my mind is always running, think of a tornado, that is what my mind is going thru a lot of the time.  I am not even phased by GABA, but think it might be helping me when I feel I need to use it.  I am a multi tasker, it comes naturally to me, "slow down" doesn't fall into my vocabulary or daily verbage until I am dog tired.

I have been going to bed around 10pm to 11pm now and have a hard time getting my mind to just rest.  It has gotten better in the last few months and I am doing better now that I am on an earlier schedule.  The melatonin has been helping me feel tired and helps me stay asleep.  I really don't think it would be a bad idea to maybe up it from the 3mg to a little more, but I am going with what I am on right now until my body adjusts to my new supplements and recommendations from Dr. D and his crew from the UB.

Thanks all for your feedback , much appreciated...yes I do feel better after exercising (walking mostly) but I still get anxious very quickly and its always one thing or another ..if itss not my health, its my kids health if itsnot them, its the stresses of life and work and everything else and I always assume the worse...its like this horrible constant feeling of dread and almost always leads to an IBS flare-up :-/

Victoria, you sound a bit like me so I will consider the supplements you mentioned. I have found Valerian upsets my stomach and it really STINKS !
I also use Rescue Remedy (not sure if it's available in the USA) but its a blend of calming herbs and plants ..I will check the ingredients list it may contain some of the ones you mentioned ..thanks :)

GABA is supposedly not able to permeate the blood-brain barrier, although in can exert some effects in the nervous system outside the brain.

My mom is type B+ and likely to be an explorer. She is 72 years old, and from a generation that will not talk to a doctor about mental health issues. However, I swear she has all the symptoms of GAD, but also all they symptoms of OCD.

She is constantly scanning the horizon for something to worry about. I pray she stops that.

I feel for your mom Jared.  Sounds like GAD to me and OCD usually goes along with it.  

I use to check  things, like the stove, just to make sure the stove was off or a burner was off.  I would check them 5 and 6 times, even when I hadn't used them because I thought maybe I bumped the knob.  Oh and did I lock the door?  Yes, but maybe it didn't lock all the way.  I still catch myself checking things or thinking "did I" and stop myself from the silliness.

I have some OCD too...the checking thing especially ..and I have GAD ..they go together and I think its common in B's... does Dr D think B types are more likely to suffer from depression and anxiety or is it non-type specific?

if you become aware of the difference that none of us can have any forms of anxiety...but that infact WE ARE anxiety.... so this enables us to overcome all such states of ... ;) :D(smarty)(ok)(dance)(hehe)...all about the question of awareness  ;D(whistle)

In one of his books, like an encyclopedia of disorders and what blood types are most and least prone to them, D'adamo discusses anxiety, OCD, ADHD, depression, and other psych disorders.  From my experiences, things like caffeine really increase anxiety and my fight or flight systems.  
What supps and meds do you take?  Even supplements and meds that actually are made to help you relax can increase anxiety in my personal experiences.
Anxiety can have both physiological causes and psyclogical causes, so it can be tough to pinpoint the exact root of the anxiety.  And t

What does your anxiety feel like?  Is it racing thoughts, a breathless panic, a hidden subconscious phobia perhaps, a panic with heightened senses, or just plain old worry?

I dont take any medication ...I dont like the side-effects from them. I tried anti-depressants in the past but it gave me the IBS which I am still living with. I take Valium once in a while when Im really anxious or cant sleep or my back is hurting a lot but thats it. I find it effective and a 5mg tablet does wonders once in a while (to avoid independence and addiiction). The feeling is like dread or the worst case scenario sort of thing. I have a special needs child and that is the main source of anxiety for me, the fear he might get into a dangerious situation, the fear I wont be able to look after him forever etc .... :(

That is a source of potential stress that you cannot eliminate.  It is important to take time for yourself as someone who gives care for someone else.  You want to be as strong as you can be to be able to help your child the best you can.  Don't feel selfish for wanting time for yourself to do things you love to do, otherwise you'll eventually slow down and become worn down.

I'm a counslor, and burnout is common in counselors who are frequently caring for others and never take time off for themselves. Exercising and diet are important.  Also, meds, even valium, can actually contribute to anxiety esp. after coming off of them.  But you should def. talk to your doctor about this.  I wouldn't just not take it if it was prescribed to you.

Once in awhile is def. ok if you are feeling overwhelmed and anxious.  But that is my opinion.  It good you don't rely on it too heavily.

I do try and make time for myself, I find during the day when he is at school the  best time and my husband is very supportive and does help a lot so Im thankful for that too. I also make sure I eat well (I wouldnt be on this forum if I didnt ;D) and of course exercise. The valium is something I take probably once a week max (1 tablet) when my back really hurts or Im really stressed, otherwise I avoid all meds as much as possible. I like to know I have it around just in case, another anxiety thing I guess. Thanks for your feedback , much appreciated :)

try taking magnesium. Most people are deficient, and it is known to be an antistress mineral. Plus when you are stressed, drink coffee/ caffeine or alcohol your body loses magnesium. Studies have shown that nearly all people who get panic attacks are deficient in magnesium, same with those who are depressed. Plus over 300 enzymes require the presence of magnesium ions for their catalytic action

So get a magnesium supplement try not to get oxide though because that's not very easily absorbed. You can try buying magnesium chloride or epsom salts and just take a bath in them every night. This is one of the best ways to absorb magnesium because it's absorbed right through your skin.

When I was in my teens I was extremely bipolar. I was miserable to live with. In my adult years I was in and out of balance and choose to never be on medication. I knew that I was going to finally find something that worked. As I follow my BTD/GTD I am totally peaceful and balanced. If I slip up I can get really depressed or manic, but I am never as bad as I was in my teens. I've been increasing my vitamin intake and trying to figure out where my deficiencies lie. I agree with ecstasy on the magnesium. Although I use magnesium oil as that is much more effective than epsom salts.
What I think is so difficult for B's is the fact that a lot of their highly beneficial dairy is all pasteurized and it's not that easy to find a good source of unpasteurized. If you can I highly recommend it. Also it's difficult for B's too because there is soy is pretty much everything these days. Total bummer.
