Is it "ah- gah-vay" or "ah-gave"?

If I were you, and I was ordering by phone, I will try to say it both ways.  Otherwise you can always write it on a note and show it to the shop assistants and listen to their way of saying it.  You will probably find that if you try this in a few different shops, they will all have their own way of saying things, agave no exception.  If really buying it, make sure you write the word organic in front of it, it will provide that extra notch to your nutrition (assuming is on your allows).  I love it, no matter how it is pronounced.   :) :)

Thanks for the audio link!

I wasn't having a problem ordering it- I've found it on the shelf in several local stores, and have some in my pantry right now.  I realized I wasn't sure how to pronounce it when asking my kids if they wanted honey or agave in their tea!

After I posted that reply last night, I was wondering about it... Surely, it is Ruthiegirl posting this, to whom I suspect Agave is not something new?  You seem so active in this forum and I am always looking forward to your posts. But, we all come from different parts of the world and even for some people in America where all this originated from, sometimes food items are misunderstood or hard to find. So I did not want to take anything for granted.  It is a valid question no matter where or whom it comes from, but your second post help me understand why you posted it.  Thank you. What did your kids ended up choosing?  I wish I could send you a jar of my home honey ... ::)  ;D  :) :)

Oh, what my kids choose depends on their whim at the moment. I'll use agave when there's a chance he or she won't  finish the cup and I might want it. ;)

What promted this post was that I went to a friend's house, and she offered me agave with my tea. But she pronounced the word differently than I did, and I wondered who was right. Turns out she was, and I've been mispronouncing the word for months.  :B

LOL       reminds me of the conv w/ a friend re: the pronunciation of taupe. I have always heard it pronounced tope. Long O.   She pronounces it tawp and was quite adamant about it LOL   We just each say it as we are used to. ;-)

Oh well, the sound is not working on this pinhole leaking old notebook soon to go to the trash.  But it is not important.  I will try that link when I set up the new laptop.  Cheers.   :)

I can't hear it either. Something to do w/ a plugin. Anywho, I say it "ah- gah-vay". Wrong or right, that's my way LOL

Cool link. I think I got the pronunciation of "agave" right when I realised it was from Mexico.

And for the record (and for those without any sound!) "taupe" is a French word and is pronounced "tope" not "tawp". Italybound, you're right! ;D

I thought it was French and knew I was saying it right if it was, but I wasn't 110% sure, so didn't want to 'argue' the point. You know...pick your fights and all LOL
