I recently read this in one of Dr. D's old blog's entitled "Undeniable Truth".  Now I can finally start putting this to work!  I've been working off of a copy of the BTD Encyclopedia, which I had notated and updated to reflect the newer food values found in Typebase4, but this book doesn't say how much of each food type I should be getting.  My copy of LR4YT finally showed up this week, and put me on notice that some changes were in order. :o

Let me back up a step.  When I first started BTD, I first eliminated the avoids, and after some adjustment to that change, I started introducing more beneficials.  I saw some marvelous improvements as a result!  But recently, I feel like I have been backsliding.  Now I know why: I haven't been eating the right amounts.  I've been eating way too much meat and dairy, and not enough fish, beans, or vegetables.  It all makes sense now: before BTD, I wasn't eating enough protein, so all the extra from the "too much" meat I'd been eating was a welcome catch-up, but I suspect now that I've got too much polyamine built up for my own good.

Ok, enough of me rambling.  Moral of the story is, follow the portion guidelines! ;)

I agree that following the amounts is the way to optimal health; however, I need about 2700 calories each day.  For me the food frequencies and portion sizes are important, but I tend to up them all a bit since I need so many calories.  I suppose if I were trying to overcome disease instead of being generally healthy, I would mainly up the beneficial vegetables since they are rated as unlimited.

That sounds smart.  If you want to increase calories, you have to eat more, and if you are staying in the recommended ratios, that is probably just fine.

As wide a range as the recommedations have, they still don't handle people on the outliers - very big, very active - all that well. Kind of a one-size-fits all problem which is a bit ironic.

You are correct to modify your portion sizes upward perhaps 20% from the maximums suggested. At such time as you have a SWAMI run (if you ever do) the portion sizes would be individualized to fit your size and activity.

I use the portion as well- but with a few personal changes...
Like I eat more eggs, since I donīt eat all the fish .

However I have noticed one thing....:

There is a difference between ERT and LRT regarding dairy
In ERT you get both a milk frequency and yoghurt frequency = far more dairy pr week = more normal amounts
In the LRT that only has 3-4 serving of milk AND yoghurt !!!  pr week.

Now for a long time I tried to follow LRT - but I always went over... and felt guilty ...
Now I use the milk AND yoghurt rating in ERT and I almost stay around that level.
AND I feel great - being of North European/ Scandinavian heritage I do extremely well on dairy and I need some very day to feel fine.

The beansdepartment is a compleetely different story :(.......

lol, Notwithstanding the portion recommendations, I still plan to more than recommended, but I was eating 3-4 times as much as LR4YT recommends!

I just so happen to be cooking a big pot right now.  One lb. great northern beans (dried), one c. pearled barley, 1/3 c. honey, 1/3 c. olive oil, 1 tsp. garlic salt, 1/4 tsp. ground cayenne pepper, 1/2 tsp. oregano, one c. onion/pepper mix (frozen), LOTS of water.  It's smelling very nice right about now, I just hope it tastes as good as it smells! ;)

Edit: the beans are done now, and they are deelishus!

drive55 - I might try that -sounds good.
I like beans in small amounts but really not in that crazy  :o amount in LRT- must be my scandinavian upbringing with very little beans:
green beans and fresh peas in the summer- dry spilt peas- maybe white beans in the winter.. ;D

Yeah, I understand about the beans.  I don't know if it's even possible to eat that much, unless you want to be a hermit. :D  One cup of dry beans goes a long long way!

Well, here's what I like about breastfeeding a gigantic baby:  I can ignore portion suggestions, eat huge amounts of food, often, and still loose weight.   ;D

About the beans
I think a while ago we ( Bīs on the board) decided it should be read 1 cup cooked beans...Or all the Bīs would have to live like hermits.... ;D

That's much more sensible.  This possibility has crossed my mind too, so I will assume this is a misprint.  I would be hard-pressed to eat that much beanage, even if it is 1 cup cooked!

how much beans should we be getting anyways?
i usually eat like 1/3 cup of cooked navy beans 3-4 times a week... they are very filling!

it says 5-7 servings pr week for secretor and 3-5 servings pr week for nons
