After 8 months of staying "clean" I had my first brush with wheat, and it was a prolonged brush let me tell you. I was away on a trip and circumstances were such that I couldnt avoid wheat. So I ate it, and within a matter of 24hrs my joints swelled up and all my old problems:numbness of the arm, swelling, indigestion, headaches etc., returned with vengence. The saddest part was that there wasnt enough vegetables and fruits to minimise (if that's ever possible  ::)) the after effects of wheat.

I'm now nursing a nasty fever, clogged nose and congested lungs. I feel that these are the after effects of eating 100% avoids (please correct me if I'm wrong). Now that I'm back home, I've been drinking pineapple juice and that seems to have a huge effect on reducing the swellings, in fact they are gone actually. I'm doing steam inhalation with peppermint & eucalyptus drops, and gargling with warm salt water. These have all immensely helped. I'm also taking my supplements especially quercertin with bromelin and Bcomplex. I dont expect an over night recovery but I certainly am not going to the doc to get prescribed chemicals to injest.

It's difficult to eat when your throat has shut down, but I'm almost fanatical about getting 3 beneficial veggies down along with eggs per meal, and not to mention beneficial fruits. Porridge is helping and also mikeo's wonder soup with parsley & garlic. Water as usual.

I was just thinking, if I didnt have a background on BTD, I would've run to the doctor, who would've superficially treated the symptoms I was exhibiting, which of course would've led to more issues. And I would've been labelled a hypochondriac over my digestion issues.

sorry to hear you are having to go through this rough time, but how powerful your knowledge of BTD already is, that will help you heal in no time!!

accidental, it's funny you should mention this but, last night, I had a fast food binge:  two hamburgers, french fries and a soda.  

I can't tell you the painful hell I went through, all during last night, and today I thought I was going to have a heart attack... that's how intense my muscle tightness and internal pains were.  Plus, I was out of Deflect.  

I tried to make due with some bladderwrack, n-acetyl glucosamine, and glucosamine sulfate.  It helped a good deal, but today has just been a hellish ordeal.

Thanks Lola. Yes, I read about Rodney :'(

Ron (where is the polar bear?), the fucus plus has bladderwrack in it, so that's helping as well. Pity I couldnt take any of the supplements or my rice protein powder with me on this trip, they might have helped, somewhat. Thanks for responding..

It is really amazing what a brush with avoids will show you when you've been off them for a long time. Back in November of 2005 I had two teaspoons of wheat bread stuffing on Thanksgiving, after just two months on a high compliance O secretor food plan with lots of beneficial foods. Twelve hours later I had the biggest panic attack and breathing shutdown imaginable. That was incredibly terrifying but also very instructive--I'd been having tremendous anxiety attacks for years and thought I was just nuts. It was the wheat!

Sometimes you need those encounters with bad food to remind you of what you used to endure. And also to show you how resilient and forgiving the human body really is. We are so blessed to have the BTD and soon, the GTD to help us regain health and wisdom. :)

Sometimes I really wonder if wheat is a food that is fit for human consumption.  Even for the blood types that it's not avoid for.  It doesn't seem to have any redeeming value, except that it's cheap and makes somebody rich.

would you consider spelt and sprouted wheats to be in this catagory?  :-/

how much bromelain can you take at one time for inflammation? I have a ribhead out (since Sat morning)........it is very painful and making it hard to breathe. Chiro is out of town until tomorrow.  :'( thanks

Italybound, I get a rib out once in awhile.....I would try this: get a rolled up pair of hubby's socks and lie down on it with the sockball pushing on the rib, then gently roll (tilt your pelvis up, and so on) to give pressure. Its worth a try...I love the feeling and it may do the job.

I wonder if with all the fooling around; GMO and the like, if we shall end up saying the same for all food items :-/ Hope not.

I think the possible ancestors of wheat, like einkorn and emmer, are somewhat better grains than modern wheat, which has been genetically jacked up (just as corn has) to provide a huge yield per acre, have much higher protein levels (triticale is an example of this modification) and also to be harvested more easily by mechanical means.

GM foods of any kind are the genie let out of the bottle. Eventually we will all have to deal with the consequences whether we want to or not.

I've been SO very good , but I fell off of the wagon today.. uggg!  We bought a little urban  abode at the beach and we spent our first night there this weekend!  Well, we took champaign down.. had that bottle..and then had a bottle at dinner! needless to say, it was WAY too much for me, and I had a horrible  hangover today... just terrible! so THE only thing  that I could get down today was a grilled cheese and frenchfries with ketchup... how's THAT for bad???  but it really did do the trick... I just know that I am going to feel it at some point.  The thought of anything else other than spicy, cheesey, salty food didn't appeal to me..  but needless to say, I will NOT fall off of the wagon again any time soon!!

