I've been on the BTD for along time, but can't seem to kick the coffee addiction for good.  I get off of it for awhile, then back on, the cycle continues.

I know coffee is not good for us O's.

Can anyone please remind me of what it does to us, i know it has alot of acid that's not good for us.   Maybe i just need a good kick in the butt!.

yes and inflammation, which is also unnecessary.
may also trigger an insulin resistance in some and other nasty stuff......
I wish you all the courage you can have, to kick the habit asap!

Vrrroooommmm...run, run, run to the bathroom for me.  And afterwards, the inflammation and headache  :o  is not worth it...at all.    ::)   Green tea and rooibus tea have been my favourites ever since cutting it out.  :D  And the beloved mountain tea.  :K)

It burnt my stomach after about six months - I was overworking and thought I needed the coffee to stimulate me so I could do more - previously I had kicked it for six months - have now been off it about a week and already the digestive system is settling down - I do feel tired and look awful but that will pass so please give it a lot of thought before you start drinking it again - Good Luck

yes, coffee messes w/ the blood sugar. I was having a real issue w/ mine before I got off it.
speedy, your tiredness and 'look awful'ness  ;)  will pass. I had some   probs w/ that, but truthfully my tiredness was from my failing adrenals. Have you looked into the symptoms of that (adrenal fatigue) http://www.drlam.com/A3R_brief_in_doc_format/adrenal_fatigue.cfm#2

arose23...mountain tea is a wonderful tea that we first tried in Greece in May 2006 for the first BTD get together.  It is a great tasting tea that is nice and mild tasting with a bit of sweetness to it.  Makes you feel wonderful too.  Some of us brought some back and some had some shipped to us.  I found an unopened bag a few weeks ago in the back of my cupboard.  What a wonderful surprise.   :D  Click on google and you will get information on it arose23.  :D

Isa...that is great that you found a place to get it in Switzerland.  Enjoy roostersis.  Oh I like those heatbeats.  Get them from the green tea and the mountain tea.  mmmmmmm.  :)

I guess we all have to ask ourselves: Why?
I still drink coffee and I read the comment about inflamation and I guess I just conveniently forgot that detail. Adrenal fatigue hmmmm. How do I handle stress if my adrenal glands gave up the fight since I won't stop drinking coffee? My answer: Denial. I'm glad you asked for reminders. I'm going to look at the adrenal issue again. And I'm also wondering if aches and pains I've been feeling are more from coffee than from possible undeflected avoids like wheat that slipped through my diet latley. But back to Why? I really think the ritual of making it has more to do with my continued overindulgence. I don't know about you but it is a thing for me to grind and wait for the brew  and then enjoy it. That ritual alone somehow defines my persistance. I avoid pots at stores. I don't really enjoy restaurant "sock juice"very much. If I can't have organic fair trade I feel cheated and guilty. I suppose the mission is to some how replace the ritual with something more meaningfull. Not that my coffe ritual is all that meaningfull, but somehow in a busy day it helps to form a window through which to view things and I really feel coffee has become part of that step. I read a book called "The fruit palace" once and there was an interesting explaination somewhere in it about plant affinities and humans. It might be a stretch to include coffee but I don't think so. We can chose our allies from the plant and animal kingdoms in this world. These allies are ready and willing to help as much as they can. It's not their job to know when to stop. If one invites forces into ones life..... You must endevore to remain in control of your needs.

Without coffee (after withdrawal) I am peacefully active. With coffee I tend to be Type A personality; not nice for those around me. I am very much an O so if i add coffee... :B

I am planning to have my last coffee on Sunday. Saturday I start my holidays so if I feel sleepy I just find a good beach to have a little nap ;D

Isa, thanks for your report. It really motivated me to to know you will make 1 year in October 8) 8) 8). I well remember those first days/weeks. Thank you for pulling it through. :K) But I can not believe time has passed so fast.

How would you describe your difference? After all AB have a similar stress reaction to O's ;D Well you are Royal but after all a human ::) LOL!

What a great advice from all of you.  I had "kicked" the coffee habit for several months, but fell back into the habit a few weeks ago.  Taking several kids to college, staying  in hotels, visiting family, eating out a lot , having company ( the last of the company just left a few hours ago)  just set me over the edge!!!!!!!  I feel like I am on  major drugs right now.. I feel so bad... BUT!!   there is hope..... I feel like I can get back on track now and settle into my beloved BTD....I feel SO unhealthy right now.  I am vowing to myself NOT to  slip into this pattern again.. I am going to have to learn to stand up for myself when I'm on the road / have company/ out of my zone and just make the BTD happen.   I know I can do this.  It will just take a bit more thinking ahead and willpower.
So, I had coffee this morning,  with the dreaded sugar and milk.., but can anyone tell me the very best things I can do for myself the rest of the day to start back on tract FAST???  I do not have  deflect....

Hello everyone, I'm new to the Blood type diet and have just started this week. I'm happy to say that i feel better already. My main goal is to feel better for life but i'd also like to lose an extra 25 lbs that i've been carrying around for the past 10 years. So far, i'm down by three!

I've always exercised and have eaten chicken and veggies regularly...but prior to reading D'Adamo's books,  I also used to eat alot of whole wheat everything!!! I thought it was good for me but now i understand that it's a big no-no for 0's and that wheat glutens were the reason why i wasn't losing weight.  Eliminating the wheat is already making a world of difference. Thanks Dr. D'Adamo!

I do have a question however. .. from reading ER4YT and CR4YT, i can't seem to find out exactly what is wrong with coffee. I only drink a cup of decaf in the morning ( on an empty stomach) and one at night. I'm wondering what the problem is with increased levels of stomach acid because coffee doesn't seem to bother the way i feel. So I'd love to have a little more information to help me justify the elimination of coffee from my diet.  Does coffee perhaps interfere with my ablility to metabolize food, therefore slowing down weight loss?

