After getting my secretor test results I know some of the things now that I am not supposed to eat it is going to be hard for me to be 100% compliant to this diet. I have cut out a great deal like wheat, bread, white potatoes, beer, air popped popcorn to name a few of what I used to eat. Some things it may take me awhile. I was a 2 cup of coffee a day person and now have switched to green tea which I love but I cant drink it right now w/out sweetner and Stevia is an avoid...UGGGG. Now I cant have soy milk :(
Maybe I will just be fluffy for the rest of my life but with clearer skin due to cutting out all the wheat in my diet :(
Just a little discouraged today is all. I had a lunch and breakfast today that was good for me except for the Stevia in my tea ..GRRRR.
Does anyone follow it 100%? If I wasnt 100% compliant to this and took my delfect would I be alright?

UGGG this is harder than I thought and its only been since Sept-06 that I have been on this. How could I make it 10 years like some have on this board.

I want to get some of this weight off (30 lbs) and where I work we have a gym and I either take the classes offered or walk on the treadmill for 30 mins. Maybe I am just destined to be fluffy.
I know when I exercise I feel better about myself. I am trying to be very compliant with this but it is not easy at first.

Yep, thats all you can do. I have made a lot of small changes. Now that I see what cutting out wheat has done..no more of that for me. I think I can live w/out gluten free bread and soymilk.

I use vegetable gycerine instead of sugar or stevia because it is harmless apparently, and still gives you the sweetness that you crave.good luck.

Dear Stephanie, take deep breath, relax, and get used to the idea, that you have to make new adjustments. You did a great job so far - well done! (clap)

All you can do is do your best. BTD is a life style. It's supposed to be a freeing and healthy life style - not a prison sentense. ;) ;D

You as a nonnie, however, maybe have to watch your life style a little more closely.
See that as a strength in stead of a weakness. You have knowledge! Knowledge is power!

My compliance runs about 75-85%, a bit higher on some days, but very rarely lower. I've regained a significant percentage of my health, as well as lost weight very slowly but steadily at this rate, which suits me just fine. 100% compliance makes me too sensitive to avoid ingredients; however, if my health were to bottom out or my FMS got worse, I'd definitely up my compliance rate to as close to 100% as possible. Different strokes for different folks! :)

As for sweeteners, I use agave nectar in most recipes and to sweeten my tea. For recipes that require crystalline sweetener to work properly, organic evaporated cane juice is a good replacement for commercial sugar. You can mix a bit of organic molasses into it to make your own brown sugar too.

Yes, I'm another 100% compliant person.  But it took me a few years to get to this point.  Don't judge yourself too harshly.  You have begun to improve your health and the more you eat this way, the more your cravings will change.  It does get easier.

If you can at least eliminate all the red flag foods for your blood type, that will be a great thing.  And make an effort to have something beneficial with every meal.  They are like tonics for us.

I do not have WFs so I need to focus on my cooking from scratch every time!

We can also use agave nectar in your green tea.  

I use rice milk, and yes, I do buy it sometimes even though it has an avoid oil, otherwise I use the soymilk I have around for my As on the busy days.

I'm not very close to 100%, but there are certain avoids I really have to avoid, like all dairy (except ghee), soy, corn, and of course wheat/gluten.  Beyond that, I try to focus on adding in beneficials.

Hang in there Sassy.  Soy milk and apples were hard to say good bye to...I just loved them.  Agave nectar or Xylitol are both good to sweeten your tea.  If you are missing potatos, sweet potatos are absolutely wonderful.  I make hashbrown, mashed and french fries out of them.  Some onion and black pepper and a touch of garlic are fantastic spices for them.  

Please remember that it will be much easier if you make small steps.  I would be most worried about wheat and corn.  If you try to be 100% compliant from Day 1, you will find yourself looking at all the "can't haves" and missing out on just feeling great by the ones you have already removed.

Also, if you are trying to lose weight I would suggest weight training.  This increases the amount of muscle in your body which helps greatly in burning fat.

