Hi everyone,
My name is Valerie and I am just starting the BTD today(6-23-07) I just read the first book. I have read some articles on here. I am so excited! Who would of thought your blood type had anything to do with how your body reacts to food, how you feel and how you lose weight? That is amazing. This is a true eye opener for me. :o
I am an O. I just turned 40. I am 5"4", 255lbs. I weigh more now than I have ever weighed in my life. I have tried to lose weight for years. Nothing has worked. I ache and hurt everywhere. I have migraine headaches. I have low blood sugar spells pretty regularly. I sleep every minute I can because I am exhauseted. I have no energy. I cry for no reason. My hands and arms fall a sleep during the day and especially when I sleep. I went to the doctor last year and had a complete physical. My cholestrol is 264 but that is all they found wrong. They said I was depressed and put me on antidepressants and wanted to put me on cholestrol medicine. I said no to the cholestrol medicine. I went off of the Lexapro after a few months and went to counseling for 6 months. I have spent a lot of money and I feel exactly the same. I am so excited about the BTD! It gives me great hope!  :) :) :)

Welcome VAlerie- Yes BTD will help you.  Start eliminating avoids out of your house. Than buy as many beneficials to stock your frig and pantry,
    Being an O, the most helpful start would be protein  beef and greens in the AM think omelet, use whites because of your chloresterol, I would start off with 2 oz of cooked ground sirloin, (if you like the taste of sausage) add sage to the meat along with other beneficial spices, like tumeric, cumin, cayenne pepper sea salt, and peppercorns ground fresh (not black pepper ), you can throw in onion, garlic, spinach, nori (seaweed)break in little pieces and let egg absorb seaweed. Put olive oil or grapeseed oil or ghee in a frying pan, medium heat & proceed.

I mention this because it will give you energy quickly, for your day.  ( I would forget white & grain for awhile) but I would eat plums, tart cherries or fresh cherryies, figs, blue berries check your list)

If something says 0-3 times a month, try and forget it.  Don't eat unless you absolutely have no choice.
Learn portions
learn number of ounces of meat, poultry, seafood
vegetables are pretty free, so are fruit, (without sugar added and especially without corn syrup)
fresh is best ,

My health has improved tremenously, and I have lost a lot of weight.  I was oxygen, not any more
                                                             I was in a wheel chair, than walker than cane , not any more
                                                             I've went down 6 sizes in clothes from a 3X-4X to 22/24
and almost down to the next size.

You can do it! I'm excited for you.
    Remember even if you can't walk for an hour a day, you can walk for five minutes every hour your awake. You can stand up in front of a chair and sit back down and stand up again & sit back down (I do this ten times than rest) You can stand in front of a kitchen sink, hold on the the counter and do squats, and back up, Just picking your arms up as farm to the sky as you could and lowering them again is exercise.  If you have an office chair, move seat and legs one way and waist up the other way, back and forth.  or put on some music and dance, or move, or sway, as often as you can a day.  It all helps so much!  Best to you. I've lost almost 78lbs, and you can too

Valerie you have found the best solution to your health challenges.....I am glad you found this site. Geminisue has given you great advice above, and there are many others of us who can steer you toward your goal.
You're an O, think: hunter/gatherer......and ditch the breads and pastas. but hey, have that sweet potato, every day if you want. Have a banana,  you can have rice if you are really needing something to make it work for you.
this morn I made steak and eggs for the DH. I had some steak cut into thin strips for fajitas in the freezer, just threw a few in a pan.....etc. Best of luck to you.

Stay with it & if you feel it isn't working, check your secretor status mentioned somewhere in this site.
However, meats & leafy veggies should really work for both 'secretor statuses.'

Welcome, Valerie! I changed my lifestyle to mostly compliant blood type dieting early '06, and my life has changed. My aches and pains and a ver-r-r-r-y long list of health miseries faded away stunningly quickly. I can't recommend BTD enough, because it's worked miracles not only with me, but family members who are trying aspects of it, too. Wierd things get better out of the blue - example, a sister of mine cut WAY back on dairy, and went from a lifetime of being unable to wear even gold earrings, to being able to wear anything in her ears. Things you always took for granted will improve. Don't get me started!!! I now take about 5% of the medication I used to take.
My hard-earned advice for a new O would be Quit Eating Wheat, Corn and cut way back on the Dairy. Give away the wheat-based and corn-based foods in your house. You will become a "professional" label-reader, and it may feel overwhelming at first, but all that new knowledge will sink in, and you'll start to feel on more solid ground. When you can afford it, get your secretor status tested. Makes a huge difference fine-tuning your food list.
When I started, the idea of no bread or pasta was too strange to me, so I substituted with compliant breads and pastas. Eventually I realized I felt so much better when I didn't eat those things, and now we don't even have it in the house, and don't miss it. I eat like a queen, and often have steak and parsley or other greens for breakfast. As an O non-secretor, I do not feel deprived coz I feel awesome when I'm being a good little girl on BTD. When I cheat, my old problems come back, so I'm  mostly rather good.
You will find tons of great recipes, and recipes that you can adapt.
And I started feeling much better less than 48 hours into the diet. It's a lifesaver.
Any questions you have will be answered fairly soon by a bevy of BTD'ers from all over the world. Example, our beloved Tomatilla Isa (your first response to your post in this thread) is in Switzerland, and tho English is not her first language, she gets her point across in her enthusiasm.
You will find the people here bright and kind, all whom have benefitted from aspects of Dr. D's work.
You must read Live Right 4 Your Type. Buy it or find a library branch that has it (mine has several of the D'Adamo books) or get comfy on one of those couches in the bookstores and start reading. Learn, learn, learn.

Welcome. For what it's worth, I am finding for me that muscle aches and lack thereof are associated with weight gain and weight loss, respectively. Haven't narrowed down the exact tie-in, but maybe something to keep in mind. :)

Researchingthings- I connected the lack of joint pain with getting rid of wheat and corn, those are the first two I got rid of, & I was pain free in a couple of weeks, and got off of vicadin 3 X a day to 0 (of course I had to ease off of it because of the dependency to them and dr's advice).  Hope you the best on your researching and success, always interested to see what else, you find.

Thank-You so much for all the support and the enthusiasm! I made it through today. YEAH!! I am very shocked about the no wheat, since everywhere you look and hear, they say how good it is for you. I am so happy I read the BTD book. I will get that book called "Live Right 4 Your Type". I know that changing my eating and lifestyle will be hard, but it will be all worth it. Thank-You so much for all the information. I feel like I am part of a wonderful family.

Welcome Valerie.  You have stumbled upon a way of living and eating that will help you get better.  If in doubt, just read the testimonials in the Testimonial Forum.

I will bet you, that you will start noticing differences in as little as 2-3 weeks.  It will be very subtle.  Like, you wake up in the morning and .....you are no longer stuffed up!   Or......you take a step or two and....your joints hurt less.  Or.... you have a meal, and ....there's virtually not pain afterwards!  Or, you have a bowel movement, and.....it's NORMAL!

Please ask as many questions as you need.  We are all here to help each other succeed in this new way of looking at what's healthy.

Hey Valerie...welcome to the forum and the BTD way of life.  From your testimony I had alot of your symptoms and more before I started on BTD.  Sooooooo many good answers for you above from the wonderful people on here.  My biggest advice to you also, is to get your secretor status checked so that you can tweak that diet right off.  And red meat and greens for breakfast.  And yes...the Live Right 4 Your Type book.  To many of us it is our lifestyle bible. ;)  And...as geminisue points out the exercise...great for us O's...no matter how little we do at a time to get us going.   Great stress releiver. :D

OSuzanna...wow...I have not worn any earrings (gold either) in many, many years due to itchiness and inflammation when I did.  Even since BTD due to allergies with them.  I will have to give them a try again and see what happens. :D

Re: the joint pain thing, my joint reduced at least 80% just going BTD, but a few months later I found out I was a Non-Secretor, quit oats and soy, goodbye hotflashes (the soy) and joint pain (the oats). All these things discovered after dropping the offending foods.

WOW!! I have never met so many positive and helpful people. I can already see that I am in the right place. I have never had suppoort like this, (ever). My family thinks I am crazy. They do not have much faith in me on dieting. I have always failed and then I am still fat and then I feel worse, because I know I failed. I am happy with the food choices for an O. I am having a lot of trouble with caffeine withdrawls today. I have one doozie of a headache. I have been drinking green tea, but I had to drink some Dr. Pepper. I am addicted to Dr. Pepper. This will be hard for me to quit drinking. I did not realize how addicting sugar and caffeine was, until  I cut it out of my diet. Today is a little challenging, because of the headache and I feel like eating the old way.

eat protein everytime you get a craving.......

and drink lots of water........that took care of my headaches, migraines actually.

a lectin free diet and avoiding coffee are also a part of it.