Thanks for your help and for the wealth of important information around here.  :)

load up on the bennies.........beef, broccoli, bananas, plums, walnuts, etc.    If you have some green tea, have some of that.......no sugar and milk LOL  ;)  you might try a little agave nectar and soy milk.  I chose soy because unless you make your own, finding rice or almond milk w/o avoids is impossible.  :'(

I have to say you where one of my motivators a few weeks back... I guess it was more than 15 days ago LOL!

To answer your question: How did you do it before? You have done it already. There is no magic pill. Perhaps because of your compliance you are now feeling more the effects of the avoids and are feeling worse than when you first started... Who said the good life is easy?

Just think you have learned a lesson. I think most of us have gone through it.
1st. you learned how to follow BTD in your environment
2nd. you have just had a glimpse of how it is in the outside world. Better ammunition for next time ;D

In any case, Italybound has good advice. Up with the bennies especially protein. Increase your protein.

PS. Chances are you can go cold turkey on the coffee since you have been back only for a short period. If not just a couple of days to wean yourself off it. No big deal :).

Sorry about that.

But from reading the thread you referred me to, i still feel like the coffee doesn't make me feel bad and i don't think i'm experiencing inflamation from two cups of decaf coffee....
I did read in one response that it could" trigger an insulin resistance in some and other nasty stuff......" So does that mean that the two cups i drink could slow weight loss? or undo all the healthy eating i'm taking on?

I (like Mickey) need a kick in the butt and for someone to give me a specific reason for me personally to get rid of two cups a day...

vlollis,wishing you a warm welcome to BTD and the forums....... :-)
since coffee can mess w/ your blood sugar (insulin  resistance), it could def be a factor in slowing weight loss. when your blood sugar is out of balance, it can upset all kinds of things in the body. If you think of your body as a clock.........when one gear is not working  properly, none of them are.  ;) :)

Yes, you're right. There has to be a good reason for Dr. D'Adamo to specify coffee as an avoid...but i'm still struggling.  :-/

Re: decaf.......IF you are going to drink it, please be sure to find out how it is decaf'd. Some processes use formaldihyde, I think it is.  :X
A little info on how they decaf - dont know if this one goes into the really bad stuff or not........didnt get to read it all.

Hope it works for ya!! Coffee is prob the thing that some O's have the hardest time giving up. So you're not alone. Tho most are constantly looking for an acceptable coffee substitute.........that might actually taste like coffee LOL...........none found yet.  Have you tried the Hojicha Roasted Green Tea? Traditional Medicines makes a pretty good one. No it doesnt take like coffee  :'(  but you can steep it up to 10 minutes to get a more full bodied taste. :-)  If you like a little sweetener and milk,  you might try a little agave nectar and soy milk.  I chose soy because unless you make your own, finding rice or almond milk w/o avoids is impossible.  :'(

well, I WAS doing great...  for months... till  my whole routine changed and my life got topsy turvy..... I'm glad I was a good motivator for you, so now YOU are one for me.

I will have to just go cold turkey.. I know I can do it... tomorrow will be my day.  Coffee doesn't even TASTE as good to me as it used to.. I used to do the Cafe  DuMonde from Nawlins with heavy whipping cream and sugar.... I don't even buy the Cafe DuMonde or the whipping cream anymore... just plain coffee, well, Italian roast.... for my husband.  That is what he likes.. but it just doesn't taste as good, nor is it worth it...it really makes me feel BAD when I drink it.. I can feel my eyes get puffy and my head actually hurts... it never used to do that... it made me feel good.  I think that after being compliant for a long while,  going off intensifies the rugged feeling.  I've noticed that...
SO... I am going to  learn to get through stressful times and out of town times  ON the BTD.  I am going to say NO to doing too much.

I hope I can meet your expectations. I am all for kicking the habit on the week end.

Perhaps it is me (I am too motivated LOL!) but reading you now is not on the same tone you were before. That is a motivator to me. You were so peacefully bouncy before 8) So positive, energetic.... Perhaps it is just you are just concerned on how to avoid a down fall again.

Dr. D. specifies "coffee (reg.decaf)" as an avoid both on LR4YT and Aging. So I guess it is not only the caffeine.

Probably Italybound is correct and it is the process to make it decaf.

:)   I suspect there must be something in the 'makeup' of that dang coffee bean as well.  ;) ;D  It would be to their benefit, for those who can drink coffee, if they drink decaf, they might call the company and see just how they do that.  ;)

lol...  Suzana... I just had three old ladies stay with me for 4 days.. I had to entertain them and cook for them all of that time... and just delivered two kids to college... and traveling with   the youngest to out of town soccer matches!

I'll be back to the "energetic" Sheri ..... now I'm determined  .....
and you are right.. I'm feeling  less than energetic  right now... I've had the living life sucked out of me the last few weeks... I now know that I will  hold up better if I follow the BTD INSTEAD of giving in due to  stress/ lack of compliant food and situations...

tomorrow... is another day!!

Stuff I just saw mentioned, puffy, achy joints, tired, etc., oh yeah the weight gain - HMMM! - maybe the coffee I fell back into (and all the cream I put in it) has done much of this to me...
Isa, you are so good to be rid of your belove'd cafe' , good for you!! And it was so hard for you to quit, I know.
I think a lot of what we miss about coffee is the magic/zen of the ritual, a moving prayer, if you will. We just need to replace that comforting ritual with a newly relevant comforting ritual.
All that being said, I didn't have any coffee today, and am jonesing for it. I'm so disgusted - I didn't even like coffee a few years ago, I came to that taste relatively late.