We all have found our own way to get there, and are more than happy to see you succeed!! ;D

Ok so I am a an O-non secretor and apples dont bother me. Does that mean I can eat them?
So far wheat and dairy that are avoids for me really aggravated my system. I dont have the muscle pain or inflammation that has been talked about.

Sweetie, let me let you in on a little secret, speaking as someone who has been following the BTD for ten years:  no one is perfect.  There are a few shining souls on this board who strive for and often acheive 100% compliance but most of us do not, even though we may acknowledge that it is the ideal.  I have, in my ten years on this thaaaaang, had times when I've been doing very well with the diet, times when I've been struggling, and times when I've just plain been off the rails.  Right now I'm doing splendidly, really wonderfully, but am I 100% compliant?  No.  I do try to be on certain foods that I know are big avoids for me:  wheat, corn syrup, coffee.  While I have been 100% compliant on all three of those for quite a while now, wheat is the A-Number One BIGGIE-Big Avoid for me.  I think that, over time, you learn which avoids are the main ones you need to avoid and which may be more minor for you.  While full, 100% compliance is the ideal, ideals are very difficult to put into practice 100% of the time for a lifetime, and this diet is meant to be a sustainable way of life for your health.  I am super compliant on wheat and corn syrup, for example, and not so compliant on other things, like lately I'm suddenly on a Golden Delicious Apple kick.  It has actually been good because I've been tending to have a cut-up apple when otherwise I might have had CHIPS of some kind.  Like today for brunch (I've just had the one meal thus far, so call it brunch), I had curried-apple-walnut chicken salad from the HFS, to which I added some of my own organic raisins (they never have enough in there), some pesto sauce (this made the dish--lately I put pesto in EVERYTHING and it ALWAYS makes the dish!) and a cut-up Golden Delicious apple.  "FABBYDOO!", as a dear bud of mine used to say.  Adding a crisp, delicious, nutritious apple, in my opinion, was far better than adding Kettle Chips or Blue Corn Tortilla Chips or anything else that I might have added during my not-very-distant-yet latest "struggling on the diet" period.  Now, I could have made it compliant by using a pear instead of an apple but, like I said, lately I'm on a golden delicious kick.  So sue me.

This diet is something you get to know.  It is something you customize over time for yourself, including your compliance level overall and your compliance level with certain foods.  Again, I may be 100% compliant with wheat, yet I may choose to allow myself to eat cinnamon.

I do think it is good for newbies to be as highly compliant as they can at first, so that they can establish a "baseline", establish what it truly feels like to feel GOOD.  Then you can experiment with adding in a certain avoid here and there and see what, if anything, it does to you.  It is a learning process.  You see:  "Oh, I never noticed before the BTD, but when I eat X, Y happens!  Every time!"  Y might be something good ("When I eat beef, I feel energized!") or something bad ("When I eat wheat, I want to mow down everyone in my path!"), depending on if we are talking about a beneficial or an avoid.  So you learn over time what you as a unique individual should or shouldn't be eating, and of the "shouldn't"s, which ones you could maybe sneak in here and there as a treat or as a "well, this apple isn't as bad as a bag of Kettle Chips" type of variety-giver to your diet.

I follow the BTD.  But I don't follow it perfectly.  I'm human, and this diet, imho, says that it is OKAY to be human!  It's all up to you how you do it, kid.  So don't put all sorts of undue pressure on yourself to be "perfect", because, in my experience, that just leads to wanting to chuck the whole thing and give up.  It leads to an all or nothing mentality.  You feel you are either perfect or a total failure, with nothing in between.  When really, most of our diets fall somewhere onto the spectrum that is in between perfection and total "failure".  And that is fine!

Many avoids do not immediately show up as having negative reactions.  They are not like food allergies, where you see effects pretty quickly.  A long period of time eating avoids is generally building chronic disease that may not manifest for years.  By then it is too late to do a quick fix.  Serious diseases are not accidents, but are the result of something.