When I quit coffee (and, yes, I cheat occasionally) I started by using 1/2 regular beans and 1/2 decaf, and did that for a few weeks. Started trying green and related teas. Found I liked white tea best, with a tiny pinch of brown sugar. Also cut back on the coffee cups per day. The reduction of caffeine was gradual. Oh, yeah- I used to LIVE on Diet Coke big time, and replaced that right away with selzer and club sodas with a little compliant fruit juices or plain. I just missed the fizzy wetness. Now I just drink them plain.  By time I quit coffee, my body just felt much better, not deprived. I'd heard/read too many headache stories of caffeine withdrawal, so I tried to avoid it, and it worked, the way I did it. Also, the moment I gave up the coffee with 1/2&1/2 and sugar, my sinus problems pretty much went away. I have now had 2 Springs without allergy meds, yahoo!
Hope this story helps someone with ideas.

I am thinking that O's are encouraged to drink sparkling mineral waters, see if you can get some to help when cutting
down on soda.  Best wishes are for you.  Also, my family, doesn't support this diet, but I am not living with them now,
so I just don't discuss it with them.  My sister is even a dietician, but anyway, this is a very healthy diet!  You will
feel better eventually, maybe even sooner than you would think..... ;)

Valerie:  glad to see that you are cutting out the coffee.   Yes...headaches were a big thing for me with it.  As Lola mentioned...protein and lots of water.  And...your family thinks you are crazy...join the club.  There are many of us on here with that also.  Mine always forgets what I was like before I started BTD now.  I don't and don't ever want to go back there.  Take some before pictures if you have to to remind yourself of who you were.  I have some of myself that I keep handy to look at.  ;)

And yes...when you are feeling headaches or ill...the old cravings come back to you.  Keep up with the beneficials (especially) and they will get you through it all.  :D

Hi Valerie,
I think you'll discover that this way of life is the best gift you can give yourself!  I've been a firm believer for about 10 years and although there are times when I still stuggle, I know that it's the best decision I ever made in terms of my health.  I found the BTD after being diagnosed with colitis and having had a near total thyroidectomy for a small thyroid cancer and a parathyroidectomy for a benign tumor.

The thing is that wheat and corn are America's biggest crops and very cheap to produce.  Therefore, "they" (i.e., the big agribusiness giant corporations) try to inject, infuse, sneak, and otherwise place one or both of them into basically EVERYTHING on store shelves.  They also go to great lengths via advertising, lobbying the USDA, etc., to convince us just how good these things are for us (not!).  By the way, if you see anything with the ingredient "fructose", that is really CORN syrup, even though one would logically assume it is fruit sugar *sigh*.  One of the biggest lessons a newbie must learn is to always, always, always read the small print on every ingredient label on products you are considering purchasing.  It is really eye-opening and infuriating just how omnipresent wheat and corn are.  Corn syrup and wheat are inserted into the most non-obvious things, everything from deli luncheon meats to imitation crab meat to dried cherries to dry-roasted seeds and nuts.  Again, reading labels is your best and most effective defense against this barrage of anti-O ingredients by our friends at Con-Agra, et al.

Most of us go through an initial period of SHOCK  :o  at how pervasive these ingredients are, and an initial feeling of, wow, it is IMPOSSIBLE to avoid these things!  But it truly gets easier as you go along.  You will learn how to avoid the landmines.  No worries, mate!  Welcome again!

Hi Valerie -
Welcome, and thanks so much for your honesty.

I was so relieved when I found out that seltzer water was beneficial.  I just love it - especially during the summer months.  I used to mix it with Knudsen Just Black Cherry Juice.  I also like it sometimes mixed with apple juice.  I usually  drink the lime flavored seltzer just plain.  It is so refreshing.  A few months ago Costco carried two new juices by Welch's:  White Grape Cherry and White Grape Mango.  They don't have fructose, and they were delicious.  

I used this recipe for a coffee substitute:  http://www.dadamo.com/typebase4/recipedepictor.cgi?460 until my craving for coffee went away.  I rarely need to have it any more, but it satisfied my need.  

Another coffee substitute is roasted organic chicory root dissolved in hot water.

Your enthusiasm will motivate many of us.

Thank-You Peppermint Twist for your insight on the hidden corn, wheat and sugar. I never read labels before. Thank-You to all who have giving me other helpful websights and their testimonials to read. Thanks!!! for all the ideas to help. I have never belonged to a forum and this is awsome. We have free soda at work. I know when I drink it all day, I feel terrible. I work 10 hour shifts. I have found exercise or walking are too hard on the days I work. I went for a walk yesterday and I went into a low blood sugar spell before I got home. My feet hurt so bad, especially when I wake up. I will not give up. I want better health. I am reading the Live Right 4 Your Type book. Its amazing how this information fits my blood type. I am bored to tears with pilates. With, aroebics I felt energized and I could keep going forever. (which I can not do at this point) I started to take a Multivitamin, and calcium.
I did not eat much protein. I really have to remind myself to eat meat.

Well, then this is going to be really eye-opening and somewhat infuriating to you when you first start realizing just how pervasive wheat and corn (particularly corn syrup/"fructose") are in our food supply.  Just know that, if at any point you feel overwhelmed by it and feel like "Well, is there anything I CAN eat?!", you are not alone, we've all gone through that.  But the really great news is that YES, there IS so much you can eat, and so many alternatives to specific avoids that you might feel at first that you can't live without.

About the free soda at work, that would be tempting and hard to avoid, so is there any way you could schleppe in a big 2-liter plastic bottle of plain seltzer water to work and keep it at your desk or workstation?  After a while on this diet, you realize how bizarrely UN-thirst-quenching corn-syrup-laden sodas are.  They are more like rich desserts than they are like beverages.   I love my plain seltzer water!  You can add a dash of lemon or lime (yum, my fave!) to it for a real thirst-quenching, vitamin-C-infused treat.  And, of course, you can add all sorts of juices and 100% fruit concentrate syrups (available at most health food stores) to it for yummy homemade sodas, such as pineapple, black or red tart cherry, concord grape, elderberry, etc.  Your imagination is the limit!!!  And these sodas are actually beneficial, too!

This is the first forum I ever belonged to and it is still my favorite by far.  Actually, it is the very first web site of any kind  I came to.  The minute I got on the net, I was like, ooooooh, Eat Right for Your Type has a web site, I have to find it!  I find that this forum and the people on it are the most helpful, fabu people in the universe, yay!

I read that a type O should not drink lemon water with chorophyll. I bought Kyo-Green. Is Barley and wheat grass alfalfa? Should I avoid this product, since I am an O? I am struggling with food choices. I am bad. I am still drinking pop. It is very hard to change your eating habits when everyone around you is eating the same and enjoying themselves.  I enjoy food so much and everyone is happy when they eat. This is probaly the most hardest thing. Food makes me happy and content until after I see what and how much I have consumed. I also feel yucky physically and mentally. The 4th will be hard with the family get together. To be honest, there will not be anything that I can eat. All my old ways of cooking have avoids like crazy, (corn syrup, wheat, sugar, flour, potatoes, corn, lots of no nos). I went to the store tonight craving corn, weird. It is no fun eating now. I am frustrated with how to cook this new way. How do you cook with no marshmallows and cool whip and green bean casserole with no mushroom soup. I went to the health food store. I bought some products. To be very honest, it is just not the same. I also have noticed that it takes me so much more time to prepare a meal. I know it will be worth it in the long run. I will be so thankful, but right now I am having a real hard time with change and missing my old eating habits. How do I get past this? Will I always crave the old food? My life and health depends on this change for the better.              Help,

the more beneficials you add the better you will begin to feel, until those avoids just do not taste the same to you and you choose health over one size fit all recipes and lifestyle.

it is a process, but I can tell you are getting the idea pretty clear!

Just be careful about the source of the chlorophyll. It is frequently sourced from alfalfa, which is a type O avoid.

Wheat grass and barley grass are OK. They do not contain the problematic lectin.

For the 4th of July eating problem, if it's not too late, concentrate on the protein. Let's hope they have chicken, fish (most are OK?), steaks or hamburgers.
If it's hot dogs, ouch!
I finally found some great hot dogs at Whole Foods. I think the brand is Applegate Farms. They have turkey, beef, & maybe chicken ones. The may be $5 a pack, but I can pig out on hot dogs for the first time in decades!
When eating out, I go ahead & have potatoes often because there is not much out there that hasn't been tampered with (corn, wheat, sugars, etc.).
The much maligned food of the bygone years is actually better than some of the junk they foist on us as 'healthy.' I probably could eat relatively compliant in a 1950s type diner--meat, veggies, real butter, etc.  I think they served 'blue plate specials' which were real meals. Skip the bread & potatoes (unless you cheat like me with potatoes).
Have a great holiday & remember we still have the freedom to disagree & complain about food.  Let's watch that our politicians don't take that freedom away from us.
The same goes for vaccines, home births, etc.

MoDon - Thanks for the info about wheat grass.  I did not know this and may sample it some day.

Valerie -  I don't know what is right for you, but maybe you could start with tiny manageable goals you can achieve.  Example:  set a goal - get yourself a nice water bottle - one you can take to work - one that appeals to you.  Set a goal you can achieve, such as "Next week (or next month or next year - or whatever) I am going to drink my own water instead of soda on Monday, July 16."  Whatever date you pick, take your own water on that day and drink it instead of soda.

