Well, as I posted about in Little Fishes, I have really wandered off the diet reservation recently, but as of my True Confessions post to y'all last night, I'm really trying to get back to basics.  And one thing I really need to do is back waaaaaaaay off (preferably TOTALLY off, of course) my Kettle Spicy Thai Chips.  Once I start getting into the chips again, it is usually fairly predictable that I will begin a slow decline into getting totally off-kilter, as has happened in this case, when I find myself eating more and more spicy Thai's and fewer and fewer VEGGIES and FRUITS.

Of course, the ideal chip alternative is veggies and fruits, and the preventive vaccine for "chipping" is to PLAN and PREPARE by cooking up superfoods like green beans, etc., and storing them in the fridge to whip out at a moment's notice to take to work for lunch, etc.  But, failing the ideal, as I so often do, one wants something crunchy and salty to have with one's protein at lunch, so what can one grab and go with FAR less worry and guilt?

I discovered something today at the HFS and just have to tell you peeps about it!  It is called Sami's millet (superfood!) and flax (superfood) garlic (superfood!  ...or is it?  I'll have to look that one up...if it isn't, it should be *lol*) chips.  These millet and flax garlic chips contain:

millet flour, brown rice flour, ground flax, sea salt, olive oil, non-aluminum baking powder, water and garlic.  That is at least four G2 superfoods (and maybe five *lol*) that I count in there, as opposed to mostly TTAs in my beloved potato chips of all varieties.  Plus these are MUCH lower in fat and higher in fiber.

They are EXTREMLY garlicy--man!  They have a ton of garlic on them.  So don't plan on serving these on a date, but other than that, I thought I would rush to report this diet-saving find to any fellow chip/crunch/salty-carb lover out there who, even though you may not have planned and prepared for the ideal (veggies and/or fruit), at least wants to reach for something compliant, with superfoods in it, that is relatively low in fat and high in fiber, to have as a convenient lunchy-type thing with items like tuna salad (which is what I had it with today.

Yet another Sami's product that I am loving!  I also love and have reported on their millet & flax bread.  I'm 2 for 3 on loving what I've tried of theirs.  Tried a wheat-free cookie that was hideous, though.  Tasted like talcum powder with sugar and chocolate added.  Not good!  But their millet & flax bread, and also these fantabulous millet & flax garlic chips are really diet savers!!!  I'm all about things that are convenient and help me stay on track, or get back on track, as the case may be.

thanks for this tip. I am going to call them today for delivery! I have to place a $25 dollar or more order for delivery, but I will do it! I've browsed their site before per your mention of them, and figure 2 loaves bread, 2 bags chips, 2 bags of flatbread and we're almost there! yum! ;D

Yeah, good point, I'm glad you mentioned that, Vicki.  I do notice and meant to mention that, on the bag of these millet & flax chips, it does say (and I am copying this verbatim, complete with weird capitalization and lack of hyphenation):

"Processed in a non Gluten free facility.  May contain traces of Gluten, Wheat or Yeast."

You would think they would have seperate processing machines and areas for their wheat-free stuff, but I guess that would be quite expensive.  Still, with many celiacs and other wheat-intolerant types turning to their products, you'd think they'd want the selling point of being able to broadcast "gluten-free!" on the label.  That said, I'm just glad they have these products such as breads, pita chips, pizza crusts and cookies that are alternatives to wheat.  Celiacs should proceed with extreme caution, if at all.  But for non-celiacs who are just trying to avoid wheat...well, also proceed with caution, of course, because, as Dr. D. always says, "your mileage will vary", but the likelihood is that any gluten or lectin that is in there is truly just a trace.

Hmmm Twisty, crunchy and salty seems to be one of your triggers. Are you sure you even want a crunch/salty sub? Well maybe dryroasted salty nuts.

:o What?  $35.00 for shipping?  Are they tripping?  That is wack.  Utterly wack!  ...Wack, I tells ya.  I don't blame you for saying fuggedaboutit.  Maybe you can find somewhere that sells it locally.  If not, if you have a WF near you, I'm sure you have loads of other bread choices and other alternative-to-wheat products.  Much as I appreciate the Sami's items, I wouldn't pay $35.00 in shipping for them.