Well since I have cut out wheat I have noticed a change in my skin complexion so I am going to avoid wheat from here on out. Since my pregnancy in 2003 I havent been able to drink regular milk so I have avoided it since then. I do like soy milk though on occasion.
I prefer sweet potatoes to the white ones and I can eat the gluten free pasta if I am having a pasta craving.
I can do w/out pork to be honest so instead I will have turkey bacon.
Its taking small steps at a time to learn all this.
I also need to learn not to beat myself up if I go off of it for a meal or for a day. I just will keep my deflect handy on those days.

Victoria makes great points (as usual!), and I thought of saying in my post that, just because you don't notice any ill effects immediately from certain avoids, doesn't mean that the ideal isn't to avoid them.  Again, 100% compliance is the ideal.  But, for me anyway, it is extremely, EXTREMELY challenging to the point of being self-defeating to go for 100% compliance with all foods all the time.  I've learned over time which ones I really need to strive for ideal compliance with.  As Sassy already realizing that wheat is horrible for her illustrates, any O cutting wheat out of her/his diet for even a few days will very predictably experience such dramatic cause and effect between that action and feeling healthier than s/he will put that one together almost immediately.  But just because I don't NOTICE much of a reaction, or even any reaction, to eating certain avoids, doesn't mean it is the best choice for me to be eating them.  Ideally, I wouldn't be on my Golden Delicious kick, for example.  And there certainly are compliant fruits I could have instead in the example I gave above of what I had for lunch today.  But I guess for me--and this is just me--I've learned that sometimes variety, enjoyment and/or convenience trumps idealism in terms of sustaining a healthy diet.  If I make things too hard on myself, I'm setting myself up for failure.  Again, the Golden Delicious example isn't the best to make that argument, as how hard is it to choose compliant fruit instead?  But I'm ENJOYING the apples right now.  I haven't chosen to have apples in years and right now I am and I'm enjoying them.  I'll go back to more compliant choices soon.  You'll notice that the avoids I choose to indulge in have in common the quality of being pure, whole foods.  I virtually never, when doing well on the diet, indulge in any "junk".  Why?  Because that is dangerous territory for me.  It is addictive and it triggers blood sugar spikes/crashes and it can and usually will throw me right off track.  The only time I loosen up a little in that way is when my sister's family is in town and all they ever do is go out to eat to "American" type restaurants that I normally steer WAAAAY clear of.  Even then, it depends how I'm feeling and where I am with my diet as to how much, if at all, I will choose to loosen up.  One thing I have learned that has been hard-fought for me:  I don't have to let anyone else push me towards eating avoids I don't want to eat.  Oh, and they will try sometimes, Sassy.  That's a given.  Some folks are determined to get you to eat something you have indicated you don't wish to eat.  It's pathological with some people, I'm convinced of it.  I have co-workers like this.  But I don't have to give them my power, no matter WHAT they say or do.  On the flip side, if I WANT to CHOOSE to eat some avoid at some point, I try not to let anyone make me feel bad about that, either.  In short, I've learned that my diet is a very, very personal thing to me, and it is all about my choices.  No one else is living in my skin and knows all the complex reasoning that may go into why I choose to be highly compliant at a certain time or why I choose to indulge in a treat--even an unhealthy one--at another time.  Maybe I'm at Coney Island and I want to try a Nathan's hot dog:  how many chances will I get to do that?  I may decide to go for it.  Or maybe I'm at Coney Island and I decide I'd better not have a hot dog because of x, y and/or z reasons.  NO ONE can pressure me to have one if I don't choose to.

Diet is a very personal thing, I have come to see and understand.

But back to my original point in this particular post:  Victoria has an important point that, just because you may not notice a cause-and-effect between a certain avoid and your health, doesn't mean it is a good choice for you to eat that thing.  Another choice that is beneficial or neutral would be better.  But then again there could be a lot of avoids that are worse and maybe there are some points in favor of eating that particular avoid at that time.

What can be overwhelming to newbies (and oldbies!) is that there is so much personal choice and responsibility and POWER on this diet.  But that is the cool thing, too!  Again, try to do the best you can at first so that you know what it is like to truly experience glowing health.  Then you can "get jiggy with it" and see what shakes out.  But when I say "do the best you can", I don't mean "you have to be PERFECT".  Just do the best you can, and trust your choices.  If you stumble, we're here to help...and/or confuse you further *lol*!

