I am thinking that after some period of time I need to evaluate the Explorer diet (Currently I am thinking at 3 months and again at 6 months) to determine if I should continue with it.

This is still more than a month away, but I wanted to define the measuring criteria in advance.

The problem is I do not know how to evaluate a diet.

If I was dieting to loose weight I could obviously look at pounds lost in a period of time.

But I have no interest in weight loss. I want to maximize logevity and improve my state of health/wellbeing in the years that I do have. I cannot think of a reliable method to measure or predict this.

I am sort of left with "do I feel better on the diet." This very subjective and I am not sure how strongly it is related to future health outcomes.

Anyone have good ideas of what to use for diet assessment measures.

Unless you have a specific goal to quantitate against it will be subjective by default. Choosing a time frame is also problematic as some things require more time than others, in some cases many months or longer, as well as being unable to identify correctly some changes as they occur.

I would suggest keeping a diary and noting weekly changes. After doing that for a period of time you should have a better idea.

Is your mind clearer? Do you get more done? Is your sleep better? Is your appetite more normal? Can you adjust to changes? Do you 'feel better?' Do you crave healthier food?
Do others see positive changes in your life/health?
Maybe you will feel worse as you detox. I bet someone from the clinic may give a good answer.

This is a great question. Something I've been wondering about for a long time now. Last October, I went for a first-time "live blood cell analysis" which showed me various things positive and negative that were happening in my body. For example, I was told that my absorption was very good but that I may have some adrenal stress and heavy metal toxicity. There were a whole lot of other health issues marked as well, including cancer, so I got quite a detailed picture of what was going on in there. If I went by how I felt alone, I would never know any of this, my body doesn't give me any signs (that I'm aware of). Now, I'm not totally sure how accurate or reliable the readings are from a live blood sample (there are mixed reviews about them), but I thought that at least I could try eating differently for awhile and then go back for another analysis to see what has changed, if anything. The person who gave the analysis was also the person who recommended me to the BTD, so that's when my diet changed. I thought that I'd give it a good year before going back for another one. I will return to the same person who tested me originally but at the same time, will also get tested from someone else. That should help me decide whether or not the test is reliable information for me.

Lloyd's advice is wonderful.  

I am thinking that this may be too soon to do a realistic evaluation.  I have been going through major adjustments in changing to the GTD, and if I had judged the results prematurely, I would have bailed out too soon.  This morning, I woke up and KNEW that I had moved through a major transition time with this diet, and I feel incredible.  But the adjustment has been confusing.  If I had not already been through something similiar with the BTD, I might have mistakenly thought that the process was a negative one.

Do you have specific health issues that you are hoping to see changes in.  Maybe some specific things that you could watch for comparison?  I still think that months may be needed before really giving too much weight to how you feel right at this time.

This may be a good example of how Explorers are medical enigma's, even to themselves. May be why both on the thread so far are searching for something to measure by other than how we feel, which is probably not as reliable a method for us as it is for others. There are no changes in my sleeping patterns or energy levels before or during BTD/GTD. The only change I have noticed on both diets is that I am not as hungry as I used to be (this only happens with a consistent high level of compliancy). What this says as a health measurement, I don't know, but my guess is that my body is getting what it needs when that level is reached. Now to find out if that's true...