I believe the term compliance here is referring to % beneficials. So in times of stress Martha eats 95%-100% beneficial.

Based on OSuzanna’s experience with her relatively new habit of coffee drinking, it is never top late lo learn (especially practice ;D) a new habit.

woke up this morning..  JUST had my green tea, no sugar, no soy, no heavy whipping cream.. and I feel fantastic!  
you know how we have all said that after being compliant and then falling off of the wagon, we "feel" really worse?  I said that in my earlier thread on this... well, I can also say that when  being compliant, the GOOD difference is huge, as well...  I can't tell you how CLEAR I feel today..  unlike days when I have coffee..  when I do, I feel clogged, slow, puffy, thick and inflamed... it's only the first sip that seems magical... and as said above.. the ritual... I WILL tell you all to avoid the Green Tea  mix at Starbucks.. it's loaded with a ton of  non compliant soy milk and some melon syrup... it's very very sweet!!  and I might as well have had a milkshake.. lol

and Susana, thanks for the tidbit from Martha.. good to know.. I have not read it yet, but  the concept sure makes sense...  thanks!  I have to  remember to plan ahead.. even pack foods when traveling... checking out restaurants ahead of time.. etc...

for all of you trying to quit coffee, don't give up...  yes, sighs.. I did slip, but since I was off of it for 4 months prior to the slip, it's not so tramatic to go back to plain tea.. in fact, it's  bliss.... I do miss the sweet taste, but the clarity is worth the trade...  keep up the good work!

Also, and this is most important for women, it blocks the absorbsion of calcium.  And for O's we have a hard enough time with that.

Day 3 for me.... I have been tired this afternoon, and I actually had time to take a little snooze.. imagine that!  I don't feel bad, just like my body needs to rest a bit, , so I gave into that.  I know I will have a few days of this, maybe even a week or two.  Yesterday when I felt this way I had no  time, so I  had some green tea.. that picked me up.  Today I'm trying to allow my body to slow down.  Even though I am not quite as energetic as I am "on coffee", I feel cleaner and less  puffy and irritated.  
I still can't figure out what to have in the mornings other than plain green tea.  I am not really hungry, so I just don't eat.  Coffee with  half and half or cream and sugar was my deal.  I don't feel like fruit or meat or greens.. so  I have just been waiting till I feel hungry and then eating   like two hours later.  Today I had eggs.... so see? it is just the ritual of the coffee that was bliss..
I still say that even though I had coffee again for two  weeks, it's  MUCH easier to go back off of it since I was off for about 4 months.. so.. all of you fighting coffee,  DON'T GIVE UP!!

My mom is fighting coffee and has been off it for 2 days. She is an O secretor and usually pretty complient on everything except coffee. She has been addicted to it for as long as I can remember and lately she had been saying she was only drinking it on weekends but I know she had been drinking it every day. She has lots of really great green tea I ordered for her and drinks it everyday as well. But last weekend she had too many beers and coffee and got acid reflux on monday and that seems to be a catalyst for her trying to give it up. I explained that coffee increases stomach acid which is why it is good for me along with a similar isoflavonoid that is found in soy. And the beer is heavily grain based and there was probably wheat in it which is why she had gotten acid reflux. That stout is so good. I also told her to drink bubbley water which will lower stomach acid and it seems to have helped her. I will find out tonight if she didnt have coffee today and noticed a difference. I keep telling her there is a thread right now where other O's are trying to give up coffee and talking about there experiences so thanks for all your insights.

I have been tired this afternoon, and I actually had time to take a little snooze.. imagine that!  I don't feel bad, just like my body needs to rest a bit, , so I gave into that.  I know I will have a few days of this, maybe even a week or two.  Yesterday when I felt this way I had no  time, so I  had some green tea.. that picked me up.  Today I'm trying to allow my body to slow down.  Even though I am not quite as energetic as I am "on coffee", I feel cleaner and less  puffy and irritated.  


Perhaps your body is asking for some rest after the stressful period.

It is actually one of the issues I have with coffee. I use it to push myself and unfortunately it leads me to no good end... a cold, extra tired, or just plain craby, not to mention internal, non obvious, issues.

Without coffee I am active to my body's correct limits. I think it is much safer although I may not do as much as society... on the short run ;D

I don't mean to get off of the track of this thread, but what a WONDERFUL thought you've introduced to me about being even MORE compliant under times of stress.. it really really makes sense.. it's like  preparing yourself for battle.. lol
but seriously, in the past I've used coffee as a crutch when I get stressed... when in truth, it only weakens me... I now have the mindset that I want to fortify myself when I'm stressed and eat as many bennies as I can...
and just for the record, I got up this morning, looked at the coffee pot full of coffee ( for my husband) and had my green tea.... whallaa!  instant clarity... and a sense of pride... for being STRONG!!!! I can already see my skin looking clear and bright  on day 4...
I think for me it's the decision I make when I open my eyes.. as I'm walking down the stairs.. coffee or tea??  lol... so far so good... keep up the  good work, everyone...!

Sometime in the late '80's, a friend gave me an article about coffee, which I really wish I still had a copy of.  It talked about the alkaloids in coffee and how some of them are extremely harsh and toxic to the liver and kidneys.  It said that caffeine is the least of our concerns where coffee is concerned.  The article described each of the alkaloids and the damage they do to our bodies.  That permanently changed my perspective on coffee.  While I continued to drink it (at a diminished volume) I never again had the illusion that it was a good idea.  It took the BTD to propel me away from the cuppa completely.

I have recently searched google for similar information, and there is nothing I can find that addresses these points.

