The title says it all...

I just discovered that, when Dr. D says that Hunters should take between 200-400 mg of Holy Basil a day, he really means it.

I bought a New Chapter form of Holy Basil in which one pill contains 450 mg and, boy howdy, have I been getting wicked awful stiff, painful necks.  But, thankfully, the Chinese Skullcap brought down the inflammation.

You got that right.  It felt like my head was going to break off of my neck...

I got some that is 450 mg/capsule also.  The "serving size" is 900 mg.  I'm so glad that I instinctively knew to only take one.  I take it and then go to bed about an hour later.  I'm a Teacher and it isn't listed in the supplements with a mg guideline.  Holy basil is listed under Condiments and Additives for Teachers, portion size being "1 teaspoon".  :-)

Ha Ha!!!! When I read this thread first thing in the morning I thought it said "Too Much Holy Basil Gives Me Necklaces" Geez... I thought... did he get a rash around his neck?... what an interesting way of saying that...  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Anyway... just thought I'd share...  :)

As you were...

Ron,
I use the Gaia brand full spectrum standardized.  I like their company and their products.

2 capsules has a total of 300 mg.

They  also have a liquid product that is not standardized, which does not list potency per dose.  The company would most likely be able to tell you what the strength of the tincture is.

Try their website.  CLICK

Ron-O-Non, I'm sorry you have been in pain.  I hope the Chinese Skullcap will keep working until it's completely gone.

I am so thankful you posted your symptom and observation.  I am experiencing the exact same thing but I hadn't made the connection!  My neck has been hurting so much since last week (I now realize since I started taking Holy Basil) that just tonight I told my husband I was going to have to purchase some Tylenol.  I haven't taken any pain medication in about 10 years, so when I said that my husband just about fell over.
I was blaming the inflammation on some potatoes I had on New Year's Eve but it was just not going away.

I just checked my bottle of Solaray Holy Basil and the dosage is 900 mg. in 2 caps.  The first time I took it I had two caps.  The other times it was just one cap.

I've been using rhodiola up till now for stress management and it worked really well, but when I saw Holy Basil listed first in the GenoType book for hunters and stress, I thought I would experiment a little.  Needless to say, I'm going back to rhodiola.

I picked up a bottle just today, the suggested dose is 1,350mg. LOL

That's for three pills, meaning each is 450mg. Better. I might do that or repack the pills in 'halves'.

Well, in all fairness, Dr. D does specify that the dosage for Holy Basil should be 200-400 mg.  So, with you taking 900 mg, or even just one cap at 450 mg, you're actually exceeding the dosage he's listed.

Maybe you should stay off it for a week or so, and then go back and take just the mininum suggested dosage of 200 mg.  Of course, that means you'll have to buy a different formulation from your health food store, but I would honestly see if you can't return what you have been using, and see if you can't get the right dosage instead.

Yeah... I think this is pretty powerful stuff.  I'm going to lay off for a week or so, and then try going back at the bare minimum dosage that Dr. D suggests, of just 200 mg.

Well, I'm thinking Holy Basil may not be for me.  Since I know the rhodiola worked for me I'll stick with that.  But please report back if you try it again after a break.  I would be interested to hear how you do with it the second time.

You could try holy basil as a tea. I have it occasionally and like it (no side effects).

Thanks Curious, that would be a good way to water it down at first and then build up to a stronger dose.

Well, I had been previously taking a weaker form of Holy Basil and actually feeling very good on it but, in an ill-informed zeal to gain the "most bang for my buck", I went out and bought a higher-dosage for the money, and ultimately got way too much bang for my buck.

It seems like you are back on track, Ron.

I guess we learned the hard way that more isn't always better!  :-/

I don't think there is a danger of over-dosing by drinking the tea.

Yes, I think if I ever get brave enough to try it again, it will be in the tea form.

I've been trying to find lower doses of holy basil, with no success.
Posted by: Lloyd, Monday, January 14, 2008, 4:44pm; Reply: 20
I've been opening the capsules (450mg) and dividing in half. Also, I have found that taking it on an empty stomach gives too big/fast a response, am now adding it to my biggest meal. Will see how that goes or may reduce dosage again if need be.

Lloyd,

I might try that, but I wonder if the taste is pretty nasty.

Ron, if you're that sensitive to it at this time, it could be good for you to experiment with the Tulsi teas.  Our natural food stores carry a couple of brands with Tulsi.  Also, I buy tulsi herb in bulk and use it in foods that would call for basil as an ingredient.

What's tulsi?  I've never heard of it before...

I bought some bulk holy basil from Mountain Rose Herb and put it in capsules.  My hunter hubby was kind of stressed and I wanted to see if it helped me sleep through the night.  My husband woke up moaning about his neck and I had weird disturbing psychedelic dreams and felt kind of sluggish all day.

Anyone figure out what the neck pain is all about?  Anyone else have wild dreams? Are these cleansing symptoms, overdose symptoms or what?

I haven't had any trouble taking 450 mg.  I only take it occasionally but even when I took it three nights in a row, no trouble.

It does make me sleepy.

Is the pain you feel at the base of the skull or in the neck?  I wonder if it makes you sleep in a more "unconscious" state, similar to being passed out from alcohol, and then you sleep "wrong" and don't move around enough to keep your neck from getting sore.

If it is pain at the base of the skull, then I'd be more concerned about an internal reaction to the herb.

Try it as tea instead of taking it in capsule form!  Much more mild.

Thanks for the food for thought. I will try it as a tea if I get brave enough to take it again.  :)
