Hi, I'm a little unsure as to how to rate my rice.  Basamati rice is a super for me, and brown rice is a neutral. So how would I rate my brown basamati rice?  Any thoughts?

Yeah, the best rice we have ever ate. Brown basmati is the one rice for me. I can't eat any other rice (or buckweat) - it's too heavy to my liver. My wife just likes the taste of it (O+ Hunter).  :)

"Rice" (whether brown or white) would be your standard short- or long-grain rice.  Basmati is a particular type.  

Brown basmati is good!

So, do you think white basamati is good?  My swami says "white rice" as an avoid..and under my beneficials it has "basmati" (no indication of white or brown) and brown rice.
I find that confusing  :-/

What I meant was "Brown basmati tastes good!" ;)

Basmati, whether brown or white, has a low glycemic index.  My assumption is, if it doesn't say, it doesn't matter.  But of course I might be wrong.

Brown basmati makes a great rice pudding with a hint of cardamom, divine! (Well if you like that sort of thing)

Brown basmati rice is definitely a superfood for you.  When the book says that brown rice is neutral, it means regular brown rice (short or long-grain, any variety other than basmati).  Basmati rice, brown or white, is a superfood for you, but I'd go with the brown basmati (see reply to Mayflowers, just below this sentence...)

Just mho but I'd go with the brown basmati, fer shuuuur.  In fact, I DO go with the brown basmati, Lundberg brand, to be exact.  It is virtually the only grain I eat.  I will eat quinoa but have not bought it in ages, as I prefer the basmati for most things.  The white is FAR starchier, it is like a totally different animal.  It cooks MUCH faster and I'm not too keen on the texture.  Like I said, VERY starchy, feel like I'm getting a carb overdose and not enough fiber, ya know?  Go with the brown basmati.  (That said, I think you could consider the white basmati at least to be neutral, if not a superfood, so it would be okay to have if you prefer it...but, honestly, the brown basmati is SO much better.  I personally think Dr. D. means that both varieties, white and brown, of basmati rice are superfoods, since it just has "basmati rice" under superfood.)

My take on the basmatic rice is also that includes the white or brown variety in the same rating, unless specifically indicated, like Ribbit and others here explained.

It is interesting the ratings of the different rice food items in our Swami lists.  Below is the extract from my Swami which gives Moderate Deemphasis to foods considered high in Fructose, Gluten, Gliandin or Prolamine and High Glycemic Index. It also gives strong emphasis to foods rich in Butyric Acid and Total Dietary Fiber .

Thanks everyone for your input.  I felt that the brown basamati was super but just thought I'd double check.  I rarely have any grains, but my husband sometimes likes rice so I figured I might as well get the kind that's the best for us.

Hmm.I do love white basmati. I have Texmati in the store. That's brown basmati. I'll have to look for Lundberg. Never heard of it. Thanks Ms. PT et al. :)

It seems a good idea to split to 'white' and 'brown' ALL the specific rice types, isn't it?

That is a good suggestion, Bearhunter.  That would have been a good thing to do in the GenoType Diet book.  However, I think it is pretty clear that if it says "Rice, basmati", it means all varieties of basmati rice.  But that would have been even better, as it would have removed any ambiguity or confusion whatsoever.  Too late to change the GenoType Diet Book entries, but you might wish to post that suggestion for Dr. D. in the thread that includes suggestions for improving SWAMI:

I have no access to brown basmati, where I live, yet my explorer non secretor LDN body loves white basmati!!!

no GI issues for me......

gr8 i feel much better about the whole basmati thing now, basmati it is ;D, i was eating it for a while and got out of rhe habit, I will def try the basmati rice pudding recipe, most recently for my daughter ruby i have made short grain brown rice pudding,  with rice milk and butter prbably would have been better if I didnt keep forgetting about it in the oven, :X as  result it kept Drying out, (had oven on low)  I rehydrated it with water, and blended it up in the zz zz (which to me is the stick blender ) popped it back in the oven,   and it softened up the crunchy  rice stuff on top with raisins, allspice, cloves and ginger yum!!, well actually I might try again, amybe with ground almonds at the end this time . ;)
