Ok, i've had this cold (or whatever it is) for going on 5 weeks.  I'm getting really fed up with it!.  

The first 2-3 weeks were the worst of it.  The last couple of weeks i've keep going back and forth, feeling like i'm almost over it and then it getting worst again.  My main complaints are fatigue, cough and nasal congestion.

I've tried many things to try to get over this but nothing seems to be working.  I haven't gone to the dr. since i know they won't beable to do anything for me.  Besides that i can't afford to go just for them to tell me that there's nothing they can do.

If anyone has ideas to help me feel somewhat human again i'd appreciate it!.  ;D

I like oil of oregano caps.  They can be sort of strong, so you don't take too many too quickly.  Of course follow with probiotics later.  The other option is too chop a garlic clove
and take it with water.  Don't necessarily chew it if you don't want garlic breath.  Both of these are strong things you can try.  The oregano oil isn't cheap if it's a good one.  I hope these might be helpful for you! ;)

Thanks for the info.

Yes, if i had money right now i'd probably go and buy an arsenal of stuff.  Though one thing that doesn't cost much is the garlic, soo i'll give that a try.  Soo do you mean you cut the garlic, put it in water and drink it?.  I do eat alot of garlic but only have it raw when i put it in chelation pesto.

Long colds have been going on around here too.  Although I don't know if it has been completely fatiguing to folks.  

I take a lot of different stuff that kills all kinds of stuff and I wouldn't know where to start.  But garlic really is a good place to start.  A lot of people say elderberry is a strong immune booster.  I have drops that don't sit well with me, so I can't attest to how it works.

Here's what works for me:

~~First off, be gentle with yourself. This is pretty obvious, but when you're sick of being sick, it's hard to relax. This too shall pass--honest   :)

~~Stay with soft foods, especially soft-cooked beneficial veggies. You can put them in soups and stews of course, and don't forget savory smoothies. Paired with beneficial protein like beef or turkey broth or as filling for an omelette or frittata, they offer lots of nutrition and will help heal inflammation. 

~~Try ginger-peppermint tea. It's very warming and the essential oils also help with healing inflammatory conditions.

~~Deflect and probiotics will give your body help to repair and rebuild damaged tissues and pathways.

I think what I've done is chop up a clove and sort of try to swallow it down with a glass of water without chewing.  I still have a bit of garlic breath from it, but it's not as bad as if I chewed it up.
I also try not to overdo it cause it's strong.  But eating pestos with raw garlic is a great idea also.  In the past when I was having an allergy type of cold, runny stuffed nose, I would open a probiotic cap into a cup of room temp water and drink that down, it would seem to help my nose.  That's another thing to try if you have any probiotics
around....my daughter likes this cold season tea from tradional medicinals that I think has elderberry in it, it helps her alot too.  I think it's not too expensive and we even find it at Nob Hill food store and I think Safeway...hope you feel better soon!

Something that is really helping me get over my cold is a saline nasal mist called Simply Saline.  The ingredients are purified water, 0.9% sodium chloride - that's it- no preservatives or anything else.  You can get it at a regular grocery or drug store.

It really helps with the nasal congestion.  I use it a few times a day.  I only get one cold a year but it always lasts forever.  This cold is one of the shortest I've had in years.  I think I'm over it but I'm still using the saline spray because of the dry air inside this time of year.  It keeps the nasal passages moisturized.  It can be used as often as needed.

I just posted this in another thread for a cold...

Mike's G'ma's Parsley and Garlic Soup.

24 ounces water
big bunch of FRESH parsley, chopped
3-4 cloves fresh garlic, chopped
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 teaspoon seat salt

Bring water to a boil and add the rest of the ingredients.  Simmer for 10 minutes.  Drink, slurp, enjoy.  Quick recovery to you.  Recipe can be doubled easily.

Eating compliantly, getting enough sleep, drinking lots of liquids (elderberry tea...also some detoxing teas (even on days without the sniffles or flu like symptom's lurking in the wings) such as ELDERBERRY TEA, dandelion, milk thistle, stinging nettle, licorice root).  And...the O exercise. ;)

have you been able to rest at all?  i had one come on and started immediately with the Quercetin stinging nettle root to ward off a possible allergy infection and then some c and rested.

i did do saunas to help move it through and hot baths.

no workouts.

Have you tried elderberry?  If you can't find the tea, go to the hfs and get the sambucal syrup and take that. I swear by elderberry..for the common cold , flu, and pneumonia  :) I drink the tea regularly and watch all the people around me at work get sick and I just sit there smiling. I'm tired of telling people. They think I'm crazy that elderberry would cure the cold. That's because doctors don't want people to know it does..so you'll go pay them to get antibiotics that do nothing.  I told the woman I work with (an O) to try it and she laughed at me. So she comes to work with a cold at least 2 times a year and suffers..I just don't get people.. :-/

No dairy or any congesting foods. Simple combinations of foods.
One doctor says a trip to Hawaii does the trick! Maybe it's getting some sunshine!
Since many of us can't get much in the winter, megadoses of vitamin D are helping. It's the latest discovery(or rediscovery) & has helped not only in colds, but depression & some other diseases!
Fish around on Google for Home First Medical Services. It's a medical practice in the Chicago area in a few locations, mostly suburbs. Dr. Eisenstein is the director. See what he has to say. Vitamin D is one of his latest promotions. It has helped me this year.  I feel less depressed, even tho I can't do much in this loooooong winter we are having.
Today will be over 60 degrees & I plan to go out in shorts(but 4 layers on top!) to get some sun on my body. Tomorrow it will get cold again. Chicago! What more can we say!!!!

be sure to read the ingredients carefully. almost every sambuca syrup I've ever seen has avoids.  :-/  Tho I do agree w/ Mayflowers that elderberry rocks!! :-)

Thanks Again for all the Info.!!!!

