I'm trying to help my kids refine their diets. The past few days I've been focusing on "avoiding the avoids and encouraging them to eat at least some beneficials" but now I want to try and make sure they're eating "balanced" diets- eating about the right number of portions of fruits, veggies, grains, meats, and dairy products. I figure my 8yo should be having the same number of servings as an adult, but the servings should be proportionally smaller.

Is the information in LR4YT accurate, or does it say "servings per week" in places where it should say "servings per day"?

Or, could somebody just tell me how many servings of each food type an O and a B "should be" eating?

Ruthie, to be honest I will not be pushing the portion sizes with young kids, unless there is a serious case of obesity with any of them.  I would let them enjoy the freedom of selecting the right foods for their types without worrying about so many grams of this or that and only interfere if things get out of hand, like wanting to eat a whole jar of peanut butter in the one serve!!!  ;)

I'm not going to be super strict about it, but I do want to get a sense of "you haven't had enough grains today, maybe you should have a  bowl of oatmeal for bedtime snack instead of just a glass of milk" (or the opposite if he's had enough grains for the day.) How many fruits and veggies should he be eating? Should I encourage my daughters' to restrict their grain consumption, or worry when one of them eats lots of fruits but few veggies?

fruits and veggies, are the same amount for children as for adults, pass the age of three.  Use to be 1/4 c servings, then get's upped to 1/2 c servings, I wouldn't limit frequency, except maybe on the starchy veggies, that are probably avoids anyways.

have your searched childrens portions here to see if it has been discussed, before.  I'm not positive, but I have a faint recollection, of it, a few years, ago.  Of course, not sure, if it was something, that was saved.

I think you are a wise mother, to teach this to your children, as you learn it, Great Work!

Fruit frequency is low.

Should be per day and not per week.

I am less addressing youre question..  

WHEN I started BTD a long time ago, I read it as EAT as much as NEEDED not to be hungry.. I might have been mistaken-- I say might because although I ate pounds of beef (veg) a day I lost the most and easiest weight.  Its when I ate like that without restrictions to size, or frequencies - that I lost the most weight without realizing it.  

Only when I eat less -that I do not lose weight..... so in children- if they get to eat compliant foods without one or the other feeling deprived of what the other blood type child/person can have, then portion size will be self correcting over a month time.  The trick will be not having to feel like one or the other person gets more choices.. creating mental problems that can affect the lives in unknown ways.  

Smaller plates or bowels make a difference without prohibitions or constant vigilance.

A long time ago when I took my friends kids to live with me, one particular one was eating mountains of past only to be hungry 20 minutes later and not for junk, but for more food... I knew that a) I could not change what they learned overnight, and b) that I could not feed them useless foods. So what I did was have a bowl of HARD wrapped sugar candy on the table, along with walnuts and a bowl of fruits, and many bananas, so that they could satisfy food needs without fear that the other child will eat up 'available' food. Obviously I cooked right.. within 2 weeks the candy stayed on the table.. the fruits and nuts became no issues. the kids felt safe and comfortable and I never had food issues with any of the teenagers.  one of the thoughts I follow for kids is to buy good foods, 80/20 ratio. 80 % compliant Super and Beneficials,  20% all other things like neutrals, including all sugar choc and drink, fruit foods.. by having that in the house I never had food issues.. I only shope fresh foods/nothing prepared.

So I should just make sure I keep plenty of fruits and  veggies in the house, make sure there's at least one type each kid likes, and stop worrying about it?

Goldie- that's interesting that you were able to lose weight without worrying about portion size or frequency. My body doesn't work that way. There have been two times in my life when I was able to lose weight easile: the first time was when I was doing low-carb, and I very easily went from 190 lbs to 175 lbs without worrying about portion size or frequency (except of carby foods.) I stayed at 175 for well over a year, s.l.o.w.l.y. dropping to 170 and then regaining those 5 lbs. On BTD, I kept playing around with those same 5 lbs.

Then, when I first started SWAMI, it took me a few weeks to get down to the recomended portions, and then I easily lost another 10 lbs in one month. Then life got in the way and I haven't gotten back to SWAMI portions, and I'm still at 160 lbs. I expect to drop the last 27 lbs if I can get back to "not overeating."

yes to all you wrote.. saying that compliancy for me is king.. compliancy for me is Super and Bene only.. for me that is way enough restriction.  After that I eat it is not so much about the word LIKE as you used it in the first line, but rather, best choices available, and then I feel less deprived.  Actually I like my foods and most people like their foods.. so not being deprived for me was more important then all else as it affords me to stay compliant and get super foods as medicine and bene as fill me up foods.

I must say, it stopped many issues with the kids that grew up on cr.p.. and today they are all well grown up and sensible, while they used to fight over every morsel of available food WHEN it was available.. food.. for fear of being hungry.. which they where the end week every month.