What?  Baking powder often has corn starch in it?  Hmmmm...I would assume (maybe wrongly) that they would have listed corn starch if it were in there...right?

An emphatic YES to that Q!  Because if I don't have a sub, I invariably meander back to the real thing (CHIPS!) when the going gets tough.  I can go a pretty long spell doing veggies and fruits like I should, but theeeeeen...along comes a big dose of STRESS and darned if that chip aisle doesn't suddenly start singing her siren song!  My point?  Veggie/fruit is better for me, choice-wise, than crunchy/salty carb, yet IF I'm going to go the not-so-great-choice route, isn't it better to go the far-better-choice-among-the-not-so-great-choices route?  (*Whew:  that was a lot of hyphens...good thing I didn't throw in "and-contains-some-superfoods-among-the-ingredients" *LOL*).

MEANWHILE, back at the inn, I have made the purchase of two bags of basmati rice, as before my recent Avoid Bender, I had gotten into basmati rice and was thrilled with it.  If I cook up a batch of that and have portions of it instead of anything of a chip nature (real or alternative), that is a better choice...still not as ideal as veggies or fruits, but it is yet another rung up the ladder.

It is all about relativeness and choices, baby.  And sustainability.  And balance.  See, that's the thing:  diet is a COMPLEX animal.  Such a balancing act.  Sometimes, one falls off the beam.  The trick is to get back up on the dad-blained thing, keep on going, stick the landing at the end, and flash the judges a confident smile!

But the short answer to your Q is:  HECK YEAH, I'M SURE!   ;D

I've searched the web and there is nothing as good as sami's millet-flax bread as a product that would be good for a gatherer, and I understand their problem, I guess they have to mail them frozen and it takes 3 days to get here, etc. Ah, well, lucky you guys! (I use a spelt bread or sometimes a rice millet bread but they aren't quite as compliant)

I don't think they would have to mail it frozen, because that is the thing that I am so thrilled about with it:  it is SHELF STABLE bread!  I keep mine in the fridge once opened, but I'm sure that the loaves sit on the shelf in the HFS for 3 or more days sometimes before purchase...I mean, I just made that up, but it sounds very plausible to moi!

I blame the rise in oil prices.  And, by default, my fave person to blame for EVERYTHING:  shrub!  It is shrub's fault that you can't get your Sami's bread!  Because I don't think it is Reagan's fault.  And everything is the fault of either one or the other, so it must be shrub!

Hey Cinnamon Girl, what'dya do with Peppermint Twist?  Hang her up by the toenails & leave her out to dry?  Kidnapped?  Assassinate?  :o

For your humble consideration: what if you're really craving fat?  If so, no crunchy, salty chippy thing will work (long-term) unless it also has lots of fat.  What about crackers made with gobs of ghee?  Boatloads of butter?  Drenched in olive oil?  ;D  Now that's yum.....

I actually went to Sami's Bakery two days ago in Tampa, FL.  We were down there for vacation and it is 5 minutes from Busch Gardens.  I purchased 3 loaves of the millet/rice/flax bread, 2 loaves of the Millet Banana Walnut bread and three packages of the plain millet/flax chips.  I ate one piece of the millet/rice/flax bread right there to determine if I wanted to bother carrying it back on the plane with me and yes it is to die for after not having bread since Jan. 1st!!  I did't have any adverse reactions that day to the bread (I am a Hunter).  

The bread was kept in a refrigerator unit at the bakery, the chips were not.  When I returned to the hotel, I requested a refrigerator and kept it there until our flight this morning.

It is a small bakery in a little plaza and the man I spoke to was very nice and helpful.  It is definitely a small operation from what I could see.  I asked about their shipping procedures and he said that they will ship out the bread freshly baked, but that there is a $75 minimum order.