Bad for the liver and kidneys? A possibility that pushes the score further into the "Why do I do it?" catagory. Thinking back to how great I felt after starting this BTD way of nourishment. Placing great emphysis on avoiding all the usual things and seeking out sources for more of the things recommended, natually coffee was the most easily identified and actually delt with. I was looking for results, I went cold turkey. No headaches just some morning fatigue. And result were strikingly good all around. I became such a sickening advocate. Most on the forum know the feeling of a voice crying in the wilderness, shunned by familly and friends alike, their eyes glazing over as you speak to those who will not hear, let alone listen. In time I feel I learned to moderate my delivery and tone down the vehemence and then I also began to drink coffee again.....Coffee ,coffee, coffee, Get thee behind me!

I do wish I could do that, but alas!  It was 20 years ago and I was living on the other side of the country.  I have no idea who gave it to me, except that it was a friend into natural foods and healthy living.  It was a photocopy out of a magazine.  That's about all my memory has saved from that event!

I still haven't 'Given up Coffee', but I have only had 2 cups this month...
After a heavy daily habit, I found some alternatives to try (green tea whipped up with ghee and cocoa like Lola suggested, and dandelion 'coffee' with cream)
I have found that at first i had coffee every second day only, and then only on weekends, and then it started to make me feel strange / did not enjoy the flavour as much, now I imagine I will only have it at my favourite cafe when I am there (once a fortnight?)..maybe not even that much at all?
I dont know, because I havent told myself I am giving it up somehow I am giving it up?!?
I know it would be harder if you go to cafes every day tho!

I looked at the bag I have of beans the other day and just said I don't think I'll get anymore the next time I go shopping.  I really hope I'll just not get anymore and replace my morning jolt with something else. I know it is in my best interest and sort of feel the ritual is verging on death cult status to continue. I'll probably get that holier than thou attitude going and will regret that but it might help to push against the tide I know will be tugging a me. I've done it before and felt great I just didn't connect coffee or absence of it to the improvement. This will be a more forcefull validation of the concept for me than when I started the BTD because two major present avoids will be removed and the backdrop is so otherwise free of other poor choices at this point.

This is the way I got out of the coffee loop also.  And I never said that I would never have it again.  The thing is, every time I taste coffee now, it makes me feel so absolutely poisoned that it's easy to avoid it.

I know it is so bad for me..I find myself with my morning coffee in one hand and 2 deflects in the other. I had such wicked withdrawl the last time I quit but somehow it always sneaks back into my system. I come from German parents with strong european roots..they seem to drink coffee like water, part of our culture ( I'm sure you Suedes out there can empathize...I think Ikea and I think of coffee) Reading these posts have really opened up my eyes again...If Isa can do it, we all can too!

I had to add this in..I just made cocoa drink that is really great. Couple of teaspoons of light agave nector mixed with a tablespoon or so of cocoa mix into a paste with a bit of water then add boiled water to taste. I didn't make it very sweet and it really satisfies like a coffee..neutral for all types

The lemon/ginger tea sounds nice!....i've given up the coffee for over a week now and i dont miss it. ....it helped that i gave up caffeine last spring and was drinking decaf anyway.  I quit caffeine because i read that it was the source of constricted muscles around my shoulders and neck..sure enough when i quit caffeine, the neck pain ceased.

i'm very happy with my tea and honey in the morning and at night...i just hope that my Tazo - Calm Herbal Infusion is okay...the main tea is Chamomile, a neutral, but it has two High Beneficials  - peppermint and sarsaparilla. I'm not sure about the hibiscus flowers and lemongrass in it but it smells lovely, has no caffeine and tastes great.

So Lola, what is the benefit of the lecithin? I used to have it years ago as an "emulsifier"..  there was some diet that promoted that with wheat germ, apple cider vinegar, lecithin and  something or other else... so why do you add that to your coco?
And for all of you coco drinkers out there, which one do you recomend?  Do you do sweetened or unsweetened?

also a great lubricant joints, nervous-system.....you name it!

I only use unsweetened cocoa when I use it.  I'm newly tired of cocoa in my green tea, and have just gone back to drinking it straight.

For a while I drank green tea with cocoa, lecithin and ghee.
Then for a while I drank green tea with just cocoa.

Ok, since i started this thread i thought i'd give an update.

Well since i started this thread i have gone off and on coffee a few times.  I'm out of my element right now.  I'm living somewhere temporarily until i find a place in a new town.  My living conditions are not too BTD friendly and i've been traveling alot.  Soo needless to say it has not been soo easy getting off the coffee.  

As of today i've been off of coffee for 4 days.  The only thing is i've been extremely tired.  Normally when i go off coffee i get headaches and sometimes flu like symptoms.  I guess i should be happy that i don't have the headaches!.  When i'm talking tired, i'm talking sleeping all day or feeling like i want to sleep all day.  Does anyone know if this is a typical symptom of getting off coffee?.

Yes, very typical!  You are not getting the strong stimulant, so your body thinks something important is missing.

I agree as well, that the lack of coffe is what is making you feel so ihhhh............that tired feeling is what makes it so darn hard to kick coffee.....you just have to muddle thru if you really wanna kick it. Be strong, hang in there, you can do it..........chant this daily LOL............been there, know what you're going thru and good for you that you've gone 4 days w/o!!!!!  ;D  as suggested, green tea or see if you can find some really compliant dark chocolate!! It's not avoid for me, but makes me feel yukky just the same.  Green tea soon comes to taste so good and pure when taken straight.  Interesting how quickly the tastes and cravings change when we stop confusing our bodies.

Never in a million years would I have ever believed that green tea would come to taste better than coffee!  I started drinking the java when I was 13, and so the addiction was pretty deeply embedded.  Green tea tastes and feels like nectar in my body.  No boiling water is ever used, by the way.