Once you achieve that goal, you can pick another date or choose another small goal.  Be very realistic with yourself - don't lie to yourself.  But make your goals manageable, realistic and easy - even add an element of fun to them.

I used to go to the water store and buy a card for 100 gallons of water because it was cheaper.  Then when my bottles were getting empty, I'd go fill them and carry water in a small drinking bottle when going out.  I also found some quart glass at the 99 Cent Store and would fill them with water for the counter or refrigerator.  Now I have a wonderful water system in my kitchen, and I love it.  My goals for water took many years to develop.  My body usually starts telling me what to do now.  Then I don't have to be confused.

Well, Valerie, if you fell on the 4th, I fell right with you.  Last Saturday, I went to a big bar-b-que with 300 others.  We had bar-b-que tri tip (I'm sure someone poured the pepper on), Santa Maria poquito (?not sure if compliant) chili beans (probably had Suzie-Q's seasoning with loads of pepper), one half ear of sweet corn, two pieces of non-compliant garlic bread, salad with ranch dressing, and two pieces of cake for dessert.  I loved  the food going down, but the next day I had at least 5 spontaneous nose bleeds, then every day and night since then more nose bleeds.

Did I stop?  NO.  Today I went to another bar-b-que at the park.  Because I had a bad nose bleed this morning, I thought I was going to be good, but I wasn't.  I had chicken (probably with pepper), potato chips, dips, salsa, corn chips, beans, macaroni salad, potato salad, cake, whatever was there.  There were hundreds of friends at the park - the weather was supposed to be in the 90s and 100s, but some cooling fog came in yesterday.  The weather was beautiful - in fact it was sunny and perfect, the food was shaded, and we all had a wonderful time.  

We all had a good laugh when one of the women at the picnic walked in wearing a tan T-shirt with what some of us thought was a cute saying and picture.  The woman was a Native-American.  The T-shirt was tan.  On the top in big letters, it said, "Homeland Security."  Below that there was a row of about 10 Indian chiefs with feathered headdresses, sitting on horseback with large spears.  Beneath the chiefs, the saying read "Fighting Terrorism Since 1492."  The lady wearing it said she picked it up in Wyoming while on vacation.

I sometimes have a few days of Alzheimers when I'm non-compliant.    Maybe some day I'll get there, but it sure didn't happen this weekend.  I may whine tonight and the next few days, but I enjoyed the day with my friends.

Hi Valerie, welcome and here's a little story about club soda (or seltzer water).

My husband is a Type O and he was sick in bed.  You know an O is very sick if they go to bed during the day because healthy O's love to move (which you can be soon).  I took him a glass of club soda, he drank it and about a half hour later he hopped out of bed and got busy!!  It surprised even me!  But remember that the beneficial foods act like MEDICINE.  So take your medicine to get well.

If you get free sodas at work, there must be a button on that machine where you can get just the bubbly water (which is the club soda--same thing).  I know because I've requested club soda and that is how they get it for me.  Just the plain bubbly water will make you feel good.   Be thankful you are an O and you can have bubbles!!!

If you really need a "normal" (sic) meal, make some spaghetti with tinkyada rice pasta....its a neutral...use plenty of grassfed beef in the sauce, and maybe a bit of pecorino (sheep) cheese on top. and don't forget the salad.

Hi everyone,
I have been cheating and slacking. (bad girl), anyway, lol Monday I got down to business. A lady I worked with said lets do it. I was telling her all about this BTD. We started together. It is a lot of fun doing it with someone. I have been following the BTD diet faithfully for 5 days. The best news is I am off the pop. Yesterday was a hard day, but I made it. I started a low blood sugar and was craving the junk food. I did what Lola said and eat protein. I was amazed, it worked. I felt fine afterwards. I am going to start walking tonight. I have worked all week 10 hr. shifts and it is hard to walk, because my feet hurt so bad. All the advice and help from you guys sinked in my head and I am on the road of great health now. I already feel better. Oh, and the best news is I am changing jobs. Yeah!!!  I will not be around food all day. I am so motivated and excited. I am not starving either. I eat great. I went to a Natural Health Store and bought food, and vitamins. I also bought the Eat Right 4 Your Blood Type Cookbook. I just want to say a great big thank-you to all of you on here. When I was struggling, I kept on thinking about what everyone was telling me on here and everyone is so informational, I hope one day I will be able to help someone.  It finally kicked in and there is no stopping me now. Hurray!!!! I truly believe this is the answer.

Yeeeeayyyy Valerie...so glad to hear that you are on the right track and changing jobs so that you will not be near food.  Just remember to carry those snacks with you when that O stomach gets agoing.   After having worked 10 hour shifts have a nice epsom salts bath.  Make sure your tub is clean so that the bath will work properly.  What time do you work in the mornings?  I find it best to get my O exercise in the mornings...although not always possible.  It helps me, along with eating red meat and greens for breakfast, to have a really great day.  

Glad to see you got someone else on this way of life also.  Keep us posted on how you are doing. :D

Well, Here is an update on my progress. I am doing absolutely wonderful. It has been two weeks. I have been totally faithful. I feel so much better. My friend is doing wonderful also.  She feels so much better. I started to excercise alittle. I do not enjoy it, but I feel better afterwards. I will continue to do more excercise. I have added a probotic and a digestive enzyme to my vitamins. I am not hungry like crazy anymore. I do not even think about pop. I am so happy. Thank-You!!!!! Thank-You!!!! to everyone. I truly am totally excited.

Hi Valerie!  

I'm a type O and have only been doing this diet for only 4 months now, so I'm still pretty new to it, too.  I had a lot of the same struggles you did at the start, I really empathize.  It's tough to give up old eating habits.  And it's real tough to break the sugar cravings!  

Like you, I've used Lola's eat-protein-instead-of-sweets trick to good effect.  Now when I crave a candy bar, I get something proteiny or fatty or both (like a handful of nuts) and the craving disappears.  It's nearly miraculous, isn't it?  :)

Just want you to know that you're not alone in feeling like exercise is an unwanted chore.  I'm a lot the same way.  But I'm also hopeful.  Let me explain:  2 years ago my husband took up running and nagged me into joining him.  Eventually I ended up running without him because he kept getting injuries.  Then, several months into my running routine, a funny thing happened :  I started to crave it.  The exercise.  The running.  The wind in my face.  My body would start to rev up every day and I couldn't help but think, Wow, I can't wait to run!  It was a completely new experience for me.  I'd heard of people really liking to exercise, but I'd never really understood why.  I have a friend who says exercising is plain hateful, and she'd rather sit on the sofa and read a good book.  Well, I was the same way - until I wasn't.  It was so weird, and kind of exhilarating.  I actually looked forward to working out every day and would feel absolutely terrific afterward.  

Am I like that now?  No.  Not yet, at least.  But I anticipate it.  In the intervening two years, I spent a lot of time getting sick and recovering only to get sick again, which would bump me off my running schedule, and I ended up losing that lovely exercise-craving benefit I'd experienced - guess that was endorphins or something - and I would have to re-start my running program so often that it became a sore point with me.  Very frustrating to build up your miles, then have to start from scratch again.  More than once.  

So now, because of the BTD, I'm forcing myself to run all the time.  Plus I'm running more frequently than I did two years ago.  I haven't had to quit yet because of illness because the BTD is keeping me healthy (yay!), and, I think the protocols are helping (when I need them).  And I am so looking forward to the time that my body says, "Okay, take me out for a run now!"  :)

Valerie, you are so brave, so teachable, so willing to be led in the right direction, even if that's not where you ever thought you'd go.  You have a lot to be proud of.  And I believe exercising will get better for you.  It did for me, and I believe it will only get better from here.

Wow dragonsgold5!!!!! That is one of the most motivating posts I have read. Thank-You so much. I really hope I learn to love excercise. You have no idea how much I hate and dread it. I alwasys feel better afterwards, it is just the getting stated. I am doing really well on this diet, once I made my mind up. The first couple of weeks I did not do so well. The more and more I read on here and all the wonderful support and help I received on here is the key. I do have some strong moments of craving the old food. That is when I get hungry, so I do what Lola said and eat protein. I want to learn as much as I can, so I can succeed at this. I have failed at eveything else I have tried to lose weight. It is not only about the weight. It is feeling overall good. I have had too many days that I drag and only want to sleep. I do not feel that way even after only two weeks. I am very excited about everything. The strangest thing is it really clicks with your body. I am amazed that how the avoids really make you feel yucky. They do!!!!!!!!Wow!!!!! I started taking feverfew for my headaches, which I rarely get now. It does help. Keep up the great work to everyone.

