BTD Forums  /  SWAMI Xpress  /  GTDers turned SWAMIs: in genotype field...
Posted by: Peppermint Twist, Thursday, October 1, 2009, 6:50pm
Did you let SWAMI conclude your genotype, based on all the other info you are inputting, or did you input your genotype, based on your own measurements, blood type, secretor type, and other specs you used to conclude same when starting the GTD?

Just wondering.  I kinda want to see what SWAMI concludes.  To me, that is kinda the point:  to see what SWAMI concludes I am and what my uber-customized diet should be.  Then again, if it tells me something other than Gatherer, well... :o  On the other hand, just to argue the other side, since I think I'm a Gatherer, based on conclusions drawn from following instructions in the GTD (and the fact that the G2 diet has worked amazingly for me), shouldn't I input that, to give SWAMI the most info possible upon which to chew?

What did y'all do?  Or did you try it both ways?  And if the latter, and the result differed, which did you ultimately go with?

I'm all a'twitter!

(I haven't actually run SWAMI yet because I have to redo certain required measurements from when I originally started the GTD, such as waist, hip, etc., as they no doubt have changed since I've now lost 52 lbs.  Plus some required fields ask for info I have not yet figured out, such as fingerprint pattern.  So I haven't run it yet, but I'm very curious as to if you guys think it best to input your genotype or leave that up to SWAMI.)

I put in my teacher genotype because according to the book, with my stats and secreter status there is no other option for me.

1.   ;D That makes it easy, then!  As I recall, I have to be a Gatherer, too.  It would be diff if my finger lengths were even a hair different, but they aren't.  They are what they are, bless 'em.

2.   I like your little ticker thingy and I'm going to go to that site and try to get me one!  I know the goal here is health, glorious health (can I get an AMEN?), but for those of us for whom weight loss is a component of that journey, it is a cool idea to run that little celebratory ticker down at the bottom of our posts, if'n we get the notion.  It's cool!  I am going to get one set up--weeee!

SWAMI uses a more complex algorithm that considers more factors that the advanced or intermediate calculators in the book.

So unless you have a reason to exclude this additional knowledge being applied to determining your GenoType you should let SWAMI determine the GenoType.

I am a gatherer who turned out a SWAMI explorer, but my diet isn't so different. Several diamonds became SFs & several dots that I really liked became neutrals! Only green beans which are bennies for all GTS & BTs became a dot or avoid, depending on secretor status. This is very strange as I ate them often.  The portions are smaller for the meats than I normally eat, but are not too horrible if one has a normal appetite. The oils are only 3 TBS a week, which is ridiculous & I am still eating more.  I gained 10 # over last winter after staying around 140#(or even less for some time)for 4 years! That was the lightest I had been for 20? years. Maybe 150# on a 5'3" frame make the portions smaller. I'll deal with that later.
First, look at your new diet. It may be very similar to what you have been having & you may choose to alter it a little. I do.(Sorry, Dr. D!) I eat more oil & more meats(red, fish, & poultry) than suggested. I'm eating more fruit cuz it is very abundant here & I gotta eat it before it spoils. :) I rarely drink fruit juices, though & need to eat more eggs, which I'm sure will cut down the meat cravings....
Like any new thing you may doubt, start slowly. I bet you will do just fine!

Me too! I wouldn't have purchased SWAMI and spent time inputting information without allowing it to calculate my genotype.

If there had been a discrepancy between what I calculated and what SWAMI calculated, I think I'd tend to trust SWAMI.

You can get help from others regarding your differing calculations.

Peppermint,

Yeah, I like the ticker because it keeps me accountable and tracking my weight, not falling into traps of not paying attention.

You can make the tickers anything too, not just weight loss goals...

Thank you, C!  That's what I love:  a clear answer!  I will let SWAMI decide.  I knew it factored in more stuff, but I wondered if, in the event a user enters a genotype, it just takes that into consideration as, okay, this is what the user thinks s/he is, but I will use that as just one piece of info out of the whole in concluding what I think s/he is.  You seem to be saying that, no, if you put in your genotype, that will override SWAMI concluding it for you.  I don't want to do that, I want to have the benefit of the complex algorithm, for sure.  Thanks again!  I will leave my genotype as a tabula rosa.

I agree, that is one of the main reasons for buying Swami--to check on our own 'diagnosis'. I would have said that I am 60% sure that I am Warrior, but Swami said 72% which was a great confirmation.

I don't remember putting in gatherer, but put my measurements which are gatherer measurements. I assume the diet is the same whether or not I am both types on paper.

