The day before yesterday, I ran out of ghee and went shopping yesterday and got some organic unsalted butter.  It was so hot that I did not want to turn the oven or the top burner on so I thought I would wait a day or so.  Today, I had a craving for it and decided I was going to make some anyhow.  When I turned on the oven...nothing...no heat.  The burners work so that means there is a fuse out somewhere as the plug-in on it doesn't work either.  I really don't care to make it on the stove anymore so I was kinda stuck at what to do.  Then...I remembered the BBQ.  I have made cookies and cakes on it...why not ghee?  So...out comes my trusty corningware ghee dish and three pounds of butter.  Yes...as most of you know I like to do things in bulk.   I thought about just doing one batch, in case I ruined it, but no... not me...the whole bunch went in.  I turned the BBQ on and got the temperature up to 350 F and placed the dish (no lid) on the right side of the grill and only had the left side burner on.  I put down the lid and left it while the kiddies and I walked out to the mall.  We were gone approximately an hour and forty-five minutes.   By the time I got back the foam was all on top of the golden liquid and I skimmed most of it off and let the rest come to a slow boil.  It stayed on for another three quarters of an hour and came out perfect like it does in the oven.  I strained it through cheese cloth and a metal strainer into two glass containers and it is Yummilicious.  So there you go people...you can do it this way. (thank you Sarah for the oven method otherwise I may not have thought of doing it this way)...especially when it is +34 C out and you want to keep your house cool. :D

Very inventive!
I made my very first batch (stove top) on Sunday. I think it went a little long as it is dark in color. The taste is still great,though. When my husband came home he asked if I had been making cotton candy. ha!
A question about ghee... is it supposed to  be grainy? Mine isn't real grainy, but I feel it.

Sometimes it is, but don't worry. It seems to depend on the quality and batch of the original butter...

Thanks Drea, I used salted non-organic this time around. I'll be trying a higher quality next time. I guess I just was scared of using an expensive butter my first go-round.
I'm almost giddy to try it again.
Should we be limiting our ghee intake? Just kidding... it is just so tasty. i'm keeping it to about a tablespoon a day.

i have the grainy result really everytime...but its no prob...when its melted there's no grainy...the stuff is just too good...

if you 'cook' it until it is a little darker, it has a bit of a dif flavor than the more yellow ghee. I really prefer the darker color/flavor myself.  :)
I've never thought of the smell of ghee cooking/baking as cotton candy, but it is heavenly just the same. Usually at some point in the making of ghee here, I walk out and back into the house. It's definitely a feel good smell!   ;D
hey debra+, thanks for sharing that BBQ tip..........I will certainly give that a try IF I can convince the DH to give me some of 'his' space on the grill .  ;)

Thank you for sharing your discovery debra+ of making ghee on the B-B-Q--very helpful and interesting tip--especially with summer around the corner when more people will be spending less time in the kitchen cooking over the stovetop and using the oven.

Great idea!  I made my first batch on the stove last night and it's delicious!  I had some on some sprouted grain toast this morning--I'll never go back now!   :D

For some reason, I thought it'd be liquid  :B

It is a liquid when first made and then turns to a solid and can be grainy depending on the type of butter used.  Less grainy with organic and unsalted, but still there.  Also. depends on the heat of the kitchen whether it stays a solid.  Now that summer is here and the warm weather...mine tends to be abit more liquidy. ;)

We make ours in the BBQ too, it has great temperature control.   :P   John.