When I got home the first thing I did was make a piece of toast/ghee - heaven!  I am going to watch myself as I try the products over the next few days, because it isn't baked in a gluten-free area and because of the corn in the baking soda issue. I had no problem after eating the piece at the bakery though and so far no problem today from the toast.  I don't believe I am celiac but I am very gluten intolerant.

I also have to watch myself for additiveness.  After having one piece of bread, if I start to think about it and dream about having more, then I know (for me) it isn't something I shouldn't be eating.

I haven't had the millet/banana/nut bread or chips yet.  I want to detox from eating away from home for 5 days so I know what is what.

Froze all the bread into 4 slice packets as soon as I got home.  I left out some to try in the next few days.

I keep thinking that it is too good to be true - how can it not have yeast or xanthan gum in it and have the light bread texture that it does?? I didn't ask and I probably should have, but maybe I didn't want to know :-/ :o (drool)  Also it was about 7pm and we were all very tired from a day at Busch gardens. I would have liked to look around more but had 4 other tired people to think of.

Well... I've  had these.  I bought 4 bags of the crackers and lost my mind because they were so good and seemed to be good for me.  It was before I found out I was a Hunter.

But I do have an horrid addictive issues with salty and crunchy.  I can't stop.  And if I do have a day where I can stop, then knowing they are in the cupboard begins to haunt me and at my first sign of wanting to chew (and not out of hunger); I grabbed these things and ate them all.  

Talk about tummy ache.  So I have to ban these delicious things from my house because of the addictive quality they have for me.

Millet is another one.  If I make a batch, I end up eating it all if I get a weak moment with ghee and agave.

funkymuse - I hear ya!  That is exactly what I am watching for.  So far so good - but I am going slowly.   Earlier in this thread the garlic ones were mentioned and I find that the spice mixes aren't good for me, so I stay with plain.  Crunchy salty chips have always been what I crave and miss.

With cooked millet so far I have been okay.  I enjoy it alot and it doesn't seem to have the addictiveness of wheat for me.  I just made it for the first time the other day - more for my husband (Gatherer) because it is a weight loss food for him, but I was pleasantly surprised by it and we both enjoyed it.  That is the only grain besides basmati rice that I have eaten with no problem so far as a hunter.  I tried job's tears, but something didn't agree with me there.

Yah.. I don't have trouble with Millet as far as a wheat reaction... the problem I have with it, is that I could eat the entire pot and not stop.

Certain things in life, I have to steer clear of.  I think it's old food comfort roots from when I was a kid.

And Millet reminds me of cornmeal and so I go hog wild!  I cannot eat corn tortilias either because once again, I cannot stop.

Taco's... I'd eat 10 and want to keep going..

Chips and crackers of any sort are a complete danger for me.  I could eat them until I was sick which is what I did with the Sammi crackers.

So it's sad, but I'm certainly not what would be called a normal eater.

If I eat a trigger food - even a compliant one, I end up shooting myself in the gut.  Literally... because I cannot stop eating it.

Magic Shell......that stuff is my ultimate weakness.  I can't have it anywhere in my house or I will gain like 15 pounds in no time flat cuz I have to use Ice-Cream with it (just looking at ice-cream a flat 10 pounds leaps to my stomach) :o......then with the Magic Shell, it's all downhill from there. :-/

Alright, about these "chips".  You listed the second ingredient as Brown Rice Flour.  Is that not an Avoid for the Gatherer? ??)  I just remember looking at the list and getting ticked (yes, I know) about seeing white and brown rice on that list as yet again, I have had the knack as of late of spending $$$ on the wrong foods. :'(  Ah.....the life of converting. ::)

Yes, they are avoid for Gatherer's - my husband is not going to be eating the bread or the chips for that very reason.  He is a sweet tooth person and doesn't miss bread or chips the way I do.  Having reached his goal weight and not really having any major (Thank you Lord!) health issues, he is now learning the "maintenance" life.  He has to watch the ice cream, cookies, etc.

This is why I told them at the bakery that I was buying this loaf of bread and I ate one slice before buying more and carrying them on the plane!  I have spent alot of money on products not quite compliant or just downright nasty tasting.