Great post as always, PT.  It's a journey and we all have our particular paths.   I've noticed that even within our own bloodtypes, there are many differences in the way we eat.  I read Blogger Suzanne's comments about what she eats and what she feeds her family and it's so different from my choices even though we are both O's.
Just start by focusing on a few things - the major avoids like wheat and corn and stressing a few beneficials and see how it works for you.  It took me a long time to stop drinking coffee and occasionally I'll still have some.  I met a client for coffee on Saturday morning and I hadn't slept the night before (storms, power going on and off all night) and I just didn't feel like getting into why I just drink green tea.  One cup of black coffee didn't bother me.  
Slowly you'll learn the things that make the biggest difference to you.  It's a process!

That is strong Sassy!
I found chicory powder yesterday that makes up pretty much like coffee, especially when I disguise it with veg.glycerine and soy milk (ok for me).
When I had some kind of food allergy a year or so ago I kept a daily diary, jotting down all foods, and also the level of hives that were coming up each day. After a couple of months (yes) I discovered what the problem was. Sounds fussy, but when you are desperate it really helps. So if you were to do this, and enter all Avoids as they pop into your mouth, and also enter reactions, immediately and over time, it might help support your resolve.
Peppermint, I also love golden delicious---not quite as sweet as some modern red apples, but so crisp! I always choose them, and if I plant an apple tree it would be that.

Sassy, I was thinking about you just now.  I'm eating lunch and I had just grabbed something at the HFS on my lunch break after getting gas in the car.  My nemesis is chips and anything chip-like.  Lately, I've been doing really well at choosing vegetables such as salad greens, veggie soups, broccoli florets, etc., or fruits instead of chips.  Anyway, today instead of a Golden Delicious, I got my first Macintosh apple in years and I am thoroughly enjoying re-experiencing their wonder.  I had totally forgotten how amazing a really good Macintosh apple is.  WOW.  I thought of you because, I was thinking:  I know it is an avoid and, as Victoria points out, avoids are avoids for reasons so ideally they all should be avoided 100% of the time, but in my opinion, not all avoids are created equal, just like not all individual humans are created to thrive on the same foods.  BTDers, of all people, understand that each food is "an individual", and you can't just lump "avoids" in as one lump group wherein each individual member is the same in degree of unhealthiness for you.  It would be better for me if I were on a compliant-fruit kick right now instead of an apple kick (I have been having beneficial and neutral fruits for my type, too, lately, such as pineapple, banana, etc., don't get me wrong, but I mean my apple kick is an "avoid kick" in the most literal sense), but:  isn't it far, far, far better that I'm choosing to grab a Macintosh apple with lunch instead of choosing to get my "crisp" fix by grabbing a bag of lectin-laden, high-glycemic, high-carb, high-fat (yet so delicious *lol*!) chips?

What I'm saying is, don't be too hard on yourself when you do the best you can.  Strive for the ideal when possible, but when faced with less than ideal choices, just make the best choice you can, and sometimes when you just plain want to choose a little less than ideally, that's okay, too...it is all about variety and sustainability over the long haul.  I feel good about my apple, especially when I think about some of the worse choices I could have made (organic apple versus potato chips...hmmmm, they don't seem identical in unhealthiness to this O nonnie!).  You are already making some really good changes.  Be proud of yourself!

Although I am a purist when it comes to my diet, I do really agree with you Twisty!  :K) All avoids are not equal, and some things are avoids for such reasons as {pepper contains mold, and cinnamon can irritate the digestive tract}  Everything is not about lectins.  And while I do my consistent best to never eat anything avoid, IF I were going to, I would choose an avoid fruit any day over a processed food, especially if it contained wheat or corn!

I just dont like avacados. I have tried them and just dont like them. There are a lot of beneficial veggies I dont like. I am such a picky eater(unhappy)