Are you sure the halpogroup of my son & mine would be the same?  He did that test & if we are the same, I'd love to input that info!

Haplogroups based on mitochondrial nucleic acid and are the same between mother and child (of either gender).

Set this one:

Mitochondrial DNA Haplogroups:

Haplogroups based on DNA from the Y chromosome are the same between father and son. You should not use a haplogroup from your son for the Y chromosome setting.

Do not set this one from data from your son.

Y Chromosome DNA Haplogroups:

but she could use her brother s test results for that, if she had one, right?

Yes! She could use her father or a brother to determine her paternal haplogroup.

I let SWAMI choose! I was a Teacher on the GTD...and really had a hard time with my list...I'm an Explorer on SWAMI...and the SWAMI food list makes my body SOOOOOOOOOOO much happier!!!

Let it decide  :D

just look at me ;D book says Nomad

I tried both, and they are exactly the same for me.  Like syren, I am clearly a teacher in the book and on swami.  I think swami will override you if it thinks you are wrong anyway *lol*.

According to my SWAMI, what you just said is false.  All my measurements put me in the Teacher category in the book.  But SWAMI puts me back as a Nomad due to all of the other "reasons".  Like my fingers, etc.  In this case, the book can be overridden.

Dr.D. states this in his swami bug reports:

"SYMPTOM

You chose to have SWAMI calculate your GenoType and it is different from the result of using the calculators in The GenoType Diet Book.

PROBLEM/ EXPLANATION

SWAMI Xpress uses it's own calculation library to calculate GenoType. It is much more in-depth and flexible than the system used in the book, so it is not unlikely that one could result in a GenoType that is at variance from the book.

However, SWAMI does actually perform the simple book calculation as well as it's own calculation library subroutines. If it notices that the two results differ, SWAMI will automatically enter a 'hybridize mode' and synthesize food values from a 'blend' of GenoType and blood type values.

STATUS

Alerted."

I let SWAMI choose my genotype.  It correctly typed me as a Teacher. I had
incorrectly typed myself as a Warrior from the book.  (and wasted 18 months on
the wrong diet)

I'm not so sure it will.

I let SWAMI choose for me. And then just for fun I selected both Teacher and Warrior to so see how the diets would change. Both times it made it pretty clear that I had chosen to override my best GT match. I was hoping to see what % it would give me for the other two "A" options, but it didn't  :-/

Wow! I am so glad I read this thread. I went back in and had the swami figure out my genotype. I went from being a Teacher to being Warrior. From just a quick glance at my new food lists, there are some changes, none that look too big except fpr the dairy. I got some sea food back that I love that was avoid on the teacher list. It is a little weird that it changed because back when the Genotype book first came out I had questions about being a teacher and even the web page said I was a teacher. I kind of like being a genotype Warrior!

I just went into mine to see what would happen if I pick Teacher and it told me I was stupid and shouldn't do that.  It did change the lists, somewhat.  But not enough to make me cry.  Some superfoods became neutrals and what not.  A few superfoods became black dots, but I'm not going by the book.  I'm trying to do what swami wants for me.  Now, if I feel terrible from swami, then I'll think about it.  But for now, I'm swami'd.  I like the lists better anyways.  Except the teacher version let me eat more helpings of nuts.   :D   Oh well.

Explorer: never doubted it after I stopped panicking from "loosing" my carbs.

PT. You should benefit from the Swami once you get it running. Just one more great thing to look forward to!

I have an enlarged heart from obesity and cirrhosis of the liver, and edema. Unlike you, I started taking the diuretics the MD gave me.  That was over a year ago. I am now confident with the weight-loss coming from actually adhering to my Swami portion-wise, that I can make it without the pills. Gonna loose 150 lbs more.

My MD was saying that my heart, liver, and edema were all reversible if I lost enough weight.  Women are stronger than men in this dept. So if I am "reversible" at a BMI well over 45 you can bet your last dollar that you are as well! I am also loosing weight like I never have on GTD; half a pound on a perfect day. Every perfect day. You are doing great with GTD. When you are ready, Swami will be better after the inital adjustment period.

I suspect that when you Swami, your diet will have an Explorer turn to it. Genotypes are locations for GTDers, but directions to those of us in Swami-land. Since heart and cancer are not particular dangers for Explorers I expect you to continue loosing weight and keeping us updated on the board for a good long time!

Less frequency though.  Which is OK.  I haven't been eating them that much.  I like not having to worry so much about which ones when I do though.