Hi everyone,
This is my one month update. I will say, honestly, I miss eating my old way almost all of the time still. I do not know if that will get better. I have many feelings of its not fair, being left out, and just plain feeling deprived. I found great joy in eating junk food. It used to be fun to eat out. That is what people do for fun. No popcorn at the movies (bummer). I love popcorn. I miss potatoes so much. I plain just miss eating all that bad stuff. They sure make preservatives and chemicals taste good. I have some pretty hard days. I am cooking healthier and I get a lot static and humor with it from my family.  I walk everyday. I started my new job and its nice to not be around food and pop all the time. I truly feel so much better and I know that it is all worth it. That is the only thing that gets me through. I have had a great success in weight loss and I look better. All the puffiness, and bloatness is gone. I don't have aches and pains like I did. The headaches are gone. It is all great, but wow! Anyway, I will keep at it, no pain, no gain lol

you will see as time goes by, you will not care what people think, they do not have to face the consequences if you eat the wrong foods, they do not care about your health issues....just keep on doing what feels right.......tell everyone you are allergic to this or that....it s the best way out, and they leave you alone.
if you try explaining, most will just make fun of you and will not take you seriously.
been there, done that!!

when I m invited to somebody s house, I make sure I eat before I leave my house....

if I have a get together with close family, they all know I ll be there, but I bring my own lunch!! lol
those who adopt this lifestyle have a goal and are committed and convinced.

I have accepted things for which they are. I stopped feeling sorry for myself. I bought the book How to cook for our blood types. It is great.  I am going to make eating fun again. I was getting really bored with plain jane food. I am starting to make fun recipes to make food fun again. I made the millet/soy/spelt pancakes and put carob chips in it. I made tacos with Dr. D's recipe for tortillas. It was fantastic. I have never felt better. This is a choice that is best and  I just needed to turn my atttitude around. I am thrilled to find this diet.  I want to thank everyone again. This is a very educational and supportive forum. I have told my family that we have choices and mine is the BTD way. They can eat whatever they want, but to please respect my choices. My littlest daughter is seeing my weight loss and is becoming supportive. She sees how happy I am. I am starting to desire my walking. I did start a excercise tape. I used to have very strong mood swings and I can say I really notice they are gone. I have more energy. Everything is better. Yeah!!! I am excited again. Oh Thank-You Lola! ;D ;D ;D :)

Good luck with the walking. We live on an island and often walk to the ferry in the morning. Just a 25 minute walk through the woods and country lane but coming in the morning it really helps. I know that whatever else I do the rest of the day I have got some exercise in.

I remember growing up that I would hate to run around the block, but put a hockey stick in my hands and I could go for 8 hours non-stop. I just needed the mental challenge; exercise is all in the head. Find the right exercise routine, make it part of your day, not an extra chore, and everything else falls into place.

I just was giving an update. I have lost 34lbs. I do and go places that I never did before. I have more confidence since I feel and look better. My sister came over last weekend and I was telling her about the BTD diet. She put me down and made fun of it, but I stood up for my beliefs. My youngest daughter said to me after she left. Mom, I admire you. No matter what people say about your diet you don't let them sway your thinking, make you quit or question what your doing is stupid. I told her I believe in this. She said, mom I am proud of you, you do look great. She sees the results and that I am much happier. She is all for my diet. My dad and mom both said wow, this is working for you. My dad was always saying that I needed to do something about my weight for my health. I had a friend not agree with the wheat thing. She said wheat is good for you. I said well, that is what I thought to, but by cutting it out of my diet and corn, I feel so much better. Thank-You Dr. D and to all of you on here. I wanted to quit, but everytime I would come on here and read all the great information and how this has helped everyone. I would get all excited and be strong again.  :) :)  :) ;D  ;D  ;D

Here is a new update. I have had a few bumps in the road. I really notice when I have eaten something not on my list. It is amazing how terrible you feel. I have decided that it is not worth it. I have lost 45lbs. I walk 2 miles a day and have recently added a daily excercise tape. I am the happiest when I am excercising. Can you believe that? I used to dread it. (I mean dread.) I look great and feel great. I don't know how many times I can say thank-you to this diet, Dr. D and all of you on here. This diet works. It is the only one that has ever worked for me. All I can say to the newbies who read this, is be patient and kind with yourself. Read the information on this forum. Take one day at a time for change. That was the hardest for me. What ever you do, don't give up. It is the best thing you will ever do for your health, yourself and your family. ;)

Hi everyone, This is Valerie. I had to start over on here.
Well, it has been a long time! There has been many changes in my life. I could not afford internet, so I have not been able to be on the forum. I am honestly just plain exhausted and down in the dumps.I did lose 65lbs total. Then I fell off the wagon. I have been doing absolutely terrible for 4mos. I feel terrible. I look terrible. I try everyday to get back a going, but it is not working. It is too cold to walk outside. I joined the gym. What a joke. I do not enjoy that at all. My knees and hips hurt from the treadmill. I'm all confined inside with mirrors, tvs, and people. It is not peaceful or serene at all.I can not wait until I can walk outside again. I am out of the loop and do not know how to find my way back to the BTD. I remember how wonderful I felt. I just fall prey to the bad bad food. One of my problems is I get hungry so I reach for the easiest, fastest thing which is always unhealthy. I am still working at my new job and that is going well, but I did go back to my old job part-time to pay the bills. My husband divorced me. I started going to the bar with a girlfriend and drinking way too much. I do not do that anymore. I did not like it anyway. I just felt lost. I work 7 days a week and I do not know how to change that at this time. I drink free pop all day and eat fast food on the weekends. I catch myself benging, then feel absoutely awlful. I feel hopeless, exhausted and overwhelmed. I feel sick most of the time from what I am eating. The worst part of it all is that, I know better and feel guilty as all heck about not following what I know. All I want is to be back on the BTD and feel great again and walk outside. I do not have enough will power or the commitment. I know I am feeling sorry for myself. I am sorry for being such a downer, but it is the way I feel. Everyone is so positive and uplifting on here. I am glad that I can be on here again. Thank-goodness for Libraries.

Valerie, do you have another O friend who would be interested in going on the BTD with you?

It sounds like you're dealing with some food addictions.  I too have those tendencies (sugar!!!) and have found that if I am consistent with absolutely, strictly, religiously avoiding those trigger foods, the cravings really do go away after some time.  If you can make it through, the cravings will subside and you'll realize how much better you feel when you don't eat them.  

There's nothing worse than abandonment if you're overweight.  That was really the last thing you needed, huh?  See if you can find an O friend who needs to lose weight too and maybe y'all can do it together.  Have you thought of trying the GenoType diet?

Valerie your post was most timely. I read the whole thing today and was soooooooooo proud of you!!! Even when I got to the slip up.  It's okay. On BTD you can slip and get right back up and carry on. No one judges you. We're only here to help each other. I can use the help too. I WANT the 100% compliancy, I'm just having a hard time getting back to it. I just mentioned your thread to another member who is also having a hard time staying on track. So lookee there, even tho you fell off the wagon, you are still helping others in the same boat. You're still inspiring others to do better.  I know there are lots of us out there that have slipped, who want to do better. So let's all inspire one another and do it!!!  You can be our leader, if you'd like.  :K)

My Dearest Valerie ... thanks to Italybound, I read this thread and really glad that I did ... I'm NOT overweight; however, I've had a problem with binge eating starting in my twenties ... probably as a way to cope with stress/tension  AND especially in my dark moments ... that's what probably led to my digestive issues that started three years ago ... constant burping ...  bad digestion ...  irregular bowel movements ... bad taste in the mouth upon awaking ... bouts of constipation and/or diarrhea, anemic and a slew of other problems ... arghhhh

I have amazing periods where I eat VERY healthy ... and then something happens and I go back to my old ways ... I love to eat !! ... especially desserts !! ... and that's my downfall  ::)

Thank-you, Thank-you, The best thing is that I am helping others down in my dark place where I am right now. I am glad about that. I keep saying to myself, get it together, Valerie, but it has not happeed yet. I lost 65lbs total and have gained 30lbs back. I am very disgusted with myself. I do have food addictions which lead me into benging bad. It has the power over me and then leaves you with a great deal of guilt and shame afterwards. I will eat a whole box of 12 ice cream bars and not even realize it. I look down for another ice cream bar and the box is empty. I am like, they are all gone? Wow! it is hard when your doing so well and then you fall, it seems harder to pull yourself back up and start over again. I judge myself more harsh than anyone. Only buy healthy food.  I wish I can follow my own advice with two teen boys. But since I went to see Dr. D, I'm on a mission. I have 20 to go to hit my highest ideal weight range.

This is a book I've talked about before on this forum.  It's really, really good for explaining food addictions.  She recommends a diet plan, but of course you wouldn't follow that.  It helped me understand my addictions to food.

Sorry to hear about the emotional turmoil!  It sounds like eating is your way of dealing with the emotional hurt.  As you are able to move through the anguish and start focussing back on the importance of your health, you will be able to better control what you buy and choose to eat/drink.  This is a big bump in the road, but you are still 35 lbs to the good and have the knowledge to repeat and add to the good previously accomplished.  If you just read through the first of this thread again, you can refresh all of the information and continue where you fell off.  We all have major or minor bumps in this diet, but success comes to those who succeed more than they fail.

You are doing well!  Give yourself a pat on the back for remembering where the support is.

We had a thread going on food addiction a few weeks ago.

Valerie, I confess that I'm starting to slide.  It happens to all of us.  Try to eliminate the worst foods ASAP, the wheat and the white foods.  They're the ones that stimulate the appetite and cravings.