I went out today and got: parsley & garlic for Mike's Gram's soup, 100% ginger tea (i plan to try the ginger/peppermint tea combo) and the ingredients to make chelation pesto.  I wish i would've checked the MB before i went to the store, maybe i'll go back tomorrow to see if i can find the trad. medicinals cold tea or elderberry tea.

Mickey...your welcome...anytime.;)  This soup has saved me many a time.  Even when I am feeling a bit blah...I make a batch and feel great after.  If you can't afford the elderberry syrup...the tea is just as fantastic.  Why look for something else when this works. ;) :D

I went to WF's a few days ago to look for the elderberry tea and they didn't have any.  They did have the trad. medicinals tea that Paulam suggested, but it didn't have elderberry in it.  It had elderflower in it and i asked one of the salespeople if it was the same and they said no.  Soo i ended up getting an elderberry extract.  What brand of elderberry tea do you use?.

Tried the ginger/peppermint tea you suggested and it was soo good!!!.  I have tried just ginger tea that i made myself and it was very strong, soo it was hard to get down.  I put a ginger tea bag and a peppermint tea bag together.

Yes i started using the NeilMed Sinus Rinse (which uses the same method as the netti pot) and i also am using nasal washes like Ayr and GSE Nasal Spray.

Bumping this thread - good info in it.

I have a cold-flu thing - my second only in over 7 years of BTD  ;D I used to get this bi-annually, so 2 bouts in over 7 years is really incredible.

Perhaps it is since I tweaked my swami and gained back tomatoes - I have been eating them everyday for almost 2 months since it was so exciting to have them back in over 7 years of nearly total abstinence lol.

Would you start on sambucol 6 days into a sore throat / congested nose and chest? Since I have never found real elderberry-anything in my country, this is the closest we get to it.

Also, what is the difference between a bacterial or a viral cold/flu? (if you look at Dr D's protocols that is)

I second the fresh grated ginger and lemon tea for sore throat - wish I had of started it earlier -  totally thought it was just a sore throat and that it would go away quickly  :-/

Put a heaping Tb of powdered ginger in a big dishpan;  fill 2/3 full with hot tap water.  Soak your feet until they are pink and the water begins to cool.  Vigorously towel-dry your feet and put on warm socks or climb in bed.

I've been dealing with a chronic illness for over two weeks now. Flu that turned into nasal congestion, post nasal drip and bronchitis cough.

Today was the first morning that I did NOT wake up coughing, so I know I'm getting better.

My recovery is going better than last time, where it took me three months to get over it.

Here are my supplement regemins

Empty stomach 2x a day
1500 mg Bromelain
2 Deflect
2 ARA Plus
2 Polyflora
2 Gastro-D Complex

With meals 2x a day
2 Astraglus (sp)
2 Proberry
1 Redoxa
1-2 Stinging Nettle leaves

Peppermint Oil on my chest 2x a day.

I'm out of Intrinsa, but I will be ordering it soon to go with the Gastro-D.

I also wonder about your vitamin D levels.  Do you take D3?  A year ago I suffered cold after cold, getting sick every other week for 4 months & the final cold lasted 5 weeks +.  Once I got my vitamin D levels up, I would only get mild colds, once or twice a year.  As soon as I backed off considerably on the D3, I got sick again.  I take 2300 IUs/ day & it works for me.  I know others take much more than that, but that works well for me.  Wishing you health again soon.

For myself, I have not gotten sick for about, almost 2 years.  I do get out in the sun and get sun; my husband always wants me to wear a hat, but a hat is uncomfortable for me.  I know this last bout was from an avoid binge... Hopefully I've learned my lesson this time.

Okay, i always wondered this. What is a "clove" of garlic, it is not the whole bulb but one of those little toes that you can pull off the bulb? Right?

Yes, a clove is the little "toe" that you pull off the big bulb. The bulb consists of about a dozen cloves of varying sizes, the bigger ones near the outside and smaller ones in the middle. You may only need half a clove from the outer layer and then eat 2 or 3 of the smaller ones together when you get to the inside of the bulb.

I love this idea Victoria, as soon as I read your post I tried this, and it was super relaxing, hopefully detoxing also.

KimonoKat - sounds like you are finally winning - it drags you down doesn't it. I have been sleeping propped up so I don't feel like I am suffocating under the congestion, so uncomfortable.

Some other things -
Taking chlorella daily.
Started on the sambucol elderberry, even though it is probably too late, I have never tried it before. My only concern with this would be if it tried to slow down the mucus removal - as this is how the body rids itself of the germs by building a mucus shield around them and getting them out of the body as quickly as possible. I am not sure what a ramped up immune response would actually be... :-/
Drinking fresh ginger, lemon & thyme tea - 1 x pot, 3 x daily.
Eating parsnip, thyme and turkey soup for breakfast & lunch (packed with garlic, tarragon, sweet potato and lemon too)
Taking polyfora between meals.

I've been sleeping sitting up too honeybee! For over a week I was propped up on the end of the sofa.  I had to sleep there because I kept waking up Mr. KK with my coughing, so HE wasn't getting any sleep!

honeybee, look at the health protocols for sinus support, anti-viral, and anti-inflammatory for your type.  That's what I drew my supplement list from.