Well, it's official for me.. coffee now makes me sick.  I think I mentioned I have a pretty hectic fall going on here.  I've been out of town every single weekend , which means I'm "out of my routine and element"... and kitchen!
So this past week  I was in Memphis...I even brought my own green tea... but guess what? On the morning we were flying home I thought I'd have some coffee.   To make matters worse, we ate lunch at the airport, and I had some beef vegetable soup.. I'm sure it was full of avoids... and I had a Starbucks coffee...and dinner went downhill too... so needless to say, I felt like I had been hit by a truck when I woke up on Sunday.  Had MORE coffee on Sunday and felt so bad.... had bennies to eat the rest of the day..and now I'm back to my green tea and I feel safe....
I am really amazed at how BAD I feel now when I have avoids, particularly coffee...with milk and sugar
I'm drinking my tea with honey.... only...

Well, I am back from my holidays and I am off coffee. I have not had it in the last week.

The proof is this first week of labour. I have noticed that when I have my spinach egg omelet for breakfast I feel so good I see no reason why I would need a coffee.

I do not know how I will react when I meet for my friend for a coffee. I love our meetings and I wonder if I will make it without one.

I have just noticed in both paragraphs I have written a ? regarding my future consumption. I call that rouble waters as experience tells me that when the test comes I give in.

This holiday has been good to make me a greater believer on Dr. D's work. So if he says no coffee for O's I will give it a good try. As I write this I can tell a part of me wants to indulge the other doesn't.

Seeing this topic made me realize that I DID have a coffee yesterday while on a break at work.  Amazing how I blocked that from memory when logging my food into my diary.   I was very cold and thought it would warm me up - adding the cream would cool it a bit make it easier to drink than a tea...only 15 minute break.  I told myself that organic coffee wasn't 'that' bad for me - oh how we trick ourselves eh?  Well, the up side ... I didn't drink the whole cup as I wasn't enjoying it.

Today is Day 1 of being coffee free again.

Like the cocoa suggestions.  Will pick some up.

Actually, I got wonderful energy from it when returning after a period of abstinenece or having only one cup a day. But I am afraid a cup a day is not for me. I want more ::) which only made me more tired. But I did get the initial energy to get going.

I guess the best way to know if I will end up having better energy throughout the day is to test it myself. I will postpone my coffee consumption till November 1st. See what I have to say then.

Drinking coffee gives an immediate sense of more energy, but what an illusion.  It's like sitting in the car with the radio on, the heat blower on, the headlights on . . . all draining off the battery.  Later, when you start up the engine, the battery may be low.  If this is a regular habit, eventually the battery will not hold a charge.

Coffee energy is our own stored energy that is pulled from the adrenal system, eventually exhausting the adrenals.  Eventually we get to that point where coffee does not make us feel energized any more, but we just feel more and more drained.

At first, off coffee, I felt so sleepy and tired.  As my adrenals recovered, I find that I don't have the "highs and lows" that I had on coffee, but my energy level is more steady throughout the day, and I sleep better.

You and Victoria and what Lola mentioned a few posts before is exactly right. It does not really give energy. Just the illusion which is useful initially but troublesome later.

Today I have made up my mind. I have to say Isa's and Victoria's posts helped. I have done more things than I have ever accomplished. I would have never thought I had so much energy 8) And my mood was superb 8) 8) 8) I did not even need the mate ;D Coffee was calling me all day long though. I just hope I am wise enough to detect temptation in the future. ::)

I'm right  there with you!!!  Yes, I have fallen off of the wagon a few times, but I feel SO awful that I really have no desire to keep drinking the stuff... if only I had something wonderful to eat in the morning that would be a treat for me... I tried almond butter.. just straight almond butter.. about 2 table spoons.. but it put me straight into a coma.. I even got the  good organic raw stuff.... wonder why? I tried the walnut butter and it  was so expensive and just not so  great... I just need to find some "perky" thing to  make me wake up and run to the kitchen as I did with coffee.. lol.. I think it was the sugar and milk, to be honest.. even the soy milk.. so how many of you  who are/ were addicted to coffee put stuff in it, and how many of you drank / drink it black??  see, I  think I like the sugar and cream in it more than the coffee itself....
sorry  guys.. meat and greens just don't "thrill " me in the mornings yet.. maybe some day!  I just need something creamy... I might go back to some mana bread with ghee..  I think I just like hot and creamy in the morning..   that's a hard one!

SheriBerry, I am with you on the coffee for breakfast. I love mine with sugar and milk or soy milk. I still remember once I was not drinking it going to my mother in law's for breakfast and falling in love on how she served it on a pretty cup, poured the warm milk, the sugar, and then, oh my, the stirring. ::) And let's not continue with the spreading of butter on toast....

The thing is, if I have coffee for breakfast I need it for the rest of the day. No way I can do without it then.

I have now found great pleasure on a good amount 100gms spinach (I use frozen for convenience) and 1 egg, done in ghee. And a cup of green tea, without sugar or cream.

Also, I used to enjoy very much grounded flax seeds with a little warm water and a smashed banana. Sometimes I even added some nuts. I made it relatively compact in order to have it with a spoon.

I wonder the idea of green tea and cocoa, and perhaps some ghee. I am afraid of it since chocolate gives me pimples. I wonder if unsweetened cocoa will harm me too. I am not willing to experiment just in case I like it ;D

For a period I really enjoyed warm soy milk with sweetened cococa. I was having other pieces of candy so I do not know what provocked the pimples.

I have trouble dissolving my carob powder on warm soy milk but perhpas it works for you.

I have no pimples from drinking a cup of hot unsweetened cocoa powder with ghee and lecithin and a touch of BS Molasses every night!!
note I do not add any type of milk or other sweetener to that which would cause some pimples for sure!!