Thank-You everyone for all the wonderful insight and inspiring words. I started on the BTD today, once again, sorry. I just do not feel so hopeful yet. So far, so good. It is almost 1p.m. I am drinking green tea so I do not have caffeine withdrawls. I had those once, not a good thing. I am going to try to go for a walk after work. We will see. I am just going to take one thing at a time. Go with the flow. No expectations or goals at this point. Actually my goal is to make it through just one complete day back on the BTD. I know this is the answer to my life. Living the BTD way. I have eaten healthy so far today. I have also had trouble dealing with turning 40 this year. In a couple of months, I will be 41, maybe I will mellow out.  :)Thanks, for reminding me that I am still 35lbs ahead. It is so easy to concentrate on the negative.

That is a great idea Valerie. One thing at a time. If that means green tea is the only thing you change for a week or two, so be it. Not everyone can go cold turkey, and some that do, don't stick at that level. Present company included. :'(  So just do what you know you are comfortable with and what you feel like you can manage right now. You'll do fine. {{{HUG}}}

Falling off the wagon is a normal part of life, because life can be treacherous and the footing is slippery at times!  We have all gone through set backs, and I want to say that the important thing is to be compassionate with yourself.  

Pick yourself up again, when you are able, and take a look at yourself.  Offer yourself a big smile and a hug, and start moving in the direction that makes you happy.  It will get better and better.  

How about this for one idea:  Buy a lot of carbonated water, either club soda or bubbly mineral water, or something like that.  It's SO good for type O's, and you can drink it all day instead of soda pop.  That one change will help a lot.

Buy a lot of beneficials to stock your kitchen so that when you want to eat, you have choices that are good for you.  My favorite blood type book is LR4YT, and it is very motivating.  

Visit us when you can.  Having a community is very helpful.  Do you have access to a computer now, or can you get to a library or somewhere else that you can use one?

You're only as old as you feel, so eat right and feel better!  The more you do, the younger you are!  

So many people make a big deal about getting older, but they don't stop to think about the alternative...  Celebrate being alive and able to make decisions, even though some of them may not be the best.  Recognize and learn from the errors so they are beneficial eventually.  

You'll make it to your goals as long as you move forward more than you fall back.  No progress goes straight up!

Valerie, I just read through these recent posts, and my heart goes out to you.  It make me sad that you would burden yourself with guilt on top of all the physical and emotional suffering caused by eating poorly.  Guilt is something we should suffer only for immoral behavior, not just unwise or impulsive behavior.  While eating avoids is unwise (and probably impulsive), it sure isn't immoral!

So next time you catch yourself feeling guilty, you challenge that thought and feeling, look it in the eye, and tell it to hit the road!  You have no reason at all to feel guilty about what you eat.  Hang in there, we are cheering you on!

Keep up the good work, you are so much further ahead than you were 10 months ago. Progress is rarely linear and straightforward. If it was, it would be so easy it wouldn't be so unique. Just keep on going one day at a time and you will make it. Looking ahead to the very end can make the path daunting and not a little intimidating.

By the way, muscles have memory and if you were walking 2 miles a day a little while ago you will find your muscles will grow and respond faster than they did the first time!

Hey everybody,
I am doing great! I am still working 3 jobs. It has been 6mos since the divorce and I am doing o.k. I have lost 20lbs since I last wrote. I had to change my attitude from being negative to positive. I have to be honest, I have my days of following the BTD and days I don't. The days I don't, I feel it. It is amazing the difference in how your whole body feels when you eat c**p food. I am glad summer came along being able to get outside and walk again. It is a struggle everyday to watch what I eat. I know it is a mind set, but jeepers it is so hard with all the temptations. Finding a balance on how much to eat has been very hard. I have found that as long as I keep food choices healthy and size of food portions in moderation, I can manage things pretty well. Trying to stay positive is a difficult task, but excercise is the key there. It goes right along with the book that blood type o needs exercise to keep us happy. lol  Anyway, I am doing alright and that is great! Thank-You, to all of you on here that have given me support and encouragement throught the ups and downs.

Well, I am back!!!! Whew, I have not been on here for ages. I thought doing it my way again was the answer, so I made choices of eating bad, depression and working myself to death. It has been a very long winter. I have gained 20lbs in all the my worst areas and feel absoutely miserable I look like I have gained 50lbs. I am not on right track, but I am reading on here and have pulled my books back out. I am going to counseling. I have been divorced for a year now, which has been a good thing. I do know the BTD is the answer. I know alot of the depression comes from the bad food choices and then feeling bad for the choices. Anyway I do not have a lot to say except I am going to try everyday to get back what I had with the BTD. Thanks, Valerie

I am going crazy, I had the Mirena put in and I have gained like 25 lbs. Is that normal? Plus, I have other things that have changed since they put it in. I think I am going to get it taken out. I look and feel terrible. Has anyone tried to go get back on this diet everyday and never make it through the day? I am a very frustrated person today. Everyday I get up and say today is the day. Then someone wants McDonalds for breakfast and I give in. BAD! BAD! I do want to say, the 6 months I committed to this diet. I felt great, lost weight like crazy. It just makes me all happy when I think about it. I remember how good I felt, but I just do not seem to have it in me to want it bad enough. I ache, and feel terrible. hi valerie--

i would definitely get the mirena out if that's an option for you. hormonal birth control messes with LOTS of people. i choose to be on it right now, but i have never had a lot of problems from it, either.

the best tip i have for compliance is just to sit down and think for 3 minutes before you go to mcdonald's, or eat a non-compliant meal...think about how you will feel tomorrow (both physically and mentally). consider if it's worth it. i usually find it's not.

just make yourself sit there with your feelings and really think through the decision.

it's also good to have alternatives in mind...like if you want mcdonald's, can you get some hamburger and cook it up yourself? have it on an ezekiel roll with compliant toppings? make sweet potato fries?

i have to say...i'm a newbie still (one month on the BTD), but i have been astonished at how good compliant food tastes. i made a BTD zucchini bread last night, and it's about the best darn bread i have ever had, and so much healthier than so many alternatives.

well, you don't really know me, but i haven't had trouble with it  :o

i don't think it's ideal to take by any means (in theory i would be off of it), but for me it's about the only form of birth control that actually keeps me from getting pregnant, and since i've always tolerated it well, i stick with it  :-/

but i just wanted to tell anyone who's struggling with cravings...i don't try to quell mine. i mostly just try to find healthier ways of having what i want.

yes, in the BIG picture, the BTD is about revamping what you eat pretty profoundly. but in the day to day, trying to be happy and get through the day, sometimes you just have to bake that bread you're craving, or go to your favorite restaurant, or have (quinoa!) chips and salsa.

but that doesn't mean you can't do things to make that bread or those chips BTD-compliant, or order something BTD friendlier at the restaurant. some restaurants, like pulled pork stands, yes, you really can't get by in, but in many of my favorite places, i really can still eat at without consuming any major avoids (wheat, corn, dairy avoids).

i'm drawn to "cleaner" food type places, where they know and will tell you what's in their food, to begin with, which helps.

for example there's a local burger bar that sells organic grass-fed burgers. i went there and ordered one in a bowl, with no bun, and had it topped with sauteed spinach, feta, onions, grilled fresh pineapple, roasted red pepper, and pesto. and you know what? it was amazing! i didn't feel like i was missing out on a darn thing!!!

I always had a HORRIBLE time with it. Especially when I used the Depo-provera shot for a year... I was a raging expletive deleted AND gained weight.  :o

(Oh dear, my expletive was deleted!  :B ) Anyway, I have a thing called Essure now... it's permanent birth control, much easier than tubal ligation. And I love it!

Hi Everyone, This is still Valerie Kay, I could not remember my password so I had to start over. Like my new name, Valeria? Hee Hee I can not believe it has been over a year since I last posted. I read over all of the posts on the thread. It brought back a lot of feelings I remember. I have been on a battling roller coaster for the last year with all of the above going on. I have had a lot of changes in my life. I did have the Mirena removed. That was a good choice. I have changed jobs and moved. All three of my kids are grown. My youngest joined the Navy. I have two grandchildren. I have checked the Eat Right 4 Your Blood Type website so many times but I was not ready, I guess. I visited the site yesterday and it really made me think when I read Angela's post above. There were other posts that made me think about where I am today so I joined the message boards again and I am ready to be honest with myself and start again. I do not like exercise, but I am going to start walking a little. I am not stressed out and I am not blaming my self anymore. I know I have a food addiction. I have gained all of my weight back and plus. I gave up and through my scale away a long time ago. I have not followed the BTD since I last posted. I have started a thousand times but never stuck to it. I would sit there and eat noncompliant foods feeling terrible and knowing it was going to continue and then feeling guilty that it does not have to be this way. I feel terrible, ache everywhere, migraine headaches, no energy and my legs and hads fall a sleep. The positive note on this is that I know I will feel better being back on the BTD diet. The BTD diet has always been with me and I am still excited. I am back and watch me roar.

