Hello all,
I am back doing the nonnie diet again and already feeling so much better.
I have just gone through the most awful breakup with my boyfriend who i thought I was going to marry so I have been feeling quite down.   I am not a good sleeper in general - (this is why my boyfriend broke up with me - one of his reasons) and so i am taking a very low dose of trazodone for a short period to help me to sleep.  
I am also taking catechol and B12.

I guess I am hoping that the blood type diet will get rid of my insomnia.   I have already lost 5 pounds and feel physically really good. My mild acne on my skin has completely cleared over the last month.

I do suffer from very dark circles which I attribute to caffein and avoids.   Should I be entirely giving up caffein.  I drink green tea and still have the occasional cup of coffee which I am trying to kick for good.

Could it possibly be that the coffee drinking is related to your insomnia?  There is just way too much caffiene in coffee for it to ever be healthy for you.  And, decaffinated is no better.  So, in that sense, think of coffee as mainlining inflammation directly into your gut.  

I'd also consider looking at the adrenal fatigue thread because from what I'm remembering lack of sleep is related to adrenal fatigue.

If you could possibly have adrenal fatigue, you might want to take it easy in the exercise dept. for stress reduction.

An emotional break-up is right up there among the top stressors, and I do hope you are trying to do something for yourself every day

suzedgar, sleep is one of my health challenges too, and the diet helped a lot at first, but now my problem is back...it could be adrenal fatigue...so I think you are on the right track, but check out the adrenal thread...and best of luck.

I only have one small cup of coffee in the morning and not every day. Believe me - i know it is stupid and I need to give it up.
I do have 2 cups of green tea in the morning and one cup around 3:00 pm in the afternoon.

I wonder if I gave up all caffeine if i would sleep better???

Sometimes, it's hard to ourselves by doing the right thing.  Have you tied tracking your sleeplessness to your food and liquid intake?  

Mr KK suffers from insomnia every six months or so; I understand that it is a difficult issue to pin down.  Please consider giving up the coffee for a while, and maybe cut back on the green tea to one cup a day and see what happens.

I think that would be a good idea - to cut down the caffeine - especially to cut out the afternoon one.   That might really help

suzedgar, welcome back!!
I'd like to add that your poor sleeping is prob from the coffee in that coffee messes w/ your blood sugar. It creates insulin resistance. If your blood sugar is not at a good point thru the night, you'll wake up and have a hard time getting back to sleep, or maybe even getting to sleep. Taking some magnesium an hour before bed might help as well. Please do check out the adrenal fatigue threads. There are at least 2 and are stickied up  ;) so they won't go away. Adrenal fatigue is a serious issue. You can have a look at the symptoms:

   * Tendency to gain weight and unable to loose it, especially around the waist.
   * High frequency of getting the flu and other respiratory diseases and these
      symptoms  tend to last longer than usual.
   * Tendency to tremble when under pressure.
   * Reduced sex drive.
   * Lightheaded when rising from a laying down position.
   * Unable to remember things.
   * Lack of energy in the mornings and also in the afternoon between 3 to 5 pm.
   * Feel  better suddenly for a brief period after a meal.
   * Often feel tired  betweeen 9 - 10 pm, but resist going to bed.
   * Need coffee or stimulants to get going in the morning.
   * Crave for salty, fatty, and high protein food such as  meat and cheese.
   * Increase symptoms of PMS for women; period are heavy and then stop, or almost stopped on the 4th day, only to start flow again on the 5th or 6th day.
   * Pain in the upper back or neck with no apparent reasons .
   * Feels better when stress is relieved, such as on a vacation.
   * Difficulties  in getting up in the morning
   * Lightheaded
   * Mild depression
   * Food and or inhalant allergies
   * Lethargy and lack of energy
   * Increased effort to perform daily  tasks
   * Decreased ability to handle stress
   * Dry and thin skin
   * Hypoglycemia
   * Low Body Temperature
   * Nervousness
   * Palpitation
   * Unexplained hair loss
   * Alternating constipation and diarrhea
   * Dyspepsia

There are several of us here dealing w/ adrenal issues, so if many of these symptoms apply, you should be able to get at least a little help here.  ;) :K)

Suzedar  - I got something at the HFS called  Teeccino - brews like cofee. But no caffiene.  it has roast carob, barley, chicory root, dates, orange peel, almonds, and figs. Got it for dh (he has GERD).  Check the ingredients for Avoids. It's worth a try.  

Italy - Someone (you ?) ask me on another thread (about sleep)  did I have Blood Sugar Problems and I didn't understand it. Then I read Dr D's news letter about blood sugar and your comments - Ahaaaaa.  I started to read the fatigue book, but  got distracted.

Green tea has caffeine, also, so cut it back or have it earlier.  I am very sensitive to caffeine, altho most relatives can handle it.  My grandma drank tons of coffee & slept OK as far as I know.
Now that I drink 'black chocolate' I don't have it in the PM.  Even that trace amount affects me.  Maybe you are more sensitive than you thought.
Also, MAGNESIUM is what I have to have to sleep.  
Try upping your 'mag'. The RDA isn't enough.