I've taken to drinking one cup black
coffee with my meat and vegetabel
and prunes and piece of chocolate for
breakfast. Started about 6 weeks
ago after stopping for 6+ months.

Yes, one cup of black coffee with
my breakfast gives me higher
energy levels and yes, I do get
more work done. My day starts at
5:50 am, Mon. thru Fri. and the
early time is not my cup of tea
(no pun intended).

I have never been a heavy
coffee drinker in my life and
go for decades not having
any. There is no headache
or other withdrawal symptoms
if I suddenly stop. It is strickly
for energy and , I guess, taste
that I drink it now. Without it,
at this job that I've had for the
last 1 1/2 years, I feel "dragging".
It's one of those things that
you make a call on regarding
the BTD. I eat mostly beneficials,
some neutrals and very few
avoids.

Maybe Dr. D's new book will allow
coffee for certain 0's. Dreaming?

You're right, my post does have those short poem-like lines. In emails if there are too many letters per line the receiving end gets everything chopped up so I was trying to avoid that happening here.

I've learned something new. Just type and let the lines fall where they may!

Thank you, comper, for your confidence in my ability. I do drink dark cocoa powder with agave the rest of the day---about 3 cups. Did I mention that I drink a cup of the dark cocoa along with my cup of coffee with breakfast? Yes. The one cup of black coffee makes my work day pleasant. Without it I'm just puttin' in the time...something that is odious to an 0.

Here I sit... in a hotel..and drinking my green tea!!   What a milestone, given that the coffee with the free breakfast would be the evil thing causing me to give in  in past weeks....
I am here for parents' weekend at my son's  college..  breakfast will be on campus, so I guess I'll just play it safe and eat fruit and tea... lunch at his fraternity house is on the grill... might be ok!! anyway, I'm getting through another weekend of being  "out of my element" without  wrecking my normal way of eating...

Lola, I have one of those, but I did not know what it was called exactly.... I bought it from a  coffee shop in florida.. this guy was selling them from his homeland...  but the stuff I bought from him to put in it is Yerba Mate.. and  is it to drink cold or hot? I was thinking cold... I'd LOVE it hot.. can I do that?  it's more "green" tasting, isn't it? sort of like a green tea? is that what you drink  all of the time?  anyway,  I do like mine, but I don't get it out much..

I drink yerba mate hot!!
I take about 2 or 3 teaspoons in my 'matera' every morning.........
and I fill it twice with hot water, not boiling, just nice and hot.
I would not take it cold.......

that s about all the mate I take a day, mornings, and love it.....
I just do not care for it later on during the day, then I take a large cup of green tea, with some lemongrass......

they just keep adding hot water to that, and sip throughout the day.

I prefer 2 Tbls and just fill the matera twice with water........then I m through with mate for the day!!

An Argentinian boy friend of my daughter s came over one late afternoon, he proceeded to make himself some mate.......he filled the whole matera up with palo!!!!
I almost had a shock!!! LOL
I then sent them both off to buy me some more mate, he practically emptied my stash!! LOL

he said that s the way they drink it 'back home'!!!! ''well not in this home'', I said!! LOL

my hub flies to Argentina often, invited as professor to congresses.......
when he goes out shopping or whatever, he tells me the shop owners offer you a sip of their bombillas.....cause they re constantly filling them up with boiling water!!! LOL
I m sure he does accept sips from good looking female shop owners, here 'entre nous'!!!

So it is meant for one to drink, with the aid of the bombillo (straw like item) from the matera.

It does not mater how long the water is in contact with the mate, as opposed to eg. green tea where one has to remove the leaves from the water at a specific time. Also, it does not mater how many times water is poured on the same mate. The power does not go or the flavour deteriorates.

So all I have to get is the matera, bombillo and mate con palo.

I drink it as soon as it has reached an agreeable temperature.

people do not leave the water standing and getting cold, this is the reason why they keep adding hot water.
mine doesn t taste as good if I fill it a third time...it does loose force and taste.
I believe it is entirely up to your taste buds as to how you prefer drinking it!

Alright! You have convinced me what with everyone's back and forth about yera mate con palo and how much better than coffee it is for a person, to try it again.  I have the tea bags in my cupboard and they are now out on the counter.

If memory serves it gave me a headache. Did anyone else have that reaction? It didn't seem to do much for me but for the sake of being more compliant with the BTD, I'll try again. Our local health food store didn't have any of the "con palo", but maybe Whole Foods does. The tea bags I have are GUAYAKI Organic that are "yerba mate leaves and stems, wood-dried and cedar wood aged". It is a fine powder. A good brand? Does wood-dried mean it was smoked? Avoid the smoked kind, yes?

Tomorrow morning is the time to try it as it a little late in the day now...although there is that third wall in the house to be painted today.....maybe try some now for go-get-em energy.

I have now tried to drink mate three different times and it just does not agree with me. I do get a headache with most new additions but I also did not feel well for a couple of hours. I was careful to use small doses but mate is not a "go" with me. Darn...

ok, so  as most of you know I'm really OFF of coffee... I've been drinking green tea.. sometimes plain.. some days with some honey and soy... but this thread has really gotten me excited about getting out my mate thingie cup again.. I even saved some ground meat and onions for breakfast, so I am at least going to give this a try.. the hot mate... just to see... and I'm going to New Orleans Tuesday to see my daughter and it will be GOOD to take this with me and avoid all that wonderful Nawlins  Cafe DuMonde... mmm.. I've been on the program for about 6 months. The coffee topic caught my attention, I decided to give up my 30+ year coffee habit.  Bad move for me, I developed phlegm in my throat that never completely went away, consitpated, couldn't sleep and my blood pressure went through the roof.  All of these things lasted for 2 months.  The other things like headaches and nausia went away in a couple weeks.  After seeing my doctor, I have returned to coffee drinking, just 16 onces per day or less.  After 3 weeks I have no symptoms.  I'll have the blood pressure checked again by Dr in couple weeks. I completely understand the addiction, and anyone trying to give it up, best of luck to you.