I did eat 1 of the chips with my snack last night before bed and it was yummy and crunchy, not overly salty.  This morning I am actually 1.5 pounds lighter than when I left for Tampa (dance) - is this not the best way of life????

Also, I was blessed that at our hotel the first night our waiter could pick out food for me from the menu because his wife was celiac, he also knew about Sami's Bakery products when I asked him.  We went to that restaurant a few times!

A quick salty funnel cake/chip type snack food:

stir some white rice flour with water and salt - not too thick or thin...once it is thick just add a bit more water to make it more pourable.

Heat a pan with lots of ghee- maybe 1/4" deep.  Once the pan is hot, drop spoonfuls of the rice mixture into the pan.  Flip, with tongs, as desired.  I don't think I flipped mine.  

Try making with other spices, too.

Yumm!  You could try this with other flours, but I haven't tried yet. Any fine ground flour may work well - like teff, for instance.

Hey, I used to do that too.  I would make a sweet/cinnamony biscuit batter (I'd use a fluffing agent like baking soda and lemon juice) and drop it into hot oil and let it get slightly crunchy.  They were like fried donuts.

Hi Vicki!

Thanks for the recipe - it sounds yummy and will definitely satisfy the crunch factor.  Actually it sounds very close to the tempura batter recipe which usually uses rice flour.  It could definitely be made with a sprinkling a salt for me and some agave for my husband.

Wow!  How funny that you are in Niagra Falls and have been to Sami's Bakery in Tampa, and I'm "next door" to Tampa, in St. Petersburg, yet have never been.  Yet I am so lucky that my HFS here stocks many Sami's products.  I have been known to pine for a Whole Foods here, but this is one case of my HFS having something that WF doesn't have, so HA/yay!  Plus my HFS has expanded into something WONDERFUL and you don't hear me pining much for WF anymore, although I would be THRILLED to see one come to town, don't get me wrong.  The Sami's products are so great for an O nonnie Gatherer like me.  I can make sandwiches!  SANDWICHES, I tell you!  And now these millet & flax chip items?  Fuggedaboutit, I can now avoid potato chips when I get the jones for something of a chip nature!  And millet and flax are both superfoods for me.  Oh joy, oh rapture!

Didn't know they had millet-banana-walnut bread!  Hmmm...  I did try something I should have, on account of it has SUGAR in it, namely the CINNAMON millet and flax chips.  TOO good!  I might have to stay out of those, as in, don't buy them again.  I kinda sorta ate the ENTIRE BAG.  Oh yeah, babe.  I'd better stick to the savory garlic ones.

I'm exactly the same way, not celiac (at least, I don't think I am...I'm sure as HECK not going to do that test wherein you have to gorge yourself with wheat for six weeks or something...color me OUTTA THERE!) but since going on the BTD years ago, I realized, omg, I'm really gluten intolerant, who knew?  So far, I haven't had any wheat-type reactions to their products, even though they are processed on equipment that also processes wheat.

Cinnamon Girl - Ah - Someone who understands my enthusiam at having a piece of toast!!  LOL

Funny how the little things (like a bit of crunch) can bring such joy! I share your happiness at having a sandwich, I had one too.

I had no problems at all from any of the products that I purchased, but have decided to try to only have them every third or fourth day, because having a compliant bread in the house is so convenient that I found that I was becoming lazy and not cooking up sweet potato, rice or millet as often.  So while I don't think that I get addicted to eating it - I do get addicted to the convenience.

My Gatherer husband (lost 30 pounds) and loves the millet/banana/walnut (I know that the banana is an avoid for him, but he takes a few liberties now).

I also was a potato chipaholic and so I hear you on the crackers.

As a Gatherer, what do you consider Millet flour to be?  Millet is listed as a Diamond Food, but I didn't see a listing for Millet flour although there are many flours listed. We are assuming it is a Superfood.

I wish there was a Whole Foods in our area, I can get alot of products at our two major supermarkets, but for health food items I have to make a 25 minute drive to a locally owned health food store.  They do an excellent job there, but of course they don't carry Sami's Bread.