I made it through yesterday not cheating. I wanted to real bad, but I read a lot of testimonials and remembered what Goldie and Angela posted. I am having caffeine withdrawals and pretty shacky and feel like having a low blood sugar spell. I ate an egg/toast/green tea for breakfast, but I feel real bad this moring. I will go have some grapes for snack. I did not have a chance to exercise yesterday, but I will do it this evening. It does not help that I am not in a good mood due to financials and people in general. I will pray and that will help. This is soooooo :) hard, but I can not keep living the way I was. I was spending money to poison myself with all of the food loaded with toxins and preservatives.  I will take five minutes at a time if that is what it takes. I know what the reward is for all of this hard work. I keep reminding myself how I never felt better in my life when I followed the BTC diet. Thank goodness it is Friday. I will have the weekend to take care of myself. Give me strength, will power and commitment, please. :) Thanks everyone for your support.

Well, it is Monday again. I have started and fell off the road, started and fell, started and fell again. Once again I have started this morning. I will keep trying until I make it. One day it will happen. I am really not sure what else to do. I was thinking about a saying I know about walking and falling in a hole and every time you walk the same path you fall in that same hole. Well, I changed one thing this morning from the other mornings. I got up and walked with my puppy. We shall see if the change will keep me fram falling in the same hole. Wish me luck. NHG what a neat poem.  and very good advice I must say that as an O gatherer I have a hard time getting my excerise in and if I don't get some in the morning the rest of the day is a lazy day. Note:  I am not sure if I've ever seen that full poem in writing, but it is often-referred to and paraphrased in 12-step meetings.  I know because I used to go to ACOA (adult children of alcoholics) meetings years ago.  It is a very cool poem.

I LOVE your attitude.  YES, please do keep trying until you make it.  That is how you make it.  A few years ago, I was lower than low and wondering how I got there AGAIN (i.e., how did I gain ALL the weight back and then some?), and I was in a state of despair and dismay, BUT I never left the forum, never "left" the diet (although I was doing a lot of non-compliant things, but I kept trying even though I was struggling and not "succeeding"), and I really just hoped (I'd love to say I "had faiith" but, honestly, I thought I would never be able to lose the weight again, but I HOPED I would and I was not prepared to give up trying and accept where I was) that one day, it would all come together.  And sure enough, it did.  There were a lot of factors, like the GenoType Diet coming along, but it wouldn't matter if the GTD came along if I had GIVEN UP, would it?  No, I stuck it out.

And I also LOVE what you said about changing one thing.  One thing.  When I first began to turn things around, it was before I decided to switch to the GTD in earnest, so I was still basically BTDing, and I just decided, okay, just go back to basics.  You know what to do.  You got this.  Go back to basics, and just be humble and do baby steps.  Stop the Kettle brand potato chips.  Stop it.  Just kick out the big avoids, that's all I can do right now, is what I told myself.  So I did.  And from there, I did one more thing and one more thing, and then I decided, okay, let me really give this GTD thing a try.  And let me try to walk half an hour per day.  And that is when it really turned around.

But it wasn't just one thing, like the GTD or like walking every day, or like giving up the chips, though those were all huge.  It was all the, for lack of a better term, FAILURES I had experienced over the years, all the times I fell into that same BLEEP hole!!!!!!  Some of us HAVE to fall in and fall in a few times before we really understand where the hole is, how to avoid it, etc.  We can ONLY learn what our patterns are and what our triggers are and what works for us and what doesn't by falling into that d*mn hole.  No one can TELL you about the hole, you have to fall into the sucker.

It's all very "Wizard of Oz", really.  Glenda couldn't simply tell Dorothy to click her heels together three times to get back to Kansas.  No, she had to go through AAAALLLL of that loooooooong, twisty, turny journey on the Yellow Brick Road.  All of it, she couldn't skip one experience.  That was the only way she could learn what she needed to learn.  But she never gave up.  That kid was intrepid.  She said it herself, that all she kept saying to everybody was, I want to go home, I want to go home.

Well, your attitude will take you home.  Don't give up.  Stick to it.  And just do what you can do.  If it is walking the puppy, then walk that little doo-dad for all he or she is worth and be proud of yourself!

You're going to make it!

Okay, third and final post of this particular spate (  ;D ):

Valeria, if you miss your caffeine from coffee, please try kukicha green tea.  Kukicha means "twig tea", as they use both the leaves and the stems, which results in, get this (two positives a'comin'): stronger, richer, more complex flavor, with LESS caffeine than even regular green tea.  It has very little caffeine, yet it gives you just that little jazzy lift.  I LOVE the stuff and guzzle it all day long at work (but curiously, not at all on weekends).  I put one bag of Haiku brand kukicha tea, and one bag of Celestial Seasonings pure peppermint tea, in a big mug of boiling water to steep.  I leave the bags in there the entire time (even when I'm drinking the tea), the longer the better.  I know some folks 'round these here parts say only brew green tea for five minutes, but I say, pffffft, the longer the BETTER, baby!

Try it, you'll like it!

Deblynn, I'm retired, now, but you brought back memories of my taking the stairs instead of elevator wherever I worked.  And, during the lunch time I would grab some of my co-workers and say, "come on, let's do the stairs", and we would walk up, down, up and down the stairs and feel just great that we had actually accomplished some exercise!  So, keep it up, deblynn.  Also, same with the parking lot although I can't say I enjoy walking during a rainstorm or snow.  :)

PT, I didn't know that poem was used at ACOA.  It makes sense, though.  Great choice.

i have to use the stairs every day, my house is two story.  ;D just remember every time you want something what it will do to you. i think specifacly of what that item will do to me. french fried=sluggish motabalisim, bread=tired, dairy=mucus and so on. some things like the preservatives i just =poisen. it really is a mind set and if you set your mind the rest will fallow. i know that sounds like it was typed for A's but it is still true no matter your blood type.

It's good to have this thread up and running again, and good to see you back Valeria!  :)

One of the most important things for me is to stock my kitchen with a lot of food choices that are good for me.  If my own kitchen is full of poison, how could I possibly manage my appetite if I get hungry.  I just don't buy foods that aren't good for my body.

If those occasional time come up when you have no other options, then eat what you have to, with a smile.  But in your own kitchen at least, take inventory and provide yourself with things you like so they are there waiting for you.  Practice cooking with them so that you come up with some dishes you know you will enjoy eating.  This is a powerful way to form new habits.

We are creatures of habit.  Choose your own habits . . this is personal power!  (ok)

Wow!!!! Wow!!! That is all I can say. I am completely speachless after reading the posts above. I was sitting at my desk with grapes in my drawer when racing crazy thoughts of cheating, cheating and I went into the kitchen where I work and I was going to eat that cake with the yummy frosting, but I looked at it and said no go read some testimonials so I walked into the bathroom and talked to myself and went back to my desk and read all of the above posts. OMGosh!!!! Thank-You! Thank-You, Thank-You! Wow! I am going to go rinse off my grapes and I will make it through this spell. I will be honest, I am struggling with every moment. I am going to re-read all of the above posts again. I love that poem NHG and your wisdom Peppermint Twist and Thanks Victoria, I am happy to be back. I need all of you guys. I flunked out on Monday and Tuesday, but so far today I am good. My daughter joined the Navy and she will ship out next June 2011, Her graduation ceremony is in August and I want to look so nice for her and myself for this event. I am a 100lbs over weight. I am going to print the poem and keep it on my refrigerator. Puppy and I are walking tonight. I am going to make spaghetti using glutein free noodles, organic sauce and I will make it today. Hi Valerie,

I'm really new to this. I am doing a degree in Naturopathy, and the unit I've been doing this semester is Food as Medicine. It's a real eye opener and this week, the ER4YT diet was mentioned. I looked at this diet many years ago and didn't do it because it would eliminate many of my favourite foods. However, I just bought the GenoType Diet book and it's fantastic. It's so interesting and working out where you fit is fascinating. I think I've worked mine out correctly (thinking of buying the software to check). I think I'm a Gatherer. I'm a type A and am about to work out what I can eat and how to cook/prepare it etc. I'm getting married in April and have just learned that my fiance's visa is about to be approved (he's Canadian) so the wedding plans have now gone from being on pause, to full steam ahead.

I've read every post on this thread and I agree with the others, you're a very brave woman. One suggestion I have for you that works for me (most of the time), is if you feel like junk or something that's on your avoid list, if sitting and thinking about it doesn't work, try this technique.... Think to yourself, I'll have that when I've done this... and then go and do something like weed the garden, go for a long walk, wash the dog (or wash the cat if you really want to live dangerously  :D  ).... Also, make sure you drink plenty of water too. The whole point of this is that by the time you've finished whatever you decided to do, more often than not, you've either forgotten about it or you just don't want it anymore. If you finish and you do still want it, try having some protein and drinking water and that should help too. Don't get discouraged Valerie, your strength will win out over any bad food choices. You inspire us all......  ;D

Valeria... welcome and congrats.. for progress.. For me doing the will strength test does not work, but I am good at substituting.. like I really only want to feel I belong .. so I eat a small bit.. not the whole cake not he whole slice not even all the cake, maybe just some frosting.. offices are hard..  they tempt you every which way.. I have dark choc 85 % and eat a fingernail size.. that is enough to get rid of cravings, social eating and the like,, I never get so far as to be hungry, I eat to often, but my portions of food are 95% Beneficials so even if I eat more of them that is no SIN.. I am doing it to stay compliant.  ON the occasion when there is other food I try and seldom succeed to stay away.. but still I try to eat the jelly without the bread, or the meat spaghetti sauce without spaghetti, and I eat the butter rather than dry pretzels, so I cheat but not nearly like others who eat whole candy bars, loafs of bread, or other such foods..I cut thin slices of a bagel the other way so a few slices with food on them feels like many, I hide to choc in a bag or high up so I don't see it.. and I keep prunes (cut in small slices)or other things in the freezer, anything not to see it all day.  BUT what seems to work really well is pumpkin seeds.. a few and I am fine, walnuts well I ate them by the pound as did I with all allowed foods for years and still lost weight.. for what is Beneficial.. I am allowed..  then there are no real (meat) restrictions for me, all just to never let me be hungry!! -- so many ways to make it and you will to.. good luck!!! 8)

I don't want to burst your bubble, but a Blood Type A person can not be a Gatherer.  Using the Advanced Tables in the back of the GTD book are the most accurate, except for SWAMI...

