BTD Forums  /  Nonnie Clubhouse  /  Found out why I might be a non-secretor

There are 9 people in my immediate family, including my parents.  All my 6 brothers were born from the same mother, same father- yet I'm pretty sure I'm the only non-secretor.  I was the only sick child, and everyone eats the same (i.e. terribly) yet nobody else seems to have problems with food except me. (I've been tested as a nonnie, but nobody else will test their secretor status)

Anyway, I got an interesting piece of information from my dad last week- he told me that when my mom was in her 1st trimester with me, she came down with a really bad viral infection of chicken pox.  I can only speculate that this could be a possible reason for my nonnie-ness.  I'm not asymmetrical, which means her pregnancy couldn't have been full of stress.  But could getting a bad infection cause the FUT-2 deficiency?  I don't know whether being a non-secretor is genetic or if it's something that happens in utero; however, I feel like this could be the link for me.  Thoughts?

Interesting insight, Eric.  I hope you get some answers on this subject, because many of us are the only one in our family who are nonnies.

Interesting..  is there any research about people born to mothers who contracted certain diseases when pregnant?  I still can't help but feel like that has something to do with my sick childhood

My mom told me she got chicken pox when she was pregnant with my brother, he's always been the healthiest of all of us. I've been wondering a lot about my health conditions lately too. My mom did tell me she went through a lot of stress when she was pregnant with me though.
