Well, lately I have noticed that I have a tough time eating prunes (organic, no preservatives) and figs.  Its like that stick inside me and feel like a rock there.  Anyway, I read a tip to soak prunes, figs, raisins in water overnight of at least a few hours in warm water to rehydrate them for your body.  This really does help!  I can eat them this way, although they are soggy and my sons don't like them that way.  The prunes are good that way I think.  

Might help someone!  They could even be added to morning smoothie this way.  (I'll have to try it!)  Blessings,

I soak them overnight in green tea,.....next I puree them into a jam!

Soaking makes sense, since they are such concentrated foods.  You could eat a handful and really be eating a huge number of pieces of fruit.  And they will be absorbing liquid from inside you, thereby dehydrating your insides.  (This is my theory!)  Kind of like ground flax seeds do.

I used to pour boiling water over a pot of prunes, to just barely cover them.  Then I let them sit covered overnight.  In the morning, they were plump, but not falling apart, like prunes can get when they are boiled.  I used them for smoothies, along with the liquid.

Thanks for starting this thread, Nina.  Dried fruits can definitely turn on us.

if you eat them as is and are experiencing these symptoms, you're not drinking enough water during the day...condensed fiber like in figs and prunes need water to move through your system

Regarding ground flaxseeds, I have noticed that cooked flaxseeds, such as in recipes, etc, doesn't bother me at all, but if I use them ground fresh from the seed, I get constipation very easily.  And I do drink lots of water and eat lots of fiber through the day.

Anyone else notice this?

Hi Tina,
They actually help to prevent constipation for me.  I only use them in my smoothie, and it's in a pint of liquid, followed by 2 cups of green tea.  Maybe that's more liquid than a normal person would want to chug down, but I'm not a fan of solid foods in the morning.  :-)

Yummmmmmmmmm, I really love nice plump juicy prunes!!  Fresh figs are to 'die for'!! Will be glad when they are both my friends again. In the meantime, you all have one or two for me ok?  ;) :K)

Sometimes I presoak organic prunes or Calimyrna figs overnight with my breakfast mixture, the next morning all the contents are very soft and very digestible.  

I think soaking dried fruits in any compliant juice or filtered water will soften them up nicely and plumpen them up a little, as well.

Does anyone know what to do with dried bananas?  There are quite a lot in a bag of mixed dried fruits which I get sometimes.  I don't care for  them in the dried state.  I think I tried soaking them once but they were still hard - maybe they need hot water.  I added a few small bits (inadvertently) with some raisins and sultanas (from the same bag) in a rich fruit cake and my husband thought they were raisin pips so that doesn't soften them.  I hate to just discard them.

Are the bananas dehydrated or cooked?  I get some banana chips that are crispy and cooked in coconut oil.  I don't eat them, as I don't like them, but my son does sometimes.  If they are the cooked kind, they will not rehydrate.  Crumble them up and put them on top of fruit or other dessert maybe?

Perhaps try poaching them over the stovetop or in a hot liquid for a few hours or overnight to soften them up.  

Some of the dried bananas and banana chips I've seen contain palm oil or coconut oil (double check yours for no avoids).  Maybe this is a contributing factor to why it takes awhile to soften them up.  

Or add them to baked goods, homemade trail mixes, toss in salads for the crunchiness texture.

I chop them up and boil them in oatmeal - figs, prunes, apricots...yum! Or put them in granola at the end. Good stuff.

Powder them up and add as a flavouring adjunct for cream or other fruit sauces.