Bummer (unhappy) I was wondering about that when I read the full descriptions of the genotypes. I knew that Gatherer was mostly O's and some B's but when I did all my measurements, it came up with Gatherer and it sounded so much like me. Now when I look in the back of the book, it comes up with either Teacher or Explorer (don't know my secretor status). I think I'm going to buy the SWAMI (is it downloadable or do you have to wait to get it in the mail?). Thanks for the help guys. Will update you soon. It's still fascinating. (sunny)

Warrior is significantly different than Gatherer, but I think you'll be healthier following it.   ;D  ..  Much success!

There are probably import rules and possibly taxes as well as long distance shipping charges that make the NZ cost of the products more...  Please don't be too disappointed if you get an e-mail informing you that you'll need to pay more than the US price.  Your health will still be worth it!

I went to the Dr. and I weigh 232lbs. I was very relieved that I had not gained back to 255lbs where I started. I am still on this roller coaster ride of eating good and then going down hill. Im not beating myself up too much. I start out really strong in the morning and then become weaker and weaker before the day ends. That is a good idea Goldie about eating just a tiny bit of something that is not a good choice, but to be really honest, I can not stop at that. I justify it very well. I am sitting here taking really big breathes, cause I have come to the point that I have to do something and I am disgusted with myself with the strength. My goodness it is food! Why does it have to be sooo hard. I was reading the beginning posts when I started and I am being hard on myself. It has been three years and I could say back then, I did not know better, but I can not say that now. I feel absolutely terrible today. I know if I can stick to this for three days, I will feel so much better. I want to feel the way I did before when I was following the BTD diet so bad. It is all about change and it is so hard. Thanks for all of the words of incouragement. I just want to go to bed. I apologize for being so down. I will start again tomorrow.

That approach doesn't work for me either. I do much better with " I can't have that at all; I'll eat something entirely different." I sometimes go overboard with portion sizes and frequencies,  but I don't eat the "poison foods" at all.

That "eat just a small portion" works well for treats: desserts baked with rice flour and sugar or agave; all neutral ingredients but I know it's not healthy to eat too much. I can easily limit myself to one small piece of cake after a large holiday meal. I have a harder time if I eat the cake when I'm genuinely hungry.

Avoids need to be totally avoided, for me anyway. I've also found that eating too many carbs early in the day leads to carby cravings all day long.Cooked veggies mixed with protein are fine, as is a little bit of juice (1oz) in a large mug of green tea, and the first thing I drink each morning is yerba mate with 1 tsp of blackstrap molasses and aobut an ounce of rice milk.   But if I start the day with a portion of grains or sweets (leftover cake made  from compliant ingredients, for example) then I'm tired and "snacky" all day.

If you're having a lot of problems with carb cravings, take a look at what you're eating at breakfast and lunch. You may be able to eliminate a lot of cravings by cutting your AM carbs and saving grains for dinnertime.

Wishing somebody "good luck" is basically a way of sending  positive energy. Somebody who "feels lucky" has more confidence that things will work out in a good way.

There definitely is luck in the world; I have no control over how fast the person in front of me is driving, or whether I'll make all the green lights, or if the store will be out of stock of an item I wanted.  But I don't need to let those things affect my moods.

Valeria: give yourself permission to ease into this diet. Do the best you can, and aim to be 95% compliant within a few weeks. It's OK if you eat "avoids" away from home, or if you use up the food already in the house and then replace it with compliant alternatives, or even if you continue eating foods that contain small amounts of avoids.

Once you're eating mostly beneficial and neutral foods, you can evaluate how much those "hidden avoids" are interfering with health, and then make more changes at that time if necessary. You do NOT need to do all of this at once, nor do you need to feel guilty if you aren't able to do so.

I agree with ruthie's approach to when to eat carbs.  Carbs early in the day can set you up for a days' worth of cravings.  Type O's thrive on a high protein/low carb breakfast, and saving the carbs for the evening meal when it has the effect of helping you relax and sleep.

I have had it! I woke this morning and felt worse than ever. I dragged myself out of bed and I could of cared less to take a shower and get ready for work which is an everyday event. I can not find anything to wear due to my weight gain. I think about calling in sick everyday, to do what, stay in bed?

I have been doing terrible with choices on food and I feel it. I ache everywhere, hurt when I touch my skin, My head hurts when I comb my hair, I am completely exhausted, I have no energy, migraine headaches, no motivation and everything is suffering because of it. Scary, I know. I am so hard on myself for not having enough will power, which makes me depressed. I am going down hill  :'( :'( :'( and I have to do something. I know this program works. I felt wonderful and all of the above went away when I followed the E4YBT.
Today is the day for the life change!
It is almost 5:00pm and I feel ok. I usually do not make it through lunch. All goes down hill after lunch. I feel completely worthless the rest of the day at work and go home and fall on the couch. I am mad  >:(  >:( >:( and hopefully that will help guide me to success. I feel and sound like a drama queen, but this is heartwrenching. It completely comes down to how I feel about myself. When you feel terrible, you look terrible and then everything else follows. I am getting my hair cut after work so I do not go right home to an empty house and fall on the couch. One change at a time.  :) :) :)I can do it!

so that is all .. some spices..and nuts..  and I still don't lose.. unless I walk around and that just is tough...

but I don't eat breads, no grains no starches, no dairy, no coffee, and doing that AT LEAST I don't gain weight.. but its a struggle..

when I go out, I have pumpkin soup - still allowed..

not allowed occasionally seldom on apple/ no skin, or on ice-cream cone.. or some slice of cheese, or or.. but mostly I am beneficials or super..

Valeria..... I still encourage you to keep up your spirit.. keep losing keep walking if you can, or put your snacks down the steps so walking to it is farther away.. or I am out of suggestions as I am struggling.. but I do the best I know how, so I have no guilt.. going to bed as early as possible helps but I wake up ..

for me this diabetes cr.p is really a hefty bag to carry.. it leaves no fun in life.. other then If I found a place to go dancing..

I went to the Dr. and I weigh 232lbs. I was very relieved that I had not gained back to 255lbs where I started. I am still on this roller coaster ride of eating good and then going down hill. Im not beating myself up too much. I start out really strong in the morning and then become weaker and weaker before the day ends. That is a good idea Goldie about eating just a tiny bit of something that is not a good choice, but to be really honest, I can not stop at that. I justify it very well. I am sitting here taking really big breathes, cause I have come to the point that I have to do something and I am disgusted with myself with the strength. My goodness it is food! Why does it have to be sooo hard. I was reading the beginning posts when I started and I am being hard on myself. It has been three years and I could say back then, I did not know better, but I can not say that now. I feel absolutely terrible today. I know if I can stick to this for three days, I will feel so much better. I want to feel the way I did before when I was following the BTD diet so bad. It is all about change and it is so hard. Thanks for all of the words of incouragement. I just want to go to bed. I apologize for being so down. I will start again tomorrow.

Here's a suggestion. Maybe take baby steps???  Tomorrow,  take it one hour at a time.  Here is one of the things that has helped me in the past.  I write up a phrase of something I want to achieve as if I've already achieved it.  

I am healthy and eating right.
I am at my ideal weight.
I have moved into my new house.

And I tape it up all over the house and I say it often.  Hundreds of  times.  It's a positive reinforcement of your goal.

See?

Other times, I've focused on eliminating one type of avoid at a time.  Recently, it was to eliminate my candy.  After I mastered that for a period of time, then I add in something else. Currently, I'm avoiding grains and eating grain free.  I'm on day 24 I think.

  We always learn something new from what we perceive (at the time) is a failure.  So look back on today as learning and look forward to tomorrow.

