We just got back from a relaxing & refreshing 4 days away in ChristChurch where we had a great time catching up with a friend on a 3 different days, spent an enjoyable couple of days with my sister & her husband, and also, in between walked around the city by ourselves, getting plenty of vit D & exercise... :)

On our forays out for food, although I guess I shouldn't have been, I was amazed at the lack of available takeaway BT friendly food options... ::) I had entertained vague ideas that I'd be able to cover off by getting a salad at Subway... ??) & thinking I'd avoid the obvious by just getting plain lamb or beef & basic salad minus dressing, I was so not prepared to be quite as surprised by the list of ingredients in the meats...... :o
I think there were at least three different types of sugars... ??) :o Not to mention anything else at all suspicious in the way of different additives & No's... ??) Obviously its all about preserving it, but I ask you?? WT???? What happened to their slogan "eat fresh"? ??)

Wondered where you'd gone to, there wasn't many jokes on the board  :'( :)

Glad you had a nice holiday though sounds like hard hunting and foraging.  True what you say, nitrates linked with stomach cancer and it's everywhere.  (verymad) Crazy!

Yeah - it was a great holiday thanks!! Was going to announce it here b4 we went, but I get paranoid about making news like that public... :-/ Sorry about the lack of jokes...there were plenty flying around, wherever we went ;D

Hmmm ??) interesting hunting for suitable foods... ??) Starting with the so not compliant snack on the plane on Saturday & ending with the a rerun of the same today...it was certainly a mixed bag in between ::)

Leftovers of curried vegies & beef mince served well for a late brekky on checkin... but after that it ranged from finding nothing a couple of times and resorting to nibbling on dark chocolate.... to a mediocre lamb roast (very tough) and on another occasion having to settle for a couple of gluten free beefburgers - really just mashed potato patties, which we felt must have been vaguely embarrassed by something bovine at one point in a former life, resulting in a faint blush to the normally palid potato colour...

Enjoyed Groper & roast vegies at one place & feta & roast veg salad at another...
But the piece de resistance was an absolutely delicious rib eye steak with spinach pesto... However this was spoilt slightly by the fact that the accompanying salad, housed an unwelcome addition, in the form of a piece of screwed up plastic wrap, that we can only hope was just enroute to the rubbish bin & not escaped from it :o)

All in all though we didn't starve & had some interesting experiences... ;)

Whoa!  This is NOT a pretty picture! (eek)

:X No matter how bad the food is, it can only get worse when things show up in it that are definitely NOT food!

It must be great to have access to your own kitchen again!   :K)

I went on a mini vacation with my husband a couple of weeks ago.  This vacation I decided not to fret about what I could and couldn't eat.  I can be a real downer if I am being obsessive about the do's and don'ts on this way of life.

I bought deflect last year and never really took it.  Well I took it with me on vacation, figuring it was better than not using it at all.  I had a great vacation and pretty much ate what I wanted due to having little control over what restaurants serve.  I got lucky one night when we were at Belmont Shore because there was about 6 or 7 Lebonese restaurants.  Well,.... That means lamb and basmatti rice for me.. ;D  I also had salads, with non compliant dressings  :'(  however, I get it on the side and dip my fork in it then pick up my salad and take a bite.  When I am done with my salad, I still have a full ramikin of dressing.

Anywhooo, what I am trying to say is, eating while on vacation is rough.  If we can't find BTD/GTD compliant food, we can either forgoe food and lose weight or do what I did, not fret and gain 6 lbs. :o  I had fun with my husband before he left and that is all that mattered to me at the time.  Thankfully, I have lost 8 lbs. since being back on program and that weight gain was only temporary.  Also, I'm feeling so much better eating my GTD compliant foods.

Frosty - Yeah, don't get me wrong I had a great time with my man, as well as my sister & Bro in law & a friend we caught up with, but it definitely makes it way harder being a nonnie & an (almost sure) Explorer & having the mega reactions I would have if I didn't avoid certain foods...(skin break outs::))

If weight gain was the price I paid, I could cope with that (knowing like you that it would be only temporary); but funnily enough, unlike you, I don't lose weight missing meals - I'm more likely to gain...due to my metabolism getting mucked up...

Yes it is always good to get home again... I kinda missed my kitchen, definitely missed my turkey & my newly discovered goat meat... :D not to mention the abundance of vegies I have access to...Oh & my computer ;D

I'm going away next weekend for the 1st time since starting on this plan and I have to admit, I'm a little nervous about having to eat in restaurants.  Funny thing is, it used to be my favourite part about going away!   (A good chance to eat a lot of junk food!)  I guess that was my biggest problem...always making excuses and that's the reason why I've ended up over-weight all my life!

So any advice for a newbie who wants to stay on track?  I'm thinking of bringing a tetra pack of soy milk, maybe order oatmeal for breakfast and use my soy milk there and in my morning coffee.  Lunch seems a little scary at this point...probably in a highway diner.  And then, supper in the city and if my husband has his way, it will probably be in a pizzaria!

I could use the help of you experts who have been doing this longer than my short 3+weeks!

The oatmeal/milk idea is good.
Just choose the most compliant foods available...salads with lemon and olive oil on the side, fresh fruit, fish, turkey, veggies.( Order the veggie pizza with cheese and don't eat the dough.) I travel with baggies of almonds, pecans, walnuts, dried cranberries and dates. Take some rice/seeds crackers.
Even if you cannot be totally compliant just do your best, don't worry and enjoy yourself! Stress hurts A's!!!!!

You said it!  I wonder how reclusive I'm becoming, though.  I've got my little routines, my compliant kitchen coming nicely into place, and I don't like to go outside that comfort zone.

I have not spent a night away from home since starting BTD last September and SWAMI in December.  It will be interesting to see how I function when we go on vacation.  And I will be pining to get away to the beach as soon as it warms up in spring. At least on beach holidays we can get fresh seafood, which is good for both DH and me.  And fresh salads.  Just have to remember to AVOID the umbrella drinkies and the salty snacks.   :B

We always take some complaint foods with us when we travel by car so we can have "emergency" food for when we can't find anything edible on the menu.  Many places are willing to alter made-to-order foods per your needs, if you ask them.  Barring either of these, we do the best we can, or find a grocery and get some basics to make it through...  We rarely go hungry, though...
