Well, I guess it had to happen:  now I can't even have sugar.

I cut out all dairy from my diet about ten years ago.  

Then, after reading ER4YT, it took my almost a year for it to really become apparent to me that wheat was such a problem for me.  So eventually I cut it out, along with just about all other major starches, except for rice.

Then it came time to tackle oils, because it really took me awhile to notice that even that so many of the major oils were actually messing me up, too.  

I think that's why it's taken me so long to really implement this diet right and notice the full health benefits:  because, despite Dr. D's assurances and citations of research and efficacy, I still have to notice the connections myself.  

But, I honestly think that's a strength, to have a product elicit subconscious doubt and then be absolutely verified through each individual validating it for themself.

Finally, I come to sugar.  And you know what?  I've finally noticed that it inflames my sinuses and all my sensitive linings.  I just can't have it... the reaction my body has to it, is almsot immediate.  

So now I'm basically down to only the most primitive foods:  animal proteins, primitive vegetables, fruits, rice, and certain beans.  

This nonnie physiology is so darn primitive and finicky.

Ronagon,
I believe from personal experience that sugar is one of the worst culprits for disease and inflammation.
It most definitely raises my intra-ocular pressure within 12 hours and the pressure can stay raised for several days.
Not to mention it's effect on my digestion and joints.

Joyce,

Yeah, I've noticed problems with it, too.  I really can only handle a very low-yield sweetener, like agave.  I could handle vegetable glycerin, too, except it tastes funky.  And molasses is right out, because the taste is just too rude.

All illnesses feed off sugar so it's best to stay away.  Oh if only I could  :'( :'(

I've also noticed that I can't eat sugar and do much better when I keep away from most grain products...  I have even been away from "sweet" vegetables for the last week.

You are making these food and body connections in a natural process.  Because you are letting your body determine how it reacts to certain avoids; this evidenced, overt knowledge will allow you to be more cognizant of how certain avoids affect your body.

I can't tolerate any sugars whatsoever. Not even fruits. At times I feel pretty much deprived. But if I eat them darn avoids I suffer them darn consequences...sigh

The O-nonnie diet seems like the most primitive diet of all.  It's that unbelievably simplistic and primal:  red meat, dark greens, no dairy or grains.  It's like I'm a chimpanzee!

But, of course, what chimpanzees eat seaweed?

I completely agree - I am back on the diet after a long time away and I find it IMPOSSIBLE!!  I still am struggling with the coffee and wheat.  I can't seem to find the inner strength to be so self- disciplined. HELP! How does one do this?

This diet makes me feel amazing but I just can't seem to get back in to it. Does anyone have any words of wisdom? As an O nonny -nothing seems to agree with me except veggies, protein and fruit.  Uggh! I love cookies and coffee and bagels and cream cheese!!!!!

It takes a certain amount of turning your head away from avoid foods and simply refusing to give in.  C'mon, don't call it self-discipline, call it stubbornness.  "I'm too stubborn to give in to these sugar cravings.  They will not get the best of me.  I can beat it.  Tee-hee!  I will win!"

Speaking of fructose in B-12, my AB daughter gets red eye circles if I give her anything with the tiniest amount of fructose in it.  So much for chewable Cs.

If I have a little sugar, I can't stop eating.  And it's not just the flavor.  If I make a pie with agave nectar, I have no trouble stopping at one piece.  But sugar is addictive.  Somebody left some blueberry pie at my house after a potluck dinner a few weeks ago and I decided I'd eat half a piece.  By the end of the day all three pieces were gone and I enjoyed every bite ... and regretted it.  My heart started beating hard and fast and I couldn't stop eating it.  On and on and on, all afternoon I kept coming back and taking just a couple of more bites, telling myself it would be the last.  I kept eating it despite the way my heart was reacting.  I absolutely couldn't stop.  Then suddenly I looked down at it and it grinned evily up at me and I said, "You will not get the best of me.  Into the garbage you go."  There was only about two bites left, and I could have easily fit it into my stuffed stomach, but I wouldn't give in anymore.  I pitched it and laughed at the freedom, then cringed at the way I felt.  It took me two days to work through that pie.  Two aweful days.  It wasn't worth it.  And I haven't had any sugar since.

Just be stubborn.  "I will not allow [sugar] to control my life."

The first thing I would ask is whether or not you've yet noticed an actual, physical difference between being on, and being off, the diet.  First of all, did you ever do any kind of yeast cleanse?  Have you tried any of the anti-yeast or anti-fungal protocols in The Complete Blood Type Encyclopedia?  Have you tried Deflect?  As an O-nonnie myself, these things made a huge difference for me.

The reason I ask this is that it produced a huge contrast for me.  If you've not yet experiencing any contrast, I don't think there's going to be much motivation for you to be "self-disciplined".

Personally, I'm now of the conviction that all this talk of "self-discipline" is counterproductive and overblown.  I think that, when you find the right thing, it produces unquestioningly compelling rewards all its own.  I think that any system that relies solely on "self-discipline" is probably not a system that really works, because it's not really producing a compelling change of condition.

Nonnies seem to be a special needs group all their own.  We seem to need to go more in depth than regular secretors.  And, perhaps, if you're trying to merely adhere to what secretors do and thinking that that will solve your problems all by itself, I really think you're not going to have the results you really need.  

I would suggest picking up a copy of Dr. D's Encyclopedia and paying special attention to the foods and, especially, the protocols for non-secretors.  When I started focusing on those protocols, that's when I really started noticing improvements.

Along these lines, I would really focus on picking up some of the supplements of North American Pharmacal (NAP), Dr. D's nutriceutical company.  I would really look at his products like Glycosia, Polyflora, Deflect, and so on.  In fact, I would suggest that you get started with his "Basics Pack", which has all the most essential things in one fell swoop:  http://www.4yourtype.com/prodinfo.asp?number=HP005

I can't strongly suggest this stuff enough.  I had a chance to observe Dr. D at the most recent IfHI conference in Phoenix, and I can say that I've never had the occasion to be in the vicinity of so much painfully supernatural intelligence in all my life... The entity I witnessed that weekend seemed almost irresistably compelled to pore through every conceivable nook and cranny of science, culture, and philosophy, and draw conclusions and perceive connections in a way that I never thought possible, and have never witnesses before.  

To say that I'm going to take advantage of that kind of human phenomenon and its output is, in all likelihood, the understatement of some very wide expanse of time indeed.

Drea, you are a secretor?  Hmmm, most secretors I know can tolerate sugar.  I wonder about the rest of your serotyping especially Lewis.

I had to equate the avoid foods to pain...  Once I started seeing them as the pain producers that they are, it is much easier to say "No thanks!" to them.  I try to not hurt people's feelings when they offer me an avoid food, but it has to be that I look after my health first.

ABJoe, this is how I look at the avoids and many of the other foods as well....they equal much pain that can fill my body for days...just not worth it. Sometimes I think that I am lucky to have such severe reactions because it is easier for me to stay away from these foods.