Andrea, that is a great blog! :) :) :) I got tears. I forgot to take care of myself. Thank-You for reminding me of that. I am 100lbs over weight and I need to take a deep breath and think before I put anything in my mouth. Will this be taking care of myself. I made it through yesterday, but it took a lot of self talk. I got my hair cut and it looks better. I took the dog for a walk and that was good. I feel better today emotionally. I do have a headache which is from caffeine withdrawal. I am drinking hot green tea. Thanks,Kimonokat I will take one day at a time, even if it is 5 minutes at a time to get through and I will put a positive thought on my frig and mirror.  Goldie, tonight when I get home, I am going to go through all of my food and give away the choices not healthy for my blood type. I applaud you for jumping in cold turkey, but understand that it is the hardest way to make it stick.  It does take some time to get used to cooking with compliant foods and putting meals together.  Don't beat yourself up if you have a meal that isn't perfect, look for ways to improve it.  In my experience, self-discipline is more about the mind than the physical...  If you tell yourself something is hard, it is, but if you tell yourself that it may be a little struggle, but it is doable and we are going to get through it for the better, it seems to go by more easily...

Much success on moving forward to your goal weight and good health that comes with it...

Well, New Day! I made it through yesterday!!!! It truly was a difficult day. The green tea did not help much with the caffeine withdrawal. I had the worst headache in the world and my body was all messed up. I really really wanted to eat some poor food choices snap me out of probaly shock. Got to love cold turkey. I am all or nothing person and that is who I am, but because of the posts above saying break in easy. I did balance. I went and got a cola and drank only 5 sips. Yeah!!!!  I hope I am over the caffeine addiction. I stuck to my diet and walked the dog.  I packaged up all the avoids in box. Out of sight, out of mind. I can do it is stuck on my frig and bathroom mirror.

I have been thinking about what ABJoe wrote.

See if you can find any yerba mate near you. That's a tea that's high in caffeine, but is healthy for Os. I like to start my day with yerba mate and then have green tea later in the day.

I can understand the all or nothing approach because I think I'm somewhat like that.  We just have to know ourselves and be honest with ourselves.  Some people are all or nothing, meaning that they will go all out on something new, only to drop it like a hot potato when it feels difficult.

I went into the BTD many years ago, full force, because it made utter sense to me, and I was that committed to rebuilding my health.  It was not always easy, but over the years, it has proven to be a powerful and successful way of taking care of my body.  I've never reconsidered, and I'm not a person to do anything half-heartedly.

Hi Valeria

I just wanted to say that I think all of us struggle especially at first.  I KNOW I feel best when I am completely compliant, but have many times "gone off the wagon".  It seems to take feeling lousy again to bring me back.  I find that I have to keep my HEALTH in mind every time I reach for food, instead of thinking of weight loss.  I don't have as much as you to lose, but I do have many health and auto-immune issues that are greatly affected by what I eat.  I absolutely know this, but because doctors, friends, and so-called experts are saying something completely different it makes it more difficult to stick with it.   Eating around co-workers, friends, and family can make you feel very deprived (especially as an O).

One thing that may help is to start out the first week by just cutting out the biggest problem for O's and most other blood types which is wheat.  When I first started the BTD I removed wheat, then later corn, soy, and then dairy.  Take the big ones out slowly and add in more of the good veggies, etc.  My challenge for myself right now is coming up with more recipes that are quick and easy since I am single and only cook for myself.  I really don't like spending so much time in the kitchen just for one meal, but there really isn't much I can eat unless I do the work.

I, like you, seem to need the support of the forum to remember that I am not alone in this and that it really does work and it is a lifestyle NOT a diet.  Even if I don't post very much, just reading the words of others who are in similar situations and are working for their own health in the same way really helps me.

Hmmm, makes me think that I need to explore a BTD support group in my area.  It would be nice to talk to other people in person who are doing the same thing.  A potluck lunch of compliant BTD dishes (labeled according to type)  would be fun!

I printed this whole thread out and read it bit by bit and I now feel like I have gone through the ups and downs with Valerie/Valeria!  :'(

First, I think you need to consider seeing a therapist/counselor.  Your issues with your self esteem are heartbreaking and I think that maybe you don't really truly believe that you are worth the hard work it takes to lose weight and get healthy.  That mindset needs to change.  

I am also an "all or nothing" person. (maybe it is a trait of 0's) I went cold turkey but I was prepared for this as I had been on the Maker's Diet (Jordin Ruben) earlier in the year and it has similar avoids in some areas.

I would suggest a few things for you:
Ezekiel bread!  I LOVE this stuff.  I can have it for toasted for breakfast (with an egg or with butter and honey or jam) it is sooo tasty and helps reduce that feeling of "carb deprivation"

Prunes!  You can bring a tupperware container to work and munch on them whenever the sweet tooth starts nagging.

Frozen Grapes!  Oh my gosh!  These are heaven for me.  I love to have snacks and treats on hand at home for my TV viewing pleasure and these are so nice, I don't even eat regular grapes anymore.  Buy 'em when they are cheap and toss the bags in the freezer.  Next day they are perfect.

Rye crackers!  READ THOSE LABELS!  I love rye crackers but many brands are mostly wheat!  Wasa makes a whole rye cracker and I can eat them plain but I also like them with goat cheese.  Yum yum!

Bowls of Apples and Bananas (not too expensive) and whatever other yum-tastic fruit you like for easy quick snacking.

Baby carrots

Also try chopping up your cooking veggies (ie: garlic, onion, bell peppers etc) on the weekends and store them in containers in the fridge.  That way when it's dinner time you can grab your protein and throw in some veggies quickly.  

Dark Chocolate.  Yeah, it has sugar in it but buy the 70% or more and take a square and suck on it when you really need a chocolate fix.

Finally, if you are going to overeat, try to overeat your allowed foods (10,000 grapes or 25 rye crackers) instead of those ice cream bars or pastries.

I too have struggled over and over again. I am kinda a conspiracy theorist and have gotten into a nich where I'm thinking corpritists/hospitals want us sick and/or fat. They put chemicals in our food to keep us addicted. They keep us sick to prescribe things that give us other side effects so we can get more prescriptions. Huge corporations are influencing what we should/shouldn't eat. Getting myself healthy, away from the food addictions to becme healthier is now my goal. It seems to be working. This my not be for you but if you look at the whole picture. Not just what you're eating, maybe this will help.

I seen a counselor for a year and half. I finally quit due to admitting that I was not willing to make any changes in myself. I wanted to stay a victim.

I read elevenhounds post over and over and I took the above quote personal and was mad. I then printed the whole thread and read it all. I did not believe what I was reading. I always wrote straight from my heart. Seeing it in black and white really was hard. I was embarrassed and ashamed so I went back into denial and stayed miserable.

I have thought about what you wrote above over and over the last few months. You are so right and I want to thank you SO much for writing what you did!!! I needed someone to tell me straight. My counselor did not. He sugar coated everything.

I am going back on this diet and work on my self esteem.

Hi everybody,

I am still struggling, but the blood type diet is always on my mind and in my heart. I will keep trying until I succeed.
I have great news!!
My new daughter in-law has gained a lot of weight in the last year and she borrowed my book.
I also found out my ex-husband is on the diet. That makes me chuckle due to this is probaly the only thing he has listened to me about in 20yrs. He went on the diet a few years back and found how amazing it is and how great he felt.
My daughter brought up the diet to her boyfriend and I told him about it and I just found out he is on the diet.
My other daughter told me, mom, your right about eating healthy and using more natural decisions in her life. That makes me smile.
I have such passion inside me about this diet and I know it works.

Hi!

I am very new to the BTD but seeing amazing results. I am a 36 year old female in a competitive Ph.D. program. I am originally from the west coast and am in Indiana.

As a child, I had asthma and a slew of allergies. I would break out when eating spaghetti during my teens. An avocado face mask made my skin break out in hives. I am of Asian descent but had a serious aversion to sesame oil. It turns out B pos like myself are not supposed to eat any of these things!

During my first year in the Ph.D. program, I came down with pneumonia and ended up being hospitalized for three days. I had to do a medical withdrawal for that semester and have been feeling like I was still sick until recently. Just last year, I was diagnosed with a Vitamin D deficiency. I initially thought it was adrenal insufficiency (I have a mild case of that but the endocrinologist said the Vit D was the bigger issue). Well, they gave me rx vit D and I felt better. Slightly better.

I finally got sick and tired of feeling sick. I was always tired and could barely do anything after I came home from school. I was doing research online and came across this wonderful diet regimen. I decided to go cold turkey and that was as of Monday morning.

It has not even been a full week for me on this diet but I am already experiencing a serious decrease of my allergy symptoms (esp. the asthma, sinus, and pesky eye allergies), no more brain fog (I can actually retain what I read), higher energy levels, and just overall feeling of health.

I was running late for classes yesterday and I forgot my greek yogurt, papaya, and honey mix (breakfast or huge snack). I was going to have it for lunch. I ended up getting a hard boiled egg and a bottle of water (egg is a neutral for me). By the time I came home, I was tired and feeling sick again. I realized that the food from the BTD was acting like my "real medicine".

My parents are amazed at my progress and are following the diet, too.

I don't think I will be able to go off the diet. Even having to skip a meal and substitute with something else made me feel terrible! I do not know how I survived prior to this (well, I was running on empty).

I am hopeful that I can finish my program and be the professor I want to be. I had thought about dropping out because I could not keep up with the program physically.

I just got the other Dr. D books (cooking, living, and the GTD - the Borders in my area is closing so all the books were on sale) and skimmed through them. I found out I am a Nomad and I can fine tune my diet even more.