I used to eat alot of grilled cheese too..........but not for hangovers.  ;)     that is something I miss............oh and then there's the Elvis sandwich. Yummmyyyy!!!!! Could still make my own version, but the original.......... ;D ;D

There's some controversy over spelt, Pat. Some people think the spelt grown and sold here in the States has been contaminated with modern wheat. It's possible.

Grilled cheese sandwiches for hangovers . . . hmm. Must be something about the combination of fat and grain starch that stops the nausea or something. My best remedy for a queasy stomach used to be Ritz crackers and milk. :)

Wheat crackers really make me sick as a dog--even more than wheat bread does. I think it's the flour used, it's probably higher in gluten or possibly higher in starch . . . dunno, but if I really want a nasty week of headaches, joint pain, muscle pain, IBS, wild mood swings and general inflammation, a handful of crackers will do it. Needless to say, we have no wheat crackers in the house at all. Even knowing the havoc they wreak, I still eat 'em if they're around. *sigh*

Pat,
I'm of the opinion that the modern wheat is not worth the trouble, as  Brig was saying.  And spelt is probably a better bet, but I think we're still better off with rice, quinoa, and millet.

As far as sprouted, it's going to be higher in enzymes and vitamins, but it's a food that my body can't handle, so I can't say for others.

Oh, AC, you just reached a point on your BTD journey that so many of us have experienced along the way!!!!  The point where you realize, thanks to your new BTD baseline of feeling dandy, just what wheat (and some other avoids, but in this case the lesson was about wheat) does to you--amazing, isn't it!  Like you said, in the past, you might have assumed you were coming down with something and gone to the doctor, but because of the BTD, your awareness is such that you realized right away the cause and effect you were experiencing.

Good idea to drink the pineapple juice (an anti-inflammatory and an O beneficial).  One suggestion I would make would be to order some NAP Deflect (N-Acetyl-D-Glucosamine) or to buy some glucosamine sulfate over the counter.  Taken a short time before or after wheat ingestion, glucosamine will bind to the wheat lectin and carry it harmlessly out of your body so that it can't agglutinate within your bod and go hog wild.

You are all making me hungry!  I'd really love a tuna and cheese and tomato melted on an Ezekiel Eng. Muffin.  I don't usually even buy Ezekiel bread but I bought the muffins the last time I was at Whole Foods.  Now I'll just have to go home and have some!

Wow...it seems like we can get some severe reactions from avoids...geez.  But, it's true...we start to feel fabulous, then we have some avoids, and realize that it's the avoid that is making us feel crappy, not some unknown source that would have formerly dragged us to the doctor.  A week or so ago I had a carne asada burrito with cheese, sour cream on a flour tortilla...I immediately became nauseas, and I don't think I'll be going to Burrito Loco anytime soon, the thought of that burrito brings back the urps.

Hi Pat,
I just noticed this question.  Is your rib still out?  How are you feeling?

Maybe it's too late for this, but I take 1000 mg 3 x day on an empty stomach because I have an old surgery  site that left a shoulder being pulled on slightly.  It creates a low grade chronic inflammation.  This amount of bromelain seems to take care of it.

Better today, thanks for asking......back is pretty sore as it effects the muscles as well. Did get to the chiro yest..........everything was a mess. LOL           Lately, somehow  ::), this seems to happen on a Saturday morning. Now mind you I'm doing nothing exciting on Friday nights.  ;)
And it is never too late to have the info........actually I think I'll take some for the next couple of days just to deal w/ the inflammation.  Thanks for your help.  :K)

and the story continues.. remember I told you I  had to eat the grilled cheese and fries and ketchup just to sooth my headache?  well.. all those avoids just made me feel terrible on Monday.. two days later..  specifically my knees, in which I have arthritis... the Baker's Cyst returned, and I was soo  sore!  so now I'm back to  lots of green tea, no wheat .. lots of veggies, bits of meat...  the whole type O arthritis  diet...  
and I am SO much better in just 12 hours... just a true testimony to the fact that once you start eating this way, falling off of the wagon causes serious setbacks!  not worth it if you have some real issues as I do!

In the Health Library books Dr. D considers spelt better for Type O secretors then rice or millet, both of which are downgraded to neutral infrequently. Quinoa and spelt remain neutral.

Use N-Acetyl Glucosamine (NAG), or better yet the N-Acetyl-D-Glucosamine in Deflect O, to bind with the wheat lectin. Glucosamine sulfate does not provide the same beneficial action.