How much magnesium do you take at night?  I take 1000 mg of Calcium and 500 mg of mag with dinner.  
I know that my insomnia is very closely related to anxiety and my relationship.  However, i do think that I am sensitive to caffeine too.  
I dont' really want to take the trazodone for long as I don't like taking any meds at all.   It will be nice to come off it when this awfully stressful period of my life is over.

That's quite an interesting list of things indicating adrenal fatigue.  It's something I've been wondering about lately because of how exhausted I get with exercise.  A lot of the symptoms sound like thyroid symptoms as well.  The thing in that list that really stuck me was the getting sleepy between 9-10pm but resisting going to bed.  That's me!!!  I doze off on the couch, then I'm awake for hours.....
I have to call my endocrinologist to check on some bloodwork I had taken and I'll bring that up.

How lovely to see your post!!  I am doing 2 days a week of intense aerobic and 2 days a week an intense weight bearing/ballet class.  I am pretty convinced that the excercise I have been doing while not doing the diet has kept me afloat for so long.  
The insomnia has been awful over the last 8 months.  I stopped doing the diet about a year ago.  I just kept thinking it was a placebo affect.  I realize that that is not the case.  I hate taking the trazodone - have only been on it for a week and it is better than the sleeping pills I was taking which are awful.

I imagine that being on the diet and taking supplements - like catechol/intrinsa/B12 etc will start helping.

Jane FWIU, thyroid problems are a symptom of adrenal problems. How are you about getting up in the morning? Do you feel refreshed or still tired? Are you sluggish between 3-5PM?
Let me forewarn you that bloodwork will not give you the accurate results you need for adrenal function. Testing saliva does, tho. It tests at the cellular level. I had my test done at Diagnos-Tech.

The article is very long, but well worth the read. If you can print it off in color and read it in quiet, it is very helpful.
suzedgar, just wanted to add, if you're trying to be really compliant, Teeccino is an avoid for you because of the barley. I found that same prod a couple of years ago and was thrilled, until I got home and checked the ingred.  :'( ;)

I take about as much mag as cal.  It's good to spread the dosage over the day for better absorption, but I take most of it in the PM & take some cal & more mag before bedtime.  It takes about a half hour to kick in.
Try about 1000 of mag, too for a while, maybe some cal/mag at noon, some at supper, & some near bedtime.
Also, some B12 keeps you awake as I learned!  There is supposed to be a form sold by Dr. D that is good for sleep.
There are many factors.  Keep searching.  Also the time of exercise is important.
Usually more vigrorous earlier & lighter later in the day........
Each day is different!

One thing that has really helped with my sleeping issues is that I try to be in bed with the lights out by 10:30pm. I now wear ear plugs to keep the house noises out and I don't read or watch TV in the bedroom. Just crawl into bed, put in the ear plugs, turn off the lights, and fall asleep to the sound of my breathing. The ear plugs have helped for those times when Pixel (my cat) decides to start her howling, which is almost every night around 3am.

Perhaps keep a consistent sleep schedule to 'train' your body to sleep at regular sleep intervals.

Drink some calming, soothing herbals teas appropriate for your blood type.  

Engage in some relaxing activity before retiring to bed: reading, spending time with loved ones, meditation, visualization, writing (poetry).

I agree about getting to bed by 10:30. I'm normally in bed by 9 PM or very little after. I keep earplugs under my pillow for if I need them. I'm too much of a scaredy cat to block out all noise if I don't have to. (we live out away from everyone, so no help from anyone else if I need it - so I like to be able to hear what's going on around me). I also have the windows blacked up. LOL   THAT makes so much difference it's amazing. So glad I'm reading Lights Out. Now, if some day I can just get it all read!!  ;)

It's almost impossible to sleep in a perfectly darkened room even if you live in the north woods.
Proponents of this say the room must be perfectly darkened, not even w/ a clock radio!
There are even stars outside that may sneak some light into your house LOL!
Seiously, I never could do that, but they say that works.
They do sell shades that darken the room, but I'm not ready for that!
I'm sure it works.
Meanwhile, I love the magnesium!

I have black material under my curtains. It's pitch black in my room and I sleep great!! Some people aren't comfortable w/ that and truthfully I'm surprised I am since I do live in the woods and want to know what's going on around me.  ;)

Here's what I've recently found helpful in getting to sleep: 2 capsules Standardized Valarerian and
about 500 mg GABA one hour or so before bed. Avoid the computer and the TV and try to be as regular with your bedtime hour as possible. (Emphasis on "try" to avoid stress) Also I've been
applying transdermal Magnesium Oil at night too. The website is at home so I'll have to send it to
you later...if someone else on this thread doesn't get it to you. Think it's something like
Health and Wisdom....  Good sleeping..I consider sleep almost sacred and
takes precedence over eating.