Thnak you for your feedback on Yerbe Mate. I didn't feel well when I first tried it and for some reason I thought that it was not safe to drink daily for an extended period of time. Some website I must have read but the Naturpathic Doctor at the local health food store said it was safe all around.

Still I decided to try it again last night after all the buzz and yes, Lola, drinking Yerba Mate at 5 pm did indeed kept me awake and alert. I painted that wall with 3 coats of paint and finished the trim to boot! It was 1:30 a.m. and I had set my alarm for 6 a.m. It was difficult to fall asleep and I could tell I had overextended myself which makes for a difficult sleep. Still that wall looks mighty nice. And only one more coat to go.

So the Yeba Mate definitely pumped me up, I felt it almost immediately. This morning I had 2 cups with breakfast and I'll see how it goes. I didn't notice any headache this time around and I felt fine to work.

It's too soon to tell if Yerba Mate can replace my coffee "forever" but I've had no coffee today and I am functioning on very little sleep.

That's unfortunate, janice g, that you felt poorly after drinking the mate. But isn't coffee, one cup, ok for an A? I seem to remember that one of the blood types can have some coffee and still be compliant.

I remember when I lived in Germany that I could only buy 'brown' (= roasted) mate, that is probably what you are thinking of Tomatilla. I have never seen the 'brown' one in Australia, here we only have the 'green' one.

Tried yerba mate this morning but think i used too little water, I had 2 small sake cups full only. It was not unlike those yuk wheat grass shots that are popular...

-brewed 2 tblspns in a teapot as i dont have a matera / bombilla, and let the small amount of water pass thru the leaves and drank it pretty much straight after that, no sitting around waiting... was this incorrect?

More water required? I read on another site that the matera is usually filled almost with the mate and only a little water should be used as it is not recommended to take tea with allot of water.. but exactly how much is a little??

tomorrow shall i try leaving it brew a little longer like green tea? And perhaps double the water...
I like that it was only a small shot like amount to drink as it is not so nice to drink allot of tea anyhow.

ooh, and i think the brown mate is the smoked variety??

Good Morning All,

The second day with no coffee, only Yerba Mate. Two teabags and two cups of Yera Mate around breakfast time.

Don't miss the "up" or the taste of coffee, in fact hot cocoa was almost forgotton altogether. I applied the last coat of paint on the wall yesterday evening and with my husband's help, moved the furniture back into the room.

Maybe this will be a pattern. I feel well. Slept soundly through the night. Alert this am. The plan is to purchase some loose YM con palo to try, when I can find it.

One comment, though, off in the far recesses of my head is a mere hint of a headache, a small shadow in the corner, so to speak.

that could possibly be the adjusting and detox from the x coffee consumption!

Still coffee  free here!!! YaeaHh!!   ok, so I did slip once, but it was for  lunch.  I was in New Orleans visiting my daughter and was in Whole Foods... had  a mocha latte and a bran muffin  because I was going to be  walking around shopping and alone driving all day and that was my "everything" for the day.... had no ill effects whatsoever and it tasted great.. but I  haven't been tempted again.. especially in the moringings... I DID try having plain tea in the morning with some left over onions and olive oil and pinapple juice ( the maranaid)... it was too heavy , and my husband later gentlly told me I had dragon onion breath...  so... I really think that I will not be eating onions .. you all know how wiggy I get about the bad breath.. I never eat garlic for that reason.. I know.. I know... you all tell me onions and garlic are so good for us, but I just can't feel good about blowing bad onion/garlic breath on my friends... it's so unattractive to me when I smell it on someone else... just a personal choice..
anyway,  my husband is off of coffee too now, so that's making it easier for me  to avoid it in  the mornings...
I guess hot coco is still an option IF I feel weak.. but I really think I'm free of that total craving for coffee that I used to have... I'm so  thrilled... it really CAN be done...

he didn t mention it being an avoid for any BT in particular, though.

If you haven't tried Roasted Chicory Root yet, I highly suggest it.  Chicory is added to many brands of coffee to add a better flavor.  You make it in your coffee maker just like coffee.  You may have to experiment with the amount used until you get it right.  I think it tastes like coffee.  It's a Bennie for A's and O's and Neutral for the rest.  (under vegetables).  It is available from Frontier Herbs & Spices in a large foil type bag from a food co-op or HFS.  If I remember correctly it is available in organic and non-organic.

My husbad has taken it to work and had several people trying to kick the coffee habit try it and they all liked it.

If a person was unsure, they could always mix it with coffee and wean themselves from the coffee by using less coffee every few days or so.

A question, Victoria and funkymuse, when you ask about green vs. brown are you refering to the color of the drink after steeping or the color of the dried leaves and stems before adding water? The dry leaves and stems I use are green in color but when water is added the liquid is brown not green. Anyway, funkymuse, have you tried adding a little agave to the drink? I find it improves the taste for me a lot.

It does talk about and sell both roasted and green yerba mate. So there are 2 kinds. The website has loads of information and I buy their products locally. They even sell yerba mate and mint. Does that sound good, SheriBerry?

However, at the health food store yesterday I may have purchased a no-no. It is a bag of loose green Guayaki Yerba Mate along with Ramon Nut called Java Mate!!  This Ramon Nut has naturally occuring caffeine! Oh Oh.  Now I haven't opened it and I will return it if the feedback I receive here indicates that caffeine is caffeine is caffeine wherever it comes from "naturally". This Ramon Nut has twice the caffeine of green tea but 1/3 less than coffee. It has long been used in South America and according to the PR on the package this is great stuff..."Java Mate tastes like coffee and feels like mate."
Does anybody know anything about the Ramon Nut?

