BTD Forums / Live Right 4 Your Type / Chitinase.....?
Posted by: shells, Tuesday, October 21, 2008, 9:24am
Would anybody be able to explain what chitinase means or perhaps a chitinase allergy or allergen? I have come across this term quite a few times especially in relation to my Genotype.
Google tends to send me on red herrings :o
Any comment would be appreciated if anyone knows.
Cheers :)

Thanks guys,.....from what I gather an allergic cross-reactivity occurs with the evolutionary defense protein of certain foods in certain people. This defense protein (chitin) is a type of anti-fungal...occurring mostly in these foods:
avocado
chestnut
kiwi fruit
banana
bell pepper
potato
tomato
peach
and of course those mentioned above and probably a lot more.
hmmmm.....all avoids for me at least 8)

Sorry to resurrect an ancient thread but...if I'm not allergic to latex (and I know I'm not because I wear latex gloves all the time with no problems) can I eat avocados or will they cause me to develop an allergy?
I'm trying to understand why they're proscribed for people who are not allergic to them.

Avocados have some wonderful properties including having an abundance of enzymes and minerals. I would not eat any food daily as this could be problematic. Just learning about rotation and variety so that's my focus lately. A lot of food sensitivity issues can apparently be resolved by spacing foods out. A problem for many who switch to gluten free diets is many consume rice daily and develop issues with it as well. I have heard chitinase mentioned with regard to rice as well.
4 day food family rotations are being mentioned in what I am reading. Feeling better already.