Oh, for sweet energy!! Had a cup of coffee this am because I am
sooo tired. But honestly didn't notice any "surge" so now it'll be easier
to stick to my 2-bag-a-cup-green tea with ghee and agave.

I think I have gotten a brief newsletter a few times with offers for products.
He recently started another e-mail list probably to replace the other one. Ask again.

The 'black chocolate' is plain cocoa powder - I get Ghirardelli at Whole Foods.
I have never had agave nectar.  It sounds interesting if it's OK for low blood sugar.

First of all, I have to say that, just from what you're telling me about your boyfriend, I am not particularly impressed by him.  He might not have felt compatible with you, but his justifications seem pretty lame.  

Secondly, I would suggest that you join a gym with a lap pool, and find someone who can teach you the butterfly stroke.  Hands down, I find it the biggest single stress-reliever there is, because you quite literally get to thrash your entire body in the water while doing it, and it's unbelievably powerful.   It's also incredibly comforting and elegant to perform.

I recommend this instructional video on YouTube:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Cx22wWbPs0  The guy explains it well.  

Beyond this, I also recommend a class in some very severe martial art, such as Krav Maga.  It's an unbelievable experience.  You get to do a lot of very strong hitting and kicking.  Another good option is a female self-defense course.  It will definitely build your confidence, to know that you're not so helpless if it ever came down to it.

There are a few movies that I think are great therapy for people who have been dumped.  The first is a British comedy called "Dirty Filthy Love"... it's not what you think; it's a romantic comedy about people with anxiety disorder, finding each other.  The other movie is an old black-and-white film called "Marty", with Ernest Borgnine.  It's a very uplifting movie.

Thank you so much - Ron - great post.  It is a few months on now and I feel GREAT!!  I have started dating someone new and things are so much better.

He couldn't care less that I don't sleep that well and suffer a little from anxiety and he thinks the blood type diet is a fabulous idea!!  It is such a refreshing change to have so much support.   It was extremely hard to get over the breakup - very very painful.  I actually dove into my Faith and went on a retreat and then I went travelling - to England, Puerto Rico and then a week ago, I got back from 10 days in Rome.   I feel Fantastic!

As far as sleeping goes, I have come off the Trazodone, am on the blood type diet seriously - gave up coffee and my therapist put me on an extremely low dose of Zoloft - I don't have depression but he thought it would help the anxiety - very very temporarily.  I have been taking it for a week and feel very relaxed. I am able to sleep for the first time in years!!  It is great.    In the meantime, i am workign on stress reduction things like lots of exercise and eating well and relaxing after my job which is very very stressful (trying to change that too)

I was just doing some more research on adrenal healing and happened to go back over Dr Lam's info. It says there to be in bed by 10:00 (not 10:30).  Just thought I'd share that. :-)

Thank you for identifying your Black Chocolate. I eat the very same
100% Gihirardelli Chocolate Bar out of hand. I don't know if I'd eat
as much if I couldn't cut the bitterness with a bit of agave.
(cactus syrup). Whether it is good if low blood sugar is a problem, I
don't know. I avoid the low blood sugar by eating it after a protein
meal. Of course ALL my meals are protein meals.

You might wanna pick up a copy of Dr. D's "Complete Blood Type Encyclopedia" and follow both the anti-stress and anti-inflammatory protocols.  Also, I highly recommend his "Deflect" product in conjunction with those things.

The anti-stress protocol works for me very well... particularly the valerian.

We're trying to treat my grandmother's cancer right now, and so I'll email this to my mother right away.

Speaking of cancer, I am under the assumption that there is no guarantee of cure  once the person has cancer, but if the lesions are pre-cancerous, it can be turned around. My 94-yr. old aunt has a 'thing' on her forehead which she claimed was a
scratch & went to buy some peroxide for it. Then the pharmacist (or some worker) convinced her to get some antibiotic cream.  That allegedly irritated the wound & it became this growth a few years ago.  It seems to have grown & when she was in the hospital for dizziness & other issues last week, the drs. are convinced it is a cancer 99.9%. (But they didn't do a biopsy!)  
She is afraid of drugs, had a bad experience with anesthesia as a child, does not do well with antibiotics, & the drs. want to remove it w/ general anesthesia.  She won't do that.  She has interest in natural therapies (while being a smoker for many years - used to be Camels w/o filters!) & takes vitamins. She has some good habits & some bad--this is the AB who is an anomaly (while my husband is a classic AB).
Is there any other therapy for this w/o drugs? Of course, she has to be willing to
cooperate.  Thought I'd ask the brother/sisterhood of BTDers......

With a growth on the forehead, they can localize that one area remove and send it to be checked.

The dermatologist has a special light they use to check the skin to see if something needs checked, also.  So maybe you can get her in to get checked by this special light and the doctor can take it from there.