Is it coffee free for us 0s or is it also caffeine free? That is the question.

Now I just read on the guayaki website that some say that Yerba Mate has caffeine in it but it does not produce the same deliterious effects as the caffeine in the coffee bean. The more knowledge the more grief!

I don't think caffeine has to be avoided or Roasted Chicory Root wouldn't be a Beneficial as it does have caffeine, perhaps naturally, not added but IT'S IN THERE!  Enjoy some.  Really, it's good.

Green Tea has caffeine as well.

Well, I'm still doing fine without the coffee or half and half... I am still putting sugar and some West Soy unsweetened soy milk in my tea most mornings.. THIS is something I want to quit, as well... but I figure I'm doing well to be off of the coffee.
At one point I  was experimenting with having plain green tea and  a few spoonfuls of  raw almond butter for breakfast.. even though almonds are  neutral for O's, I got a TERRIBLE brain fog every time I did it.  I can eat raw almonds ok, so it's not that I'm allergic to them.  Tomorrow morning I'm going to experiment with some pumpkin puree.. it's creamy, so I might like it.  I know I can kick the sugar habit since I've kicked the coffee habit.. as I once said, I may have been more in love with the sweet/ creamy/ hot  part of coffee than the actual coffee itself...  I would NEVER want  black coffee...  so.. it seems my  cravings are deeper!   know  thy self, eh?

Have you considered Agave Nector in place of the white sugar in your green tea?
It really fills the bill, so to speak. I, too, have a sweet tooth and I satisfy it mostly with cocoa
powder, hot water and agave. Or part of a 100% chocolate bar and agave.

The pumpkin puree is delicious, heated up, with a little butter and salt added . I used to include it with some of my meals. Only I discovered that I actually feel better if I don't eat the starches...like yams (sweet potatoes), winter squash and pumpkin puree.

So I've decided to try the Java Mate (yerba mate and Ramon Nut) tomorrow and see how I feel.

Yes, I did try the agave nectar... I really liked the taste, but I was using quite a bit of it and it was getting expensive.. plus, I started gaining weight on it... so... no more of that... I tried honey again last week, but my face started breaking out..   the glycemic load must be  high for the amount I put in...so.. even though sugar isn't so great, it doesn't break my face out and I am not gaining weight.. I'm going to try to go without sugar .. I went to a great yoga session tonight.. this world famous guy,  Doug Swenson...  he was amazing.. so I'm pumped up..  bummer, though.. in his books on  nutrition he says meat is out.. I didn't try to ask him if he knew about the blood type diet...

SherriBerri, Sorry, I haven't read all 7 pages of this thread but wondered if you tried Stevia as a sweetner?  A tiny bit goes a long way and it has a tendency to balance blood sugar levels.

As an A I have always felt a little smug about being able to drink coffee, but I am now wondering if it is catching up on me. I had to have a gastroscopy recently whilst having something researched and the outcome was that I had an unidentified inflammation in the stomach, not any of the usual suspects that path. could identify. So I am eliminating coffee to see if my tolerance has decreased with age, despite my blood type.I had been having up to 3 cups a day, usually of processed coffee powder.

12 days and no coffee! It's getting to be a habit with me.

I will pass on the Java Mate...the combination of Yerba Mate and Ramon Nut that "tastes like coffee and feels like mate".  On my side, those nuts can be left on the jungle floor for I did not feel well yesterday after drinking it. Of course I will give it another try to rule out other factors but it won't be right away.

Regarding caffeine and O's, it is the coffee that is avoid, not the caffeine.  Green tea has caffeine and it is not avoid.  The Ramon Nut is not tested by Dr. D, so we have no way of knowing what its' effect is on the body.  It could turn out to be an avoid, so if you don't feel good with it, you're wise to eliminate it.

The past couple of days, I have drunk Mate instead of green tea, just to see if I like it, and green tea stains my teeth so much I'd like a break.  I do like the tea, and I find that it seems to have less caffeine than the green tea.

The thing I was talking about with choosing either green or brown mate is the choice of raw or roasted.

Darn it, Lola!  I thought I'd found a solution!  I think all the foods that are best for us are deeply pigmented.  All those rich colors are the reason, or the result, of the healthy components in the foods.  But, I don't think the mate stains quite as badly as the green tea.

And, oh, I was mistaken about the roasted mate.  The different teas we have are a choice between smoked and unsmoked.  I have been buying the unsmoked.

Well I've tried moderation before and it always ends up being a case of "just this once" which escalates. So for the moment at least while I am trying to pinpoint the cause of the inflammation I am treating coffee as the major suspect, and totally eliminating it, and after 5 days I am clear of symptoms. But it won't be proof for at least another fortnight according to my gut feeling (excuse the pun).
My son, also an A, was a coffee freak but recently found that it made his mind race alarmingly, so he has gone cold turkey. He also finds that if he uses it in moderation, such as once a day, it invariably turns around to bite him, or to use another analagy, it is like the crack in the dam wall which will always enlarge.

Update here:
Fell off of the wagon ONE day this weekend.  We were out of town for my son's soccer tournaments, and  we all overslept for his first game!  We had to leave the house in  five minutes flat... horrible for me because I like to linger for an hour and take my time getting up.. especially now that I don't have coffee regularly.  Anyway, we ended up in the car, stunned , and at a Starbucks...  I gave in.. had some coffee.. my eyes felt puffy soon afterwards..  it tasted fine, but not overwhelminly wonderful...On Sunday I went back to green tea and bennies... had bennies the whole weekend, otherwise!  Anyway, I think I'm doing well and making progress....
